Absolutely wonderful memory! What a wonderful clip! As a young boy of 10 years old, my father would take me and my younger brother on an early Sunday morning, to Cape Town Harbour, where, with permission from the Port Captain, we would be allowed to board one of the beautiful tugs (just a bit smaller than this one in the video) which went out daily into Table Bay to bring to dock all manner of huge ships, mainly passenger liners, visiting our beautiful city. What an amazing experience for a young boy! We were allowed to stand just ahead of the bridge to view the ships and oftentimes to go into the engine room, where we saw these immense hissing and puffing steam engines thrusting their connecting rods down and up and turning the propellor shaft which led to the stern of the ship and turned the propellor. I also often experienced the actuating of the finely polished brass capstan, which, on the instruction of the captain on the bridge, had to be turned to FULL SPEED AHEAD or SLOW ASTERN, etc. I shall never forget the PING-PING sound and the extreme excitement of actually starting and stopping those huge steam engines! I am now eighty-one years young, and still remember these tugs with great excitement and huge pride! Thanks so much from beautiful Cape Town, South Africa.

What a beautiful little steam ship. How wonderful it is maintained and is still seaworthy. Fantastic video, many thanks.

Yes, built in 1906 (even slightly older than the Titanic). A very old lady, this former buoy tender, which today is a museum ship of the city of Kiel and is maintained by a club. I have often sailed with her, it is soooo fascinating that you can see this old technology in operation and not just as disused object with dead technic.

Super Video von der alten Lady. Eine tolle, freundliche und aufmerksame Crew. Schöne alte Technik, man kann sich alles ansehen und auch mal eine Schippe Kohle nachlegen.

Depends on where you go; the Bussard is usually located in Kiel and just came to Hamburg for an Event. Five or six Steam Ships are based in Hamburg, plus a Steam-powered Floating Crane and a Suction Dredger, neither of which have Propulsion though. A little upstream the Elbe (River in Hamburg) is a Paddle Steamer in Lauenburg, and near the Location of the Bussard in Kiel is another Steam Ship in Flensburg. All of them are preserved and maintained by Volunteers; I was a Stoker on the Steam Ship in Flensburg while studying there.
