    Bots in games are some of the most fascinating things. Many games have subpar bots that are only slightly more skilled than a new player, or in the case of strategy games, the AI just gets insane bonuses on higher difficulties instead of being smarter. The trick in many games is to make bots human like. A bot that can hardly play the game isn't hard nor is making a bot that easily beats all humans (As the bot masses of TF2 indicate). But neither of those are good. A bot needs to be able to provide challenge while avoiding it becoming unstoppable machine. It needs to understand the basics of strategy, while not being overly predictable as it follows it's rules. I hope one day to see bots that pass a video game Turing test, assuming it doesn't lead to a dystopian sci fi world.

      "or in the case of strategy games, the AI just gets insane bonuses on higher difficulties instead of being smarter"
      And that is why I love Civ and Total War games and still get easily bored with usually a single campaing. The begging is pretty hardy on higher difficulties, as one would expect, but if I get to mid-late game alive it gets easy as hell, because the AI still dumb as fuck.

    As soon as I heard 2042 was going to have bot support, I knew you'd be all over it. But Mr. Phillip might I also recommend Insurgency Sandstorm for your bot enjoyment. That game has a whole section of the community who only plays the PvE/Bot modes. It's quite fun and the devs sometimes add silly Bot modes(exploding bots, knife only bots etc). Great fun.

    I think I already said it under another one of your videos about bots but when I was younger I used to play a lot on empty servers in BF3 because I was frustrated that online matches didn't allow me to sneak around like James Bond and take people down with a silenced pistol or whatever other RP thing I wanted to do, so I played on empty servers instead and killed tons of imaginary villains in many creative ways, saving the world on many occasions. Limiting gameplay to competitive multiplayer in an otherwise very open / sandbox-y game tends to kill tons of possibilities and mechanics that are already there, waiting to be explored, simply because they aren't optimal for winning the match.

    I remember playing Battlefield 2 with 4 friends in my tiny room. They all brought their laptops and pcs and we used the mod that you mentioned in this video to bump up the bot amount and use bigger maps.
    We only had one game disc though and (like you said) the mod made the game crash every 30 minutes or so on somebody's pc. So we all had to restart the game and the mod and that meant, taking turns on using the single BF2 disc we had to boot it up. Good times.
    When it worked though, this was one of the best Battlefield experiences I ever had. I remember getting into the heli in the middle of the map "Zatar Wetlands", flying straight up into the air and seeing an army of bots spread out in front of me, running across the open field towards the hill. It looked like a movie to me but we were the protagonists.
    Thanks for bringing this memory back Philip!

    As an Aussie its the norm for most multiplayer games to have empty regional servers or extreme lag on overseas servers. I've started playing Enlisted for the bot squads you can switch between. This new Battlefield will hopefully have both local servers, a decent playerbase, and bots to reduce waiting times

    • @XKCDism
      @XKCDism 3 года назад +8

      100% this, when ever I see a game that is multiplayer only or battle-royal, I just lose complete interest, not because I dislike multiplayer or BR, but because I know in under a week maybe a moth all the aussie servers will be dead and thus the game will be left with only SP options, so if it doesn't have bots or a compelling way to play single player.

    • @XKCDism
      @XKCDism 3 года назад +3

       @Sol the Gamer fair I am being hyperbolic, not all games die so quick as few weeks, but Mordhau is very popular and relatively new at three years old.
      compare that to the lack of any rush servers in BF1, the game advertises heaps of game modes but the only populated servers are all conquest and that's on PC.
      the poor buggers on console don't even have that: ruclips.net/video/dZnjOtiPM7Q/видео.html
      And the great tragedy of Battlefield: bad company 2 where there are no populated servers and at this point its a dead game in this region.
      same with call of duty black ops 1. the difference is black ops has bots so you can still play it.
      and bots would solve a lot of the situations I just described. for at least some people.

    I'm just looking for the next generation of bots that uses machine learning to generate a realistic simulation of player behaviour based OH YOU'RE LITERALLY TALKING ABOUT IT IN THE VIDEO RIGHT NOW YES oh but you only talked about it for 20 seconds. as I was saying I'm really looking forward to the day where bots really look human. the key advantage would be that ideally they would display emergent behaviours that would be expressed in all sorts of ways, like you might have a bot that seems to be making its own decisions, even though it would just be imitations of behaviours learned in training data. I'm looking forward to the day where I can team up with bots to achieve complex tasks, not just binary "go here" tasks.

    Well said! Bots deserve some love.
    I have amazing memories facing armies of them with a friend. After some time, we would actually see bots kind of as 'real people'. Because we played against them over and over again, we started to give them personalities and traits - a mechanism that don't happen much against real players, because you rarely play with them more than a couple of hours in a row before you or they leave the server.
    In a way, there can be more feelings in a bot game than in an online game -if you see what I mean.

    i understand the sentiment, and have spent countless hours in several games playing with and against bots myself, and am fond of those times. i'm happy about the news about BF 2042. Yet over the years, the predictability of those matches regardless of difficulty selected, made them feel stale. actually managing a flank on an outpost, sneaking up behind alert, thinking players and having one of those "hero" moments in an actual multiplayer match feels infinitely more rewarding, albeit of course much, much rarer. i haven't looked back since overcoming the initial anxiety and stress of an actual online match. it's easy for the average player to get distracted by content found online, crazy trailers and compilations of killstreaks and stuff and ending up frustrated when their average game doesn't feature moments like that. but on the rare occasion it does, it's exhilarating. No bot match can come close.
    still, of course, the bots being available is a very good thing.

    Seeing bots be advertised as a feature in both Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 makes me so damn excited, especially since both are planning on using bots to fill in vacant spots in a match/server. With Halo Infinite, it's also a damn near necessity because it's one of the few remaining Arena-style shooters left on the market and bots make it easier for anyone to join on top of Infinite's MP already being F2P.
    And with Battlefield 2042, it means that I get to have another game where I can just unwind and act out fun fantasies or just do stupid fun stuff like trying to not fire a single bullet.
    I really hope that both of them doing this means that more and more games start including bots, even basic ones, for the sake of those of us who prefer PvE over PvP.

Because then you were the hero, you felt great all the time, but nonetheless you had always the thrill your enemy could be a real player. I stopped playing battlefield when bot support was gone. same. I mainly play games as a way to wind-down and chill, take a break and check out from reality. Ever since I was little I've played games like the original Battlefront I & II, which was all bots, and that was my way of decompressing from the stresses of school and stuff. But now a-days, you can't have fun/chill experiences in games because everyone is being such a-holes. I could play a game like Fortnite for literally 2 hours, not win a single match, get maybe 5-10 kills total, get danced on by toxic toddlers, and probably hate being alive even more than I did before. To me, that's not fun. Gaming to me was always an introverted escape and a way to relax, but modern gaming is not relaxing when real life people are trying their hardest to ruin your day for their own personal gain. I just want to play a chill match against bots that fight fair, I don't care about competition or ranking up or leaderboards, I'm just trying to have a good time. Bots are ALWAYS a fun time, and the fact that they allow games with small player-basses to survive long-term, it's a no-brainer. Having bots as an option to play against in PRIVATE lobbies can only improve the games their in, and it doesn't take away from those who want to crush the souls of their neighbors in Multiplayer. We can have both. Bots all the way.

    3:29 This is one of the most reasonable things I've ever heard about games. Not even kidding! I think the same. Games are supposed to be fun, to cool down the stress we already won from the day, not another stressful experience to the point make some people straight up, curse/scream, break things up, make the game/community toxic. And not gonna lie, I already did some of that stuff when I raged in a game! Like break things and curse/scream. That is why I prefer off-line/pve games, to have fun, instead of compete to see if I'm better than someone else, for me, that is one of the most selfish feelings someone could have while playing a game. You don't need to be better than someone, you don't need to get mad when someone is better than you. But games nowadays tries as hard as they can to show you that you are, somewhat, "inferior" to the other, just because you lost. I do understand that people like these kind of competition and think it is fun! And I don't want to take that away from them, no! But I do appreciate when a game doesn't force us to play like our (REAL) lives depends on it.
    You know what? I do like Rising Storm 2 for example, I like Hell Let Loose, and even though they have some issues, those games are not focused on competition, they are not focused to see "who is the best", you? Or that random dude with anime pic on their emblem/profile (sorry, no hate if you do that, just a little joke!) ? These games are focused in cooperation, to help your team, and you can see that in those cases it even makes pvp enjoyable to players who like offline/pve games as well!
    Ofc... If you play on daily basis ANY game can be stressfull. For example? Play Gta V EVERY SINGLE DAY, you will start to find things to complain, like bugs, stutterings, failing some missions. Even on RS2 or HLL I found things to complain! So moderation is the key to ANY game, pvp or pve!
    So with that being said, it's very good and helpful when the DEVs add a real pve mode (not like those temporary events), for their games, so people can switch from mode to mode.

  • @constitution7167
    @constitution7167 3 года назад +2

    I honestly couldn't agree more. I'm a pretty skilled player, not the best, but I still prefer bots every day of the week over versing other players. I played the hell out of the battlefield and COD campaigns because it had bots and therefore I could enjoy the game in ways the video listed that you just can't do as much in PVP. I've been playing Rainbow 6: Siege for a little while and have racked up around 600 hours on it, half of which have been in PVP and the other half have been on my own in Training Grounds. (The player vs bot game mode) I'm a really good player at this game but it's so much more fun when I can fight 30 bots at once that absolutely suck than 5 v 5 players, exchanging kills between the 10 of us.
    I have over 80 hrs on CS:GO and CS: Source combined but not once have I gone into a lobby with other players. That's just how much I enjoy fighting bots. The reason I mention Source is that I enjoy it more than the refined and cleaner CS:GO because it lets you customize the match and the bots a bit more. You can choose how many are on your team and the enemy team as well as the match time and what type of guns they use. This is something I believe is VERY important for games with bots, when you play with bots you're almost certainly either by yourself or a small group of friends and therefore have agreed that some rules or limitations should be implemented like the skill level of the bots, the number of bots, the stuff they can use and so on. I hope there is an option for this type of stuff in the new Battlefield but just the fact that there will be bot lobbies alone for players is amazing.

    I'm amazed to hear that, i remember spending soo much time playing against bots in BF:Vietnam, 1942 and BF2 on my shitty old PC, those games were soooo damn nice.
    I just really love bots in games cause they let me enjoy the game a lot more casually, i agree with you a lot on this video for that reason, it's not that i hate online games but majority of them are too sweaty for my usually casual mood.
    There are many reasons for me to love it, starting with how I can play in any way that I want without having the issue of facing against some guy who plays the same game all day, using the best guns and best loadouts to destroy everybody's fun as they sweat hard in a random ass game.
    There's also the big reason you mentioned, if the game has no players, you simply can't play the game to the fullest, i don't know how large the bot support will be for the game but I'd imagine it'll be considerably large, I can see this being amazing for casuals, like people who just don't wanna play "that map" which every other player wants to play 24/7.
    Not to mention with bots, you can avoid those toxic kids who will shout at you on mic or type slurs on in-game chat if you take the plane but don't do so well with it because you're experimenting.
    Overall great news and i hope it'll be good and something they continue to do, pretty cool to hear that I'm not so alone in being quite happy about bots in Battlefield.

    I feel like multiplayer games have a weakness, its that it doesnt satisfy everyone, as one team wins and the other loses, and let me tell you its mostly not fun to lose, especially when you die so many times and are out of the action for balancing purposes for some time. But against bots, everyone gets happy as they win and have more action as they die less, and almost always win vs bots, while the losing team is composed of bots, so it doesnt matter, and it feels like a better time than in multiplayer. And this is a good thing no matter how skilled you are at the game, as you can up the difficulty to make it more challenging.
    About balance, it really doesnt have to exist vs bots, as it only matters if the enemies are fair, so you can get lower death times or none at all, have more fun stuff that would be broken in multiplayer, anything that gives more fun can be enabled.
    I just hope that future games take this into account, as i think coop/singleplayer vs ai games are the best games you can make in terms of fun.

      I disagree personally, all games I've played against bots are boring stompfests. War thunder and enlisted come to mind, very different games, one being a tank sim and one being an FPS. In both these games playing against bots is beyond easy and just makes me bored, you don't have to employ any skill or strategy to win and it ruins atmosphere. pvp Is fun for me because you don't always smash the other team, that desperate defense on the final objective on BF1, knowing your gonna lose but determined to take down as many enemies as you can is a thrilling experience, much more thrilling than mindlessly stomping the enemy team and constantly winning. I hope bots don't interfere too much with multiplayer and remove any semblance of difficulty and strategy. An option to disable bots would be good imo, fair play if you wanna just play PVE but I don't and don't want it to interfere with my games.

    Bot lobbies are going to slap harder than a russian. I play Call of Duty for frags and going after killstreaks, Battlefield is about spectacle to me. Being able to load up 127 bots and create fake battles and play around with ai will be so fun. Now all I need is the main theme to drop for the game, the snippet in the trailer sounds really good.

    The theme of Battlefield 1942 never gets old. The game that made me interested in the Pacific War, of which I knew nothing of as a little frenchman (only Pearl Harbor, Iroshima and Nagasaki) and made me discover my second most favorite aircraft : the Douglas SBD Dauntless. I can't remember how many hours I played on Midway, Wake Island and Iwo Jima. There was also a really cool mod called "Desert Combat" which turned the game in the Gulf War, where I found my most favorite aircraft, the A-10. Those memories...

    Wonderful! I actually made a comment about exactly this. I said it was fine that the game didn't have a singleplayer CAMPAIGN, but there had to be a singleplayer option through the use of bots. Glad to see they went that route! Man, so far it feels like they're getting everything right.

    There were a couple of medal of honor PSP games, and both of them had a reasonable level of bot support which allowed me to continue enjoying multiplayer long after the official online network for them was shut down. It was during a time where I was unable to use my PC as I was stuck in bed or in hospital constantly, so I really appreciated being able to just chill and have a fun time trying to beat my records for most kills without dying, or most kills with a bad weapon. Such an obscure game that didnt really HAVE to have multiplayer, but it did and im immensely grateful to the devs who bothered to code it.

    I completely agree with your statement about being able to have this grand power fantasy against bots. It definitely takes the game's high skill ceiling and drops it immensely and makes it so much more enjoyable. I always used to load of BF2 or even Counter-Strike CZ and go into a match with a friend or two against bots. Like us VS the world. 2v16 or even greater. Not only did it lend itself to really enjoyable meat grinder gameplay, but it even gave some more challenge to the game and kept things interesting, we were able to experiment and see what sorts of strategies would work well against the bots. Actually on this youtube channel of mine, we actually grinded out 100 rounds of CS:CZ in a 2v16 before actually winning, and every round was fun considering we had nothing more to blame but ourselves when our plans didn't work out. IIRC we won by buying riot shields and having the other in the back with a machine gun to mow down enemies. It was truly fun times, and lends itself greatly to fun times with friends, especially when you don't have many friends who play the game. Safe to say I am excited to do 2v126 matches with some friends. This was easily the best news of BF2042 for me.

    Whenever I remember bots I just remembered my childhood. I could never afford genuine copies of games back then so I pirated them, most of the time I was only able to play against bots. The entire Refractor engine lineup of Battlefield games hold a very special place in my heart, especially Battlefield Vietnam. Also that one CoD 4 mod that adds bots into multiplayer.

    Turning the Battlefield series my premier singleplayer childhood experience was my introduction to mods. Turns out there were plenty of people like us who wanted the premier BF experience offline.
    Sorry to hear Philips didn’t get it working in BF2, but the Allied Intent* (AI) and AI eXtended (AIX) mods which were singleplayer and AI focused massive mods (new Maps, Weapons, Wehicles, the works!) kept BF2 relevant to me all the way through 2010.
