I run a ported 400c daily as a work saw and it’s the nicest saw I’ve run in 20 years. They’re just F’n awesome saws. Over a year of service and I’ve never had to repair it. Just maintenance and good fuel.
I've got a 400 set up exactly the same. After a couple months I put West Coast dogs, air filter and bark box on it. It runs like a hot ported saw now! I think the 400 is the perfect medium saw. I just ordered a 362 wrap handle for it too.
Doug I have the 400c and it’s the smoothest running saw I have ever had in my hands. My only complaint was the original bar just like Mike said, had it a little off balance. I put a light bar on mine and actually with the help of Mike from KNL he found me some chains and it totally balanced the saw out with the light bar! I would recommend this saw to anyone!!👍🏻👍🏻 TOA
Thanks for this. See I have a 362cm and it runs and is built so well, but I cut with it and I’m pretty let down. The 400 is on a completely different level! Stihl should have made the newest 362 more like the 400, but nope😒
While I am partial to the producer of this series and the featured product...this was a very professional review of the saw and an interview of a real-world working man. Very well done from both gentlemen...
Hi Doug!!😀😀 Nice seeing you over at KNL!! Mike is a really great guy!! Next time he comes to Wisconsin I'm going to try to get together with him . Him and I have some of the same friends in my area. The 400 is a really nice saw . If I were doing more hand cutting. I would definitely consider buying one of them. Take care my friend!!😀😀👍👍 Logger Al
Hey killanger I ordered the ms400c today. With a 24 inch bar. I just got back from the Amish Stihl dealership. Someone had just bought the 400c that they had in stock. I put my name on the list I was the only one. So now it's a waiting game till the saw comes in.
Pretty sure the 400 is optimized to run on the 25” Light bar or the 20” Regular. In my area the Light bars are hard to come by, dealer was going to give me 25” Regular but I opted for 20” Regular since they had no Lights in stock. No regrets, this saw absolutely rips on 20” regular with great balance. Love this chainsaw, be safe y’all
I have the same saw this is year 2. I run a 20” roller tip hard nose bar full house chain. Love the saw and it is the best Stihl I have ever owned and my first one was a 1967 o41 AV super. The shirt bar works great for what I call plunge cutting on hard learners. Power to weight factor and still built in Germany completely adds to this saw. Be safe and be careful
I agree with you on picking the 400c over the 5oo i. I have both. 500 wears a guy out more than 400 on a long day. Just depends on what I'm doing abd how big the wood. 400 every time if I can. My go to saw.
I've had a ms441c for ten years and being the only mtronic saw I've ever used I never gave the winter summer shutter a 2nd thought until I saw a guy on RUclips flip the switch. I finally looked at mine and it's been in winter mode for 10 years 🙄. Its a wonder I havent burned it up milling in july and August.
Little update. My ms441cm was on a shelf in my basement and we had a flash flood. The saw got ruined because our power was out and it sat underwater for more than a few days. I did clean it up and it restarted, but it's got problems. It served me well for almost 12 years. I'm picking up a ms400c which is the same horsepower and much much lighter than my 441 was. I'm 49 now and still cutting all my own firewood wherever I can find it,so I'm sure I'll appreciate a saw that's lighter
I haven’t run a 400 yet but the 462 is one of my favorite stihl I ever have run can’t say it’s better or worst then the 400 obviously but I can say you won’t be disappointed if you go that route. I’m not necessarily even a stihl guy and I love that saw.
Wow, that says a lot about that 400 Doug, I really value people's opinions because my main criteria for a saw is user experience. Both the 400 and 462 are enough saw for what I need, but its about what I'll enjoy running more. I wish a dealer around me had a demo day where I could try both side by side.
I’ve wanted a 400 for a while. I’ve held one, and man is it light. I know westcoastsaw makes a foam filter for it, I’d prolly add that to it.. someday.
Fabulous review Mike and Indiana Doug, have my “ 400 “ with 20in. light B&C, She is the most beautiful, smoothest Chainsaw I EVER KNEW, love your channel “ I D “ just subscribed, !!! Greetings from Ireland ❤
I honestly am not a fan and I’ll tell you why. They’re not necessarily a one size fits all container. And even if they were, the chain must stack on top of each other. If you go to retrieve the one you need and it’s on the bottom, you have to remove all the chain to get to it.
When you want a 500 I but can’t get one or afford to spend almost 2 k for a saw when you don’t use it daily personally I love my 500 I and my 261 cm best combo in the world for all east coast wood
Anyone looking for a 400, if you are in eastern ohio/ western WV area, Bridgeport equipment always has at least one in stock. That’s where I got mine. They had 2 new on the shelf yesterday at the barboursville WV location
G'day Indi, how the bloody hell are ya ? The 500 I is 1.3 pounds heavier than the 400C and if you're hanging onto it all day everyday and you don't need that little bit more power of the 500 you'd be silly to use it. I have a 400C max bar length in Oz is 20 inches I fitted the dogs on the bar cover for even pull, Stihl says to leave it in summer mode all year round here. If I'm cutting firewood I take the 400 for limbs and the 660 Mag for the rest , if it gets any bigger I'll use the 880 Magnum 👍.
If u find someone with a efco 6510 u need try it its on heavey side though not quite half lb less than my redmax 7100/Husqvarna 372xt I'm in Texas so ya too far for u to try my efco 6510 out
@@PhilHewkin yup, best solution to that is to either keep another saw or at least an extra bar and chain. If you're yanking on your saw you're gonna either tear up your av mounts or break something else. Felling wedges are great for preventing bars from gettin pinched too
@@IndianaDoug yea the handle bar on it is plastic. If you buy the 462 or bigger they come with a aluminum/steel wrap handle on them. I think every pro saw should come with that especially when a 400C cost over $1,000
@@KAMP8505the plastic holds up just as well as a hollow aluminum tube does. If it does get broken it's not expensive to fix. The rear handles are plastic, the top shrouds are plastic, fuel tanks are plastic, the starter covers are usually plastic. It's well made and serves its purpose well
I appreciate ya Rick👍🏻 ya know, I tried resetting the 362 but I couldn’t tell a difference in performance. Then I heard there were different ways to do the reset. Stihl is the brand I’m least familiar with in the chainsaw world.

Awesome 👊 I sold my 362 when this came out but still undecided between the 400 and 462🤷♂️ . Nice saw👍

I belive that is an m-tronic saw. That is why the switch is different. It is the same with my ms362 m-tronic.
