I wonder if that EF is consistent with all the Pilot pens. My Pilot Metropolitan is so fine, I don’t think I need an EF. Although I believe Japan make are true to it’s specs, I wonder if there’s any exception.
Sadly, the kakuno isn't designed to flex and give line variation. But a good starter fountain pen to get that line variation is Noodler's Ahab. It's twice as much money as kakuno, but I heard a lot of people like it as their first flex pen.
PILOT Kakuno Fountain Pen, Clear Barrel, Medium Nib (10822) is about $13 +$6.5 for converter. You probably want a Medium nib. The Japanese pens write thinner than the German pens. So, a Medium nib Japanese pen would write like a fine nib Lamy. I have two Pilot Metropolitan pens and they both write very well. I don't know about the quality of this Kakuno, never had one.

There's two tiny holes on the end of pen, so it'll truly become a eye dropper if you try that
