  • Serge Przedborski, MD, PhD, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NY, comments on the potential role the mitochondria play in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. Whilst mitochondria are typically associated with energy production in the human body, their regulation is often overlooked. Autophagy is necessary to maintain a healthy population of mitochondria, and alterations in their overall turnover may have a negative effect on cognitive function. Additional research is required to elucidate the mechanisms behind this phenomenon as well as druggable targets. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
