  • We dive into the unbelievable and unlikely history behind the quietest technology giant of them all: the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Founded in 1987 by the then-56 year old Morris Chang, already a legend in the semiconductor industry by virtue of his meteoric rise and fall at Texas Instruments, TSMC today manufactures nearly all the leading-edge chips for Nvidia, Apple, Broadcom, Qualcomm, AMD, and yes - even Intel. Tune in for an incredible story of innovation, perseverance and lasers. Lots and lots of lasers!
    Note: this is a remastered version of our original 2021 episode. We don’t often re-release old episodes, but in this case we have a very timely reason for doing so. Stay tuned! :)

    You guys were having so much fun back then.
    Having listened to the MSFT episode, I did know the answer to the pop quiz at 40:48.I’m sure current Ben would have nailed it

    I watched it again and realized there is so much that i forgot from last time. Now that David and Ben have covered NVIDIA three times and TSMC (sort of) twice, and so much content on ASML. Is there any chance of doing a dedicated ASML show?

    Taiwan at the time her government was called Republic of China whose president was Cgiang Ching Guo, a son of Chiang Kai Se. it was Chianf Ching Guo whose minister of Economy was T.T. Lee who put up investment and hired Morris Chanf to create and run TSMC in 1987. Republic of China R.O.C. still owns 40% of TSMC.

    I would have loved to learn more about how dsmc hopped over its rivals. What things and strategies did they employ to LeapFrog over Samsung and Intel?

    Great! Two comments. Kilby and Noyce would shared the Nobel but Noyce passed. By time IBM was thinking about the PC, Motorola was IBM's biggest semi supplier. IBM picked the 8086 family over Mot 68000. Everyone knew the 68000 was better (Sun, Apple, etc.) But it was too close to the 360 architecture. Plus MOT didn't have the 8 bit pin out yet while the 8088 did making a cheaper product.

    1:49 thats not true. The headquarters of Amazon, Broadcom, Tesla and Berkshire Hathaway are also not located on the West Coast of the U.S. They all have a market cap of over 1 trillion.

    In this interview, unfortunately, the company's culture and management were not discussed. A high yield rate is the lifeline of semiconductor manufacturing. Apart from the mastery of advanced manufacturing technologies, TSMC's high yield rate is primarily distinguished from its competitors by the company's culture and management.

    Another interesting tidbit is that Morris’s wife is cousins with Terry Gou, the founder of Foxconn which assembles iPhones too! Some people say that the relation may have played a part in helping establish TSMC’s relationship with apple

      @@ryannieh7023 if you checked acquired's latest video, Morris said Terry Guo brought vice president of Apple to his house for dinner. Apple showed interest of doing biz with tsmc during dinner time

      Mr. Chan talked about this in their most recent podcast, Terry called his wife that he's coming over to their home for dinner with an Apple VP, that's where they got started

      @ I don’t think that’s true. Back in 2004, Foxconn was the manufacturer of Motorola’s RAZR V3, which was a big seller at that time. Foxconn did not need Chang’s introduction to get business from Apple, and actually it was quite the opposite.

    • @rchen1494
      @rchen1494 2 дня назад

      @ the other way around. Foxconn Terry introduced Apple VP to Chang. Terry brought him to Chang's house for dinner. But I think Apple is ready to talk to tsmc at the time (2010 & 2011) bcz they went straight to the point at dinner time

    MOS is pronounced like "moss" not like "moz." No one familiar with the industry pronounces it like "moz." If they do, you know immediately they are not in or familiar with the industry. It's like someone who pronounces DRAM like the single-syllable word "cram" instead of the two-syllable "dee-ram." You know immediately they aren't actually familiar with the industry and certainly aren't in it. The guy who is behind the RUclips channel Asianometry is one such person, but he mispronounces many terms of the art. Which is pretty ridiculous.
