  • In this video, we discuss how to quickly prepare leather for stamping or tooling. We will use a set of wing dividers to draw a border on our project and then will cut that border with a swivel knife. Next we will use a basket stamp on the entire bordered area and then use a camouflage tool as a border stamp.

Well slap me silly! I was trying to stamp my basket weave without the full overlap and always had to go back and clean up the connections. Now I am going to border stamp everything in my shop!! Thank you!!

It appears that the angle at which you are using is set at 45°. I thank you for your clear and precise instructions. I will subscribe and save this video for future reference.

I was just messing with a basket weave stamp tho a morning for the first time. I thought you overlap both straight pieces to make a tighter weave. This does look nicer. Excellently timed.

Your video is really amazing and helpful! I was trying to make a video about leather crafts and hope to refer to some video clips from your video. I will cite the source so don't worry! Thanks a lot if you are ok with that.

Good video. It looks like you didn't start border stamp right in the corner which is critical. I'm just starting and boy I've had my issues and border stamping is one... where exactly to start, do you ever overlap, fading out in proper places, etc. This video helped a lot with that. Thanks.

What weight maul do you use for the stamping? I am not getting good results with my current one (10 oz) and having to strike it harder than id like. I am wondering if a heavier one would make a difference.

Absolute beginer here, would it not be easier to stamp the border and around you maker mark before doing the basket weaving? Have a solid boundry from the beginning.

I have found that the handles on most stamps are not large enough. Also, I would like to "index" my tools by adding a flat that is parallel with the tool mark or in this case with the long sides of the stamp. Does anyone else have issues with small handle tools? I tend to not be able to keep aligned and tool will rotate slightly.

That’s a great tip, I’ve used weights before but just never do when tooling because I turn my work often and it just slows me down. Just about every tooler I know uses one though.
