    This game looks cool. Definitely doesn't look like babby's first video game, the devs are competent. There has to be a random timer they can use for starting animations. All the models playing the same animation in the loadout screen looks weird. Even if they only ever make a single idol animation, if all the models begin at a different time it'd look a lot more natural. Also I like the idea of calculating hit chance by dynamically drawing a line between the characters. If you've ever played paintball or laser tag you know you don't need to be smushed all up in there to use cover, as long as it stands between you and the enemy it's cover.

    Oh man, this game has potential coming out of its ears!
    On the subject of comparing any turn based tactic game to XCOM, this game really highlights my biggest problem with XCOM 2, other than the shallow customization it suffered from, why would an enemy you surprised, that didn't know you were there, get a scramble turn into cover, just because one person shot? The premise was that my turn takes place as if everything happened simultaneously, so why do they just get to interrupt that simultaneous action, to jump into cover, forcing my entire team to either take reaction shots or shoot at them behind cover like the first guy jumped the gun every time lol

      Yeah, scramble turn was the mechanic I hated the most when playing XCOM 1. basically stealth and strategy was not a option.
      I kinda asumed they had pulled back on it in XCOM 2, with the surprise mechanic. But I will see how much they did when "Pete Complete" starts his series soon-ish.

      @@christopherg2347 They still scramble, but for many missions you enter under stealth and have much more control over when combat happens.

      @@christopherg2347 nah, for some reason, even entering a mission undetected, the aliens get a turn to scramble after your first shot, and if you set your people up well, they get overwatch shots, but thats still a penalty. I slways thought tac strategy games turns were supposed to take place as a simultaneous action, but apparently alien reaction times are faster than it takes for two people to pull their trigger lol.

    I would love to see this smushed together with Star Traders. I always thought that would be a way better game if there were some tactical options to gameplay like this, but the story is super good and there's a lot of depth to character development.

      Star Traders looks like it was designed for "Darkest Dungeon" style combat mechanic. Propably from the preceeding games. So that part can not realy change.
      But this game definitely does XCOm combat right.

      @@christopherg2347 Yeah, I loved Star Traders story and all of the character customization, and specializing in trading, espionage, smuggling, electronic warfare, etc. I really liked how when the ship gets damaged the crew gets injured when they're boarding. I would love those kind of elements in an Xcom style game space pirates game. I've never been really a big fan of Darkest Dungeon style combat though.

    I am always disappointed when I see a sci-fi game that does the usual cop outs.
    This universe has the tech level to make artificial gravity and super luminal flight but the basic personnel weapon is an M-4 and grenades.
    Zero G fights and directed energy weapons would make this more interesting than just another Xcom reskin.
    Using any kind of recoil producing weapon in zero G would be dangerous to the point of suicidal after all.

    Games will allways be compared because there are usualy a few options to choose from in each genre!...and as you mentioned...its in early acces!....and gamers have soooo much to choose from they are kinda spoiled nowadays!...great review!..thanks for sharing and keep it up mr splatt!

    Game looks very promising! I personally would rather your crew look more rag tag like actual pirates. I think it would give them more personality, sort of like that old school movie Ice Pirates. I also hope that the ship maps have more variation when the game is complete. Good stuff so far though!

      Good Point, I love that look! But according to the lore Splattercat showed, the Pirates are semi-professional, The Scavs are the ones who are a mishmash of random unprofessional riffraff. Both could have a more ragtag look. One solution I think we could have is Scavs have several subclasses, and they should be Hireable and able to be captured and forced to fight.

    Always interesting to see indie takes on these more ambitious, established formulas. With restrictions on resources can come innovation and creativity. Not to mention the people making this can also be fans and players of the genre, so they have things they love (and want to capture) and things they hate (and want to avoid/improve) about it. I am not one to buy potential, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on. With the right unique spins this could be a hidden gem, bringing something worthwhile to the genre.

    Animation is limited. And isn't random enough. Feels like 1 soldier copy and pasted. Also audio. Atmospheric audio. Voice acting. Music. Bit meh. But there's potential. In a year or two.

    Idk, derelict ships can't possibly have "very little to salvage". The ship itself is a goldmine. Always.

      But you are a not a shipbreaker and do not have the time or equipment to be one.
      So you can only ever grab easy stuff with high value, leaving most of the ship there.

    Just found Void Marauders on steam, then wanted to check it out via gameplay video. And what do I find? My favorite Indie Game tester already made a Video :D. Splatty always ahead of the curveball :D

    don't know about you but MAN do I hate the "Scramble" mechanic, like I can do everything right and do all the flanking and then stumbled upon the enemy that should have zero idea I'm there n they get free movement to find cover n avoid my tactical positioning. just cant stand that shit, its literally a way to artificially make the game difficult. and half the time the AI doesn't make smarter plays, it just plays the same it will always play but just doesn't have to care about tactics, it'll smash your front line every time because it has insane hit to dodge values and calculates it'll still come out on top. hell I've had scrambles that put my flankers in flanks, its pretty stupid

    XCOM does have an option you can tick to have hit/crit chances calculated based on position where you don't need to be perpendicular to the enemy. Ie, the more you see of the enemy the higher the hit, damage and crit chance. I never play without it on. I think I've seen a short example of how it works where the enemy model has 5 or 6 points from which lines are drawn to your soldiers weapons. The more points "exposed" the higher your hit and crit chances.

    Yellow moving was called dashing in XCOM and it gave you a increased chance to dodge.

    I really like the concept. The only ding is the x-com combat. It's kinda like Void Bastards meets x-com for me. I really liked what Phoenix Point did for that type of combat, and that system would make me feel better here. I know people really like it, but X-Com style combat is just not my jam.

    This looks pretty cool. I absolutely _HATE_ the scramble turn mechanic in the newer XCom games. Means tactics have Iess meaning and you're just moving from one firefight to the next and enemies effectively don't exist until you move into their sector. I much prefer how the old XCom games and Xenonauts do it.

    So far, I've been impressed with the speed at which the developer has been responding to any early access players notes, bug reports, and reviews. For me, $11 USD well spent. Not perfect, but loads of potential if the current trends I've noted continue to be the reality.

    Nice little game! Makes a change of pace from endless X-Com. Like the pirate theme. Lot of potential. Will revisit when it's had its first big upgrade.

    Love at atheistic and am a big fan of this type of mix of turn-based XCom and space.
    Have you looked at Stellar Tactics lately? It is a small team passion project that is still in early access on steam, and has a lot of what this games want to do in their future road map.

    Sometimes I wish there would be an alternative option of buying the game, because developers are saying:
    “Hey, guys, we have an early access game, we will add more features in the future”
    And we, as buyers, can choose:
    “Oh, okay, we will give you portion of money from game price, and we will add more money in the future”
    Call it “Early access price” or something.

      Typically Ea games are offered at a discount from their release price for this reason.

      I don't think it's like a "I played this last week, and the dev reached out" kinda thing, so much as SC comes back after (sometimes a long time) awhile and plays it again after its been updated a bit.

      Seen some cool concepts/games that integrate time or show enemy intension, an other had a retical that might or might not increase hit-chance. I see good original stuff, this aint it, but it still could be.
