  • A brilliant evening rush hour session spent at Banbury on the Chiltern Mainline where we see plenty of services from Chiltern Railways, Great Western Railway, Cross Country and freight from GBRF, Freightliner, DB Cargo UK and Colas Rail.
    Banbury station was first known as Banbury Bridge Street and was built in September 1850 by the London and Northwestern Railway. This was only achieve because the local land was sold to several investors who then granted the railway company the rights to build the station. This station had been planned to be apart of the Oxford to Rugby line, however that never took place due to the gauging issues that would've been faced when the trains reached rugby.
    However the line from Banbury to Oxford still remained and now is part of the branch line that links the Chiltern Mainline to the Great Western Mainline. The line had started out as a single track but was doubled only 2 years later, this was due to the increasing popularity of the line, at that time it also meant that Banbury was getting an upgrade. It had received a new platform suited towards up and down running and an additional goods loop on the eastern side of the station, located where the train shed used to stand. The station used to have 2 bay platforms facing north and south but was cut into a through platform in 1903 for greater ease of running. The various goods loops were installed to deal with the traffic that would come off at the Banbury north junction from the Great Central Mainline, this is now a duel track heritage line in the Midlands. Banbury station was at one point to be considered the most vital station on the British network, and this was because nearly every single express passenger service running from the north of the country to the South would go through this section of the line including the: Aberdeen to Penzance express, South Wales, Ports to Ports Express as well as sleeper trains running for, Newcastle to Southampton via Manchester Piccadilly, during the early 1900's near all of the cross country services would pass through and stop at Banbury.
    My next rush hour film will be Welwyn North on the East Coast Mainline.

    Wouldn't be a Tornado922 video on the Chiltern Mainline without 68 010 turning up. What a legend of a driver as well. Fantastic video

    'The fresh air express' - love it.
    I note that the Banbury planning authorities didn't burden themselves unduly with aesthetic considerations when planning the station and its surrounds. A lovely view of the car park for passengers waiting for their trains.

    Wow, haven't really explored the Chiltern Mainline network but it does look grand for all the variety. Dam, do miss those thrashing sounds of the class 68's. Scarborough is way too quiet now.
    In case you didn't know: The former MK5 stock is now owned by Breckon Rail and stored at Long Marsden. Now, they still do transfer between Long Marsden to Longsight for maintenance every 5 weeks or so. The class 68's are now back branded to DRS as well. Earlier in the year, Chiltern Railways placed a bid on the MK5 stock but Breckon Rail declined it.
    Only time will tell for what will happen :-)

      @Tornado922  17 дней назад

    I often wonder why they run an empty train to one place, while at the same time another empty train is going from that one place to somewhere else - why can they not send the empty to the somewhere else location in the first place, thus reducing by one the number of stock movements and loco's needed - or is that too easy?

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  17 дней назад

      I would have to say that would be far to easy

    Honestly Chiltern needs to get new rolling stock, they can't rely on what 40/45 year old stock forever, they should invest in newer stock like the 195s that Northern has or the brand new 196 or 197s with West Mids/TfW respectively, 231s are an option as well despite being quite ugly imo but they would make for probably a more comfortable ride for those Birmingham services, if they went for the 196/197s it would make their fleet easy to service as well instead of relying on knowledge of out of date turbostars, really the entire Chiltern Mainline needs to be electrified and a new operator taking over the company and investing some much needed money into it, they could even go for 802s and run them as diesels for the time being like GWR do on some routes

    • @merlintransport
      @merlintransport Месяц назад

      They have hinted about it, but it could be a while, and will probably happen before electrification, if that ever happens. And now, it'll all be (likely) fully nationalized within the next five years.
