He says "you know" 50 times in this video. I counted.
lol OMG. Its a lot of "you know". 😂😂
So you should know.........
...and stuff like that...
It's common
😂
"I used to be a huge zakk wylde fan". .
...until I became 3x better
Zakk Wylde would smoke you a guitar battle
+Timmy Allison He's saying andy is better than zakk dude...
J Schecter Haha... Yeah. Andy is way better. Not only technically, but he plays with a lot more "feel".
Yeah the whole pentatonic scale and pinch harmonic every note thing gets boring pretty fast maybe even annoying (at least to my ears)
Corry Burton no he cant, hence why he hasent lol. Zakk can not be compared to an andy james lol. He would be the first to tell you.
@ Danuet
"He said it 48 times in 4:28. That's a 'you know' every 5.58 seconds!!!"hahahahaahahaha
stop saying "you know" If we knew we wouldn't be watching a lesson. .....you know
I don't know;)
His voice doesn't match his face.
Yea he sounds.Rupert Grint from harry potter series.
Lool
Hannah Licht never does
Mad props Andy for giving paul gilbert the credit as the master of alternate picking!
this guy is an absolute monster on the guitar!
actually i dont know....
The real question is Andy how I get my scalp to shine as brightly as yours? ha ha.:v.
The penny drops...........and I can play like Andy James.
Been playing 30+ yrs and my penny hasn't dropped hahaha
14 years...still fuckin waiting
Put 2:11 and captions on
No, contrary to popular belief, we don't pirate our own DVDs
After watching this vid just once... "I Know"
@skycaptain141 29, big 30 next year :)
Paul Gilbert discussing in one of his instructional videos that he likes to start alt picking phrases off with an upstroke, at least I believe that's what he said. Anyways, I found that starting certain phrases with an upstroke helped me play faster for whatever reason.
He said it 48 times in 4:28. That's a 'you know' every 5.58 seconds!!!
Not at all, some players (like Satriani or Garsed) pick as little as possible but its for the legato sound that it creates. Played like Zakk Wylde and Al Di Meola pick everything for that more aggressive percussive sound. Others like Paul Gilbert Try to get a nice balance
Just a question here. In building up technique, muscle memory, and stamina when diving into this how long are the intervals of time? Is it three minutes.
If I promise to tab them out for you now, will you come check them out on facebook? ;)
I learned how to say "you know" in this video. haha
@ManiQu Hi there, yes you can contact Andy via our Forum. We will send you a link to your youtube inbox, hope it helps!
errr,,, British
No, Michael's video starts with a 16th note exercises 11 12 14 11 12 11 14 12 11 etc (obviously with the string change in the same place!)
Post goes out every Tuesday to Middle Earth it can take a while - thankyou for your patience!
shoot it over and we can take note of it for next time, or you can hit him up on the forum :)
thanks for the tip, i used some of the scale patterns you showed already but i can't even touch the speed you played through it. anyways, i'll keep practicing till the day i can play that fast. to all the people at lick library, keep up the amazing playing!
26 dislikes to shredding Poseidon - Andy James really, is this you Kerry King ?;]
Hi gallion lion, these videos are short clips as they were left over from a webcast which we did with Andy James back in 2010. If you after lessons on speed and accurancy with Andy James let us know and we can direct you to the relevant DVD. All the best Licklibrary!
certainly!
All links in the 'About' section of this video have been updated! You can now view the Andy James Webcast in full by following the link!
@jessbpowers Thats some great advice! take it slow and gradually build your speed up!
muscle memory and the importance of being super relaxed in both arms and hands even at fast speeds are the key things you must know to get good at this. It never gets mentioned almost which is a real shame.
Still working on the penny drop
Andy is by far the best metal oriented guitar instructor around!
It's been done and passed over to the Facebook team, expect it to be up soon!
I will use the phrase "When the Penny drops" at least once today. I'm screwed if anyone asks me to explain what that means.
Great, with you I can get better at guitar and my British accent at the same time.
david beckham drives me nuts - if he was teaching guitar this is what he would sound like - you know you know - good guitar player but so irritating ! - you know?
After a little over a year of practicing alternate picking my penny has FINALLY dropped!!!
Wes Hinds Brilliant ! Keep going Wes! If you have any videos online be sure to share them with us!
I think it's also about synchronization between the two hands. A slightly slower but accurately picked run to me is much more impressive than a faster but unclear or sloppy run.
I recently had that penny drop moment. And his face summarised it perfectly. After years of frustration that I couldnt alternate pick scales properly, now I can, meh... Now I'm on to the next thing I cant do!
I've been practicing that little Gibert lick for over 10 years. I still can't play it very fast. I always hit the upper string when coming back from the lower string.
not that we know of :s
Via facebook we guess :)
Done :)
Penny has not dropped at all for me 😂
Keep trying!
some one knows how to get that distort?
at first it looks like he doesn't have an arm :D
I taught Andy James....,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, how to use his IPhone X when he came into the store I work at a little while ago....😁
@EWT66 Look up ''Worst guitarplayers'', you'll get a taste of the quick licks dvd
YOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOWYOUKNOW!!!
@TotalRetardedness Without seeing your picking style I can't really say specifically what you may need to change, but I am also a lefty that plays right handed. I will say from my experience playing right handed when I'm actually left handed that legato or slurred licks came easy to me, but my alternate picking is also a weakness of mine. I've found that there is no secret to success just use proven exercises for alternate picking, stay relaxed, and put the time in practicing.
Master of alternate picking...... Micha.
Paul gilbert? Whos that?
Haha jk (MAB is by far the king of alt pic but i love paul gilberts music better)
don't get me wrong m.a.b is sheer master of techniques but i like paul more too because he just got those feels and rhythm, and he plays killer jazz
@intii93 judging from your post, you have the patience and discipline to get things done. Just make sure your wrist is relaxed (firm but relaxed. squeezing the pick for high attack and small movement is different from flexing your whole arm). It's just going to take a great deal longer than 1 1/2 years. time is on your side, take advantage of it and you'll be shredding like it's cloud 9 in no time.
@shreddernuo Haha no problem. And most music stores, at least ones that cater to guitarists, have them. I got mine at the local shop. If there's a Guitar Center near you, I know they have them, but pretty much anywhere that sells guitar accessories. If you don't have any luck there, it's really easy to find them online. Just Google "guitar footstool." And most are adjustable, so if you're really short or tall, or just sitting in a different-sized chair, you should be okay. Hope that helps!
@shreddernuo Yeah, I'm the same way about that, and it's called the classical position (since that's how classical guitarists are taught to hold it. Go figure. :P). I started off playing on my right knee, but I signed up for a classical guitar class, and when I started doing it the other way (combined with a footstool), it was so much easier reaching all of the notes, and I didn't have to strain myself near as much to play! So I definitely recommend trying it, along with the foot rest.
@dc08bfmv Start slow man ;) when youre'starting to feel you're straining the arm, you're going to fast ;) Try a real simple lick, like the first one Andy showed here, and start playing it at 100 bpm triplets, or even slower, so that you play it perfectly without any effort! Then go up 3 bpm every thime untill it's perfect and without straing again, and move up that way!
@plaidzincs It just isn't a phrase that's really used over here. We speak the same language over here, but you could almost say we have different dialects. We each have different phrases, means of expression, even some words mean different things. I had never heard it before either, however because of the context it wasn't too hard to pick up
@leopower7 You will find your own way of doing it tbh. 45 degree angle is just like a example. I wouldn't follow this word for word but you will get what angle is comfortable to you when you practise it more. It is just one of them things that you can't do one day but practise and you will know it the next.
at 1:02 its 11 12 14 on d string and the 11 on g (UPSTROKE!) then come back down again exactly reverse
remember strictly use alternate picking up and down
afterwards he moves 2 frets down and does the same then down step again then return to normal position and go 2 step up twice
hope that helps
@stevegrierson LTD's are serious instruments. Some of the are far superior to guitars two or three times the price, so if he happens to have found one he likes and that he thinks is really good for him, then the ideal that the more expensive/handmade guitar must immediately better can be lost.
@karnivorus dude fucking same. I've been trying to pick fast for years and hearing the 45 degrees thing (even though I kind of already knew it) has made a huge difference. Since yesterday. Ridiculous that such a small thing can make such a huge difference. Wish I had seen this vid years ago!
Isn't it better to put the metronome down to a comfortable speed and just improvise some alternate picking licks and gradually increase the tempo? I mean there are so many patterns I wanna work on, that I can't just do an exercise on all of them.
Dear Lick Library, this may seem like a retarded question but what kind of hair bands dose Andy use? No not taking the piss, i mean for the guitar ;-)
All the ones i've tried dont seem to do the trick.
If you could reply, ta muchly.
I don't mean to offend you or anything, but that's the biggest bullshit. Michael Angelo uses both perfectly. The thing is people tend to not want to learn both for some reason. Oh Guthrie uses both as well, in fact lots of other players do.
is the speed then reliant on alternate picking and not just on the speed of the left hand pulling off and hammering on? i might be wrong, but i thought most guitarist picked as little as they could and moved really fast with their left hands
@SatyrX09 there are a lot of versatile guitarists. Nuno Bettencourt, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Rick Emmett, Steve Hackett, John Frusciante, Paul Gilbert etc. Not comparing their chops, but all these guys are very versatile.
@xXokcoolXx Yeah, I can only think of one person who has a versatile guitar playing and that's Corey Beaulieu, he's in a metalcore band but really outstanding player... lol I actually mentioned ZackyV because he says "You Know" much much more...
Hi Andy, I've been practising guitar for a year and a half now... Is there a tutuorial for the riffs for the song "The End".. I'm just not able to follow that song..
I've felt the elbow strain at times. How do i get over it??
i dont have that problem with picking or moving across strings or even string skipping but i get caught when it comes to moving the riff up or down the neck. am i holding the neck to tight or is there some im doing weird with left arm
The little new nugget I got from this is to try and think about accents, something we all do automatically, but probably a major part of why sometimes my playing feels liquid and sometimes I have potato hands.
I have a question lick library why wont you make learn to play steve vai vol 4, 5, 6 and so on with other dvds as well the second you had a next vol of vai or other artist I would buy and also learn to play lamb of god
@koenie201 depends on how much you work on it, it could take a week, it could take a month
but if you take it slow and gradually build up good technique and dont do it sloppy all of a sudden ull be andy james!
@SHPrada so purchase their stuff, there's the actual playing lesson. Otherwise, you can listen and understand what he is saying and put it on practice, not everything has to be demosntrated note by note, that's just lazy.
No, he's not Australian. He's is 100% British. Unless he was just born in Australia but moved at a young age to England or something. That's an English accent and he doesn't sound Australian at all.
@littlealien123 He uses Dunlop Big Stubby picks. But it really doesnt matter. Get a Pick that you feel comfortable with. You can never go wrong with a jazz lll. MAB has been using jazz lll picks for years.
How do Take Skype Lessons with Andy?!
Dear LickLibrary,
how do you make the sound jump out so much that you hardly have to pick? Despite treble, compressor and gain, I am nowhere near that tone. Thanks in advance!
@SatyrX09 Yup! I've heard of him. Although it's rare I listen to A7X, or much metalcore, since it's not my cup of tea. But there sure are some outstanding players in the genre! =)
@Channel450 That is what happens when people watch videos and they never ever touch their guitar. Too many people watching videos, making comments, and letting their guitar collect dust.
when him and Danny Gill say 45 degree angle, i wish they could be a bit more specific. as in angle to the strings, ground, angle from the pointy part of the pick? im confused.
@Shyuum I'm not trolling; I don't mean to put down Andy; he's got some solid advice and chops. Its just plain ignorant to say Paul is "THE" master of alternate picking.
Shawn Lane is probably the best alternate picker ever, if not maybe John McLaughlin. Paul Gilbert is crazy good, but he's definitely not the fastest or most accurate.
Got the metronome...skipped over the drum machine, and ordered a Boss JS-10. It'll be like having a band...that won't drink your beer, or bring their girlfriends.
@usetheforce93 Different sound, different feel. Alternate picking sounds way more pronounced and accurate, while legato/tapping sounds way more fluid, that's all!
i have problem with my right hand.. my left can play fast but the right hand can't reach it.. it always annoying me every i have practice.. hehehehe
Could you atleast give us the tabs for 2:16 and 1:02
because how are we suppose to learn how to do them without knowing what exact frets your picking?
@codebabe Corey Beaulieu is versatile for a metalcore guitarist.. But I'm so gonna search all these guitarist, though I already know Paul Gilbert :D
i have that same problem metronomes i cant do i fuck up but when i hear a drum beat i like i jst lock into it and almost make a song out of that beat
What guitar model are you using, I am unable to find a 6 string guitar that looks like this under ESP!!! How much did you get it for??
During my guitar years I learned one thing, alternate pickers cannot play the same licks with economy picking so well and vice versa.-
@diamonddust22 I practice guitar 3 hours a day... I use these videos to learn, i buy videos from them... And Andy can shred... Relax dude
I find that my left hand cant keep up with my right hand, is there a way of making it so that both hands can play at high speeds?
hello lick library is there a q and a that andy james personally I have a question of expert natural that needs expert advice, cheers
It must have something to do with being english, but I actually didn't notice him say "You know" once until I saw the comments
How to master the neck by using scales? Can anyone explain plz
hey licklibrary! are you guys going to make a steel panther dvd soon? they mayB look a little gay, but their music is killer :D
hey lick library and andy greeting from colombia your're making a fucking good work y love see this videos they help me a lot
