Sara Tucholsky Home Run/ESPY Sportsmanship Moment

  • When Western Oregons Sara Tucholsky hit a three-run shot over the fence against Central Washington on April 26, 2008, her round-tripper gave the Wolves a lead and it also went into the books as the first career home run for the senior outfielder.
But after injuring her knee rounding first, she needed help to make the complete circuit around the bases. In stepped CWUs Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace, who carried the hobbled Tucholsky around the diamond in an amazing gesture of sportsmanship.

Five years after your comment - fifteen years since the event - I’m emotional, too. What a glorious outcome to a exceptional-cum-tragic event.
I’ve watched this video many times to buoy my flagging spirit in humankind. It never fails me.

I've seen this clip many times over the years and I'll tell you... as a grown man who's pretty cynical... this story never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
Can't even begin to put into words how enormously impressed I am by the two young women on the opposing team.
I honestly think this is one of the great sports stories of all time. Give me this over bloated steroid junkie overpaid major leaguers any day of the week..

I don't care how many times I've seen it, it still brings me to tears each time. I shared this video with everybody I know, and on Social Media. You should too. Those two young ladies who went beyond the team grudge and beyond what everyone would think, even though that by doing that, they LOST the game, just shows the integrity and humanity that everyone in this world should have.
This message portrays that no matter what the consequence is, doing the right thing will always prevail. Good sportsmanship is the best thing that sports can ever teach us.
Share this with everyone and anyone you can! Make a difference. Humanity still has hope.

My daughter's team played a team last weekend where the coach should be made to watch this video 8000 times a day. THIS is what softball should be like, and the fact the opposing coach was emotional and proud of his girls for carrying the player, is just spectacular.

Sportsmanship at it's best! Way to go girls. This story needs to be made into a movie. And all kids in sports should watch this video and take something from it. The final score isn't always the whole story. Winning in life is done so by being noble and kind, not by a score. Again, well done girls. Makes me proud to be a father and coach of a softball team.

While yes this is a charming story, I can't help but point out that according the the NCAA Softball Rules in 2008 the substituted player should have been allowed to touch the awarded bases
(Rule 8.5.3.2 If an injury to a batter-runner or runner prevents her from proceeding to an awarded base, the ball is dead and substitution may
be made. The substitute must legally touch all awarded or missed
    bases not previously touched.)

One of the greatest human qualities is having the ability to feel for someone else. It's called compassion. It comes naturally for most but obviously not all. I hope you can learn it some day. Actually I am an athlete, however at least you broke your ankle during a play. Sara tore her ACL on a HOME RUN hit. She could crawl the bases if she wanted to. I'm not hating because I'm supposedly "missing out" or because she got injured, I hate because Sara got an ESPY and is receiving most of the credit for sportsmanship when she didn't do shit. The other girls did that. I respect all Sports Athletes unless they begin to take credit for shit they don't do. And know me before you insult me.
