  • We continue our journey into the history of kendo, a sport whose roots lie in the samurai sword-fighting art of kenjutsu. In the past 150 years, kendo twice came in danger of disappearing altogether. We look at how it was able to overcome these crises and develop into the popular sport it is today. With martial arts expert Alex Bennett, we look back at the life of Kenkichi Sakakibara of the Jikishinkage-ryu school, a master of the sword who played a key role in kendo's development.

So implied by the narrator, commoners were allowed to train with bamboo swords prior to the 19th century but they could not use real ones?
