    Everything else in this video was totally fine and very helpful, the only issue I see is the shells for food and water dishes, for a food dish it's fine, and for water too, but only if you also provide salt water and fresh water pools as well that they can fully submerge themselves in and get in and out of easily, otherwise great video and thanks for the tips

      Thanks, my crabs get both fresh and salt water and at the time, they were small enough to submerge in the shell dishes. They have since upgraded to deeper tupperware.

      I know im not them but I have a few tips for that.
      If your leaveing them get a trimmer for your lights so they can still have there regulated sun.
      Put plenty of food in for them and water (try nuts dryed barrys and fruits) and big water dishes with wayd for them to get out.
      I'm not a expert but I do own 6 crabs and have had them for awile and they Have done pretty well with this! Hope it helps some!

    Two questions first how often do you change the substrate for the cocanut fiber/play sand mixture? Is Malaysian drift wood safe for hurmit crabs?I bought orgnally for my fish tank

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  4 года назад +1

      I am not sure about the driftwood. I only change the substrate when there is a problem. Like if I had bugs or the tank flooded. So you theoretically could go years without having to change the substrate.

    How do you make your intro and my hermit crab does not climb and I have stuff to let her climb but she likes to just walk around on the ground and is it ok to keep different types of hermit crabs together

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  6 лет назад

      1. I made my intro on windows movie maker
      2. It’s okay if your crab doesn’t want to climb as long as you provide them the option. (Incorrect temperature or humidity could be the reason for inactivity)
      3. It is fine to keep multiple species together, but they do best in groups of two or more. For example, if you have purple pinchers and want an Ecuadorian, get at least two Ecuadorians so that they have a friend of the same species.

    • @Lizw6
      @Lizw6 5 лет назад

      Usually it is fine to keep different breeds of hermit crabs together. I have two and they have completely different colors except for the purple pincher.

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  6 лет назад

    Ok at the beginning of the video when you showed your hermit who just molted it had all of his colour but when my just molted he had barley any of his colour (It's been about a week so some of his colour is back) and lost a lot of body mass. Why is this?

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  5 лет назад

      A hermit crab's color reflects the nutrition they get so if you just purchased the crab and he molted, chances are the color won't be great because pet stores just feed pellets. Also, all crabs have a slightly different color, I have a bright red, pale pink, dark purple, and the rest fall somewhere in between.

    How do you hang the plants?

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  6 лет назад +1

      For a screen lid it is easy, just stick the bottom of the plant through the screen and it should stay. If it doesn’t stay you can tape it to the lid. If the lid is glass or plexiglass you have to tape the plants.

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971

      I don’t know about all the kinds of wood, and if they are hermit safe or not, although you could look online for a complete list (The Crabstreet Journal has a good article about hermit safe wood). For example though, anything evergreen is toxic to hermit crabs while oak is safe for them. Also, jute and hemp twine are usually hermit safe as long as they’re not sprayed with pesticides or dyed.

    Please do not use sand or dirt in your crabitat. Use coconut fiber(eco earth) or a mix of coconut fiber and playground sand.

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  5 лет назад +1

      I saw both of your comments. First of all their is absolutely nothing wrong with using just play sand. I have used it successfully for 16 years! It does not harden in their shells. Secondly, in all the videos you have commented on I am using a mix of eco and play sand (not sure why you have mentioned it twice). Thirdly where did I say it was okay to use dirt?

    • @Lizw6
      @Lizw6 5 лет назад

      Hermits, Hounds, and Horses I’m happy it works for you😁👍 but I know a lot of people who lost their crabs do to the sand. I did not mean it in a bad way. I truly hope my comments didn’t come out as rude. I love your crabs. They are extremely cute and are very happy. I’m extremely sorry if offended you. You clearly are a very experienced hermit crab owner and I hope to see more videos on the adorable crabs soon.😊❤️❤️❤️

    • @Lizw6
      @Lizw6 5 лет назад

      My comment wasn’t completely directed to you. I wanted others to know that using dirt and or sand can be dangerous. I’m very sorry, I didn’t realize the substrate was a mix. Please forgive me for my mistake I just want the best for all hermit crabs. I also apologize for commenting on two videos. I had been viewing many channels with hermit crab videos and one was using dirt and I may have confused what video I was going to say that you should not use dirt. I’ve been viewing many people’s videos and replying to crab owners questions that aren’t answered. I truly apologize for my comments bothering you. I hope you can forgive me.

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971

  • @Adelaideanegg

    how do you prevent mold with the humidity? i get it unless i always look in the hiding places and spray with salt water ._.

    • @hermitshoundsandhorses9971
      @hermitshoundsandhorses9971  6 лет назад

      Hmm, I don’t know if I can help you with this one...my crabitat gets mold really easily as well. I would just check for mold and clean your crabitat regularly. That’s about all you can do(because they need it so humid), but if you stay on top of it, at least you can keep it to a minimum.

    • @Lizw6
      @Lizw6 5 лет назад

      Spot clean the tank daily and also spray down the tank with fresh water not salt water. You should have a dechlorinated bowl of water and dechlorinated salt water bowl
