We want to share our passion for efficient, sustainable homesteading that brings the family together. On our homestead we do chemical-free gardening, grass-fed milk and beef, pastured eggs and broiler chickens, and free range children :) We love to go on adventures as a family, so if we're not workin on the farm, we're probably hiking or out getting ice cream. We're all into DIY, and being inventive and creative. We believe in homesteading that's sustainable, not just sustainable homesteading. In other words, we want to show you that homesteading doesn't have to wear you out to the point that you give it up. We've seen it happen, and almost came to that point ourselves. So go ahead and take a whack at that subscribe button if you'd like to join us on this crazy ride. Get ready to learn and be inspired! - Развлечения
Raspberries are currently $8 for 250g in Australia - non organic. You’d need armoured guards on your basement here 😂
Hey guys - great idea growing your own beans - I do it every year and it's a completely hands off crop (in fact, the first year I grew them, I just, as an experiment, threw a handful of store bought black beans into a bed and they grew prolifically, and I saved my own seeds from then on and they grew just as well).. Note, however, if you're planning on filling up that 5 gallon bucket with your own home grown beans, you'll need to grow a field worth. It takes a lot of beans to fill a bucket up.
Yes! I was so excited to grow black beans last season. I planted six plants to see how they would do. My total yield was two cups. lol. But it was still exciting to grow them and I'll definitely grow them again, using last year's crop as seed.
Thanks for the tips!
I threw some black eyed peas into our baby food forest for ground cover last year, and they grew so much that I had to be careful to keep them from choking out the berries and trees! Hilariously, I don’t even like eating black eyed peas, they were just super cheap. 😂
Love your video! I love how you add a little "intro" to the different sections - opening the door, walking down the stairs, Michelle talking at the beginning... it's so good :) Love your content too :)
Thanks April!
I loved seeing your beautiful preserved food. You mentioned once that you grew your garden on one-eighth of an acre and the quantities of fruit and vegetables you harvested is amazing. How reassuring to know that regardless of what goes on around you, you can feed your family so well. Thanks for the video, I look forward to them each week.
It is a great feeling. Good to hear from you Sherrie!
As a mom who has been homeschooling and growing food for years, I want to say I love your content. I always learn something new or get inspired to try harder.
I wish my husband and I had the knowledge and the the goals you have when we were married thirty years ago. But it is such a joy to see our daughters growing up and surpassing us in all their skills and knowledge.
And..because we have a big family, we have the added benifit of continuing to learn while some of our girls are still home.
Just wanted to say here that it's fun to see you have eight girls. We have nine girls (and three boys). You don't come across many others with so many girls. Love it!
Sounds like you're doing just fine, mama 🤗
11:40 Michelle you crack me up 😂 love seeing you guys keep things light and authentic
You two impress this Grandma so. Love your food storage. Your kids are so blessed.
Thank you 😊❤️
Yorkshire pudding is like dutch baby volcano pancakes😂😂
An idea : make instant mashed potatoes, or a sauce thickener, by boiling potatoes, mashing and drying them, powder them once dry. Freeze if unsure. Rehydrate in hot milk for mashed potatoes. Kids can do it. If you make sheppards pie. To have a lighter load sometimes...
What a great idea!
It’s so nice that you have extended family that you can share with. Community is so important.
Thank you both for all you teach through your channel! You are both so positive and inspiring!
Thanks Catherine!
We love dutch babies! They're a great way to use a plethora of eggs AND fruit. And you're right, it never gets old watching them puff.
So much fun 😊
Migraines can be an idication of magnesium deficiency. I am a 3rd gen sufferer. I got a high dose mag and no longer have migraines like i used to & i had them a LOT. 30 mins in bright light areas and i had a 3 day migraine.
In regards to tapping a neighbor’s maple tree, you could maybe barter with them. We like using bartering as currency.
I love making big batches of mashed potatoes and freezing in serving size portions! Quick heat and eat side dish! Taste just like freshly made. I have also ground some of my roasts into burger if we run out!
I have recently found your channel and have been loving the videos. I was raised on a farm and my Daddy raised Hereford beef cattle. We always raised a big garden, and we had chickens for laying and some for eating. We raised rabbits and we always had a hog to fatten and eat. My Daddy hunted and fished. Some of your videos take me back to those good times. I am old now and I am constantly amazed at how much some of my friends don't know about animals and gardening. I feel my education on the farm was just as important as my education in school was. Bless your sweet family.
Thanks for your kind words. So glad to hear this is bringing up fond memories. ❤️
You can make mashed potatoes and freeze. When you thaw and heat they come out as good as you just made them. I make a big batch an freeze in single portions.
Guys, watch The Rancher and The Wife. You will love it! For the whole family. God bless you all
Definitely your videos are getting better with importing some bloopers…live that! Religiously follow your channel. I’m trying to get my canning and food storage similar to yours.
Thank you!
I am a 66 yr old gardening grandma. It seems we are on the same schedule of an abundance of tomato products. I am only planting two plants. I am learning from your channel. I am most interested in the Lady Finger popcorn. A video on planting to harvest and when to harvest would be most helpful. The demo on the pancakes was amazing. I also have tons of strawberries and black berries I need to use up. I don't know if I missed it but I thought you were going to show how you made your smoothies with your berries? I am new to smoothies. Thanks for your great content. Btw...LOVE the bloopers! Keepin it real.
I make smoothies a lot. I use almond milk, but you could use any type of milk. I add 1/4 c of rolled oats, a T of flaxseed meal, a banana, a splash of vanilla, and about a cup of any frozen fruit. It makes a delicious quick breakfast that you can take out to the garden with you! My grandson loves “smoovies” too! 😊
I use plain or lemon yogurt, 2 or 3 kinds of fruit & juice to make our smoothies, doing it for over 25 yrs & very yummy. Just toss in your berries, or if lots to use up you can layer into an oatmeal crisp, easily frozen or served hot out of oven with milk, yogurt or home-made whipped cream. Huge hit with the kids, esp as breakfast on cold days.
Good to have you on the channel! ❤️ So glad it's been encouraging for you.
I had a good chuckle now. 😂 So people think you have secret tunnels??? Well if you think about it you actually do. It is not so secret but you have a basement and root seller. 😂
My husband and i grew over 400 pounds of potatoes last season. We've shared them with our daughter who lives next door to us, friends who live in the city, etc. We still have about 50 pounds of potatoes that we'll be able to plant in May and still have potatoes to eat until the next harvest.
Wowza! Go Tina!
We eat those 'pancakes' with our dinner but call them Yorkshire pudding
You guys are awesome keeping the American dream alive Live self sufficient and debt free
I loved it when you said you are savoring the last moments of winter! This is exactly how I feel. I love being in the garden and going all the things, but the slow winter months are definitely something to savor.
So true. It's a sweet time. ❤️
I live your channel!!! It's so down to earth and relatable. Plus: learning a lot. 🕊️🍀🕊️
That's great to hear. So glad to have you around!
Thanks for the great videos!
If you have too many beef roasts just take the ones you like the least. Cut in slices semi frozen and put through a meat grinder. Make your own burger. Can get a decent sized electric grinder for couple hundred. We done this method for over 10 year.
Make burger with the cuts your not using. Also can grind up freezer burnt stuff for dog food.
Kitchenaid makes a meat grinding attachment for their mixer too.
A meat grinder would be awesome.
I highly recommend trying dehydrating veggies and fruit. Its a bit less work than canning and takes a lot less storage space. I do this with tomatoes, green beans, fruit, and garlic. I make pizza sauce rehydrating herbs tomatoes and garlic, throw anything in soup, green beans rehydrate in a pot of water easy, fruit becomes snacks and you can even use a blender to make dried extra greens, squash, or berries into nutritional powders. It has been a game changer. Plus fruit leather is a great snack.
Great tips!
Follower from Denmark here 👏🏼 love your videos and great inspiration😃
Awesome! Thank you!
Okay okay. It's a no cell phone day for my husband and I, but he agreed, new video from you guys, is an exception 😍(my husband's name is Cody as well(spelt different obv)😂
It doesn't count as screen time if you're learning about gardening, right?? Of course!! 😂
You could soak the carrots in bone broth and flash freeze them on cookie sheet on parchment paper. Then put them gallon freezer size bags. I give them to my two labs as a cold treat. Our puppies love them.
my variety potatoes-BERNINA,MONTANA,JELLY,LAURA,RANOMI,MADELEINE,BALLERINA and late blight resistant TWISTER,TVINNER,ALOUETTE,AGOSTINO.Hi from Czechia in middle Europe.Good luck in life and work on farm.
I love a Dutch baby pancake! Such a great way to use up eggs and you’ve got great advice! My recipe is grain and dairy free and it puffs up nicely:
1/3 cup coconut oil
8 eggs
1 cup coconut or almond milk (I use coconut milk)
1/3 cup arrowroot or tapioca flour
1/4 cup coconut flour
1/2 tsp salt
Preheat oven to 425, with cast iron & oil while batter is mixed. Blend eggs for 15 sec, add other ingredients and blend for another 30 seconds. Bake 20-24 min
I use arrowroot flour, which subs nicely for corn starch in recipes as well and is grain free. I also make a berry sauce but I just cook it up with a splash of water and let it reduce a bit. I do add a tsp of vanilla to the Dutch baby and I reduce the coconut oil by the amount of ghee I use as a butter substitute. Ghee is okay to use for dairy free. I don’t have a good source for raw milk or I’d just use that to be honest. I have to be careful of what kind of dairy products I have unfortunately
I can’t remember if you can meet or not but it’s a really good way to use some of those roasts and have something on the shelf for a quick stroganoff or roast beef sandwich or even tacos. Can also use it in chili or soups. It will always be four tender and your kids will have time because you just can it in small one inch chunks. It will also open your freezers space or anything else you want to put in there and get it ready for your next beef
I am a new subscriber and have just recently found and started enjoying your videos. I am a part-time homesteader in Texas and have about 5 years of homesteading and gardening experience. I highly recommend that you guys buy a freeze dryer. You can preserve for the long term the things (like raspberries) that you are running out of space for. Love your channel and have so much enjoyed watching your videos the past few days!
Welcome aboard, Laura! ❤️
Love the sound of the spring peepers,
What a beautiful pantry! You have worked so hard. I am so impressed! God bless! Val C
Volcano pancakes is clearly the actual name of that recipe! Hahah
Right?! 😂
So glad your family and homestead are okay!
Live your store! It totally feeds my need for ocd organization!
Run some lesser roasts through the grinder to get hamburger if the already ground meat runs out?
I had to do that last year so this year we adjusted our ground beef order when processing. It worked out pretty well last year though grinding roasts.
Yeah.. we have a grinder.. just don't feel like goin through the extra work 😏
👍 video. Best for the week ❤
Hi, I buy a side of beef every year and when I run oiut of burger meat, I use my kichenaid with the grinder attachment to grind my own . I have also used the food processor to chop up raw meat into small enough chunks to do the same thing. The key is to have the meat a wee bit frozen. You guys are living my dream life.
Sounds like a handy tool!
You must be so proud of your family to see all the work bottled up in beautiful jars of food!! Well done!!!
It is a pretty awesome feeling. 😁
Blessings!
You guys are very inspiring
We always eat the potatoes too until the sprouts are more than an inch or so. Its usually squishy by then anyway. You are both so organized. Its inspiring. I still have to remember to shop my pantry first. I'm almost there. Happy growing!
We started canning some of our potatoes last year and they came out Awesome. Nice setup.
Have you ever tried to can your potatoes to keep from loosing them.
Hahaha Michelle! I loved your little outtakes in this 😅😂 “we’re not preepers!” … proceeds to tell everyone about mentioning all your year’s supply of meat ready in the freezers. Love this humor
Maybe you could plant some Maple trees for future use, even if they came into their prime for your kids or future owners of the land
😂😂😂😂 I love the channel ! I'm not sure if you guys realize, but ya'll are completely hilarious without trying to be- And she deadpans "I'm just gonna shut up from here..." 😂
Awesome 💯
😂 Glad you're enjoying.
I love you guys….so down to earth. The cutest couple ever🥰🥰
I wish I had those carrot to make carrot juice . That is soo good !
Thanks love the channel
Hey! Although you didnt order enough burger, please dont forget you can always defrost and grind up the cuts you wont need much of! ❤
True!
I made Dutch babies this morning and my 5 year old was sitting the whole time in front of the oven watching them puff up 😂 I do use whole wheat pastry flour so they didn’t puff up as much as yours. I’m definitely gonna make the berry syrup next time! Looks amazing!
Fabulous.... You can always barter off your excess produce locally, that's a win-win.
Nice vid guys! I too have tons of tomato products left and I really think I'll only grow a few plants this year. Same with potaoes, yellows stored so much better for us. I have tons canned up and honestly don't know what to do with them all! Yesterday I mashed two pots full and froze them in single servings for me because hubby is always watching his carbs. It's a process 🥴
I recommend frying the green beans in butter or bacon fat and eating them with scrambled eggs for breakfast - you won't be dissapointed!
Love from Ontario!
If you have diced bell peppers in your freezer you could dice up onions and make some pre baked breakfast potatoes and freeze it. It makes such a quick breakfast that way
We live in Florida, so the water table is much too high for a root cellar or basement. Nobody has those here. This year, we are taking some inspiration from y’all, and turning our walk-in pantry into a cold room. Investing in a mini split (probably) just for that room, and planning to keep it cool year round. Yes, the electricity cost will be annoying, but so is having potatoes that only last a month. 😅
Woohoo, let us know how it goes!
Black beans are fun and easy! I like to grow them also!
We always have too much canned green beans and tomato products on the shelves every year. She said, "You DON'T need 25 tomato plants!" --- "But there are new things I gotta try out dear!" The last straw was her telling me to get out from under the bed and fight like a man. Anyway, tell that 'I'm not a white kinda girl' hi. That was funny! 🙂
😂
I know what they are talking about with sprouted potatoes. I was raised on them too!!!! I’m 59 but due to gut issues I’ve since learned they put you at risk for potential toxicity from solanine and chaconine when they have root sprouts.
Love your show! I’ve watched most TWICE!
I just found your channel. I’m obsessed.
We water bath our potatoes! For three hour so amazing when we open them jar rince them well ppl will tell u not to water bath ! I learn this from old school ! AMD Amish here in Canada ❤
The Amish really are a wealth of practical information. Thanks for sharing, Carmen!
You all are WONDERFUL!
Awwww 🥰
I quarter or cube by potatoes. Add oil and spices and freeze them (raw). I then bake or air fryer them from frozen. They turn out great! *do not thaw*
Yum 🤤😋
I plant an area of 100 ft by 50 ft garden with beans , one year it's black beans the next year it is kidney then black beans again. I agree I feel spoil having the pantry with food in it.
You guys are so inspiring!!! Great video!! I must try those Dutch baby pancakes! I often male egg pancakes (eggs, milk, flour, s&p).
We saved our own potatoes this year so hopefully it will be ok lol 😊
You got this!
I’m having trouble with my beef burger ratio too something we learned from it- roast, slow cook other cuts and have shredded beef tacos, barbecued sandwiches, quesadillas, you can make ahead and freeze in portions for quick meals. If you like fresh fruit drinks we love our whole frozen strawberries blended with lemon juice and sweetener our strawberries disappear too fast 😮
Spring is also hinting its arrival here in the midlands of the U.K. I’m so excited and ready! Thank you for your helpful videos… if possible, can you put in a link for your video on sourdough bread? I watched it but can’t find it 😢 It’s okay if you can’t ❤
Sorry it took so long.. here it is: ruclips.net/video/5VsRCmJZ2d0/видео.htmlsi=9FqUvIkBqTD3TElD
Not that you asked for advice buuut I’ve had migraines for 20 years along with neck pain. I started taking Mary Ruth’s adrenal support and I’ve been migraine free for 4 months ❤️ hope that helps!!
Thanks for the tip! So glad to hear you are healing ❤️
I absolutely love your channel and look forward to it every weekend. I hope that you and yours were not affected by the storms in Ohio this week.
Glad to hear we can add some anticipation to your week 😁. Doing all right 👍
Will you do a video on the teas? I’m new to tea and apple mint sounds good ❤
So inspiring!! I love it! Thank you for helping me find my passion again! ♥
Our pleasure, Shirley!
Your videos are...what's the phrase? ... so mature and professional! I can not say how proud I am of you all! ❤️ I love your channel. I had some potatoes that were a little worse for wear, but I feel confident after watching your video! Thank you for sharing! God is good 🙏
Thank you so much!
We grow black turtle beans
They are as simple to grow as a green beans, just need to dry on
plant and then shell..
We only grow 9 rows 30' long we get 5 gal pail+
And they are fun to shell in winter
Wow! That's awesome!
Impressive food storage.
“Dutch baby pancakes”… those are walls of Jericho!! 😅
11:23 😂😂😂 like this part
Btw you are so good at storing your produce, hope I could do that too
once again nice work guys. only a month before we move onto our 5 acres. we are loving your harvesting and canning info clips. Keep up the good work.
Good luck and congrats!
well done guys :)
Just found your channel, been watching your videos all day, new subscriber and fellow homesteaders!
Woohoo! Welcome to the channel! Hope your year is off to a great start!
“I’m not a white girl person” was the funniest thing I heard today! 🤣 We tried pinto beans last year and were surprised how many plants it takes to grow enough beans when you leave them on the plant to dry. We don’t have enough room to grow as many as we would need. And we love beans!
🥴😝😂
I found your channel after searching 1/10th acre homestead (summer 2023), and you've been so beneficial to my steps towards homesteading. So realistic and encouraging to see someone my age (i assume 😅) with similar ideals. Thanks 🥰 from the Finger Lakes region in NY.
You're welcome! Glad to have you on the channel ❤️
There’s something to be said for preserving two years worth of something every other year. That way you can cut way back on half your garden crops each year and focus on larger volumes of the half that you will be preserving. Thanks for your inspirational content. It helps to keep this old woman going. 😉
You guys are just so inspiring. Seriously. I'm doing more and more on my small homestead each season in Alberta, in no small part because of you.
Awwww, that's wonderful to hear. Hope your year is off to a wonderful start! 😁
😍another video full of good tips and tricks. I'm also very grateful that we still have so much canned goods in the cellar, but I'm running out of potatoes. I had to fight with Colorado potato beetles last year, so I didn't harvest much. too bad because I'm a potato girl... Thank you for your time and your support to learn, you are the best.
You're welcome! Every year is different for us with potatoes, but this year was a good one!
Yall are our favorite ❤❤❤
Awwww ❤️
sick electronic drumset!
Lol, thanks! 😂
We call dutch baby pancakes "Hootenanny" in our house ;)
Dry canned potatoes are an amazing way to preserve potatoes! It’s my “fast food”
Hi! Thanks for the video! By the way, carrots don't grow if you cut the place that gives sprouts (0,5-1 cm). I was afraid to do that, but yes, they don't grow any more, start with, for example, 1-2 bags to compare how they behave compared to those which are not cut ;) To store - the same way - in bags.
Day 20 of living on a farm...Watching this whilst i clean my new basement pantry, preparing it to unpack all our food that is currently in our garage. This house was built ìn 1940. Pretty certain this is not its first basement pantry.
Sounds like somebody's on an adventure! Best of luck with your new farm!
I tapped a Maple tree on our property for the first time this year. Unfortunately I got it in a bit too late so I didn't get much sap. I also didn't have a proper bucket, so all kinds of debris and rain/snow got into what I did tap. Hoping to be more on my game next year. As far as your ground beef, you should invest in a cheap meat grinder. You can grind your own cuts when you get low on the preground stuff.
Props for trying, Tom. You'll have to let us know how it goes next time!
Thank you for responding. We are visiting family in South Carolina and I found a chocolate mint plant. One down one to go!
Woohoo!
We LOVE dutch baby pancakes AKA German Pancakes.... Becky at Ache Homestead has an awesome recipe ❤
I live in South West Michigan and I'm old enough to be both of you guys parents. I just want to tell you how excited I get when I see a new video posted.
So good to hear 😊
Good video! Most would call us preppers, but I prefer to think of it as a way of life. Alot of similarities although I prefer to have 2 years worth of x, y, z in the freezer and on the shelf because you never know what the garden year could bring. A person could get a hail storm that wipes out their garden and such. The 2 - 3 years takes some of the pressure off I find. I laughed pretty hard at the flour comments...lol. Have you tried letting the whole wheat dutch babies sit for 5 or 10 minutes after mixing and then giving a quick stir before baking...just so it can absorb a bit and thinking it will stop the separation.! They looked delicious.
