Thousands of hours of practice have been put into Andy's technique. There aren't any shortcuts when building skill.. Put the time in and it will happen. It is how Humans are capable of learning practically anything (with time). Repetition is the key to learning anything.
Andy gives excellent lessons and this one is a great intro to sweeps. He is using an elastic band (like a hair tie) at the nut to mute the unwanted string noise. I would suggest not using the band and making sure that you are practicing as cleanly as possible so as you progress your technique will be much cleaner.
Best sweep picking tute on the net I have seen so far. I've seen about 10 and this one gives you good simple building block pieces that fit into a hole. bravo andy :)
May this is a joke, but if not: I think that this lick is "pretty" easy to learn and the best for starting sweep picking and left and right hand synchronisation.
I swear that the sweep picking in the very beginning of the video sounds almost exactly the sweep picking in Jason Becker's Altitudes around the 3:00 mark.
That is exactly what I'm thinking too hahaha! If I can play along with him as he goes without thinking about it... I wonder what concoctions he is thinking up as he does this video even!
my philosophy is, if you can make it sound awesome on an acoustic, you can make it sound amazing on an electric, so its best to practice on an acoustic guitar before playing on an electric, just some advice
Awesome video. Andy James rules. BUT has anyone else noticed how much better his guitar sounds in this video. Thats because it has the EMG 85/60 installed instead of them terrible EMG 57/66. Those pickups suck.....BIG TIME.
Mistake Andy! At :37 you said hammer on at 10 on the B. Should be hammer on 12 on the B string. Also I notice you when you hit/pull off the 14 fret you sometimes use your pinky and and sometimes your ring finger. For discipline and muscle memory shouldn't we stick with certain fingering?
Problems I have: 1. My hammer ons aren't NEARLY as loud as the picking so I need to pick while coming back up like at 1:00 when he goes back up, I HAVE to pick those or no noise is made. Amp problem? 2. Hand can't get comfortable with sweeping? 3. How do I mute some strings and let some ring? 4. I feel like my wrist does most of the picking in this, is this normal?
+Zuiax I have the same problem, my hammer-ons are too quiet and I get lots of noise aswell. I also think this is kinda an amp problem. The good and expensive amps have a very good noise gate (and my Podfarm 2 just sounds good with a lot of distortion), I recommend you just use a hairband around your fretboard to mute played strings... If you are not comfortable with sweeping you should just sweep I guess :D I practised both hand individually with the easy minor and major patterns. Not very diversified but just do this while watching TV or something. I started to learn sweeping when I just played for 3 months because I just wanted to play some Avenged Sevenfold solos (especially Afterlife) I think you can be able to sweep a little bit after half a year. When youre going to the higher notes mute played strings with your picking hand (just the latest string u played should ring, not two) and when you go back to the low string try to mute with the fingers (this seems way harder for me). and just hold your pick how you feel the most comfortable. I hope you understand this shit and no english ripperino? :D
He has emgs, which have very much compression which makes it more the same, so idk what more to do more than to hammer on as hard as possible and also don't pick to hard or else it will be high contrast between hammer on and picking.
That is good in some cases but if you're practising reducing tension in your playing then it's not wise to do so on a different type of instrument. Acoustic guitars usually require slightly more tension to play than electric guitars. But for things like sweeping, yes you can benefit greatly from practicing on an acoustic :)
What do you do so that the strings won't ring out Cuz I try to palm mute so the strings won't ring to much but I still get the low ringing and its obviously that I'm not playing it clean.
TriviumAnterior Oh that's pretty neat also do you know books or good websites top learn scales or arpeggios I'm having difficult times looking for correct scales or arpeggios
my philosophy is a bit harder... i like to practic my licks on a bass after i did on the acoustic... so my fingers are stronger and more flexible when i have to play it on my les paul...
i like when Andy James says to play something that i already know how to play..and if i can play it his fingers must be crying from under-complexity...
strange dimished example, why not just go up and down in the sme shape, that's more of a broken chord than an arpeggio. Also why not upstroke the note on the b-string for consistency?
Ι suspect that people who want to learn how to play arpeggios, want to know something like how to hold the pick etc. Knowing what fret is what note is not exactly the point.
How is it cheating? Just a different phrasing option. Is it cheating to use legato playing instead Alternate picking? No, again it's just a different phrasing option with a technique
Andy James is one of my favorite guitarists due to the way he can model the notes and scales into his music.
Thousands of hours of practice have been put into Andy's technique. There aren't any shortcuts when building skill.. Put the time in and it will happen. It is how Humans are capable of learning practically anything (with time). Repetition is the key to learning anything.
This man is also super special talented guitarist ❤️
NEVER QUIT!! Embrace every challenge you face with open arms as it will make you that much better!
i've learned sweep picking, and thanks goes to Andy James!!
i love andy james lessons, always learn something from him
Thank you James , apreciated that lesson

Thanks Andy. Good exercises to learn
4:17 helped me with the picking SO MUCH!!!
Best sweep picking tute on the net I have seen so far.

i am so in love with this guitar
Great playing!
this is very good thanks for the video
Nice beginning sweep licks
Very good teacher-
super!
Thanks to Andy
Thanks man you are great. More lesson master
As soon as he says "......that I even find difficult" I just thought how can us mere mortals do it then Andy!
Andy should be on the G3 tour definitely!
His guitar is so amazing \m/
TNX, finally I gonna do it! Hopes I can play it soon...lol
It always looks easy untill you try!
That really helped :D keep up the good work man :)
Nice. That is also little jingle for cartoon "mighty mouse to save the day"
I'm trying to learn the guitar,i may as well have chosen rocket science, its too hard.it makes you appreciate how good the pros are.
because its his style of performing the lick, everyone performs it in different ways. Comfort is the name of the game
As he is one of the best metal guitarists in the world, I was very surprised to learn that he only sweeps half of those 3s arpeggios.
This is good
When Andy is descending he tends to hammer on from nowhere instead of downward sweeps. Michael Romeo does this too a lot.
Andy, please make a video, where you talking about playing speed increase.. PLEASE
There must be like a thousand lessons of this stuff
That is exactly what I'm thinking too hahaha! If I can play along with him as he goes without thinking about it... I wonder what concoctions he is thinking up as he does this video even!
Put on 3.03 and activate subtitles then enjoy xd
SOS
Whenever I try to sweep pick I mess up how to mute the strings I already played .
Should I palm mute or use left hand to mute .
Both
Eishu Verma it honestly depends on the notes you are sweeping however a good combination of both is always good
Pretty basic.
But he isn't showing his skills there to be honest. Listen to his own stuff. Thats just awesome.
By far, my favorite player.
how about jason becker stlye sweep picking?? :D
I wonder if he does voice over work for Gieco Insurance on the side? I swear he sounds just like the gecko! Great technique by the way
He is a god!
thx bro.

How big are the strings on his guitar
8 years later this shit makes since

It's very easy to do actually
Yeah I was thinking that
Reminds me of the Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle solo.

Please next issue about Marty Friedman and style analysis
Into the mouth of hell we march 04:26
I thought the EXACT same thing when I heard it man!
How would you string skip while sweeping?
mute the string you wont to skip i guess
Interesting. I'd never thought of hammering the third note.
michael firkins has a great sweep tutorial dvd out
play it slow then gradually increase speed and it's totally playable :) no quitting bro ! :)
Plus it's more a matter of wrist movement that the way you hold your pick. Forever an example, Marty Friedman !
Humm it's a basic exercice dude. It's not very easy but i think it's the perfect exercise for beginning the sweeping technique
Should I practice this with distortion?
+acacar ignjatovic Practice with distortion to get the notes separated properly. Practice it clean to improve your volume consistency.
Thankss
acacar ignjatovic You're welcome ;)
thanks andy james for reminding me how much I SUCK
What do you do so that the strings won't ring out Cuz I try to palm mute so the strings won't ring to much but I still get the low ringing and its obviously that I'm not playing it clean.
jesus lozano Taking it slower and working on getting a more clean sweep is very important. It is hard but si se puede
jesus lozano Hair-tie at the head of his guitar
TriviumAnterior What's the hair tie for.
jesus lozano It stops the string noise. Have you noticed when bands tie cloths around the headstock for recording.
Same thing here
TriviumAnterior Oh that's pretty neat also do you know books or good websites top learn scales or arpeggios I'm having difficult times looking for correct scales or arpeggios
this guy is fucking OP
What model is your guitar?
aj-1 his signature model of esp/ltd
Thanks. Great guitar
Where`s part 2 ?
my philosophy is a bit harder... i like to practic my licks on a bass after i did on the acoustic... so my fingers are stronger and more flexible when i have to play it on my les paul...
tab??
Well hes got a few years ahead of me, but what does that matter?
Use your eyes and ears. It's a Bm triad as Andy pointed out.
The title of video says "Sweep Picking Lesson" What you hoped??
i think i saw the first one by matt heafy of trivium
i like when Andy James says to play something that i already know how to play..and if i can play it his fingers must be crying from under-complexity...
strange dimished example, why not just go up and down in the sme shape, that's more of a broken chord than an arpeggio.

what guitar is that? :)
It's the Esp AJ-1...his signature guitar:)
👍🏻
into the mouth of hell!
He finds it easier to do.
Am I the only one that is afraid of the slowed down sweeps too?
4:26 Into the Mouth of Hell We March anyone?
First part: THE EYE OF STORM SOLO BFMV
who needs luca turilli
3:03 he licks his lips cos its sounds so tasty
Lol... shweep.
He absolutly looks like Grumpy-Cat
Ι suspect that people who want to learn how to play arpeggios, want to know something like how to hold the pick etc. Knowing what fret is what note is not exactly the point.
I thought it was cheating hammering on the B when going down again
jizzed in my pant after seeing first excersise
hahaha I feel you
..ah, 'whole' I meant to say :p
25-99 g.
..because of a mini cabs in twelve mm height you should be on amount right
Just sayin'
Thats from bring me the horizon i used to make out with medusa
which part?
''here is the first exercise'' 0:13
I QUIT
Damn. Cant mute :/
the point is that he's better than you
Why not? Easy, if you have time to do it six hours a day.
sweat picking :P
It really isn't that hard unless you sit down and practice it.
How is it cheating? Just a different phrasing option. Is it cheating to use legato playing instead Alternate picking? No, again it's just a different phrasing option with a technique
LOOOOOOL jajajaja
