When flashing windows start first with the bottom of the windows, then the sides, and finally the top. When doing board n batten you should do all the window and door trim first and sometimes a bottom ledger trim piece then butt the Hardie board to the trim with a 8th inch expansion, contraction, joint and caulk it
I’d use that 12” cutoff siding on your soffit and use a 2” wide continuous soffit vent near the facia and then a 2-3” strip of of whatever material you choose against the facia and the vent. I’m assuming your soffit is 16” wide.
We just installed James Hardie cedar mill planks on our house. My husband and I did it ourselves. Took FOREVER, but it is finally done! The one thing I would have done differently, was put that rubber stuff at the bottom where the concrete meets the osb siding. I asked my hubby to do that before we started the siding, but he said it wasn't necessary. I complely disagree. Now, I'm thinking of removing the bottom plank on the entire perimeter of the house myself just to use the rubberized barrier😒. We don't disagree on much, but this is something I might have to tackle myself while he's at work😂 Wish me luck😂😂 You guys did a super job on your place! It's always great to save tons of money and not have to hire it out!
Yup we all make mistakes and it's easy to criticize, to be honest I think by the time you trim the windows and seal I don't think you will have a problem especially if you are thinking of building covered walkways/ porches and decking etc around that area. You both are doing a fantastic job and I am looking forward to seeing the completed house.
Thank you very much Des! You are probably right. We still have several steps left to do and it will probably be more than enough protection. Thank you for the nice comment and thank you very much for watching!
I wouldn't worry too much about the windows with the missing tape. It looks like you have a decent overhang, and I suspect you are planning on adding some trim around the windows (with lots of caulk) to keep the rain out. I'm enjoying following the build process, great job!
Looks fab guys! Each thing you add makes it look more like a home… wouldn’t want to be you caulking all those nail holes for paint though!! Maybe worth taping all the windows in one go before putting any more siding up, that way you won’t forget any more!! Keep up the great work, and enjoy the river!
Get a bug zapper and stick a chunk of meat in the middle the wasps will be drawn to it and zapp. You can also make one by building a frame with a metal grid on it and attaching a car battery to the metal. They land and zap. That's how I deal with the wasps that make ground nests. Set the box grid with the metal grid (small holes so they can't just fly out) over the hole and clip on the battery cables. Keeps kids and pets away and sit back and watch the sparks fly.
Dang from watching you all pretty much from the pour to the framing what an accomplishment you've taken the back seat to no one great job 👏 see you on the next one😁👍🙏✌oh good to see the cutie pie inspector back on the job❤
How much are those per panel? I also saw an 'this old house' video of some cedar shingle style panels of horizontal siding that is cement which is really cool!
You will be fine. Just make sure that you foam the shim space from the inside with low-expanding polyurethane (closed cell) insulation. It will provide continuity with the house wrap.

Thanks Gerard! 🐊
Have a safe weekend over there!! 😁
Are you supposed to prime or paint the cut edges, or even all edges? To prevent moister/expanded edges to occur? Thanks
We don't disagree on much, but this is something I might have to tackle myself while he's at work😂 Wish me luck😂😂
You guys did a super job on your place!
Ya'll are doing a great job and every house has a mistake in almost every room it happens to all of us.
Happens to the best of us! Hey, if you don’t make a mistake then you aren’t trying something new!
I wouldn't worry too much about the windows with the missing tape. It looks like you have a decent overhang, and I suspect you are planning on adding some trim around the windows (with lots of caulk) to keep the rain out. I'm enjoying following the build process, great job!
We sure will Marshall. 😀 Thanks for the reassurance & positivity.
Thank you! That’s a good idea Mik.
The site foreman was having nap time, that why you forgot to tape the window, lol. Great video, it really is starting to look like a home now.
That’s EXACTLY what happened. I guess that what sleeping on the job gets you. Lol thanks Mags. 😁
Big box store or the river???? Its Louisiana you know the answer to dat....now if it was river or donut shop....that is a hard one....lol
Dats right!! 🐊
Donuts on the way to get gas for the boat.. problem solved! Lol. Have a great weekend
looking lovely guys x
Thank you Jackie!
Dang from watching you all pretty much from the pour to the framing what an accomplishment you've taken the back seat to no one great job 👏 see you on the next one😁👍🙏✌oh good to see the cutie pie inspector back on the job❤
Thank you Jim!! 😄😃
We wish she wouldn’t have been sleeping on the job when it was time to tape up the windows 😂😀😬
Looks great. 😀
Thank you!!
How much are those per panel? I also saw an 'this old house' video of some cedar shingle style panels of horizontal siding that is cement which is really cool!
Around $50 a sheet. That’s really neat!
Lookin good!
Thanks!
My thoughts would be to use the scrap to build some raised garden beds and maybe a sand box for Ladly. Just a thought.
Great idea!
You will be fine. Just make sure that you foam the shim space from the inside with low-expanding polyurethane (closed cell) insulation. It will provide continuity with the house wrap.
Hey! Do you install this kind of siding?
That’s how you learn. Good job.
Love it. God is good
♥️🐊
Face masks are definitely needed when cutting that fiber cement stuff. Please use them, guys.
You guys are great.
