@@Jan.jan2024 It is a common misbelief that the magyarization policies were too harsh between 1867 and 1918. First of all, between 1711 and 1867 all Habsburg policies were against Hungarians (the emperors and the local governors did not let Hungarians moving to much of the empty territories after taking the middle of the country back from the Ottoman Empire (result: Hungarians became a minority in many parts of Transylvania, Temesi Bánság, Vajdaság where they were majority before, and at some places even after, the Ottoman occupation). Once Hungary regained control over its land (1867) the leaders obviously wanted to have more Hungarians at those parts of the country that were severely de-magyarized by the turks and the Habsburgs. This resulted in magyarization policies such as: people working in government and local government offices had to speak Hungarian and make their last names sound Hungarian (some of my Slovak ancestors had to do this). However using other languages were not banned, e.g. in churches and everyday life other languages were widely spoken and acepted and at most places children were able to learn in their own language in schools. I know that in some cases the government closed schools, but this was not a wide-scale practice. Example: my ancestors in Nograd County were able to keep their Slovak heritage throughout the whole period, even if their villages were circled by Hungarian settlements. (Side note: my mother did not speak any Hungarian until 1963 and that was normal for children her age at that time. She and my grandparents became Hungarians due the industrialization and communist policies between 1949-1989, this also proves that the magyarization policies in dualism were quite unsuccesful). Another good example is that the number of Slovakians, Romanians, Serbians, etc has increased even if these "policies" were in place (I know that the proportion of Hungarians increased quicker which might indicate a successful assimilation but I think that we can't ignore that fact that many Slovakians, Serbians and others relocated to the US at the same period (the ratio of people moving to the US were higher than for the Hungarians). So all in all, despite or maybe as a result of these policies the ethnic minorities were able to become even stronger than before. (sidenote: the policies Hungary copied were applied in France, and UK before, but their pace of carrying them out were quicker and more successful as there are no ethnic minorities recognized at France today and the UK managed to create an identitiy (British) which can unite the people from all over the island.)

Shouldn’t “Worst ending” be just staying a part of Hungary?
