Emotion in Therapy

  • It is a cliche that therapists all want their clients to feel their feelings. But there is a deeper reason behind this, one that goes far beyond catharsis, or 'getting something off one's chest'. Only when we have a new, empowering, connected, regulated experience of emotion can our brain learn that emotions aren't dangerous. This is important, because when we are having an emotion, and simultaneously feeling threatened by it, this is when the feeling will produce suffering. There may be no single more important key to changing our quality of life than learning how to experience emotion as part of our aliveness and connection to our selves...as a friend rather than a foe. Doing so allows us to be freed from emotional torment and greatly reduces anxiety.

    I have a very good therapist. But it is always impossible for me to share my pain, i can’t even talk to myself about it, it is so unbelievably painful that I tell myself there is nothing to talk about and the pain grows each day.

      If you can't speak it aloud, please write it out. Speaking from firsthand experience, keeping it inside can feed into health issues. *Hippie kid tip, writing it down and then burning it helps with the release.*

      @@halimashealing Hi, I don’t think I can. Cause I’ve convinced myself there is nothing to write or talk about. I know it seems kinda stupid that I do have something yet I tell and make myself believe it is nothing.

    What do you do if as soon as you are at that point your brain sends up a mental mental block and you totally lose the train of thought/emotional connection?

    I literally HATE CRYING in THERAPY. I will NEVER have another message. I told my therapist about an issue and I wish to God that I never had told him. What do I do now?

    • @ralfwashington1502
      @ralfwashington1502 Год назад +2

      Why do you wish you never told him? Did he act wrong in response? Or were you just second guessing letting that close guarded info slip out? If it's number 2 it's due to shame. The best thing to do is bring this up next session. If he used it against you and in an extremely unprofessional way purposely trying to do harm then don't tell him and drop him. Otherwise bring it up. To learn more about shame there are a lot of good videos from "Bene Brown" on YT. She has lots of good info on shame.

    You are not to get close to your therapist. Why would I do that? It’s not going to benefit me. My therapist has a new office and it is very small. I am used to having a big desk between his chair and mine. Now,his chair is too close to me. I want to have therapy in the hallway.

      Funny you say that cause I always ask my clients where they would like me to put my chair and we play with it until it feels like just the right distance...
