  • It's FRIDAY @PizzaFLIX
Starring: Broderick Crawford, Richard Conte, Anne Bancroft
    Director: Russell Rouse
Screenplay: Clarence Greene & Russell Rouse
Go deep into the underworld and inside a national crime syndicate. Richard Conte plays an ice-cold Hitman rising up the ranks of the New York family, with Anne Bancroft as the mob boss' daughter who tries to thaw his heart. From the writing team of the Ultra Noir D.O.A, this hard-hitting crime flick created the blueprint for modern mafia movies like THE GODFATHER and GOODFELLAS.

Why can't they make movies like this today? In the first few moments, New York Confidential grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Richard Conte is brilliant as the stone cold, high functioning, psychopathic hitman.
Broderick Crawford nails it as a family man, with a big heart, who happens to be a mob boss. Great supporting cast and director. To say that the Godfather borrowed heavily from this movie is an understatement.
I can't believe that I missed seeing this movie in the theater when it came out. I was only 3 years old at the time, but that's no excuse.

As Stevie Wonder sang as a kid long ago from his hit, 'Uptight (Everything Is Alright)' "...Can't give her the things that money can buy, but I'll never, never, never make my baby cry..." Or as Bancroft said herself, "He makes me laugh a lot…. I get excited when I hear his key in the door. It's like, 'Ooh! The party's going to start!"

The casting and the acting was brilliant. My accolades are about the script. With a few actors the movie's story line was clean, clear cut, and totally believable, how a syndicate gets engulfed in trouble. Trouble started slowly, almost unnoticed, with the government and the foreign investors... it snowballed from there, to the culmination. And it wasn't done with fanfares, with melodrama. It was all very realistic, real to the viewer. The pacing of the story: impeccable. Not one moment did I have to say "no, this couldn't have been that way." Smart writer(s), kudos to them. And sorry, I haven't finished. The character development was brilliant, too... the dizzy blondes, and the all-too-smart but overprotected daughter whose tragedy she could not avoid although she was protesting it with hands, feet and teeth. (So to speak). Her last scene she showed incredibly accurate displays of schizoaffective disorder. Even the play of her eyes were down pat.
    Brilliant, brilliant movie.

Broderick Crawford is excellent in this, and Richard Conte plays the cold-hearted hitman, quite similar to his role in "The Big Combo" from the same year. Anne Bancroft does a good job of playing the daughter trying to break free from her mob boss father. I prefer these noirs from the 40s and 50s to much of what is produced by Hollywood today.
