Steven The L1011 had a full flying Stabilizer. It was not one piece. It had two "Elevators". The elevators were controlled by a cable system that raised the elevators at high angle of attack ( low speed ). They performed a similar function as flaps. They increased the camber of the stabilizer (increased pitch authority at low speed). This allowed the use of a narrower lower drag stabilizer at cruse speed.
Awesome!!! I flew on the Eastern L-1011's when I was a kid, and I'm pretty sure I flew I on the ATA L-1011 (2:21) going over to the sandbox when I was in the military. Great airplane.
The L-1011 was before my time and I never got to fly in one, but from what I hear it was one of the most reliable airliners ever produced. It's one of the few mass-produced airliners that never had a crash due to mechanical failure (all crashes were due to weather or pilot error). Unfortunately, however, it cost a lot to manufacture and entered the market a bit too late to be able to compete effectively with the DC-10 and 747-100.
Many thanks for this remarkable channel. I only wish you were doing it in the BCAL days. There are far too few records of that wonderful livery coming and going.
Always loved looking straight at the nose of the Delta L-1011s.....with how the livery design had the nose of the aircraft in black, it looked just like an Orca whale! So cool looking!
Back when you could go to the airport gates without a boarding pass! I used to do my homework at the gates while watching planes takeoff. I’m weird but it helped me to focus 😀
Back in the early 1980s I flew from Montreal to Edmonton in an Air Canada L-1011. It was the smoothest, quietest, most comfortable plane I'd ever flown in. It's a shame they don't fly them anymore.
Flew from MCO-DFW in one back in july'93. Non-rev on Delta. Great costumer service great flight. Treated great even being a non-rev from another carrier. We all got along good back then.
In February 1994 I had my 2nd (and last flight) on a Delta L-1011 (DFW - LAX) on the 2nd leg of my first trip to the Philippines. It was a great flight (and sad that I didn't get to fly on a TriStar again).
Thank you for this video! True L-1011 porn, so great!!!! Loved seeing all of them, the only favorite missing was Eastern, which was probably already gone when this was filmed.
I remember being on L-1011 Cathay Pacific (CX) from MNL-HKG-YVR-SFO in the 90’s. It was one of the rarest flight CX had ever made before SFO even became a destination for that airline.
Question: When ever has been the service of the US based Airlines good? Not in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s or 2010s. They never really cared about their passengers. The only decent US Airline was PanAm, the Winner Airline of the Cold War and the Loser Airline at the End of the Cold War in the early 1990s.
Stop living in the past. Flying is cheaper and safer than ever. At the end of the day you just want to get from A to B as safe and comfortable as possible
I flew an LTU L1011 from JFK to FRA back in 1989. Great service, great landing in Frankfurt with heavy rain and very beautiful all women stewardesses. Yes, they were all women and most of them were very nice looking. Best part of the flight. Excellent aircraft.
Which Airline did you fly with? And nowadays the female stewardesses are not looking nice anymore? How sexiest can one be! And the landing in FRA is theses day not comfortable anymore? It still rains in FRA somedays and it can also be very stormy. But the landing is normally very great! You haven't been flying much since 1989 haven't you?
First time on an L1011 was to Germany and back: LAX-Munich-Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf-LAX with LTU German Airlines in1986. After that with TWA a bunch of times until they went under. Gone are the days!
I'll bet he did. I grew up right outside or Logan Airport in suburban Boston and saw them coming in many times over my house. Maybe your dad was flying one of them.
In person which was louder? DC-10 or L1011 on take off? I flew in a TWA L1011 as a kid and loved it. I remember this feeling of incredible torque suddenly come on right as the plane began it's take off roll.
The louder one most times the DC 10 with it,s general electric engines and even north west airlines with there Pratt an Whitney,s on the 10,s were loud the L1011 was more of a loud hum more like a Hoover vacuum cleaner just saw your post now hope it helps
Every time i see that HIDEOUS TWA livery, all i can think of is Johnny from the movie Airplane. “Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol….” I can’t believe people actually sat down and looked at designs and said “oh yes, this one, this is THE BEST LIVERY FOR US!”
While I understand and appreciate fuel efficiency and energy savings, plane watching will never be the same. Very little to no quad jets, absolutely no tri-jets........literally everything has only two engines.......boring!
You will never see an airplane more beautiful than this.
Awesome video, my Dad was an L-1011 Captain for quite sometime. He loved that airplane.
Thank you so much.. Glad you enjoy our work and thanks for commenting!
I miss the old Tristars. Great video, thanks for posting.
Very welcome 👍✈️
I wish they still made tri-stars too bad Lockheed only makes fighter planes now because they make more money
My favourite of all time.
JustPlanes, your videos never cease to amaze me! Huge fan of the throwback clips, especially of tri-holers.
Just the way the engines sounded is music to my ears. Those rolls-Royce RB 211’s .
I love that single piece horizontal stabilizer/elevator.

My very first time flying was in a Delta L1011. Seattle to Orlando with a stopover in Atlanta. Beautiful aircraft.
i wish i could have lived in pre 9/11 america... things seemed much nicer back then
LTU
Absolutely fantastic video, such a great aircraft to watch.....channel is superb as well with such a variety of footage!
Now we're talkin sweeeet...Tristars 4ever!!!
Probably the best compilation of L-1011's I've seen on here 👍👍
TWA and L1011 my favorite plane and airline
The first plane I ever flew on was an Air Canada L-1011. Great compilation!
I just love 💕 the bozz saw sounds of the powerful machines during takeoff! I certainly miss the Lockheed TriStar! A lot of very happy memories!

Nice ride! I did it in a Rich International DC-8. Yep, a DC-8 complete with 65 year old flight attendants.

I was on a TWA L-1011 from New York to LAX back in the 80's
L1011 was such a amazing plane. Even the freaking autopilot can butter
Thank you for answer. To watch this video is a pleasure to me.
Flew many times on TWA's L1011 to LAX and up and down the east coast. They were beauties, inside and out.
Those were the days :-)
Thank you for posting this!! Hard to believe the L-10’s and DC-10’s were once common place at airports! Miss those days!
Thank you for doing what you are doing...you take me to my childhood when aviation was considered a hobby....now its just a business sadly...
Many thanks for this remarkable channel. I only wish you were doing it in the BCAL days. There are far too few records of that wonderful livery coming and going.
Very nice video! Thanks my friend for post it.
I still love watching the L-1011’sfly even though they have all passed away with time. Beautiful airplane
My father worked on every one of those TWA 1011's
I have flown many times on that ATA L-1011 when they were based out of Indy. It carried me from Indy to Vegas many, many times.
TWA was the best. But also, ATA had the best service to Hawaii. We had the best flight crew ever.
The two guys that have not liked this clip should be LOCKed for not paying HEED to the greatest airplane in history.
To bad they couldn,t bring it back with 2 engines might give the 777 and 350 a run for the money same fuselage cross section width
One of the coolest Airliner ever built!
OMGOSH!!! My second fav plane the Lockheed 1011!
What's your first? 747?
@@gabrielcheneyholub4322 727
I'm a little partial to the L-1011 TriStar, My Favorite Commercial Jet, the Boeing 727 is my #2 Favorite.

“ATA ALL THE WAY!”
I used to say,
back in the day,
when I flew from L.A.
to Hawai’i Nei.

Loved the Tri Star & TWA. A go to combo that was great flying. Too bad both are gone.
This is my kind of video!
Miss all these L10-11s and DC-10s, 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I remember flying in the L1011s of Eastern,TWA,Delta, and British Airways in the 80s and 90s.
Thank you for this video! True L-1011 porn, so great!!!! Loved seeing all of them, the only favorite missing was Eastern, which was probably already gone when this was filmed.
Eastern Airlines went bankrupt in 1991!

The day's of good airlines are all over. The day's when they cared about you now it's how many things they can charge you for & do less.
Dave Robinson you’re so right !

@@pascaltholen2180 I believe I flew Pan Am to Rio in 1987. It was a good flight there and back. 747 SP if I recall correctly.
the "day's" of rudimentary knowledge of grammar are of long past.
Stop living in the past. Flying is cheaper and safer than ever. At the end of the day you just want to get from A to B as safe and comfortable as possible
Nice, that TWA L10 had a short takeoff roll. Looks like he started his rotation near the Sepulveda BL overpass.
gorgeous plane!
wow Lockheed Tristar !!
LTU a regular visitor from Düsseldorf, Germany back in the 90s.

This and the DC 10 , I first flight was on a DC10. Big planes
beautiful
Good old tristar.
My favorite engine sound....also Airbus A300 idle engines...but L1011#1😎
Eran los aviones subsónicos más veloces, solo superados por el Concorde. Ojalá renazcan de nuevo al ser unas maravillas de máquinas. 👍🏻
I'll bet he did. I grew up right outside or Logan Airport in suburban Boston and saw them coming in many times over my house. Maybe your dad was flying one of them.
Only one Delta ship at LAX- surprising, considering how many they flew into there, especially after the merger with Western...
Western had no L1011 operating, which Delta could have used after the merger in 1987. Western operated only DC10's as Tri-Engine Aircraft.
Wow wtf is up with the airplanes approaching at that high pitch?
sweet
No Pan Am. It was after '91!
business will always kill hobbies... unfortunately.
Including LTU TRISTAR-500 takeoff
You can sure see how bad the smog was back in the day.
“Back in the day?” It’s no better today than it was then.
Best jet ever.

that is a very good airplane. big very sad they don't work anymore
Grind me a pound of that!
I flew a lot as a kid but don't know if I was ever on one of these. Hopefully I'll get hit inn the head and remember.
weather it be the L 10 11, the dc 10 or the md 11 i love them all, the tail mounted engine just looks awesome on these beautiful birds.
TriTanics!
Maybe it's a trick of the light, but it seems like those Volvos just don't want to settle down!
Puro TWA :3
Liked the Delta and Air Canada livery back then. If only L10-11s were still flying. Planes today don't interest me tbh
Those DC douglas's and such just aren't very safe.
I read these were fuel hogs thats why they were phased out, but I always loved this aircraft.
😘 haul ass!
The good old EL 10 Leven

TWA's final livery was cool, the one with the gold globe
@@ImperialDiecast agreed 💯 It was their best
A lot more respect and alot less political correctness.

Rare footage of TWA actually landing instead of crashing
