Hi guys, I'm from Catania and currently I still live here, thank you for sharing the wonders we have with the world, you make us so proud. the story of the elephant, however, is this: According to an ancient legend, the name "U Liotru" derives from the popular dialect, and is a misrepresentation of the name Eliodoro. In fact, it is said that the people of Catania chose the elephant as their symbol, referring to the statue that this phantasmagoric character, noble and magician of Catania, carved in lava stone and to which he even gave life to make the life of the inhabitants of the city impossible. they had chosen as bishop of their diocese. To stop him, Saint Leo II exorcised him by taking him to a furnace where he burned him alive. Although the statue of the elephant sculpted by him was placed outside the walls, the people of Catania subsequently decided to make it the focal point of the whole city. Coming out of the legendary sphere, it is said that in 1239 the people of Catania wanted the elephant as the official symbol of the city, and that the statue was brought into the city by the Benedictines, who placed it under the arch called "Liodoro" The reason for the construction "do Liotru" would be attributed to the fact that the people of Catania saw the statue as a talisman able to protect the center from the destructive eruptions of Etna. But let's see what is the history of the symbol of Catania and the Elephant Fountain.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Catania. The city has a Roman Theatre (teatro romano) and a Roman Amphitheatre (anfiteatro romano) in two different locations not far from each other. The difference between the two is that in the former you had theatrical performances whereas in the latter you had gladiator games and other often bloody shows. In terms of shape, Roman theatres have a semicircular appearance whereas amphitheatres have a slightly elongated elliptical shape (Colosseum included). Today you can only see a small section of the Roman amphitheatre, the rest of it lies under the surrounding buildings. As to the rubbish you found in the city, the reasons for that are several, i.e. complete lack of respect of many citizens for the community (I'm allowed to say that because I was born and grew there), useless politicians, landfills that have been full for long time, unwillingness to build waste-to-energy plants, last but not least infiltration of criminal groups in the business of the rubbish. Lastly, regarding your comparing of Palermo and Catania, I agree with you. Palermo has a past of capital, there was a time when it was the most populous city of Europe; IMO a bit underrated compared to other Italian touristic cities, it's got an architectural heritage second to none. Catania used to be the third largest city in Sicily until the earthquake that unfortunately destroyed Messina in 1908 when half of its population died. Today Catania is a vibrant city with the oldest university of the island. Keep up and have fun 😀👍.

If you Google the story of the elephant of Catania you will find a story that it is the symbol of Catania. This black elephant is also called 'U Liotru' and it is the symbol of Catania. The name probably comes from Eliodoro, a nobleman from Catania who would have liked to be a bishop, but never became one. The story goes that he met a Jewish magician who initiated him into the world of magic. Eliodoro is said to have made the elephant himself and rode it to Constantinople, where he was burned at the stake. The elephant survived and thus became the symbol of Catania. The fountain was designed in 1736 by Vaccarini who got this idea from Bernini's elephant, which stands in front of the Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. The elephant - how could it be otherwise - is made of black lava stone. The obelisk is originally from Egypt. The elephant protects the city from the eruptions of Mount Etna.
Love this place! Everywhere looks so charming. One summer in Korea Dominic and I might have ordered yangyeum chicken delivery more times than I can count. One day we ordered it twice 🤣🤣 great choice on the food!
Elephant symbol :The name is connected to the magician Eliodoro, who lived in the 8th century and rode the elephant to carry out his magical deeds. In Aci Castello another ancient legend was told: an elephant who chased all the harmful animals to the city from Catania and was chosen as a symbol.

There's certainly no beach up on Etna 😉 You should also know that we luv beaches by now Kryxn 😅 - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers I know you like beaches. It just that you are close to Etna now so I meant that if you're doing a beach town next than it looks like you're skipping Etna. Which would be tragic :)
You cannot beat Southern Italy. Have you considered going to the Gargano? I am in love with Mattinata and Monte Sant’Angelo and really the entire area. On the other coast Tropea is GORGEOUS.
We did and there's honestly just so many places and 'hard' decisions to make Steve haha - Trevor
You guys are so fun, but also so blessed to see all of this. I was in Messina and Taormina and viewed Isola Bella which was beautiful. Enjoy so happy to watch your videos.
So glad you're enjoying the videos 🤗 - Anna
Another great video! Trevor, hope your family is well in North Sydney after Fiona!!🙏🙏
Power is still out but I know they are okay for sure 👍 - Trevor
Hello to my fellow Scotians! Thanks for another great video. We'll be going to Sicily for three weeks in September and we're super exited. I think we'll definitely be eating at Panda while in Catania 😊. As for your on-going search for a pied-de-terre, I would highly recommend visiting Malta. It's a small island nation on the Mediterranean, just south of Sicily. It's a little smaller than the island of Montreal. I think that you'll enjoy it. Keep the videos coming and safe and happy travels.
1 minute in - slow down girl !!
Spent a lot of time in Catania and loved it! So I'm super excited that you're there and loving it, too!
What a city Christine! It's our fav so far in Sicily 🤗 - Anna
Did you see any bats at night?
If you want to visit Sicily, especially Catania, we recommend to hold a nife or a gan in your hand in order to defend yourself from aggressive natives. You may lose your health or life as one tourist from Poland, who is now in critical condition in hospital after being attacked in Piazza Stesicoro. If you want to live, stay away from Sicily.
I love my city! Thanks guys!!
Despite how we are treated we live and love ❤❤
Mmmm Ragu arrangini 😅 the pea sauce is different btw
🙂👏🙋👍
🤙
Korean in Catania love it! Glad you got some arancini though :)
Not to bash Italy by any means but why the trash? Going from a city like Vienna to anywhere in Italy, it’s night and day. Does Italy just not have the funds or people do not care as much?
Going to catania next month fr. Korea 🇰🇷 saw u guys have visited the Korean restaurant and decided to leave a comment ha ha 😂Did U rental car there? How was the public transportation?
Hi from Halifax! Currently researching for a trip to Sicily and stumbled on your videos!

Is it expensive I wanna go back for a summer
You guys are so fun, but also so blessed to see all of this. I was in Messina and Taormina and viewed Isola Bella which was beautiful. Enjoy so happy to watch your videos.
🤗
Awesome! Just moved to Catania!
you need to visit solarino sicily
Surrounded by some of the best food in all of Italy then eats Korean? 😞
New here I take it? We have full videos on Italian food. You missed the point, it’s to show there’s more than only Italian food here. Plus it’s one of the top rated restaurants in the city
just what I wanted to see, Canadian tourists eating Korean food in Catania!
We have full videos on Italian food FYI. The idea here was to show you there is options for everything. Plus, the Korean restaurant is one of the top rated in Catania - Trevor
Mate, I'm Sicilian born and living in Catania. I'm afraid you made a huge mistake about arancini..... These dishes aren't "a few different" then these of Palermo, but that are utterly different, you can't compare that rice balls cooked with a few meat inside that (arancine palermitane) to a masterpiece, a huge enjoyment!
Overmore I saw arancini you eat and, I can swear that was one of the worst. You know, arancino isn't at all a easy dish to make, but if you find that ones whome are able for that you'll get delighted and never forget that experience. Trust thewebhorse
Ours are the best for sure!!
We cook with love in catania ❤
