Despite what you've been told, that's incorrect. Purple heart is not as susceptible to expansion and contraction as other woods. In most cases you'd be correct, it's not a great idea to alternate grain direction but in this case the board will be fine.

Be careful gluing end grain to long grain. They will expand at different rates. I've seen boards like this start to come apart.
