I like how Jackie showed his playful, gentle side with the little girl shortly before his murder. It's a hint of the the man he could have been if he'd avoided getting drawn into his family's way of life.
I always thought the chess game was the perfect metaphor for Jackie Jr. His whole life was like that chess game. Anytime he encountered something hard, he just gave up - and not just give up, but flip the middle finger at life. Can't handle Med School? Quits and pursues mob life. Can't handle being faithful to Meadow? Decides to see who-was on the side. Can't handle being low on the mob totem pole? Tries something really dumb (robbing the card game) to jump the line. Like Omar said, he should've played things out - persevered, or at least just tried a different but intelligent approach to his goal. No Med school? Try business school or something easier. Don't cheat on Meadow - let her down gently and with respect. Don't try jumping the line in mob life - keep your head, be a reliable peon for a few years, work your way up. He didn't do any of this - Instead, he'd just give up and do something stupid to fuck everything up. Very allegorical.
ADHD really hits home with Jackie Jr! Sad really as he could of easily made it up the ranks but Tony is the boss and even when he says to give Jackie a pass, he then says do it in a timely manner. Crazy sh#t right there especially given Jackie's father and uncle both dying. Sad kid
Actually, according an interview, with the gun being so small it leaves a smaller exit wound. So they specifically chose that gun so they could have an open casket still.
Love how Michael K. Williams summarizes Jackie Jr.'s entire problem in life in a subtle way. "... you should have played it out. That's the only way you're gonna learn." Jackie Jr. never committed to anything in the show, he was always looking out for the next, better opportunity, but in doing so, he always ignored life's lessons until it was too late.
@@fluffymassacre2918 Ehh...they had the board set up wrong. Rotated 90 degrees. The bottom right hand square should always be a light square (light on right, we used to call it). That's why the White king and queen were on the wrong squares.
To this day, I still wonder what kind of angle Vito came out at or what obstacle obstructed the view of Jackie Jr so Vito could get the jump on him like that. It's like Vito appeared out of Fat Air.
Was walking slower in the same direction than Jackie, Jackie on one side, Vito on the sidewalk... As Jackie was behind he didn't recognize Vito. When Jackie got past him and close to the car he just power-walked and clipped the guy.
@Brett Mitchell Exactly. It's sort of like the Tony B thing, except Tony's love is for Jackie's already deceased father: Tony doesn't really want to do it, but he knows what needs to be done. He can't have this kid coming to a summer BBQ with Christopher and Furio! But he can pin the responsibility on Ralph, who he knows gave Jackie Jr. a gun, told him the Feech card game story and did a million other things to undermine Tony's attempts to keep the kid out of the life. And on some level, Ralph knows he is partly responsible too, which is one of the reasons he'd like the decision to be made by Tony.
Despite everybody claiming how much they loved Jackie Sr., series ended with his family completely exterminated. His brother Richie, his son Jackie Jr. and niece Adrianna.
@@masterexploder9668 I like to think it shows how much love they have for a certain person doesn't extend to the wife, child or relative simply because they share blood, hell Tony clearly hates Janice with a burning passion and wouldn't care after a week if she died but she's blood so he deals with it just like how they dealt with Jackie Jr and Richie.
This is one of the most implausible murders in the series. Broad daylight, middle of the street and the parade float is somehow stealthier than Solid Snake.
i always saw this a ralphie misreading tony. tony obviously wants jackie jr to live since he promised jackie he would watch over him but didn’t want to be the one to give him a pass. ralphie wanted to give him a pass but felt that he had to put his foot down and make a decision another captain would make
The way Jackie demolished the chess board was the perfect example of his character. Impulsive, prone to anger, not willing to think things through and incapable of learning from his mistakes.
I absolutely love the random insertion of Michael K. Williams, its like somehow at some point in The Wire universe it intersects with The Sopranos's and he's just playing the same character. I love it.
It's funny and extremely sad at the same time, in the context of telling a traumatic childhood story about a (purportedly) disabled person you just killed
He’s having fun with this whole situation total sociopath, putting all of it on Ralphie even tho it’s the kids step father, and letting either Jackie Jr die or everyone hates Ralphie, you can tell he was having a blast pretending to care
This death is so iconic and will never be topped (unlike Vito). Vito literally materializing out of nowhere, the gun having no recoil or kick, the way Jackie just rag dolls into the snow, the way Vito waddles to the get away car…absolute gusto.
The most devastating aspect about this scene is the fact that due to death of Jackie jr, everything that his father did was in vain. A former mob boss who's had propably hundreds of men killed and has robbed tens of millions of dollars, and all that's left from that legacy is his widow Rosalie. So that's that for providing for your family to ensure better future for them.
lol that's one of the major overarching plot points of The Sopranos. The only ones that ended up with something in the end were the ones that got out of the game early on, like Little Carmine and Beansie. Everyone else got murdered or imprisoned.
@@KoH4711 I might be wrong but it seems obvious Jackie jr reached out to Ralph "before" he did to Tony. Ralph therefore tried to get Tony's approval for giving him a pass, whilst denying he's even been contacted. So Jackie jr took his last ditch attempt at survival calling Tony because he's already given his location up to Ralph.
The execution scene is so laughably bad. Vito as big as he is emerges from behind absolutely nothing in the middle of the street, and Jackie falls like someone committing insurance fraud.
Yeah, how did Jackie not see Vito? There wasn't even something there for him to stand behind. Just out in the open and Jackie didn't notice him two feet away, lol.
It was deliberately done like that. The writers hated Jackie, the character and his arc. He was stupid, arrogant and also expendable. So they made his death exactly like a bad 70's crime show. Vito appears out of nowhere, the close up of the gun shows it's a toy replica, Jackie just falls straight into the only drift of snow on the street. Vito just toddles back into the get away car. It is a death scene straight out of an episode of Columbo or McMillan and wife.
I'm another disappointed with Jackie Jr's death, I wanted at least a well-done chapter in which the events that led to his death were properly prepared
"See you should have played that out, that's the only way you gonna learn" , i can't emphasize how much this line meant to me. Normally it won't mean much to me, but seeing Jackie jr's arc and this line, I reflected upon my own actions in life.
One thing I like about Jackie's last scene is the difference between Matush and him being the getaway drivers in the botched robbery (Matush leaving at the first shot and Jackie stealing the car and leaving Dino to die) versus a professional driver. Vito was the perfect example for this. People have pointed out how slow he was to get into the car, and that's the point. It shows that a professional driver will have the total patience to wait for even a hobbling obese man to get completely in the car, whereas a low-level driver will be too panicked under pressure and will leave his crew. A professional also knows to drive away slowly, since screeching tires and traffic violations draw even more attention.
That's a great point. Anthony Capo, who was a member later turned informant for the Jersey Mob, said something similar on his first hit (he was the driver). Vinny Ocean ordered him to drive the getaway car, but not drive away too fast or too slow either.
Yes, but it was still Ralph's lesson to learn. Tony rubbed his nose in it, but Ralph pushed hard to be captain and inherited Jackie Jr by dint of being with Rosalie. What's interesting is how much protocol weighs on Ralph. He actually respected the rules as much as Tony demands of others, but breaks when applied to him
They weren't playing mind games. Tony was telling him he had to whack Jackie Jr., and Ralph was trying to do everything he could to not. They both knew what to do. This was nothing more than Ralph begging for an out.
1:54 This part is especially important, he was basically telling Jackie that his dead father's name had only so much weight whereas Johnny Soprano was alive and well when Tony and his current men robbed that card game. EDIT: Paraphrasing Prop Joe, why do some guys think running away means hiding like 25 minutes away!
junior is in the clip for about 20 seconds and has the best line in the clip his delivery at the "didnt he almost drown in 3 inches of water" cracks me up
Vito is a pretty strong dude, though you got to hand it to him. There was literally zero visible recoil when he shot that firearm. He even managed to keep the slide from moving at all! True professional. He absorbed that recoil better than he absorbed all those guys in the club.
I think Tony legit didnt want Ralphie to put the hit on Jackie .Jr. But instead wanted Ralphie to look weak as a capo, by giving Jackie a pass after shooting a made man.
@@brettpilkington9539 Still not seeing the bigger picture are you ? Who told Jackie Jr about his father and Tony's old heist, and drove Jackie Jr into holding up that card game in the first place ? One small conversation between the two about how or what drove Jackie to rob the card game in the first place and, Ralphies the one who'd be sleeping with the fishes. Who do you think had more to lose ?
@@nizzanator you said Tony didn't want Jackie dead, he's telling Ralphie to do it in these scenes multiple times but you are taking his words as literal. Tony wanted Jackie dead and there was no way back for him.

Look answer me this what would Tony stand to gain from murdering Jackie Jr, one of his closest friend's son without even the decency to hear his side of the story ? You think Tony truly wanted to whack Jackie Jr no questions asked ?
I know right, quit the game when it got hard just like med school. He should have stayed in school and played it out that's the only way he's gonna learn.
Incredible scene between T and Ralph. How Tony put the responsibility to him as it was hia best friends son that he promised to take care of. Then the symbolism of the last chess game. Jackie, a pawn in the world of Cosa Nostra, tried to move two spots when he couldn't, which is exactly what he did in the card game robbery. Wanted to skip ahead to get made quickly... The rest is history.
Also Jackie is told after sweeping away the pieces “he shoulda played that out, otherwise he’ll never learn”, which is precisely how he behaved the whole series, never facing smaller consequences until he hit the biggest consequence.
You gotta love Tony for trying to pull a slick move on Ralpie by trying to put the idea of giving Jackie a pass in his head. He hated Ralph and wanted him to give Jackie a pass just so he would be disrespected by everyone. He was always trying to humiliate and kill Ralphie slowly.
Tony was pissed off because he was forced to give the capo position to Ralphie to reduce tension between them yet Ralph wasn't assuming responsibility for his actions that drove Jackie to his downfall. I dont think Tony was trying to humillate him at least at this point in the story, he was rushing him to make a decision.
Idk if he had those sorts of intentions. I wouldnt put it past him...but you cant forget how close Jackie was to everyone. Meadow was dating him for a time, Ralph was with his mother, all the guys worked with his dad...etc. I could legit see Tony going easy on him.
They shot this scene in Patterson, not "the Boonton projects." (There are no projects in Boonton) Ironically, Vito ends up hiding out in "Dartford, NH," which was filmed in Boonton.
"See if you can figure out the difference." Tony handing Jackie a layup and he still couldn't nail it. The difference was that nobody got hurt and his father was still alive to protect him.
I'm 100% assured the scene where Jackie Jr. gets shot was made in a hurry. The editing was horrible, the sound effect for the gun was horribe, the gun itself was a miserably bad prop, Jackie Jr. fell on a pile of snow that just happened to be on the side of the road, with some red spraypaint on it.
Agree 100%. Whoever the assistant director was for this episode really ought to feel bad about this scene. It's worse than stuff from 80s low-budget productions. And they could have fixed it after it aired, but chose not to for some reason. I mean, that prop gun deliberately doesn't look like an actual gun, because it's not meant to be used in close ups... so what do they do? Close up. No level of rush can explain that incompetence.
I honestly like the low quality nature of the scene. It’s almost even more humiliating for Jackie jr even if that’s not the intention I just find it so comical that this is the scene how he’s killed and it’s kinda a shitty and stupid scene completely devoid of logic lol.
I like how he passed the big Vito without noticing him... just a shot before that he was walking the practically empty street, and all of a sudden big Vito popped into existence, and then the car popped into existence, while Jackie fell into a pile of show covered in blood. Whole pile of snow bloody as if he was shot with a elephant rifle. Yet it all works in a cut. Amazing show.
I'm assuming the idea was that Vito was sat in the car waiting. Jackie passes by, he gets out, walks up behind him, then once he's taken the shot the car catches up with him and he very, very slowly gets into the car. But yeah, this scene could've been shot better.
Watching this now, it occurs to me that the brief chess game & dialogue shown from 2:54-3:17 is a metaphor for Jackie's entire experience with the mob.
3:24 idk if it’s much but Jackie saying “what are you laughing at? in a playful way really demonstrates a side of him that might not have “bottomed out.” As someone who works in elementary schools, I appreciate this line bc it shows Jackie could have had an extraordinary life where he made people happy and had special relationships, such as this one. TB to the many saints of Newark (not my most favorite) but when Christopher cries when tony holds him, a relative mentioned a tell children had…and to see this girl smile is so upsetting bc it showed Jackie really got mixed up in some bad stuff (even if it was outta respect to his fawtha). Sad what happened to him
People always talk about how stupid Jackie was, but I feel the opposite. He was smart, charismatic and suave, he could have everything in life if he had more patience and better role models.
The interaction with the girl before he opened the door and left I feel like was his last thing to say and experience with anyone. He said “what are you laughing at” and I guess it’s just interesting and funny how it played out right after.
He was also really good with AJ. But he was probably just putting on a show to impress Meadow. He had a lot of advantages and possibilities, but threw it all away.
I read through that entire (rather interesting) paragraph you just wrote, and then I get to “fawtha” and just busted up laughing. Great job throwing that into the middle of something well thought out (and serious). Good play 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 😂
@@ortodogge I think this is a good way to look at it and is probably a lot closer to what was intended by the show than "haha stupid kid got himself whacked." If anything, the whole arc is a pretty good example of how manipulative groups like gangs are a black hole preying on those around them as potential recruits, especially when there are people who are meaningfully disadvantaged in some way that they get ahold of (like Jackie Jr. here, who apparently has a learning disability that seems to render him unable to make use of the opportunities for education and such that he talks about in earlier episodes, and instead falls into the horrible shit he grew up around.)
All kidding aside, I do like how they give King Douche Jackie a redeeming moment when he kids around with the little girl before he leaves the apartment.
The way Tony is poking fun at Ralphie here is hilarious, he's enjoying the irony. Ralphie whined/ begged to be capo, and as soon as he is, he's got the decision placed in front of him to put a hit on his nephew or look weak and losing face. Tony's "You did the best you could, didn't you?" is such a middle finger, like of course Tony knows Ralphie didn't have any positive influence on Jackie Jr. and prob knows he coaxed Jackie into the robbery. If only he wasn't capo, least he wouldn't have the guilt of killing his dead friends only son lol
Jackie death scene is peak comedy:The complete lack of recoil, the png muzzle flash, the stock gunshot sound effect, the slide not moving nor the casing ejecting, the absolute tiny pistol that looks like toy, Vito coming from his side from a position where Jackie could have clearly seen his planet sized body blocking the sun, the fact that he just falls down on a pile of snow at the left side of the road that already has blood in it despite the fact that they were in the middle of the road , Jackie falling in such a casual way and moving his hand, Vito taking his sweet ass time getting into the tiny car, and the cherry on top being that random pedestrian who didn't give a single shit for the gunshot or the dead body, bravo vince.
Even though the Sopranos was over by the time of his passing, I really miss James Gandolfini and the skill he had as an actor. He was also a good man to boot.
Carrado "Junior" Soprano, will always be that uncle you loved so much. He put all the mafia stuff away and still let his little nephew dip his bread in his plate. No silly business, just an uncle and nephew talking and eating.
It shows a level of intimacy Tony never shared with anyone else in the series, and when Tony loses Uncle Junior to dementia, he also loses himself. This moment also shows why I hated the ending of the Many Saints of Newark… Corrado was the most human of the bunch. He wouldn’t whack someone out of anger over his own situation. Not that he was bothered by murder (he would have killed anyone for money or prestige), but he survived in that world by being able to control his temper and act with intention, not emotion.
@@gabriels2859 Junior was always a POS, extremely insecure and acted without emotion. He had a hit put out on Tony just because of suspicion he was undermining him, he also thought about siding with Richie Aprile and getting rid of Tony but decided not to completely based on his own interests. He was a snake and The Many Saints of Newark highlighted he's always been that way.
@@ProbInsane That is actually a pretty good point. No character in the Sopranos is above petty revenge, including the civilians. I think I was just disappointed. The end for Dickie was so anti-climactic.
Junior: “Kid almost drowned in 3 inches of water” Me: Haha, good one junior, love your one-liners Tony: “*sigh* The penguin exhibit” Me: WAIT THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?! AHAHAHA
A lot of mixed signals and mind reading goes on between Tony And Ralph on this issue. They both agree that its okay if the kid gets a pass. But then Ralph has to do the right thing of murdering Jackie Jr, according to the Mafia rules because he is now the captain.
Tony is heavily implying to Ralphie that he will suffer “insubordination” from his crew if he gives Jackie Jr a pass. That leaves Ralphie with only one decision, a decision that Tony makes Ralphie believe he made on his own
The final scene is like a summary of Jackie's entire life and personality. He has twice shown his foolishness before a board game, scrabble and Chess, a word game and a strategy game, he says the wrong things and he takes what's said the wrong way, he tries to move his pawn two spaces at one point showing his eagerness to move ahead but not understanding the game he is playing nor the rules of it but unlike chess in the game of life he doesn't have a little girl allowing him a do over. Unfortunately nobody ever taught him to develop his knights, he can't see the whole board or his place on it nor does he really even understand the rules of the game and unfortunately he has neither time nor the patience to learn and when it blows up in his face he leaves his " knights" stranded and knocks over the entire board, if Ray Ray had been there when Jackie sped past Dino he could've told them both "I think you're done for" and he is, a short trip to the market is all that was left for him but what he really needs Tony owns and his business ain't welcome. Jackie's final gesture is a smile and a tease toward the little girl showing he never was a truly evil or malicious person just a childish one who couldn't see what was coming next or as Uncle June so eloquently put it "the kid always was a dumb fuck wasn't he? Didn't he almost drown in three inches of water." At home or at the penguin exhibit the least dangerous place of all Jackie Jr. Finds a way to drown whether in a small puddle or listening to Ralph Cifaretto he stumbles because of it and ends up face down but Jackie Sr. Wasn't around to rescue him this time and the penguins carrying a gun.
Damn, I started reading this comment before going to bed when I finished it was time to wake up next morning, well said but need to have clear schedule to read it lol😂
I love that they used Michael K Williams who played Omar in the Wire in that scene. Pretty cool they intertwined because of Omar’s character and the difference between Omar and Jackie Jr as far as approach/strategy of their characters. Omar was everything Jackie Jr wished he was.
Alright so dude stares at Jackie (3:37) when he walks past, Jackie doesn't check his back after the fact. Lacking the awareness of a varsity athlete. Vito teleported in with his gun out, which either he has a very fat hand or its a very small calibre. Either way zero recoil. Vito shoots Jackie who was in the middle of the road who then teleported to the side and falls in snow which has blood sprayed all over it. The dude (3:52) who was in front of Jackie about 50 ft away doesn't even turn around to the sound of a gunshot, also lacking varsity awareness. Jackie had an open casket and no exit wound on his head or face but at 3:47 it looks like an exit wound on the left upper side of his forehead. Vito struggling to get into the car is fucking priceless. All in all I think this was the worst hit in the series, from a viewers entertainment point of view.

Ozymandias83 what do you think Tony wanted ?
Great explanation mate. Thanks.

@@KoH4711 I might be wrong but it seems obvious Jackie jr reached out to Ralph "before" he did to Tony. Ralph therefore tried to get Tony's approval for giving him a pass, whilst denying he's even been contacted.

Close up. No level of rush can explain that incompetence.
idk even with all that i still love this scene honestly.
Obviously a cap gun. Slide didn't even move. What a poor scene.
Stage guns are used throughout the show. Not just here....looks terrible.
The car appearing suddenly is somewhat believable, because cars can move fast. Vito on the other hand...
@@VinOptimaxxxHe's a come from behind kinda guy.
The gun looked like a kid's water pistol too. They must have filmed this scene at 1630 on a friday.

Tony's "You did the best you could, didn't you?" is such a middle finger, like of course Tony knows Ralphie didn't have any positive influence on Jackie Jr. and prob knows he coaxed Jackie into the robbery. A lot of mixed signals and mind reading goes on between Tony And Ralph on this issue. They both agree that its okay if the kid gets a pass. But then Ralph has to do the right thing of murdering Jackie Jr, according to the Mafia rules because he is now the captain.
True power is being able to exact punishment but offer mercy instead. Ralph has no power therefore he can’t offer mercy

If you listen closely before the gunshot you can hear 'I was here, it's a joke'
@@jar9736 I could probably get a note from the doctor
I’m surprised Vito cuddle him before or after the whacking
more like 10 penguins and a whale put together
Damn, I started reading this comment before going to bed when I finished it was time to wake up next morning, well said but need to have clear schedule to read it lol😂
You'd think you'd hear Vito coming from a mile away. I always figured his leather jacket sounds like two balloons rubbing together 🤣🤣🤣
don't forget he was in the CIA
The writers purposely made his death as stupid as possible because they hated the character Jackie Jr (not the actor).
The bucket of KFC at 3:28 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gold
Why would they put that there?🤷🏼♂️💀
Lmaoooooo white man in the corner 😂
I love that they used Michael K Williams who played Omar in the Wire in that scene. Pretty cool they intertwined because of Omar’s character and the difference between Omar and Jackie Jr as far as approach/strategy of their characters. Omar was everything Jackie Jr wished he was.
Jackie Jr wished he was black? And gay?
@@mkultra2456 no, a real gangster that people feared and respected based solely on his name😂
@@JacobC479 "Omar *_cummin!"_*
Both were shot dead at young ages.
As jackie laid in the snow, having his last thoughts of this life, he gently whispered his final words "my fatha"
Vito just materialised behind Jackie.
That's a whole lotta material.
The only thing more unrealistic than that gun is Vito being able to sneak up behind a guy….
Some say Jackie Jr stopped breathing out of respect for his fawthu
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 "teleported"!

Great comment 🤗 So insightful & into continuity, flow & simple common sense... 😍

Re the casket. I knew a guy who blew his face off with a shotgun and had an open casket. It can happen.
@@goodplenty534 sounds pretty twisted
Of all the people they could’ve got to whack Jackie Jr, why in the hell did they choose Vito? His getaway took more time than the LoTR trillogy.
