  • The Chief Minister says he will not cede an iota of British sovereignty in treaty negotiations and would walk away immediately if there was a risk of this.
Fabian Picardo was speaking to GBC after the UK Parliament's European Scrutiny Committee again expressed alarm over planned arrangements for entry and exit from Gibraltar.
The predominantly Brexiteer committee heard from Junior Brexit Minister David Rutley. Committee members suggested British Sovereignty could be diminished at the airport.
Mr Picardo told GBC: “over my dead body”.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister told GBC he does not think the European Scrutiny Committee can create problems for Gibraltar as they have to respect the will of the people of Gibraltar.
He said Brexit, and Gibraltar’s exclusion from the UK’s own post Brexit Agreement, led to the complicated negotiations which - he says - continue on a very positive basis with the UK, EU and Spain.
Mr Picardo stressed he represents the people of Gibraltar in this process.

I voted remain but it was rare that I heard anything about Gibraltar. It was always and often the NI protocol.

I think most of the 20% of British people who are not residents of Gibraltar and who fly into Gibraltar as tourists, family visitors or business people etc. will tolerate Schengen checks as necessary to a good deal for Gibraltar. As a regular visitor, that is certainly my view. I would not, however, given our recent experience with the EU, for example with the NI protocol, discount the possibility of the EU seizing upon this arrangement as another means of seeking to punish the UK for having the temerity to leave the EU.

I am sorry to say that as a mainland Brit, I did vote in support of Brexit. Lied to by Cameron, May, and Johnson, Brexit has been a disaster. Theoretically, it is a good idea for the UK, but appalling in reality, with little concern shown for our other territories.
General Franco simply closed the border. The British government threw away the key and forgot about Gibraltar.

What has Franco to do with this mess caused by Brexit? And by the way, he died almost 50 years ago. How long are you guys going to use him to play the victim? A couple of centuries?
