    Quality video - thank you for putting this out there. I really appreciate it when respected institutions share their knowledge with the world on RUclips. It's a shame this has fewer than 1000 views as of today as it deserves to be watched by far more people.

    Britain was the first to split the atom because of people like Sir John Cockcroft and the Tube Alloys Project which was far more advanced than the US at the time.
    But because of their proximity to the front line they moved to the US and changed their name to the Manhattan project. In short without Britain I doubt the Manhattan project would of happened.

    • @Kreatorisbackyt

      The engine of the atomic bomb and all technology of Atomic bomb was developed in Britain
      But in 1946 U.S shamelessly refused to call the project as British and to an extent american project
      And US just called it American invension but British remained silent because they were the ones who invented the atomic bomb idea and project in 1940
      They completed the all work on nuclear bomb in 1950 and tested the bomb in 1952
      And in 1949 Soviet with the help of spies also able to replicate the atomic bomb
      Both USSR & UK shocked Americans

    • @tb-cg6vd
      @tb-cg6vd Год назад

      @@Kreatorisbackyt One of the reasons why the US did not share the technology with the UK in 1946 is because of Klaus Fuchs - part of the British contingent at Los Alamos who gave the information to the Soviet Union to kick start their own programme. This did not go down well with our Atlantic cousins!!!

    • @richardvernon317
      @richardvernon317 Год назад

      @@tb-cg6vd Fuchs was not exposed until 1950. There were US people spying for the Soviets at Los Alamos as well. US just wanted to keep everything for themselves.

    Interesting bit on giving France thermonuclear technology in 1967 there is a vein of thought that this is why France dropped it’s opposition to Great Britain joining the EEC as it was then.

    This film.is very good for something so short , but it missed out some quite important chapters of the UK nuclear story. 1. Blue steal , the upgrade of the v force from free fall bombs to a short to midrange stand of missile. 2 the Polaris upgrade call "Chevreline" In 80s to improve penetration.

      Fun fact, land based missiles in silos in Scotland or Northumbria was scrapped for a lot of reasons, one of them being, to build just one silo field it was estimated that it would have taken the entire amount of concrete produced in the UK in one year.

      Scotland wouldn’t get them, as they are a minor state in the Union, and thus not covered by the NPT as a recognised nuclear power. The Royal Navy would either maintain control of Faslane in the same way as we still own Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus or less likely the sub base would be moved to Portsmouth

    We was dependent on the Americans for our weapons it was literally only missile delivery system & we owned 70% of the worlds nuclear weapons grade materials from Australia, south Africa & Canada so i wish he'd got his facts right as up until today & currently has a completely independent nuclear weapons program, the Americans have no say in our operations with our warheads!!! It does annoy me when he spits this nonsense out as its pure rubbish so go watch on RUclips the channel history matters & find "why did Britain build nuclear weapons" it explains everything factually 10 times better in 4 mins

  • @Anmeteor9663

    Britains nukes are most ferrainly NOT an independant deterrant. The order to launch missiles will not come from Downing street or UK forces HQ but from NATO commander. This is always a US General. Only UK taxpayers pay for it though

    • @thomasgate416
      @thomasgate416 3 года назад +11

      No, you are quite mistaken. If necessary the UK would launch the nukes themselves if threatened, the NATO command system is just a formality, in actuality, impending nuclear doom would cause them to retaliate as soon as possible.

    • @Dave-hu5hr
