Hoffmann for president!
He's not wrong. So many shitty, cheaply-made products contribute massively to climate change. What happens to these products after people buy them and then dispose of them after a year or so?
@@Mentocthemindtaker This is actually a very non political issue. Trash products damage the environment and waste resources. If 10% of these espresso machines are still working in 2022 I would be amazed. If manufacturers were required to stand by their warranty and offer local repairs or pay for shipping trash like this would be gone overnight. Who is going to pay $200 to ship their machine to china and back?
@@MDK-oq5vb like yeah, why do people still bother to grab espresso appliances that break after a year and produce drinks that are worse than a moka with frothed milk. As for your what I'm going to perceive as not climate change denial but something close to, I will say this. It should not be up to the citizens to make those leaps first. Electric cars so early is dumb, cold-turkeying our selves off petrolium is dumb. You know what makes sense? doing the easy stuff first and stop trying to magic bullet the issue with tech. Have all poluting industry do carbon cap on site to a high percentage, make transit highly viable with 20's tech called a bus FFS. We the people should be pressuring the CEO's and stakeholders of industry to clamp down first. So you can scoff all you want at my point but the fact is they're right, the problem as always is the greedy few.
Thats what I'm thinking lately, lot's of cheap crap produced which just doesn't work correctly. I mean come on, just make some quality items that's more expensive, but will last you for decades. But i guessing that's just not how money making works and that is sad.

That pivot caught me off guard and was pure gold
It's a bit more of a things like this, not just this machine in particular, are wastes of resources. They use more than they need and don't do their tasks well.
That's common with some of those single use products. An avocado slice/scoop appliance can't compete with a spoon and knife, so why do they exist?
and all they forgot to put in OPV lol
That was brutal.

TBF Aldi does come up with some great stuff, I'm guessing it's just hit or miss based on who sells the Aldi execs on their product for rebrand. I had an Aldi pressure cooker I used for several years & in some ways it was better than the insta pot I now use. It had really nice controls for specific timing at pressure & the release valve was such that you could do in-between releases rather than just slow & fast (so it doesn't spit angry steam all over).

Thank you. This is the correct response to a bad product. Badly designed products are unethical.
Part of the problem with poor equipment is hat they simply give up and carry on going (in this case) to their mermaid based coffee shop down the road.
Good example/analogy of this would be something like a bike from a supermarket. Dave the factory worker (other factory workers are available) sees a bike shaped object next to the potatoes and decides to have a go at commuting to work on it. Problem is that it’s poor build quality, a bit heavy and breaks quite often so he just goes back to his car. If he’s been to an actual bike shop and spent a bit more, had it set up properly he’d have more likely continued to use it even if it cost an extra few quid.

James I'd love to see your take on a "budget" setup for making espresso, like a good cheap grinder and machine that I don't need to spend several weeks' pay on combined. I've mostly kept to manual grinders and pourover/infusion coffee because of budget restrictions so far and I'd love your opinion on this.
Seraph He’s said in several videos that he’s just not a fan of home espresso because you need expensive machines and lot of time and resources (e.g., cleaning, dialing in) to get proper results. Thus, he would rather go and pay a few dollars to get espresso at a coffee shop and have someone else deal with all that. In any case, it would be interesting to see what’s his recommendation for a budget setup.
Antonio Riojas are manual espresso machines like the flaire any good? I’ve been interested in those for a while as I’ve not really got a nice cafe nearby and making your own espresso leads to some pretty big savings in the long run

@@KingdomOfApple yup, the only people who think he’s a snob are the people that can’t logically think so they just quick group people into groups without thinking
@@Adam-vx6to Oath. It's just way easier for people to do that, so hey, why not just keep doing that?
Lol and people making fun of him calling a 299 machine cheep, but if you know machines that isn't a lot
For a snob he is kind of endearing..
Am I the only guy who suspects the dislikes came from Aldi social media team? James gave his usual honest + professional review and the comments here siding James.
That or people who have been assigned 'aldi wine drinkers' by the algorithm got this shoved in their face heard James doesn't shop there, and disliked
It’s bloody 299 pound machine. Better spend well than wasting it imo. 🤷♂️
Maybe do a video on best budget espresso machines? Sub £300
I’m conflicted between my love for Aldi and laughing so hard at how savage James is when roasting this machine 😂
The wine is really good there after all

"A newt?"

Nothing to do with this video but my 7yr old calls you "The Coffee Hero" so there you go.

It's the opposite of polite and poetic actually. Very direct and matter of fact.
"I suspect a number of terrible things happened at once" I'm dead. This guy is amazing
@Dym Sohin every war in a nutshell
Thank-you ... for probably the most brutally honest review I've ever seen for an espresso machine. I know all of your reviews are honest, but the words you chose to describe this "monstrosity" were sublime. These words needed to be said.
Please continue to review, and tell us exactly the emotions these devices conjur in your head.
“I hate it, it’s a waste of resources. This is why we have climate change issues!” 😂
He is not wrong.
@Tom R that's BS, imagine that somehow, with magic wand you would disappear all bad coffee machines, all the $50 Amazon exclusive jokes, imagine how much resources would be saved eliminating need for designing, building, transporting and fairly fast recycling of those devices.
@@maryam8538 great then don't buy espresso machine, there is so many much cheaper ways of getting excellent cup of coffee that is not espresso.
Has anyone else here heard of sarcasm or humour
@Tom R His point is that the coffee machine offers nothing, despite taking up resources. Of course everything we use requires resources, but if we get something out of it then it's still of value. If you get nothing out of it (as he is suggesting about the coffee machine), then it becomes a true waste of resources.
"This is why we have climate change" worst insult for a product ever!
I've watched this now four times. It's just fun to watch James Hoffman completely destroy a product.
I feel better now I have only watched it three times.
Some many good bits in the video. I liked the grudging recognition that it might be able to do milk in a passable way.
This is EXACTLY the same issue I had with my Breville Barista Express several years ago. It's actually nice to have the issue explained. Now I'm thinking about getting back into home espresso, but this time I'm looking at a $3000 Rocket machine.
Watch his comparison video of coffee machines around that price range, he doesn't recommend rocket
or may be a Flair58 or Cafelat Robot can be more tolerating to bad puck
A thought, and this is a totally subjective thing. This machine probably aims to produce an Italian normale shot, 7 grams of coffee to 21ml of water over 20 or so seconds. From this machines "point of view," you were trying to pull a triple ristretto, and it just couldn't take it. Would love to see how it goes with less coffee in the basket.
Luke Kenny as an italian, i totally agree.
@@sisi-ey8hs If that's true then why didn't they call the machine a Normale?
Its a double shot tho, but yes likely dose was too high
Agreed, this machine is being sold to the average Joe that just wants espresso at home.
You are not going to get $1000 quality from a machine sold at ALDI.
@@IllusiveAdventures An average Joe that wants espresso at home will get better coffee from MUCH cheaper items than this. That's Hoffman's point.
It might be reasonable to suggest that the Aldi's target audience with this espresso machine would be satisfied with the first shot you produced in this video.
The thing is: you can get better machines for that price (sage bambino plus)
@@JonasBecker point still stands, the target audience wouldn't even know or care likely
@@JonasBecker .. which doesn't come with a grinder though. So to be entirely fair, you'd need to compare the bambino using pre-ground coffee/a pressurized filter against the Aldi machine potentially using freshly (albeit maybe badly) ground coffee. And last but not least, the bambino currently retails for around 399 GBP in the UK, so 100 bucks more
@@BogeyVision well regular coffee from a pot tastes much better then a shitty espresso shot... id be mad if i paid 300$ for a machine thats makes worse coffee than a 15$ coffee maker.
I disagree. If somebody doesn't really know or care they'd probably get an inexpensive drip coffee machine. If somebody was putting 300+ down on an espresso machine they probably care at least enough to not want it to taste awful
Coogan has really stepped up his character-immersion game, here.
The use of the cake's resistance to regulate pressure probably would make users think their ability to tamp, the grind size they chose or anything at their end is the problem, not the machine's. It makes for a frustrating experience.
Yes, this is why I’m just as mad as James. I have been in the position to have a cheap espresso machine and I wasted hours of my life thinking I was too dumb to make a good drink. I feel for the people scammed by this grocery store chain and blaming themselves while the CEO laughs all the way to the bank.
Not sure I understand. How else would you regulate the brewing pressure if not by choosing the correct grind level? Coarser grind, faster flow, lower pressure. And vice versa. Can you please elaborate?
@@thomasvocke1707 All modern real espresso machines have an over pressure valve that regulates pressure to 9-10bar.
Everything: going to shit
James: Mm, pre-infusion.
* I hate this coffee machine... This is a stupid coffee machine 😂
First thing I said to my wife watching this “God I hope he drinks one of these shots” and there it was. How We love you James. Slow zoom on the facial expression killed me.
You live a wild life, Hunter.
God damn Aldi fans absolutely malding in these comments because James brought up some objectively bad sides to the machine that make it a horrible purchase. What is the point of an espresso machine that *literally cant* brew at espresso grind sizes? You have to grind so much coarser just to get it to function that it tastes awful.
Like he said, you can get better coffee out of a cheap Mocha Pot, and the entire production of this machine is basically just a giant pile of waste because of that.
Here's a suggestion to the people mad that James *dared* to insult your precious Aldi: dont tie your self-worth to the public perception of a company.
congratulations citizen, you have won todays youtube algorithm lottery
pretty sure it's because lots of people are sharing the video with friends so they can laugh at him

A bit of Ira Glass too.
Mateusz Teleśnicki he looks like James Hoffman.

I don't like coffee but watching a man critique a poor quality coffee machine offers endless entertainment. Thank you.
This felt surprisingly close to the same reaction my father had when i offered him for christmas a Lidl Parkside battery chainsaw when he always used religiously his 50cc Husqvarna
@@MsWagons I bought a DeWalt 18v chainsaw a couple of years ago and it's replaced my old Stihl in my recovery truck. Obviously I'm not a professional lumberjack the amount of times I need to use a chainsaw in a year I can count on one hand since I only need it when someone has crashed a car in such a way I need to cut branches or whole trees to get it out.
Husqvarna is one of the tops, stil is good too.
@@MsWagons For now. One more generational leap in battery tech and all these small-engine internal combustion appliances are dead. Even now, I couldn't go back to a 4-stroke lawnmower, it's just so much more convenient to press-and-go on the electric. And two-stroke? Fuggedabowdid!
“We’re not going to be friends.”
Bet that’s a relief to the coffee machine.
“This is a STEWPID coffee machine”
lets face it, its ALWAYS entertaining when a master of some sort reviews cheap crap and tells everything bad about it while most of the viewers have no idea what hes talking about. I learned more about how coffeemachines should work in this video than ever before
I learned why my dad's old espresso machine never worked for me. I thought I was the problem. (I was not.)
Yeah, including what's wrong with my own espresso machine - the same problem actually
A lot of people are missing the point here - this isn't snobbery, the machine literally doesn't work to make espresso and will end up in the bin. When he says get a Mokka pot... I paid:
£120 for a Wilfa grinder
£40 for a Bialetti induction
£40 for a (nice) Lavazza milk foamer
= £200
You can get a MUCH better setup for making a little mokka-pot latte and still have money left over to buy some Hario scales and a V60 so you can have lovely pourover too. Or you could probably squeeze in a good hand grinder and a picopresso or a basic Flair for that money if you insist on espresso.
I don't particularly have an affinity for coffee, nor have I ever shopped for any coffee machines, yet for some reason I was recommended this video and I am very glad I watched it.
But now you know how to properly roast a product or even a person that you don't like 😂 😂
As someone who deal with cheap coffee machines on occasion and a technician for industrial machinery... Did you try making a shot the way a person who shops at Aldi and buys the machine would do it? just grinding until its to the max fill line and pulling a shot without measuring? (aka follow the "instructions") I would like a quick follow up video to see is those results differ at all. I think you are too good at making coffee and you cast unrealistic expectations on that little machine! Remember design intent, you are not the intended buyer. So pretend you are and see what happens??? Btw I just started watching your channel and I think its great, I had a theory about regrinding coffee as noted in another video of yours so I tried feeding beans in very slowly and WOW what a difference.
Cheers!
Yeah-what I was thinking. No weighing, no looking at the bars, just grind and go. Lol.
the problem with that is that it still doesn't produce half decent espresso
@@playgroundprotagonis but we don't know until he tries it for science!
He already made a bad espresso with it, "as intended".
I also wonder if the problem of overpressuring cannot be mitigated by not compressing the ground coffee as much with the tamper - the coffee will not create as much resistance and therefore the pressure wouldn't go as high. It is the same principle - they possibly did not expect the user to compress it as much.
I'd for sure take the machine haha, I've got a couple things I feel could have been tried to see if it would make a better cup... You could grind a little finer and then don't tamp it quite so hard (might not have the pressure issue as you were) I also feel if you had the machine facing towards you, you would be able to not spill after grinding
So surprised about the like to dislike ratio. When James Hoffmann talks down on something, it really means it's something you should never use your own dime on it.
Maybe people got confused: They dislike the product rather than the review.
@@MalteForstat exactly

For all of Aldi’s hilarity- I must say around here, they were the first to have mitigation strategies in place to protect their employees and customers when SARS-CoV-2 arrived.
Looks exactly like a Breville Espresso Machine. I have a Breville looks almost identical to that machine, except my Breville grinder is separate from the machine. It really did take some practice grinds to get it inside the pressure zone. At first it was frustrating though. So I had to chuckle at the fact it looked as if you were going to throw it across the room.
He did say, “Buy a Sage”. Sage is the alternative branding of Breville and apparently it’s light years ahead of this machine
Yeah, Sage = Breville
