I am sorry but i did not like the Poppy War please stay safe love you and your channel love 💖 John from Australia
I didn’t personally love it either, but I think it deserves a higher rating 😄
Elliot Brooks true
I love that little pseudo mock accent you do 😂
Watch Daniel Greene! He does it all the time it's hilarious
[deleted] Oh I do! These two are my favourite booktubers haha
@@shailejanarain Oh haha great!
I think The Lunar Chronicles is underrated. I am obsessed with it and ALTHOUGH IT IS WIDELY KNOWN AND HAS BEEN READ BY EVERYONE, it is extremely overshadowed in terms of longevity by authors such as Sarah J Maas or Cassandra Clare, etc.
Super agree! I loved those books and am shocked they're lost in the sea of fairy tale retellings, because I read a ton of them and to this day they're still the most unique and fun ones I've read. I've been wanting to reread them, really enjoyed the characters and universe.
@@CrystalDennisMusic Perfect way to describe my thoughts: "lost at sea"
A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World. I'll never stop mentioning this book because it's at the very least under-mentioned. Hardly anyone on booktube seems to even know it exists. And it did get a 5 star review from Sebastien de Castell.
The Demon Race by Alexandria Warwick is also a fun read.
I saw it yesterday at the bookstore and I was intrigued by the title!! I’ll totally check it out! ❤️
I actually love boring character driven books. The Queens of Innis Lear and The Thief sound awesome! And I've just bought the Poppy War. Thanks for the recommendations.
oh how I LOVE these videos- and it's always a joy to hear you talking about your love for Kingdom of Back
I love your eyeshadow look in this one!😍
Thanks for the shout out! I'm hoping to actually put up the History of the Poppy War vid soon!
It will always been Greatcoats, Senlin, and Long Price Quartet as my underrated reads (though I know Traitor's Blade is not your favorite) 😛
Christina is nearly done with Kingdom of Back and is really liking it. I also picked up The Thief now; it sounds really funny and the guy's name is Eugenides.
I love how your channel has become a go-to for adding to my TBR.😅❤️
Ah, that’s awesome :D
I didn’t love The Poppy War quite as much as Allen did (I did like it a lot!), but I agree that his review is fantastic and would recommend it to anyone interested in the book. These other books I need to check out - thanks! My pick for an underrated book, or at least one that deserves more attention: Ursula Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea.
I tried Earthsea a long time ago and just couldn’t get into it, but I might need to give it another go 😄
Elliot Brooks It’s funny that it was originally billed as a children’s story. Many of my college students struggle with staying engaged in it. I think it’s partly because the first book especially is almost like a folktale in its spareness. I know you like character driven stories, and the characters are on the flat side, so that could be an issue. But I have a hard time thinking of a book that better handles the theme of accepting mortality.
Another fun video, so glad I popped on here right when I woke up so I can start my day off right! 👏😊
Yay for Poppy War!!!! And yay for Allen’s review of it which was fantastic!!!!
Totally need to read all the others on this list 😍❤️
I have to say, I love your videos. All the emotions, good, bad, funny, cute. Keep it up!
I’m so happy you mentioned Wicked Fox!! 😭😭 I still gotta read the sequel tbh
Which pairing has more chemistry? Miyoung and Jihoon or Somin and Junu? I'm going to read Gumiho soon :D
I picked up house of dragons after your recommendation and I'm glad I did got hooked quick and really enjoyed the story. I think I might try out the poppy war next, I really want to get rhythm of war but unfortunately paperback probably won't come out for anther year after it's released. 😕 But love your videos.
I am super excited to read house on dragons. I've had a few friends read it recently and love it as well.
I really love the little voices you make 😂😍♥️
WOW... I always admired the cover of The Kingdom of Back but have never watched a review or rec on it. THIS sounds so brilliant! I'm pretty fussy when it comes to musical elements in fiction, sometimes it's obvious to me the author is not a musician or hasn't been able to transfer the experience into the story. But knowing you have a musical background, I trust your opinion re: this book. Can't wait to read it! Also I'm going to give Poppy War a 2nd chance,i got through 70% and had to to take a break ... I know it's based on historical events and so it's important to depict the violence... But WHOA the violence is pretty intense, quite confronting! However, the Fantasy element provides a degree of suspended belief so easier to digest for me. Hopefully I can take a breath and finish it! 😅❤️ Cheers!
I am currently reading Kingdom of Bach because of your recommendation!
I actually didn’t kow what The Kingdom of Back was about. Sounds super cool. I enjoyed her Warcross duology well enough and still need to read Legend 💕 I own Cluess’ Kingdom of Fire trilogy because of booktuber recommendations. Can’t wait to read it!
I want to read the other books by Cluess now for sure :D and I haven’t read any other Lu yet, but I’m hoping to soon 😄
Also for Queens of Innis Lear the sequel/companion novel is super actiony and ploty and GREAT
So many books I want to pick up are on this list! I think House of Dragons is higher up on the list, but Kingdom of Back and The Thief also have high priority. I love the description of The Thief hahaha. I am currently reading something that might belong on this list: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan, it's so good and quirky. Picture a memoir of a 1800s naturalist (scientist) woman that specializes in DRAGONS in a fantasy setting (not Earth).
Yeah, I know of that one, and it definitely has a lower average rating!
I love how the atrocities of war was depicted and developed in the war story of Poppy War. It may not be entertaining to some but at least the graphic incidents border on trauma-inducing and horrifying. 🤓
I love the Snow Walker trilogy by Catherine Fisher. I've read it first as a child and then again at 28, and I just think it is such a shame that it has totally disappeared from view. It has this really cold Nordic setting with a lot of lore that revolves around an evil snow witch and her son. She can, amongst other things, steal souls and torments this group of people, while her son (who is half human and grew up in exile) tries to help and protect the humans against his mother, even though many fear him, too. It is just a very atmospheric, quick, fun read.
The more I hear about Kingdom of Back the more I want to pick it up it just sounds so good 💖 I love books that make me cry lol I try to be strong but MAN! some just hit hard. Btw that Queen Innis Lear cover is gorgeous!
Mozart’s sister by Rita chobinnier. Sorry that I couldn’t spell her last name. It can seem slow paced at times, but it always makes you want to read more when you put the book down.
The Thief!
The first book maybe just okay, but the second and the third books in the series is just amazing.
And Eugenides? Oh boy, what a main character!
Can't wait to check out the poppy war!
The black witch chronicles is such an underrated series that no booktubers ever talk about.
I'm currently 70% through the Poppy War and absolutely loving it, so I'm as surprised as you are that it doesn't have a higher rating. I'm very curious what you'll think about the next book in the Thief series, The Queen of Attolia. I found the Thief rather average but the story was meant to pick up with the 2nd book so I read on. I think it may have been one of the most disappointing fantasy reads ever for me, specifically due to one ridiculously handled element that I won't mention because I don't want to spoil it for you, but it made me drop the series and forget everything that happened in both books except that one awful plot point haha.
I consider Kendare Blake a thoroughly underrated author - I think both her Anna Dressed in Blood duology and the Three Dark Crowns series should be rated higher. I love how unique and original her ideas are and she's fantastic at crafting spooky and palpable atmosphere in her books.
I feel this way about the Spellslinger series by Sebastien de Castell. It's not Sanderson level good, but it's pretty solid. No one ever talks about it. I think it's well loved by the few who have read it, but it deserves better.
Earthsinger Chronicles by L. Penelope.
It's also that not a lot of people have read them, and I think more people should. It's a really fantastic Adult Fantasy series.
I feel that way about Guy Gavriel Kay 's The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy and The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey
Reincarnation Blues by Poore and All Our Wrong Todays by Masari were both 5 stars for me....and I NEVER hear anyone talking about these! They are crazy adventures...but I highly recommend those two.
Do you have any other recommendations for books that are a lot like The Queen of Innis Lear and The Thief? The slow and boring are my favorite books to read 😂
Please, also take a look at The Child Garden by Geoff Ryman. It is about Milena.
Starting off with the poppy war omg YES
Even as someone who didn’t absolutely love the book, I still think it’s better than a lot of other adult fantasy 😆
Ooooh underrated books... the entire romance genre? 😆 For fantasy, mine has always been “The Queen’s Thief “ series by Megan Whalen Turner. My favorite series of all time to be honest. It’s written differently from anything else I’ve ever read, and it’s just so clever.
The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith. It’s so epic and it sticks with you (especially that ending)! More people need to know R. Lee Smith. Everything in her writing has a purpose even if it is over 1k pages.
The House of the Scorpion I feel is an underrated book. I loved it but still forget it's on my shelf all the time, and it even has a sequel I keep forgetting to buy!
I think The Archived and The Unbound by VE Schwab deserves a higher rating just because it’s one of the few YA books that I’ve read that includes romance in the story WHERE THEY GUY IS ACTUALLY NICE and not a jerk to the girl. I just think it’s so appropriate/ relatable for teenagers.
Hi Elliot. Not sure if I should mention books published back in the 80s also I've mentioned them a couple of times before but I'm always amazed the Saga of the Pliocene exiles by Julian May and the following series the Galactic Milieu aren't more widely know . It's like no booktuber has ever heard of them nowadays. They're quite simply one of the most intelligent and thoughtful reads in fantasy/sci fi. Both massively character driven and constantly evolving plot. As a booktuber it might get a little tiresome receiving tons of books from fans so I'll try and restrain myself. I am a little tempted to send them Sean and see what he thinks ☺. Have a great day you guys . It's raining here in England again. Ps Maybe I just live in the past a little too much. Will have to get my Star Sign changed by deed poll. 😔
Wicked Fox is nothing short of phenomenal! I'm really not into YA but this book truly changed how I perceive books in this genre. I absolutely loved it.
Just read The Thief, I freaking loved it and immediately bought the entire series! The writing is amazing!
I looked the kingdom of back. I read it early this year.
Oh, look. You said the Thief. And you just read it recently. I’m so happy that you already feel this way. 😆
Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore (author of Graceling) has a pretty terrible star rating on Goodreads (3.38), but I loved it! I think it's because the book has an atypical format. The main character gets invited by an old aquaintance to an fancy/weird island mansion and we see her make five different choices, which lead to five different timelines, and each timeline ends up being a different genre. I thought it was great, and I thought the style of story was really interesting! But a lot of people definitely didn't feel the same.
The Kingdom of Back definitely deserves more love! It was such a great book!
I would have to say The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. I thought it was SO good
It was indeed AMAZING,couldn't put it down as i wanted to know what will happen...Audiobook is great as well
Please read the Soul Eaters Trilogy by Eliza Crewe. It's YA but it's very underrated.
Ooo, I actually was someone who didn’t enjoy Wicked Fox. I found I didn’t like the prose at all and I would get so bored while reading it that I would get confused when things happened (such as when characters entered and exited scenes). I think the pacing, plot, and romance could have been a lot better. It was just a cool concept, bad execution experience for me ):
I think it's interesting you always say queens of Innis Lear is "boring" (and also drives me kinda nuts because I loved it from page 1 lol) because it wasn't? Just because a book doesn't have a ton of action and stuff doesn't mean it's boring, and the family dynamics and world setup and conflict were really well done. It plays out like Shakespeare with a fantasy twist and I really like that because I mean, it's Shakespeare with a fantasy twist. It's like saying Romeo and Juliet is boring because "not much happens" when the core of the conflict isn't action, it's character dynamics and two families at war, and the people caught in the middle of it. I just think maybe boring isn't the right term to use, slow paced is. People who like soap operas and something that really wants to dissect the characters would love it.
The Black Witch is really beautiful
I liked The Poppy War, but I felt like it was all over the place in terms of plot and pacing. It felt like a YA magical school and an adult fantasy book set during a war kind of Frankenbooked together. The break between the two halves was very abrupt and jarring. I also found both Rin and Altan to be completely and utterly unlikable.
Actually underrated books that no one ever talks about on Booktube :
- Midnight at the Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson
- The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima
- The Mirror Visitor by Christelle Dabos
Haven't read the other 2 series but the Seven Realms series is one of my all time faves. I really need to reread them, it's been a few years! Thanks for the reminder ♡
I had started reading the Seven Realms trilogy via the Libby/Overdrive app. I would've loved to continue, but my library currently only has the digital license for books 1, 3 and 4
I absolutely LOVE the Seven Realm series so I’m gonna trust your recs! Lmao adding them to my tbr ✨
I definitely really enjoyed Seven Realms! Those all have pretty good ratings though, right?
@@ebnovels True, I just never see anyone talk about them so I guess they are more unknown than underrated haha
I loved The Poppy War!! I just finished it and I'm a little wrecked.
The Black Witch Chronicles and The Medoran Chronicles are both Y.A. underrated series ☺️
the medoran chronicles is the best fantasy series i've read and i feel like no one else even knows they exist 😭
I have been eyeing the The Black Witch book every time I go into my local bookstore. It looks so good, but I don't want to buy anymore physical books whilst in a process of packing house xD
I need poppy war and I need it now
I really liked The Poppy War but understand complaints about pacing and tone. Still, amazing that it's a debut novel. I also feel that, if readers like it enough to try the sequel, The Dragon Republic is a superior book that blows The Poppy War out of the water.
I loved House of Dragons so much. I was surprised by how much character depth there is in it.
The most underrated series I've read is the Everneath trilogy! I love it SO MUCH but I have never seen anyone talk about it 😪
Literally anything by Jeff Wheeler. I've never read through series as fast as I have with his works, stunning world building and a deep connection and empathy to the characters!
Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is definitely an underrated series♡
Have a great weekend!! 😊📖
My OCD cant handle the fact youre missing Wrath by John Gwynne on your shelf.
The Sisters of the Winter Wood deserves so much more love. It's on that line between fantasy and magical realism, but it uses them to talk about anti-semitism and the pograms. It has two points of view(sisters) and the younger sister's chapters are written in prose. It's really quite beautifully written and ends with a real historical event in Moldova.
A nine-tailed fox? Hmm :) I know a protagonist of a certain manga (and anime) that has a similar condition. I wonder how many people picked up on that.
Can you do a video on books that you read that are so good that you wish you had written them
Haha, that’s a really fun idea, but I think that list would basically end up being my favorite books :D
oh my god the kingdom of back sounds AMAZING
Good video.
Trylle trilogy by Amanda Hocking is too underrated
Ninth House!
Haha, I’m very much disliking Ninth House 😆
ERAGON
The poppy war is low because of the pacing and the fact it’s like 2 different books smashed together, the 2 parts are very different and that throws a lot of people based on the reviews I’ve seen
White sand graphic novel deserve better ratings for sure..
I agree that The Thief was entertaining, but GIRL. Save yourself. The second book was so bad that it took all my willpower to try the third book. The third and 4th books were alright, but wow that second book is a STRUGGLE to get through.
If anything I would say Poppy War is a bit overrated. The general beats of the story are great, especially the representation, and the themes are well-executed, but Kuang’s writing isn’t that great imo and the worldbuilding feels a bit underdeveloped and sloppy at times. I don’t think the series is quite worthy of the pretty rabid fanbase it’s accrued. Still looking forward to The Burning God though!
I think it’s significantly better than a lot of other adult fantasy 😅 But I still didn’t personally love it overall!
Ha, I can’t really argue with that. It is still great, I’d give the series like a 7.5/10 personally (TPW 7/10, TDR 8/10).
@Lakacia Lloyd You’re right, that’s an oversight on my part. I guess what I meant was representation within the scope of the historically male-dominated and Eurocentric fantasy genre, not within the story itself. I’ll make a note to be more careful how I talk about this in the future. Thank you for pointing this out!
Small nitpick: ‘Points of view’; not ‘Point of views’ 😉
People need to quit with the poppy war. Great time period. Great cultural setting. Good maybe first 1/3 of a book. The rest is a mess.
Soooo we getting an overrated books list too? right? :)
The kingdom of back was underwhelming and boring for me...
Sorry you felt that way!
@@ebnovels but I'm still gonna keep it because the cover is awesome!!!
It's very weird that american people only reads american novels. Boring.
