you are such a great help. I had documents lined up, papers strewn out and a game plan for getting my rg351v rocking headless. but here you come and make it so insanely easy to get going. I literally just had to drag and drop. Thanks to you, it all just works. I got to update everything, and i'm running on the newest version of m8.
Thank you for the tutorial! I really don’t like to take my precious expensive m8 outside, this is a really nice substitute. It worked nicely with an usbc tplink Ethernet dongle.
Fun little project. I loved the void waranty step 😅 Is what it is, lol Worked well. Thanks for the instructions. But yeah, def doesn't replace the tru hardware, but it's still a fun diet option, lol. If you had a pre loaded model id have bought it in the link to save time haha. A missed sales opportunity
Thanks so much! I had choppy sound and graphics on my r33s at first. I did a fresh install of the arkos image from AeolusUX, and now it works great. How would I go about changing the quit command to use something other than the analog stick, as this device doesn’t have one? Thanks again!
You'll have to edit/make a config file and drop it into the home folder of M8C, you'll have to do this with the file manager on device after prepping the config on your desktop.
I’ve had this working thanks to your vid!! I had problems updating, if someone couldn’t update completely (some emulators not working) my problem was not staying too close to the router, a floor down. Staying close fixed it. Do you know how to make the EASYROMS folder reappear? Once the card is put back into the machine it makes the EASYROMS root folder disappear and I see only the other partition, this is where I launch m8 from. I tried all sorts of “drive name change” strategies ppl recommend, as well as partition fiddling but it stays invisible…
Thanks for the directions. I own an M8 and love it. I saw this video and thought, "it wouldn't hurt to have another one with limited features" Is there anything I need to do to save projects? I keep getting "FAILED TO CREATE DIRECTORY". Is this another feature that is unavailable?
m8 headless opened nicely via chrome but then i realized that my m8 headless teensy is absolutely empty of and samples ,synths, or demo tracks ,so it’s kind of pointless with out any sounds in it . Maybe i loaded m8 headless improperly to the teensy or something. it responds to keyboard commands fine though so it seems like i set it up correctly Did your version of m8 headless come with sounds in it already ? thanks
You can easily load your own samples onto the Teensy SD card. m8’s internal synths can also be used for sound design. M8 headless doesn’t come anything.
@@MetroGradeGoods yeah thanks ill try that . when you say m8’s internal synths are you referring to the actual m8 ? cause my m8 headless has no internal synths , unless im not seeing them in the load section or something.
@@redbirdsaraceno they are in where you make a new instrument, and the you can design your own Wavesynth or FM or whatever sound. There are no presets. You can find a community made pack of synths online. Easy to find.

I am not sure what you are asking. I think the last of the V1 M8's are out of production now. You can probably find some 2nd hand units here and there (lots of talk about it on the Discord). I am definitely not Tim.
@@MetroGradeGoodsno you misunderstood: I was looking for m8 at a site, it was (like you say) out of production. Then here you mention some “Tim” so I was hoping that there is some person other than the “out of production” site who actually does sell the m8 currently. Do you think there will be version 2 appearing? I just cannot find any other sequencer that can produce synth notes AND has the ability to shape every note of a sequence differently (if desired), just cannot think of any other (except LSDJ). Please let me know if there is another one like this, even if it’s hardware. All the ones I see are simply samplers and cannot shape a note separately in a drastic way…
In the mean time I think I’ll follow your method described here (I’m so grateful for the detailed description!). Is this Wifi dongle any special or just a regular one? This Linux game thing has no problem using this Wifi dongle without much configuration? I’m going to buy this console now. It seems like I can put my LSDJ and NITROTRACKER Roms into it. I hope the console has a built in microphone too..
@@RosssRoyce the wifi dongle is just a simple usb one (you may need a type c adaptor to be able to plug it in). Fairly simple :) hope it works for you.
@@MetroGradeGoods thanks! also PS the gentleman that makes the m8 (Tim L) just replied to my email, he plans on releasing version 2 of the m8, with USB C, around beginning to mid 2024. There is hope :D
I tried to remap buttons but I couldn't get the CONFIG.INI to take effect. Normally you would edit the button values. Y and X are too tight of a position to. use effectively.
@@MetroGradeGoods After some hours of testing: only the Nintendo games work, not all these: SuperNintendo, Nintendo Advanced, and DS. @@RosssRoyce I've never heard of that before, but you could probably just download the firmware again, or reformat the card and place the firmware files back on the card and start over. The controls on this machine are so bad that I would hate to play games on it.
@@MetroGradeGoods You are right, the controls are VERY stiff (especially on the long run) and clicky noisy! Thanks for the tip, do you think that online there is a place with the standard firmware?
@@MetroGradeGoods Whenever i hit play, It's not playing, it shows the play indicator but it doesn't move and there's no sound... Started facing the issue since i did the latest firmware update for Teensy. Was not having this issue earlier.
I bought this thing just to run m8c after seeing videos about it, but its been a royal pain in the ass so far. I can get the program running, but it runs like hot garbage and not usable. Maybe it needs to be a newer build. I have the latest ArkOS running, can connect to my teensy no problem, but the frame rate seems to be going at a glacier speed. Had the same results on the stock OS and after updating. The annoying thing is I know my way around linux, but the way this thing is cobbled together seems like a mess plus I can't just log into it with a keyboard and figure things out. The documentation is pretty bad, and information is often old. Somebody else made a stand alone image that works and plays fine, but then the screen is too dark to make it usable. I had to hack their image to put in the newer dtb file because there are different versions of the hardware.
After spending all that time and getting fed up with it, I went back and copied the directory I had onto my computer, ran the git commands to make sure I checked out the latest version and then rebuilt it. I did that option somebody mentioned to scan the directories so I can just go right to the commands. I ran the pulse setup first, and tried that version because I was curious, but then I went back and tried the m8 sh and that was working too so I guess rebuilding it from fresh git files fixed it. Sorry for the long posts, I was getting frustrated with this thing because I had doom based games working fine with the default OS setup and then updated it and that messed up too. On the Steam Deck I know what I am doing because I have shell access and can read documentation, so when you get a black box and no idea what its doing its annoying. hah
Because M8 firmware is written for Teensy, it's running on Teensy in the actual M8 and has never been attempted to run on any other hardware. When you run it headless you need a screen and controllers, a DAC and other bits of hardware, you can use a PC or a handheld device like this. The Teensy isn't the extra hardware, it's the part you always need.

It happened to me with a faulty or too slow SD
When you say "not as smooth" do you mean when it is running or just the install?
Install was easy, there are sometime ghost inputs or lag but a small price to pay.
wondering if you could mod the teensy to be inside the device so its not just hanging there.
I am working on a mount for the back/top portion of the unit. It's tricky because it gets so hot and the SD card still needs to be accessible.
