  • In this Project Video, I show you how I make a leather roper wallet.
    Roper wallets are a popular style of long wallet and they are fun to make. These offer a lot of room for artwork as well as storage for the user.
    We offer a DIGITAL DOWNLOAD pattern pack for this project that you can purchase at our website: shop.dgsaddlery.com/products/...
    If you would like to see the video showing how to tool the Large Basket stamp artwork that we did on this particular wallet, you can see that video here: • Hand Tooling a Large B...

    I love roper wallets. More biker look as I use chain as I am disabled and don't like sitting on my wallet. I like "idiot" chains so that 1) I know if the wallet slips out, it's on a chain and easier to pick up. 2) it's a little more difficult to pick pocket me especially when I'm in my wheelchair. Besides, that's not so much a wallet as it is a piece of art that holds crap... lol.

    Something I found is that when you bind or glue the interior liner to the out piece, if you bend the out piece while connecting the two, it will have more of a bend already formed. So less bunching in the middle and quicker break in.

      Yes, this is the best way of doing a lined wallet(or anything that is lined and has a curve in its shape) some people build a little triangular mold for this exact reason. Usually, I use something laying around the house of the same shape for the same effect.

    The skiving knife takes a lot of practice. I bought one a couple of years ago and using it on thin leather like you do is really hard. Haven't used mine in a while because of the projects I've been making but I thing I need to sharpen it and work on the skill a bit.

    Awesome looking wallet Don!!
    Question.... couldn't you skive down the center portion of your outer leather a bit to allow it to bend a bit easier? Or maybe soften it a bit with a conditioner that area to help as well?
    I ask because that is what I did when breaking in mine and my kids baseball/softball gloves and mitts. I always ouled the hinge mire than the rest of the glove and when you're breaking in top quality first base gloves and catchers mitts it makes a huge difference.

    Don, is there any easier way to saddle stitch something long like a belt by hand without having to pull 30+ feet of thread through every single hole? I don't want several start/stops, but it is gruesome hand stitching something that long. Thanks!

    • @cordnipper61
      @cordnipper61 Год назад +1

      You can use several sections of shorter thread then over stitch the end pieces.
      Harder to explain then to show but check out How to Handstitch by Al Stohlman. It shows how to do it.
