It's what inspired me to learn Fantaisie Impromptu. In 2016, I dared to do just that and succeeded. It was a mind blowing rise in my skill level to achieve that piece.
It wasn't so much that he "hated" the piece. He never intended for this piece to go public. In fact, it was one of his dying wishes that it be destroyed. He composed this piece around 1835 and he regretted it because he believed it sounded too much like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. He didn't want to be criticized by the public for not being original. We actually have Julian Fontana to thank for saving this work. It was Mr. Fontana who was requested to burn the score, but he held on to it and 6 years after Chopin died, he had it published. Just imagine how many masterpieces have been lost throughout history. Likely some of the most incredible music ever written has been lost in time, never to be heard again. I'm thankful for people like Julian Fontana, who saw what the composer could not and because of that, he saved a brilliant work of art. I'm sure if Chopin knew how well this piece would have been received, he would have released it himself.

I never used to listen to classical music, but one day I was studying for an exam I put some classical music on to help me focus. After studying for a couple hours I fell asleep listening to Fantasie Impromptu, and I this amazing dream about colors.I can't even describe to you how beautiful, how vibrant those colors were but it was dazzling. After that I started listening to more classical music but this piece will always hold a place in my heart because of those breathtakingly beautiful colors it evoked in my head.
What you describe about the colors actually sounds like Synesthesia; a sensation where one sense (such as hearing) triggers a response in another (in this case sight). Not going to lie, I'm a bit jealous!

His hands just glide over the keys, as if caressing. His fingers are are so calm, gently flowing over them, and yet such dynamics and tones are generated! Always loved watching pianists’ hands. Yundi’s hands are an art in themselves.
I once heard my short-term teacher play this on a regular keyboard and man, videos don't do this piece justice. You have to hear it up close and personal.
Once I went to this piano camp and I asked this girl who had been playing for 10 years (I've been playing for a little over 2) to play this. It was so horrible I almost cried.
Wish all the best for you Yundi. You have been treated unfair for so long there. Even before this time, many people insulted you and spread rumors about you just because they are jealous. You should not be treated like this. But you still work hard to promote classical music in your country even you have suffered that much. You should move to another place where people love you and respect you. You deserved to be loved. Always support you Yundi.
people who criticized him in china are asses they just love to watch someone fall into obscurity and watch someone suffer pretending to reject sexuality from surviving, while fundamentally they preached sexuality(marriage, giving birth to children, and stuffs),which made no sense at all. They are just targeting at yundi (Safe to say that ccp is targeting yundi). But to be fair though,i think yundi ruined his life himself because he basically gave up on his pianist career after he joined the actor circle. So his influence was much weaker than before and people were able to take this advantage and attack him.

I have listened to many versions of this most famously played Impromptu. What I like most about this performance is the feeling of freshness, lightness, simplicity, naturalness and zero artificiality. The rubato is so subtle and perfect. So many others over accentuated, and with needless sudden changes in tempo and dynamics, cause the attention to be drawn to the the performer. The beauty of the music became secondary to the performance.

Yundi Li playstyle is special cause he made a few notes go subtle and then strong sounds during between. While usually we would be happy enough to get the right notes at the right speed
The thing that makes this so beautiful is that at 0:30 he emphasizes the thumbs while at 0:39 he emphasizes the pinky, giving that low to high transition. Absolutely masterful, it adds such a “fantasy” feeling to the sound.
I'd also say it's because of the audio engineers too. They're really skilled. Also, compression and lower quality makes it sound more dreamy. To me, everyone else's rendition is way too crisp and not muffled enough.
I read somewhere that Chopin himself thought this piece was trash. Amazing to think that because it's such an awesome piece of music. It can bring tears in my eyes. Just shows how incredible Chopin was and how high his standards were.
It's because he thought people were going to think it was copied back from Beethoven's moonlight sonata. That's why he considered to destroy it. there are parts in this piece that are actually close or very close to Beethoven's in terms of melody.
When u compose music and hear the same melodies over and over again, eventually you get used to all the surprise and beauty. Considering it’s complexity, and the time there was before this song was released, he probably became numb to the magic of the piece.
basically the composer is only the receptor to the outer reality (samith) that which contains everything(any tangible, untangible stuffs/ideas of course he is gonna get numb because hes only the receptor
A definite Bruce Lee of the piano. Man, what a powerful and yet brilliantly crisp strokes. This man has no a single secret left about the instrument and the rest is just freely expressed feelings and emotions. I envy him, not for the fame, money and glory, but for the freedom to express himself with such ease. Bravo!

I just listened to all three immensely popular pianists (this one, rubenstien, and magaloff) play this piece. To be quite honest, while each one has their own style, the music is the same. There's not a single difference in keystroke, tone, or atmosphere throughout the piece with each of these three. All three are fantastic in their own right, and all three followed the score correctly, so what's the big deal with some people claiming this isn't the right way to play it? I don't understand how people can be so quick to judge when they're watching the video instead of listening to the music.
You have to listen really carefully. Rubinstein's version contains less rubato than this one. I'm happy with them all, but some people can complain about the little things that they notice such as that.
Curious fact: Chopin never published the Fantaisie-Impromptu. Although he did not authorise his manuscripts to be published, it was published posthumously anyway. Chopin calls parts of it "mawkish" and "without nobility''.Exploration shows that the Fantaisie-Impromptu and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata ("Quasi una fantasia") are related
There's so much emotion injected into this piece. Its really too beautiful for words to describe. My only wish is that it could be in better audio quality, because this is still the best version out there.
Ave Chopin!
There's mechanically correct playing, and there playing with the passion that defined the ushering in of the romantic Era by beethovhen and, later, Chopin, who i imagine was influenced immensely by beethoven and Yund Li captures that intense emotion.
Have I died and gone to live with the Immortals in some Heavenly Paradise? If I were to go blind, or become paralyzed, or lose my ability to speak, I would fondly spend the rest of my mortal life dreaming and floating amongst the clouds with Chopin and the Angels. Sublime! Enchanting! That such nuanced feeling, such tenderness, such longing, such vulnerability and yet such amazing power can be expressed through the keys of a single instrument, never ceases to inspire my soul and uplift my spirit, and leave my heart longing for more!

The BEST!!! It makes you want to fall in love!👍👍👍
There's so much emotion injected into this piece. Its really too beautiful for words to describe. My only wish is that it could be in better audio quality, because this is still the best version out there.
Its 12:19PM and this is still the best version on RUclips
What beautiful playing! Among the very best I've heard of this piece.
Why someone like this makes less money then most mainstream artists is beyond me! The skill this man posses on the keys is super human.
Ave Chopin!
There's mechanically correct playing, and there playing with the passion that defined the ushering in of the romantic Era by beethovhen and, later, Chopin, who i imagine was influenced immensely by beethoven and Yund Li captures that intense emotion.
I agree with you. Yundi Li is a genius ! I'm playing this piece on my channel, can you tell me your impressions ? :)
One of my all-time favorites. Makes me happy & relax. Thanks for uploading.
Here in 2021, still amazed by this interpretation
Это лучшее исполнение Шопена, из всего, что я слышала. БРАВО!
There's a reason Yundi Li became the youngest winner of the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition and we see it right here in the flesh.
It's 2040, still the best version on RUclips
Omg just said wowwwwww............flows like water..
Fantastic. This is what Chopin would have liked his precious piece to sound. Hurray for Yundi Li
