From junior-high through college, my friends and I occasionally talked about the Beatles' reuniting to play in Moscow and particularly their doing "Back in the U.S.S.R." This was fueled, if I recall, by the rumor popping up now and then that it was about to happen. This show was as close as the fantasy came to reality. I watched it on tv with goose bumps. Almost as good and quite unexpected were the interviews in which Russians talked about trading bootleg cassettes of the Beatles in dank alleys while keeping an eye out for the police, and about studying blurry mimeographed photos of the Beatles, trying to figure which one was which, all of which contributed to the dissident movement by making young Rusians think that, if the West had produced the Beatles, it couldn't be all that bad. Thirty-some years after the Beatles went their separate ways, we discovered that they'd been even more important than we realized. I have one complaint about this clip, though. It omits McCartney's saying to the band in the instant before they start playing "This should go over big," an example of British understatement that's thrilling in its context.

What a lot of people dont know is that this song was written at the time when the then Prime Minister of the UK Harold Wilson declared a new campaign called "I'm backing Britain" - there were posters everywhere declaring it. McCartney wrote this song saying effecting saying "I'm backing (back in) the USSR" as a response to that - people in the UK at the time got the joke (it was lost on the Americans) - obviously it didnt go down well with the UK government :-) Like McCartney gave a damn.
+Professor John Dunn Actually, it was written in India in February 1968, when the Beatles were attending a retreat at the ashram of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India. Along with close members of their entourage, the Beatles were accompanied by others such as Donovan and the Beach Boys Mike Love. It is often considered a tribute to Back In The USA by Chuck Berry, but it is more a parody of all the songs written by American artists praising life the US. The Beatles had spent quite a bit of time in the US by 1968, and given that it was the height of the Vietnam War, and there were mass anti-war protests not just all over America but also in London (and Paris) at the time, both Lennon and McCartney considered these songs by US artists more than a little self-serving and somewhat sickly. It was during the retreat in India that McCartney and Lennon got into a conversation with Mike Love, in which they were dismissive of such songs, observing that they conveyed a misleadingly tranquil & saccharin image of American life. It was observed by Lennon and McCartney that the Beach Boys were major culprits of this genre of music, and boasted that the Beatles could write something equally self-serving about the UK or indeed about any country, for that matter. Informal and good-natured competition between the Beatles and the Beach Boys was at its peak, at the time. The Beatles arrival in North America in 1964 had challenged the Beach Boys chart supremacy, and as they saw how the Beatles music evolved rapidly into ever more avant grade territory, the Beach Boys had responded. The release of the Beatles album Rubber Soul on 3 December 1965, had been followed by the Beach Boys with Pet Sounds some six months later (released: 16 May 1966). Indeed, the release of Rubber Soul directly caused Brian Wilson to change course with Pet Sounds (which was already a work in progress, at that moment), delaying its release beyond the original target of Christmas 1965. The Beatles next brought out the album Revolver (released: 5 August 1966), before following this with Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (released: 1 June 1967). The next Beach Boys album was Smiley Smile, which was not released until 18 September 1967. Ironically, Smiley Smile was better received in the UK than in the US, peaking at no. 2 in the UK album charts (versus only no. 9 in the US). On 22 November 1967, the Beatles released The Magical Mystery Tour (whilst still in shock after the death of Brian Epstein by drug overdose on 27 August the same year). The Beach Boys released Wild Honey three weeks later on 18 December. The album Friends was then released by the Beach Boys on 24 June 1968. Thus, by the time Lennon and McCartney good-naturedly gave Mike Love a hard time about the Beach Boys music genre, it was early 1968 (between the release of the Beach Boys albums Wild Honey and Friends), both Mike Love and indeed all the Beach Boys had become quite counter-cultural themselves. Accordingly, Mike Love challenged Lennon and McCartney (principally, McCartney) to make good on their boast, and to write such a self-serving song about the USSR (Americas principal opponent in the Cold War). The morning after this conversation, McCartney appeared at breakfast, and previewed the lyrics and melody of Back In The USSR for Mike Love. Love liked the song, and encouraged McCarney to include lyrics praising the beauty of the girls of the USSR, to make the parody complete. Correspondingly, Back In The USSR was released as a single and as a track on The Beatles Double White album, on 22 November 1968. You are right that there was an Im Backing Britain campaign at the time, which had to do with Britains economy being in disarray under Harold Wilsons first Labour administration. It was opposed by Britains Trades Union Council (ie the TUC), which saw it as a way for UK companies to squeeze extra work out of their employees without additional pay. But despite what it says on the Wikipedia page, the Im Backing Britain campaign thus had nothing to do with the composition of Back In the USSR by the Beatles. It should be noted that the link between the two in Wikipedia is made without any attribution to reference or source material, and has been contradicted both by Paul McCartney and by numerous biographies of the Beatles. And no such link between the two is made on the Wikipedia page devoted to the Beatles Double White album, either.
+Nick Donnelly I thought it was a parody on the beach boys California Girls. Comparing women in different parts of the USSR. Similar to the beach boys in their California Girls song.
Boy! What does this song mean? Let me try - for starters it is the most inclusive Pop song I have ever heard. Taking a very earthy form of music and dropping it smack in the middle of a totalitarian state and daring any establishment to shut it down. 'can't help but notice how the Russians warm to this song. Just another reminder how the Beatles had a handle for the pulse of the people (to include those of the exclusive Soviet Union). And here we have Paul playing his signature bass guitar and someone in the audience flying a red umbrella. And all those pretty Soviet women.... Man, but I love Rock-and-Roll!
The Beatles - they conquered the World starting with USA in February 1964 followed by many other countries. Sadly Russia remained out of reach until after they split and two of the four had died, but Paul finally took Moscow and other cities by storm in 2003. I hope Putin enjoyed the concert. It's a pity he's misinterpreted the meaning of 'Back in the USSR'.
Seeing that russian flag combined with the british and the happy russian people dancing gives me hope. I'm sure this is what the future will look like, it's just a matter of time..
Oh Gawd ! They didn't start with the USA, they ended with the USA !!! Capitol Records would not release the Beatles songs in the US, for perceived lack of interest for a US audience. The rest of the world had full-on Beatlemania by the time they finally showed up on the Ed Sullivan Show in '64. Only then did you get with the program.
Holy crap! 1:32......Andre makirevich is in the audience....."Russian John Lennon" is at the McCartney concert....they NEED to do a duet, and they NEED to do it in Odessa Ukraine (aka russian Liverpool)
Finally I understand the value of this concert, especially this song, for Russian people. The circle is complete, the Beatles finally beat the bolsheviks. I'd like to find videos about peoples reactions. Is there any?
My heart bleeds for these poor downtrodden people as one particular audience member contemplates the return of the 'good old days ' when he will send their family members off to get blown to bits in neighbouring countries once again !! PEACE and LOVE !!! XXX

When you think the song is around 50 years old - is it on the White Album, I can’t remember - will have to check mine.
Must have been a fab night there, on the Red Square! Man how Cool!!!..
Paul's playing B.C Place Stadium, Vancouver November 25, 2012 and I'm gonna be there!
I was at his July 2019 show in Vancouver. He was lip synching it on that night SMH!
They conquered the world long before February 1964.You Americans discovered them late but, as usual, think the whole world revolves around you.
¿Cómo se puede dormir por la noche después de ser el protagonista absoluto de una cosa así?.
Le son le plus rock, so British, in Russia. Rock and Roll in Back in USSR !!!!! SO GOOD
Да здравствует Российская Империя, да здравствует золотой век
Super!!!
My heart bleeds for these poor downtrodden people as one particular audience member contemplates the return of the 'good old days ' when he will send their family members off to get blown to bits in neighbouring countries once again !! PEACE and LOVE !!! XXX
Putin at a Paul McCartney concert . Vladimir has good taste .
Rock and roll is more powerful than any arms race or nuclear weapons. Music helps the world to unite ✌✌✌✌✌
Really enjoyed this video and seeing the Russians enjoy Paul. If the Beatles had been allowed years earlier in Russia, it would have started the BRITISH INVASION THERE.
Too bad Boris Yeltsin wasn't the president. He would've showed Putin a move or two!
Lucky for Russians that the useless drunken oaf and Washington lackey Yeltsin is no longer President. They have a good one now.
@@morgenholz7937 Not really. The fact is that when Putin ascended to the Presidency in 2000, Russia was a complete basket case and heavily in debt, and he turned it all round, thus managing to rise the country up to 7th place in the international economic league table by 2007. That would suggest Putin to be a very good president, and the reason why he and his United Russia Party continually receive large majorities in elections.
@@morgenholz7937 It's the best Russia has had so far. It's a big, difficult country, and the economic hostility it receives from the West is clearly hindering further progress.
Putin is trying to figure out how to get a crowd to react to him like this.
Actually they do. You’re all so limited in what your media feeds you 🤦🏼♀️
me encanta este tema --GRANDE RUSSIA SALUDOS ---------
Fucked up Russia. 30 percent of the households don `t have running water. That is fucked up Russia today

PAUL SOS UN GENIO
Putin be like: Time to bring back the USSR
..you couldn't be more right..
He doesn’t want to bring back the USSR. Putin is quite right wing. He doesn’t want to bring back that attempted communist economic and bureaucratic systems again. But does he want to bring back the glory of the Imperial Russian days…yes. I imagine he sees himself more as a czar, then as a general secretary.
I am surprised RUclips hasn't banned this along with all the other songs and concerts on their website performed in Russia. Putin sighting in this one.
Could people in the USSR really have listened to Beattles in the 1960s? I am wondering...
+Cristal Lachesis Really don't know about The Beatles, but Queen was allowed in USSR.
Yep. It was illegal though so they did it through smuggled bootlegs.
@@coldwar45 really wasnt. My dad is russian and he has told me stories about how he had a record player and would listen to the beatles casually durring the ussr time period
In georgia(country) it was illegal but people were listening it....
they made illegal copies of the vinyls which were often done on the older x-ray films instead of the real vinyl discs, so it's been called 'music on the bones' you can look it up
no more land mines!
😍 Great!!!
Looks like fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh the irony.
I wish the guitar solo would have wailed like it did on the record.

А если мы злые сволочи пусть нес рассудит суд, А А может попробуем быть добрее, все равно все умрем, А когда настанет день, будедем уверены в том, что мы любим , и люди, и давайте дарить любить, что в настанет остальным.
