I actually really love that question about what defines a generation. I am a part of gen z and I think that the pandemic is actually going to seriously define our generation. Gen Z is the generation that is in school during this, and has to enter the post-pandemic world as young adults. I think we'll definitely see the lasting impact of the pandemic on our generation.

    • @gwendolynmabrey6678

True, but I really think Gen Z will end up being cut off at 2011 or so based on if we remember and has our childhood pre COVID vs during COVID. I think that it is a huge deal for us but I also think the kids who are between 10-0 right now will not be able to remember a world pre COVID and that lifestyle will be regular for them where we grew up without masks and went places.

I think it’s going to define a whole new generation. Those who were born during Covid, right before or was conceived during covid is going to be a whole new generation. I feel like there has been another sort of baby boom during covid… because what else have people had to do. But I like that thought. Especially as a school teacher. I teach 8th grade and we are constantly talking about how this will affect our students. K-12 kids are definitely going to be defined by this experience too in the opposite way.

a point I was thinking about throughout the video was the environment each generation was raised, millennials were raised by gen x and boomers telling them if they work hard they’ll be wildly successful and live a perfect life but then millennials got the shock of the falling economy and rising house prices, and that was passed to gen z . gen z was told by millennials how hard it is to find a footing in today’s society and I feel like that’s what caused gen z to be an active, get stuff done generation, bc we were told that if we didn’t take the opportunities we would have an even harder time later on
edit: i have a lot more points but i really wanted to talk about this one

The millenial in this vid was actually born 1993 so he was a kid when market crash and stuff like tht happen. Pretty sure he was more similar to the less optimistic side
I was born 1996 and up until i was 17 i was told by my parents to work hard and get good job but by the time I turn 18 in 2010s i know what i will get myself into and i know i will have a hard time finding job after i graduate college.
This generations are BS. The millenial stuff u are talking about were only applicable to 1980s born millennials to very early 90s borns.
Any millenneal who was in school as of 2010 were more likely to know their future is not going to be guaranteed after school.
People often ignore 1990s born millenneals in these kinds of discussions.

I've always said that Gen Z is the post-Colombine generation and that this reality is just not something older generations can fully comprehend. It's pretty telling how casually Samantha said that some kid bought a gun to a school dance of hers. A real societal desensitization to how shocking and rare this SHOULD be has to happen before you can throw out something like that as an aside, like it's not a big deal. A whole generation shouldn't be raised with shooter drills and schooled into the acceptance that yeah, this probably could happen one day. It's because we're fucked, and we're broke. It's not a cute bohemian lifestyle, it's a tragedy. I'm 29, and I don't know anyone with a pension. I'd love one! They don't exist anymore. The security of having a reliable, good-paying job my whole career?! I've had 10 full-time office jobs in the last 8 years, and I've never made more than $16/hour. And I probably never will.

Also, I feel like shootings also define Gen Z. There was a hard lockdown at my school because someone wrote a threatening note in a bathroom. It was like super serious we were sent home early and they brought dogs and we had to leave our backpacks at school and we were just about to showcase HIgh School Musical when everybody ran out of the gym and we were so scared

I think Gen Z has been defined mostly by it (globally) and like they said in the video gen z want to see things get done for an example Greta Thunberg who is raising the issues we are facing, going to face and the responsibilities we humans need to take in order to achieve this. If anyone reading this gets upset I don't mean that the school shootings isn't a big topic since it is true that it has scared many and has defined the generation since millennial weren't taught on how to handle those situations in school, which is both scary and sad of course.

Being 18, born in 2003 (the Gemini thing was funny by the way. Lol. Also a Gemini). I personally find Gen-Z to be struggling with striving to do something with themselves, and is pretty lazy, doing less than the older generation did by the time they were in high school/early college (older Gen-Z, since younger ppl don't work or go to college of course). Less driving, working outside of school, less responsibility is put on them (taking less responsibility in general), and being incredibly spoiled by parents in a way that is not helping them grow. It is the "underestimated" generation I liked to call us. So, I guess if we show ppl how awesome we can be, it shocks ppl. Lol.

    • @riku1neo
      @riku1neo 3 года назад +1

You make a great point. It is a well documented fact that Gen Z is less independent from parents (have less jobs early, less responsibility, less freedom from parents). Not their fault, but I think it comes across in moments where they need authorities to solve their problems. I don't like what a kids says, better call the teacher... don't like what professors say, better call the faculty... don't like my boss, better call HR. Definitely a decreased ability to solve their own problem. When I had a bully as a millenial, I learned to avoid, get beaten up or learn how to fight, I actually didn't run to my mom.

As someone who was also born in 1993 (July 17,1993) I love his answers and resonate so much with what he said especially about 9/11 defining our generation it’s crazy I remembering in third grade and seeing the images on TV sing horrified and just knowing nothing was going to be the same. I just remember growing up in the 90s and loving life so much and feeling peace and I agree I feel like the feel good vibes of 90s bubblegum pop and sweet sitcoms like friends were slowly going to fade away and something different would take over. The crazy transition from the prosperity of the Clinton years slowly faded to chaos in one day. Also I think he should have pointed out the financial crisis of 2007 and the unique impact it had on millennials. Lastly, in contrast to what he said, I think the best thing about millennials is the interesting balance we have between technology and still valuing real human interaction. Because social media and high speed internet didn’t really exist until most of us were in high school we still had a pretty traditional childhood. We understand technology’s value, but we also understand the importance of true one on one time, not just texting or virtual interaction.

The internet means that instead of having literally no friends, at least they have online ones. I tend to think the internet is a good thing in this regard; if you're a weirdo in your small home town and can't make friends there, there's comfort in finding your people online. (It's me. I'm still surprised about how Gen Z, for the most part, wrote an ENTIRE musical! That's crazy to me.
(obvs not just Gen Z, but we were a big part of it. Gen Z and Millenials worked together to do that, but yeah. Still surprising)

I think religiously it has been the Gen Z era to be more accepting and had that influence on Millennial. I only say this because 2001 was the era of Millennial and that generation allowed the perpetuated the stereotype against Muslims. Gen Z was mainly born during this time and only sees people ostracizing a religion and thats all they remember from experience. I am one of those. I was in Kindergarten and don't remember the event itself from personal experience but I do know and have seen the exclusion and seclusion of an entire community that I have come to personally interact and learn from that I have connected with interfaithfully and beyond. I think that's a big influence of Gen Z over Millennial so maybe Millennial have been open to others but their generation has been influenced by Gen Z, which is also commendable as older people tend to set aside the beliefs of younger people.

  • @riku1neo

It is a well documented fact that Gen Z is less independent from parents (have less jobs early, less responsibility, less freedom from parents). Not their fault, but I think it comes across in moments where they need authorities to solve their problems. I don't like what a kids says, better call the teacher... don't like what professors say, better call the faculty and get them fired... don't like my boss, better call HR and post a social media message. Definitely a decreased ability to solve their own problems. When I had a bully as a millenial, I learned to avoid, get beaten up or learn how to fight, I actually didn't run to my mom.

2:40 The characteristic of acceptance and respect that Ryan claims was "started" by Millenials is literally the same claim made by Boomer hippies of the 1960s and 70s during the free love movement. The entrepreneurialism of taking new tech and proactively innovating and creating new kinds of business is literally what started the dotcom and internet world in which GenZ is doing the same thing. Conclusions: Generations aren't really different. People just act different when they are young compared to when they are older and they don't realize they have changed.

I ended up message from my school, note that I wasn't in school at the time and was still on the update list for some reason, informing me that there had been a gun scare at school. Something similar happened with my cousin, although she was in school.
I remember being maybe 6 or 7, maybe 8, and not wanting to go to school because I was scared that there would be a shooting.
It's a big problem and I dont think it's talked about nearly enough. Like there's talks about school shootings and 'oh that's terrible, i hope its fixed somehow' etc, but no one talks about the effect it has on students' psyche or anything like that.

For me millennial range is betwenn 1981-1991 (max 1993).
Having spent their childhood without mobile phones, without portable internet and above all without social networks ....
Those born in 1996/97 already had a so so different childhood from 1983 for example....
Millennials for me, must have entered the new millennium having, at least 10/12 years old.
