- It is a story revolving around two childhood lovers Shankar and Bhawariya who have been parted by unfortunate circumstances. Shankar's cousin Suresh is an advocate. When marriage proposals are brought up, Suresh and Shankar decide to meet the respective brides by proxy. Suresh falls in love with Madhumati and cooks up a wicked plot. But then Shankar comes to know that Madhumati is Bhawariya, the girl whom he used to love. In a rift between Shankar and Suresh, Suresh dies accidentally for which Shankar is held the culprit. What happens to Shankar then? Watch the movie.

Off late I am watching Hindi films as I am from nonhinding speaking state. I never thought dharmendra is such a sensitive actor. I watched Anupama and films before 1970s. All the actors are showing the feelings in eyes. Even dancing of Ashaparekh, waheeda,. Mala Sinha are so great, I do see divinity in their dance but not any glamour. Humour is so great with words devoid of useless shouts and beatings which they are nowadays showing in regional films.why films are getting prevented? No one is liking but they are still made.

DEVAR is a marvelous movie with wonderful songs. Presence of Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore is a bonus.
We always want Happy ending but this ending is best the film title is Devar, how they respect each other's, everything is not so easy we sacrificed that is greatness of this film adopted by Bengali novelist

Though I did not like the end, I love watching this movie, watched several times. Dharmendra is looking extremely handsome and also great acting by him. I think Sharmila looked very beautiful in this movie, one of her best.

Well.. Off course very less people understand such movies. You think it's love story... But they have shown much more powerful connection of 2 souls... Though they were never together as a partner but she was really the angel for him.
U defined that connection in an easy way.
It’s annoying to see such handsome Dharmendra being put through so main pain and unnecessary guilt. It was a drag on. The hero suffers through the entire movie and only wins when movie ends. Sad writers.

I wonder how some people can so dispassionately write about such pasionate feature films. They seem to be sitting in judgment over every minute detail of the film. It appears, looking to their authoritative comments, as to why such people do not make even greater films themselves. It is very easy to find fault with even great ideas, artists, directors, lyricists and singers. It is astounding to note, that, one of the persons who has written a long narrative, condemns the two milestone songs written by Anand Baxi, composed by Roshan and rendered by Mukesh. This film has, when made history in the domain of literature and performing arts and has moulded the youth of many generations in the groves of idealism, it is shocking, that, the commentator takes every liberty for criticizing it by taking exception to almost everything and tries to substitute the wisdom of the writer and the director by his own. In fact, the film brilliantly depicts the war between morality and immorality, the truth and reality and the destiny and sacrosanctity and also the helplessness of the chastity at the same time. It cannot be overlooked, that, although Suresh is the epicentre of the tragedy, Shankar is its victim. As a result, the director has rightly avoided to showcase the romance between an evildoer who is guilt-borne and his bride whom he has married stealthily. The director is fully justified in concentrating on showing the devastation of innocent Shankar and his oppression from all sides even from his own parents. Salutations must be offered to the novelist Bandopaddhyay, director Mohan Segal, Dharmendra and all the coactors for bringing out such a marvellous and legendary feature film.
