@@000xyz I don't see why, Matau was arrogant and the most interested in becoming a real toa again, but had no reason to join Roodoaka. Vakama on the other hand was in a very fragile place after learning that he was never ment to be a toa. He believed that destiny was on his side and with that information and the fact that he got everyone captured and mutated and several of the toa, (Matau being the loudest) blaming him specially, he snapped and was easy to manipulate. He took the mentality that if he has no predetermined destiny then he must make one himself and tried to take on the entire Visorak horde by himself... and failed. He then figured that if he could not beat the Visorak then he could control them. Roodoaka may have been able to twist the minds of the other toa if given the chance but Vakama was the most vulnerable at that time.
Growing up to the final battle for Mata-Nui's awakening left me with suspense but seeing Mata-Nui Island itself collapse made me realize that my childhood fell with it. Bionicle fan to the end!
Well, perhaps there will be more hope for the new Bionicle. Sure, it's a reboot, but given that Lego is giving shows to several other franchises right now, I'm sure it'll give it's most promising brand some good treatment. :~)

Places like the labyrinth of the great beings, bota magna, the red star, etc, were supposed to have had years dedicated to them, but when bionicle was cancelled they had to rush ahead into the final conflict.
I believe 2009 would have been amazing had Lego not cancelled it. They should have kept it as they did. Its frankly legos own fault they had to cancel. There where too many sets coming at the same time with only a year to get them all, they where expensive and the designs where inferior to their older versions. As they lacked articulation in so many places and we got these massive body parts even bigger than the Toa mata build! I mean, look at Nektann. In comparisson to the Piraka he is a joke. Then again, he was part of the line that was made efter the cancellation. But I mean, look at the Mata nui Titan set, sure we got a metallic golden mask. But the build itself is bery square, awkward in design and just not very pleasing to look at. Comparing it to say Brutaka or Axonn and you can see the issues. Bigger is not always better
Question: What does Bionicle have going for it that made it such a universal success? Answer: Care. Such devotion was put into the sets and, far more importantly, the story. The result: Bionicle stands as a pinnacle moment in Lego's history and we shall never see it's like again.
Yeah, because you grew up. You're not a kid anymore, so that sense of wonderment and awe is long gone for you to feel anything for the new series. I do too, but at least my 6 and 2 year old brothers are having a blast with the new ones. I'm passing down the torch to a new generation of fans who'll probably be saying the same thing you are saying right now in the near future when G2 also ends, and a new series takes its place. The Bionicle 2001-2010 story needs to be made into a proper movie/TV series, with all those extra serials and podcasts being made as some sort of extras or mini-TV series' (Like the Marvel movies with agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) If not, an anime based off Bionicle will do.
That's what I'm saying! The movies weren't bad but I had such trouble trying to keep up with the storyline...especially after the first one, two and three got me a little confused and I was way off at Legend Reborn...and when they went from like changing their designs I was like wait, how did they change and go underwater, now they're in the air? I guess also comic books will do but I think a good TV/movie/web series would help keep some of us up with the storyline....

I subscribed to the Lego Club Magazine in mid-2001, and the first issue I got came with this weird comic book for some theme I'd never heard of. It was Bionicle, issue #1. Even though I didn't start collecting the sets until 2003, I still have every single issue of the comic in my closet. When I read the issue where Mata Nui rises, I could scarcely believe what I was seeing, and when the eyes changed colour, and the image turns to the sky, where the stars in that age old constellation of the Unity, Duty, Destiny symbol suddenly change to form the Mask of Shadows, I had to stop and take some time to register. After all these years, all these adventures and Saturday morning cartoon hero/villain plots and world shaping events designed to sell toys to kids, and all the fun heroes and cool characters... The struggles, the sacrifices, the victories, the losses, after all that... He won. Makuta. Won. There's no going back in time and undoing it. Makuta is time. There's no fighting back against the forces of darkness unleashed on the universe. Makuta is the universe. Will you fight the ground on which you stand? The air you breathe? The very matter of your being exists by the will of Makuta.
When Mata Nui rose, it was actually the first time in just over 1,000 years, not 100,000. Mata Nui crashed on the ocean world of Aqua Magna when Makuta put him to sleep during the events of Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui.
I was born a little too late for bionicle, and really only noticed it existed right as it was ending around 2010. but it was something special. Discovering all of the older stuff and the lore felt extremely special to me, and coupled with the fact i didnt know much english back then, it truly felt like uncovering some ancient texts lol.
It’s stuff like this that makes me miss the old lego: cheap, simple, and so much fun. They’re now a multi billion dollar company that has gone work and made all their sets incredibly expensive while the quality has gone down. Bionicle is the ultimate of all time and I will respect it forever
Speak for yourself on the supposed quality of sets. Cost has definitely gone up but generally so has quality. We’re getting tons of more complex builds and sets aimed at AFOLs as well as children.
You poor, poor, closed-minded and ignorant soul. Poor sales and lack of interest from the general public was the cause of Bionicle's original run. Hero Factory actually "saved" Bionicle, believe it or not. It was just a stand in for Bionicle's hiatus and provided LEGO the extra money it needed to budget and plan Bionicle's return in 2015. It was planned to return since 2012, which was only Hero Factory's second year in and was coincidentally the introduction to CCBS(Creature and Character Building System AKA The Hero Factory Build). Also, Hero Factory was only to test out the waters on what people had interests in.

I find it hilarious how makuta could have just pretended to be Mata nui and gone about his conquering business without the toa or anyone else knowing (since he teleported those who did know out of his body). But nooo, he just HAD to rub it in their faces that he had WON. He had to see them tremble in fear and terror, because he wanted them to know he was in control now.
I don't see why they would. They're trying to entice new fans. Trying to sum up 10 years of one of the most convoluted storylines ever developed would probably turn quite a few people off. :P
holy hell me and my brother lost interest in the whole series sometime after the Toa Hordika transformed. I think he bought some big sets and kept up with the comics longer than I did, but dayumm. I've missed a lot it seems.
This video saddens me. Nostalgia of my mama taking me to Toys R Us, running to the lego section and asking if I can get the big-big set. The answer was most times a “No,” but you never know lol. Playing games like Left 4 Dead and it’s sequel. The memories.

Damn this lego-icon made out of the falling 1x1 bricks and the sound that played alongside it... that's a MAJOR throwback to early lego. I remember the old lego technic software that came with a certain set that was like a bulldozer... that's been long.
The way BIONICLE gen 1. essentially ended was really at the beginning (unfinished business sort of thing). Early on, 100 millenia ago, Mata nui intended to reunite the moons (Aqua Magna and Boto Magna) to Bara Magna, the majority of the planet. That's when Teradax (brother Makuta) confronted him during the mending and sent Mata Nui careening through space back toward Aqua Magna, where upon crashlanding on the planet, he hit his head, lying unconscious for the next 100 thousand years. That's when Makuta invaded his internal universe over the course of the story to slowly gain power. Cloaking devices from his body and other terraforming devices then encrusted his face in time, resulting in the island of Mata Nui. This major precursor event in the story became known as 'The Great Cataclysm" which we also witnessed on-screen (unknown to us as being in the body at the time) with the Toa's fight with Makuta Teradax as the crescent moon eyes close in the dark sky in the film: Legends of Metru Nui.
So is it atleast save to assume that the Island of Mata Nui was completely abandoned before Mata Nui rose up? Otherwise that's a lot of potential Matoran and Boroks Mata Nui just killed

Finding out Mata-Nui was just the FACE of a giant fucking Bionicle was the biggest mindfuck most kids have ever experienced. It literally came out of left field with almost NOTHING indicating that might be the case.

I'd like to imagine this as a prelude to a new Lego movie. Where all previous advertising is centered around Emmet and his adventure, before the movie starts we see a recap of the Bionicle story, putting in every drop of effort to get the audience invested in this property before, suddenly, it stops. "But as The Mask of Life made its journey into the stars above, Lego cancelled Bionicle." The narrator says, somberly. "The story would be given an abridged ending, an unsatisfying conclusion to such an epic tale. The Biological Chronicle... was over..." "But to brave Tahu, it was not the end. As time passed with Bionicle fading into memory, noble Tahu refused to simply be forgotten. While he had realized that he was but a plastic toy long after the cancellation, his story, no, his _life_ was still real to him. He remembered the struggle, the friends he made, and the ones he lost. He could not rest without proper closure." "For a moment, Tahu and the others had a chance to prove themselves once more, but times had changed and the story was simplified. The Toa could not stay on store shelves, and without sales the story ended there too." "But stubborn Tahu refused this fate as well, and did everything he could to save himself, the Toa, the Matorans, Mata Nui, and even the vile Makuta. And so, seizing an opportunity involving a Legoland promotion, Tahu took control of a set and waited for an opportunity to escape." Then boom the intro ends, and we get to the actual movie with Emmet. It starts out normal with a plotline mostly involving defending against zombie hordes of legos made from broken pieces, but then Tahu swoops in and just deals with the problem seeking the aid of anyone willing to embark to the nearest Lego HQ to resurrect Bionicle and finish the original story.
For a while. Makuta succeeded in what no other evil being could have ever succeeded: *became the Universe.* What's going to happen now... And then he had his brains blown out by a planet. Totally deserved that.
As a bionicel and lord of the rings fan. Makuta did what Morgoth did. He lost the war but poisoned the planet of middle earth so like makuta he is everywhere and nowhere. Cool.
As cool as it was finally seeing Mata Nui in toa form, I honestly thought the main character of the Bara Magna storyline was going to be Toa Ignika. I mean, the guy was wearing the Mask of Life and was introduced as a "hero reborn."
I really wish the movies had the same art style that the promotional material had, instead of what they had. I always thought the designs in the movies were ugly.
I really do hope they bring bionicle back and retcon the 2009 story. I think it was a good idea at the time, a god made human, holding life and creation in his hands crash-landing on a planet where those things have all but faded is a fantastic premise, but I just don't think they tried hard enough on rejuvinating the story.
mh, I heard that they shut it down because it was becoming a Huge storyline, and it wasn't super appealing to the youngs so they made Hero Factory. Kinda like the case of One Piece, it was a good anime, but I watched it when I was like 10, now I'm 21 and we probably are still half way through it

I've been examining the material released so far, and I think they're doing a continuation, with a significant timegap, and from the descriptions, I'd say it's a medieval theme.
kieran10202 it will propebly be a reboot with nods to the old story for older fans set in the same univirse and most likely on spherus magna ... it will most definately not follow all the rules off the previous series tho as the stroy got too complicated for most children to follow
2009 is so canon, that's when mata-Nui is actually awakend and then possessed by Teridax. That's probably the most important part of the story. You think it's just gonna end with Karda Nui
It was just a really unnecessary storyline. The thing that made this ending special was the fact that the bad guy actually won, and all their efforts had actually been helping the bad guy. 2009 just kinda went, "NEVERMIND, GOOD GUY WINS, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER REALLY PREDICTABLE STORY EVER," and ruined what made it unique.
And after THAT, the G1 story ends with the whole Bionicle universe at peace. Since the new reboot is coming, it may end differently, though I'm sure that the heroes will win again, because let's face it, that ALWAYS happens no matter what.

I find it hilarious how makuta could have just pretended to be Mata nui and gone about his conquering business without the toa or anyone else knowing (since he teleported those who did know out of his body). But nooo, he just HAD to rub it in their faces that he had WON. He had to see them tremble in fear and terror, because he wanted them to know he was in control now.

I loved the Legend Reborn Bionicle movie, it was a movie I rewatched often. I actually ended up scoring a Mata Nui from a farmers market.

holy hell me and my brother lost interest in the whole series sometime after the Toa Hordika transformed. I think he bought some big sets and kept up with the comics longer than I did, but dayumm. I've missed a lot it seems.

Damn this lego-icon made out of the falling 1x1 bricks and the sound that played alongside it... that's a MAJOR throwback to early lego. I remember the old lego technic software that came with a certain set that was like a bulldozer... that's been long.
If only the same storyline continued with Bionicle. Now in Bionicle 2015 we're still gonna have Tahu and the rest. But what about Takanuva?

The way BIONICLE gen 1. essentially ended was really at the beginning (unfinished business sort of thing). Early on, 100 millenia ago, Mata nui intended to reunite the moons (Aqua Magna and Boto Magna) to Bara Magna, the majority of the planet. That's when Teradax (brother Makuta) confronted him during the mending and sent Mata Nui careening through space back toward Aqua Magna, where upon crashlanding on the planet, he hit his head, lying unconscious for the next 100 thousand years. That's when Makuta invaded his internal universe over the course of the story to slowly gain power. Cloaking devices from his body and other terraforming devices then encrusted his face in time, resulting in the island of Mata Nui. This major precursor event in the story became known as 'The Great Cataclysm" which we also witnessed on-screen (unknown to us as being in the body at the time) with the Toa's fight with Makuta Teradax as the crescent moon eyes close in the dark sky in the film: Legends of Metru Nui.

Finding out Mata-Nui was just the FACE of a giant fucking Bionicle was the biggest mindfuck most kids have ever experienced. It literally came out of left field with almost NOTHING indicating that might be the case.

I'd like to imagine this as a prelude to a new Lego movie. Where all previous advertising is centered around Emmet and his adventure, before the movie starts we see a recap of the Bionicle story, putting in every drop of effort to get the audience invested in this property before, suddenly, it stops.
"But as The Mask of Life made its journey into the stars above, Lego cancelled Bionicle." The narrator says, somberly. "The story would be given an abridged ending, an unsatisfying conclusion to such an epic tale. The Biological Chronicle... was over..."
"But to brave Tahu, it was not the end. As time passed with Bionicle fading into memory, noble Tahu refused to simply be forgotten. While he had realized that he was but a plastic toy long after the cancellation, his story, no, his _life_ was still real to him. He remembered the struggle, the friends he made, and the ones he lost. He could not rest without proper closure."
"For a moment, Tahu and the others had a chance to prove themselves once more, but times had changed and the story was simplified. The Toa could not stay on store shelves, and without sales the story ended there too."
"But stubborn Tahu refused this fate as well, and did everything he could to save himself, the Toa, the Matorans, Mata Nui, and even the vile Makuta. And so, seizing an opportunity involving a Legoland promotion, Tahu took control of a set and waited for an opportunity to escape."
Then boom the intro ends, and we get to the actual movie with Emmet. It starts out normal with a plotline mostly involving defending against zombie hordes of legos made from broken pieces, but then Tahu swoops in and just deals with the problem seeking the aid of anyone willing to embark to the nearest Lego HQ to resurrect Bionicle and finish the original story.

Sums of Bionicle really well, I wish they had added on the Glatorians saga to this movie too though. Overall it was good 10 out of 10.
It was produced during 2008's end, so the Glatorians weren't spoiled just yet and the Mata Nui series.

As a bionicel and lord of the rings fan. Makuta did what Morgoth did. He lost the war but poisoned the planet of middle earth so like makuta he is everywhere and nowhere. Cool.
I've said it before and will continue to say it until the end of days: Bionicles are (if not the best "toys") the greatest action-figures ever made.

As cool as it was finally seeing Mata Nui in toa form, I honestly thought the main character of the Bara Magna storyline was going to be Toa Ignika. I mean, the guy was wearing the Mask of Life and was introduced as a "hero reborn."

I really wish the movies had the same art style that the promotional material had, instead of what they had. I always thought the designs in the movies were ugly.
I really do hope they bring bionicle back and retcon the 2009 story. I think it was a good idea at the time, a god made human, holding life and creation in his hands crash-landing on a planet where those things have all but faded is a fantastic premise, but I just don't think they tried hard enough on rejuvinating the story.
mh, I heard that they shut it down because it was becoming a Huge storyline, and it wasn't super appealing to the youngs so they made Hero Factory. Kinda like the case of One Piece, it was a good anime, but I watched it when I was like 10, now I'm 21 and we probably are still half way through it

I've been examining the material released so far, and I think they're doing a continuation, with a significant timegap, and from the descriptions, I'd say it's a medieval theme.
kieran10202 it will propebly be a reboot with nods to the old story for older fans set in the same univirse and most likely on spherus magna ... it will most definately not follow all the rules off the previous series tho as the stroy got too complicated for most children to follow

2009 is so canon, that's when mata-Nui is actually awakend and then possessed by Teridax. That's probably the most important part of the story. You think it's just gonna end with Karda Nui
It was just a really unnecessary storyline. The thing that made this ending special was the fact that the bad guy actually won, and all their efforts had actually been helping the bad guy. 2009 just kinda went, "NEVERMIND, GOOD GUY WINS, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER REALLY PREDICTABLE STORY EVER," and ruined what made it unique.
***** I know, but it's still really drawn-out and unnecessary.
And after THAT, the G1 story ends with the whole Bionicle universe at peace. Since the new reboot is coming, it may end differently, though I'm sure that the heroes will win again, because let's face it, that ALWAYS happens no matter what.
