Just beginning my cutting board journey and I gotta this video has been extremely helpful. The acetone for the wood oils, the sled for the planer, and the speed square for the cross cut. Great stuff man gonna try it out tomorrow
I’m new to wood working since I recently acquired my father in law’s tools when he retired. I have watched so many of your videos and subscribed after the first one. Thanks for helpful and thorough videos! God bless.
I’m watching this and Steve Ramsey video on glue ups for a project I’m doing. You guys are so informative and have saved me from countless times i could of messed up.
I have found that a very useful shortcut is to use a handheld belt sander with 60 grit sandpaper to smooth out the worst of the unevenness after glueup, followed by a random orbit sander for more fine work. This is good for those without planers, and for end-grain cutting boards where planers are risky to use. I've also used this method for tabletops and other things too big to fit in my planer. This is an excellent video; thank you for posting it.
I saw these kits when I saw your video when you went to their shop and I decided I would get several and they are going to be Christmas gifts for those on my list who cook.
Awesome Matt! I've been thinking of trying one of these out but have been a little hesitant because I don't have a thickness planer. Now I will give it a try. Thanks!!
I just purchased 3 cans of the board butter. I have my own hardwoods and plan on making some boards. Never thought of using acetone on the wood first. Thanks for your inspirational videos. Fist bump to you and Mrs. 731.
If you have a drum sander, it works so fast to do the rough sanding and leveling of the board. Using this tool is like night and day over a orbital sander. Also, I usually pop the grain twice sanding lightly in between the two. Enjoyed the video.
Reminds me of highschool took wood shop three years was great! Would be nice if i could start doing things like this again, but no equipment or room for any either
Great video with great tips. Specifically your clamping process. I have a problem with some pieces moving during glue up and I don’t get a flat surface. Going to make the pvc gizmos!
Take a 4 pieces of 1x2 or similar and put packing tape on one side so it doesn't stick to the glue and then clamp each side with smaller clamps. He quickly showed it on a couple boards in the video.
Baby woodworker here and I can’t thank you enough for all videos! They’re super helpful, educational, and inspirational! Thank you! Do you have a particular glue that you like best?
As always great video, I have made a total of 3 cutting boards, one I could not get level it was a tad off it may be during to being a checkerboard type I ripped, glued cut and glued again then after taking all the steps it still had a small wobble, ( as of yet I do not own a planner) so I just went to Home Depot, bought a set of small rubber feet chose the best side for the top and put the feet on the other side, I had to compensate for the wobble by adding a very small washer the same diameter as the foot and it seemed to fix the problem.
Just a suggestion here... put some packing tape on calls and the sacrificial boards you are using to clamp with. Wood glue won't stick to it. In my experience, I have had issues with some painter's tape getting glued to my projects (probably because I am cheap and don't buy the good stuff), then I have to try to scrap it off and end up sanding it off sometimes, which is a total pain. I have never had an issue with glue sticking to the plastic surface of packing tape.
Been planning on making something out of all these 8 ft 1x1 strips of cherry I bought a while back. Think I'm gonna pick up some walnut and hard maple to make them pop a little
Pvc also makes a heck of an explosion when it explodes on your face when you cut it on the miter saw. It fragments, so I always cut it with a sawsawl or (#moredangerous) by rotating it on the table or miter saw. Just cutting it straight down on the miter saw can make it literally explode, and send shrapnel all over the shop.
You did a great job on these boards. I love the advice/tip concerning using the pvc pipes. To me, this was a stroke of genius. I was thinking of ordering a kit or two from the lumber yard until you showed that the boards were not all cut to the same dimensions. This fact changed my mind.
To help fight the slipping wien you glue up, you can sprinkle a bit of salt on the glue before you put the pieces together. This adds a bit of grit and will stop the slip.
Hey Matt, started using Bessy K clamps for primary clamping, other clamps to help, eliminated most of the wommy jaw problems. I make my own board butter. PVC is a great hack thanks
Thank you so much for the great tips! I was wondering if I can reuse the mineral oil in the plastic box after taking out the first board? Thanks again.
I need to get some acetone! Ooo, nobody ever mentioned exotics have oils in them...but then again, its why I consistantly watch YOUR channel. Thanks for these and other tips you throw out to us beginners!
I place rubber feet on the bottom corners of each board. This keeps them sliding around on the counter. You also need to place the cutting board, with the feet, on your counter and sand them so the bottom of the feet are in the same plane. This keeps the board from rocking when using it.
My god!? These look beautiful, thanks for the upload! I'm going to give this a shot this week; by chance can we do the same steps if we want an "end grain" cutting board? So sorry, I'm new?
Light dusting of plain table salt over the glue before you put the pieces together Matt... that will not affect the wood or glue and will prevent the boards from moving when you prep to clamp
Definitely going to try this! Just started my woodworking business and your channel has helped me out a lot with everything including the business name!!
You don't want to clamp the boards directly to your table; the glue run out will end up gluing the board to the table! Using the PVC elevates the cutting boards off the table, and the glue doesn't really stick to PVC.
Sprinkle some tabla salt on the surfaces after you apply the glue and as you clamp the piece, the salt will keep it from sliding around and will dissolve and will not make the joint any weaker
Hello. Thanks for the info. Do you find the darker woods bleed their color while in the bath? Do you reuse the mineral oil in a week or two on other cutting board builds?

P.S I like the use of the white plastic pipes to keep it level.
Thanks
Love to see you and Amy in the shop together. Hope all is going well my friend.

Great insight using the PVC pipe thank soo much . You're small tricks to use with the planer are super 👌

Never knew cutting board kits were a thing. Thanks for the idea, they look amazing! I will certainly be adding these kits to the projects I make.
Gives me the idea of selling them...as in making the pieces and selling them as kits.
I think the $ 80 they are selling for the kits are way too much!! It may be a bit more work to cut your own but wow $80...
I use General finishes salad bowl finish. I like the look better then mineral oil.

Yes, the same steps apply as far as glue up and finishing. Sanding will take longer on end grain

90 degree elbows makes a nice easy substitute to the wood supports.
That’s a good idea!
Awesome tips! Mildly confused by using PVC pipe to keep the boards flat though. If you can expand on that a little, it would be helpful.
You don't want to clamp the boards directly to your table; the glue run out will end up gluing the board to the table! Using the PVC elevates the cutting boards off the table, and the glue doesn't really stick to PVC.
