- The clownfish are spawning regularly! I love that they are on a schedule...but I'm running out of hatch tanks!
Thanks for checking out my ongoing series cover my attempts at raising baby clownfish. My DaVinci Clownfish have been spawning regularly for the past 6 months and I'm trying to better my practice each time I get the chance. Rearing clownfish fry has been a bit more difficult than I anticipated but I continue to learn each time!
Huge thanks to everyone who has helped along the way. We'll take a deep dive with some clownfish breeding experts soon. When you get the chance, check out Robert King's Clownfish on Facebook below.

This is where the idea for nemo was originated when scientists/fishbreeders were first starting to breed clownfish in captivity.
Nice to finally meet you. I almost didn’t recognize you in the blues hat. I’m so used to the camo Cardinals hat.
Lol! Nice to meet you as well! Sometimes I even go hatless...
The start of the fish room/office has begun that is a huge step for me in the hobby this year and going to be an exciting thing!
Glad to hear you were able to keep your position, life gets crazy I can agree and we appreciate you!
Uno is looking good on that 48 day video! Awesome video Remy!
Thanks Blaine! Looking forward to your new setup. I know this new place has come with some challenges but just remember, everything will eventually work out for ya.
I've heard numerous times that the first few clutches are often "weak" and fail. It could be that the clowns learn and gain experience in how to raise eggs over the first few clutches. Perhaps the parents do not oxygenate the eggs properly or do not clean them sufficiently during development, meaning they've suffered oxygen deficiencies or experience infections on hatching, resulting in high fry mortality. As a result of this early inexperience, clownfish may have also evolved to produce lower quality fry in those first few spawns so as not to waste resources on offspring that have high rates of attrition. For example, the female could invest nutritionally less into each egg and so the fry hatch with smaller yolk sacks. This is all speculation but you asked for some possible biological explanations :D
THANK YOU! This is what I'm after. Anecdotal evidence only gets you so far. I always want to know WHY and there is so much "I do this and this and it always works for me..." - but WHY does it work? I appreciate the explanation. I think she's relatively new to spawning so that could be the issue. I just don't know when she actually started laying. Since I moved them to the clay pot I'm on her 4th clutch.
beutiful Clown fish in the reef
Also in St. Louis!!
Starting the breeding journey with a black and white clown and black ice clown!!
drove through St Louis on the way back to Texas from Ohio and said a silent hello to you and your tanks lol
I think I might have heard that...😂
That's why clownfish have so many eggs.. because less than 1% survive in the wild. You're on par with the wild be proud!
Love the clownfish content… actually perfect for me because Corals an Clowns are the two things I’m currently obsessing over, learning more an more about etc..
New this year: Growing phytoplankton 😀 Edit; because growing weed wasn't an option here in Kansas...lol!
LOL!!! Yet.
New thing this year: MACRO ALGAE, having a lot of fun with it!
I know I'm somewhat of a bandwagon fan but I can't wait to have a proper Macro display.
This guy should be a way bigger channel because he’s goated
Thank you Remy, for creating such awesome videos all the time! It’s RUclipsrs like you that helped me a lot in my (still) beginning stages of Reefing and gave me the confidence to finally pull the plug and set up a reeftank. My Mocha Storm Clowns moved in yesterday and I couldn’t be happier 🤗
I always want to try and make this hobby as approachable as possible. It can be super intimidating - but its so much fun when you get the hang of it!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I just fragged my first Zoas after rewatching your fragging video. They look pretty good🤗
Happy you are back,
This is so cool so excited for the future it’s always fun when a new video is out thanks I know it can be difficult don’t worry about it it can be hard but anytime there is a new video ill always watch
Thank you!! As always, appreciate the love!
Robert Kings Clownfish! Great page!
Hey Remy, glad your back see you at Aquashella!
Can't wait! 2 weeks away!
Sup Remy, My new thing is a 6ft waterbox peninsula 230gal upgraded from a 75gal, plus giving a shot at brine shrimp hatching.
Love all that!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Thanks man, glad to see you back looking forward for the next updates.
The lone survivor!
I did my first trade in the hobby, got a double head of gold hammer, and 3 polyps of princess oxana zoas.
Those Oxana's are nice!
Glad your back! Can’t wait to see the clownfish breeding continue to develop.
Thanks! Good to be back. Just gotta hit the groove! I think Aquashella will help.
I am picking up a very sleep deprived vibe off of that final 30 seconds or so there 🤣🤣🤣
Sleep deprived is my life. Morning radio means first alarm at 3:15a 😴
Finally been waiting for a new upload!
Me too! So happy to post today!
Love your channel! Please keep doing what you’re doing. It’s very inspiring, entertaining, and encouraging. Look forward to more vids and trying to start my first nano soon.
Thank you Greg!! Glad you like!
Yeah baby
Happy to see you back. Was kind of worried bro. Hope all is well
All good!! Thanks for the support!
Anytime bro!
It is addictive to breeding and raising Clownfish!!
Something new was everything man.
Glad your back Zach!
Nice to be back!
try feeding them with baby brine shrimp with the lights on 2 or 3 times a day it worked for me
Good to see you, again! Hope you stay well.
Thank you Adam!
If only life was perfect all the time. The truth is we will never run out of problems to solve. Love your channel man. Keep your eyes on your goals.
Truth. Sometimes, you just have to step back and enjoy the journey. Thank you for the comment!
Sorry to hear about your cohost, I know since the pandemic happened, alot of the workers there have been let go, hopefully things get back on track. As for your video output, your basically giving up your free time for our entertainment/education, so however long it takes I'm willing to wait 😁 I completely forgot about Aquashella, which kinda blows my mind because last year it's all I could think about, here's hoping I'm able to make the next big aquarium event and finally shake your hand, thanks for all that you do
Thanks for the perspective Mike!! I appreciate it!
Glad to see another video! Ah, yes, life....
Met Scott Crowe at Reef a Palooza, super cool guy. See you all at Aquashella.
Life...lol. Tends to be that way sometimes!
Glad to see another video, there always good.
Thanks again Tim!
He uses airline hose to do the siphoning, He said he runs a piece of the tubing through the bigger hose he shows, using an airline hose alone to have a strong enough flow to suck them in while very slowly taking water out of the tank
something new i tried this year is dosing. which i’ve found is very beneficial & helpful in extending water change schedules
Oh yeah! It helps a lot when you get the hang of it.
Been waiting for a new video! 😂 Love It!
I know, I am ashamed 😔 Happy to be back though!
It’s all good!
Got 50 raised the first time I attempted it. Maybe going to give it another try some day soon.
He’s back
I started my tank this year! That’s my new thing lol it’s going so well. Really enjoy your videos
How's it been going so far?!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral it’s awesome. I’ve added my first corals and they’re all healthy and growing. Looking forward to trying new things!
Looking forward to seeing you. I am going to the show on Saturday. New tank this year is a Florida/Carribean Mangrove biotope with a tide stimulation. Filling it with flowers, rics and macro algae.
Love that tank idea! I'll see you Saturday!
In nature there is "K/R theory of selection". this theory is a trade off of the reproductive health and fitness of offspring and quantity. Humans, elephants are classed as K-selection as they have single offspring and look after them for many years. R selection are creatures such as rabbits, and rats or clownfish. They produce a lot of offspring and only very few survive due lack of genetic fitness leading to illness and/or predation. The majority of offspring are not genetically "fit" under optimum conditions; and thus, won't make it to adulthood in the wild. When we breed aquarium fish we actually get statistically higher numbers of offspring that reach adulthood compare to the wild. However, When we are breeding there are many factors that can affect the conditions we breed in. We loose a large precent. when we start breeding as we have to find optimum conditions. Ensuring stability in tank parameters and healthy enriched food supply was key when I use to breed. I would only get 1 fish per batch. I ended up taking the rock out each time (careful not to allow them to touch air) and put them into another tank with water from the main tank. I did water changes in the breeding breeding tank and then used the breeding tank water for the the babies grow tank. I eventually got about 20-30% survival, generally because I was a bit lazy. I love watching the stripes develop. My first clownfish baby was a A. percula which turned out a miss-bar, round 20 years ago. Keep up the great work!
Great explanation! Thank you for that!
Once again AMAZING video
Thank you Kieran!
I was wondering what happen. Glad your back.
Happy to be back!
Sold all my tanks and fish and upgraded to a Red Sea 750 xxl! It’s been running since last October and is doing great
Just set up an IM 25 lagoon. Wanting to do an anemone only tank. Just waiting for it to cycle so I can start buying from Ben
Nice!!
Ron sounds amazing !!! Can't wait to see the progress of your nem tank !!!!
Haha love the ending, and don't be to hard on yourself, you were successful twice all you have do do now is build on that, I know you'll do it, stay confidant..
Oh and new thing this year, moving up from a nano to a 40gallon, built my first sump, and fuge, custom plumbing, modified everything as it's all second hand bits, fiat time using dry rock too, hopefully filling it today first time using an RODI too hahaha
Thank you Alex 🙏
Love the stuff mr llama
Thanks David!
Dude love the clownfish breeding adventure, gonna be so cool to see how dos is turning out to look like. Also Uno is looking stunning ;)
Have you considered breeding other fish than just clowns?
Yeah! Gobies, Mandarins...etc. One thing at a time though. I wanna make sure I've got all the tools first. Thanks for the support, as always!
Reefing is addictive ( videos, tanks, frags, etc )
TRUTH!
Hope to see you at aquashella!
Make sure to stop me!! Can't wait to hang!
Great video Remy !!!!
Can't wait to the fish room progression.
This year ......
-Stated a company Bensnems.com
-Breeding clownfish
-Getting lost in macro alge books!!!!
-Scaped my first display macro seahores tank!
started my first reef tank 2 weeks ago
Welcome to the addiction!
Loving the channel as always and wish you success with your first breeding setup...gonna be great to follow....I noticed by the look of things you use fritz RPM blue box,do you have any readings for what Alk it mixes up at? And possibly same for red box? Cheers.
Blue box mixes just over 8dkh. Red box is 10-11dkh. I love it because if you ever want to know what the batch mixed at you can email customer service and ask.
Following along! I'm also looking to improve on one solo survivor for clowns and bangai!
Oooo! Bangai! Mouth brooders right?
I love your videos I think there the best on RUclips
Thanks Aiden! That means a lot!
See ya at aquashella remy!
We gonna party boiiii!
survival of the fitter, it is a fight to the death until only 1 survive xD
Always new stuff. Wish I could make it to Aquashella but have to work at my LFS part time that weekend.
Bummer!! Well, at least you're doing something aquarium related that weekend.
Hey!!!!
Hey!
I mean of all the nemo’s out there one of your guys deserves that name!!! However I do like the naming logic you’re going with! Awesome video and I’m following closely. My pair keep showing signs but still have never laid. But prior knowledge before the event is always a good way to go! Appreciate you man! Let me know if you ever come over to Scotland! Free lodging and a tour guide! 😉
I don't know if they'd ship overseas but look into a product called "Spawn Aid." I've been dosing that. It might help trigger your pair. ....and HECK YES! That would be awesome. I've never been to the other side of the pond before.
Do it! I helped start a reefing community up here (by start I mean made a WhatsApp group that folks have joined! 😂😂😂) Could easily spend a week going round the country and showing you how deprived out reefing culture is over here! 😂😂😂 We do ok but tends to be the die hards who make a hobby out it! Lots of shipping stuff involved! I’m gonna have a look into that stuff but I’m also not ready! Not nearly ready to be a clown fish daddy! I’m still not ready to be a my kids daddy and she’s 2! She’s doesn’t seem to mind though. Thinks I’m funny at least... maybe just funny lookin...
I would suspect that nutrition ( or lack of) is the reason that only one fry survived, especially because they all made it past the first day. I would pay special attention to what you feed the parents ( enriching food with fatty and nutrient rich additives like selcon may help). Also be sure that the rotifers you feed out are completely gut-loaded with algae paste shortly before you feed them out. Rotifers only take about 2 hours to digest algae paste , and they are most nutritionally dense while it’s still in their system.
Great to see Uno!!
Still flippin!
Hi bahama, how we can make sure our clownfishs is pairing. Yesterday i bought small black storm and 7 days latter i bought big size phantom clownfish.. Thanks
Nothing new yet but I wanna try a moorish idol
Hi Remy , the problem the eggs didn't hatch is because you bring the hatch too early & bubble not correct . 8days they hatch , after lights off wait for 45min & the eggs will hatch . The fry will get shock very easy , use red light to catch & dim light after 1st day....😄
Thank you!
Love the breeding videos. Definitely want to try this in the future. I have two gladiator clowns but they aren't ready yet. Looking forward to saying hi at Aquashella!
Heck yes! Make sure to stop me. Would love a pic!
Oh, yeah, new thing this year - culturing phytoplankton and copepods.
New to me bigger display tank and I think it's finally ready for water.
That's the best step!!
Im currently trying to setup a planted tank and I am going to be at Aquashella hope to be able to meet you there fingers crossed.
Stop me if you see me! I think I'm hanging at the Sicce booth on Sunday morning.
Would it be ideal to have a 5 gallon tank set aside ready to take the clownfish eggs out the reef tank and let them grow a little bit in the small tank ??
good
Hey did uno survive? I hope you master the breading process good luck.
Yep! He appears at 6:25
Love your videos Remy, been keeping up with all of them. Any shirts to purchase? Saw the hoodies but it's hot for those now
Not sure why RUclips only selected the hoodies...weird. I gotta update the store. Stay tuned!
I like the ideal of more pairs but if it was me I'd work on being able to hatch from the first pair first lol You'll get it though, it takes trial and error to learn what works for you best
I am going down the clownfish rabbit hole as I just put together another tank to get another pair to see if I can get to the first step of egg laying. If that works then the next step is trying to get a few to survive. Hoping you get tres and a whole lot more in time. Great update.
How old are your clowns? I'd grab Spawn Aid if they are mature. Seems to have helped with mine!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Frankie and Charlotte have been together over a year but they are in the main tank. Ranger and Gary are only paired for a couple months now. Once this tank cycles I know a guy to get me a mated pair and we'll go from there.
It might be cannibalism.
Saw a TedTalk video on this - specially for frogs and fishes.
The dominant fry eats others so it doesn't have to compete for food. Makes it grow faster.
Happened with my betta fry as well - there were a dozen and then overnight the number dwindled to two.
Maybe you have to add more food but then clean the water fast enough that you don't get ammonia? Not sure though.
Got my ticket already! And the newest thing I tried was my 80 gallon lagoon tank that I’ve been wanting for the longest time and today just got a master scoly hoping it survives🤞🏼
Master!!! Nice piece!
New thing this year would be a pico tank
Oh nice! What's inside?
Some zoas, gsp, 2 mushrooms, a goni, a bunch of snails and a shrimp. Also there is tons of hair algae
Starting trying some Nonphotosynthetic corals. Loving the gorgonians but they're hard to come by in Australia. Would love some blue and yellows if I can find them 😂
Love the video, might have to try breeding clowns later this year aswell!!
NPS is cool! Check out Levi (NPS Reefer) on RUclips and IG. He's got a pretty neat system.
I wish you showed us uno!
I did! 6:25
New this year. Getting back into it after 5 years.
Welcome back! What are you starting with?
@@BahamaLlamaCoral an old 14g BioCube. Just ordered an AI prime and will be getting corals by the end of June.
Missed you brother
Missed you too! Time to get back in the groove.
I'm a marine ecologist but, to be fair, I don't work with clownfish. I'd say your ammonia hypothesis makes sense; maybe ammonia was a bit high and as a few die, that creates a positive-feedback for ammonia levels until you notice all of the mortality. Then you are only left with a couple (by chance, 1 each time in your case). Them being so sensitive to ammonia makes sense in that they are pelagic plankton post-hatching, during which time they would be in highly nutrient-poor waters in nature.
Coincidence for the 1 remaining fish then. I will say this...I just had another clutch hatch on Tuesday (not shown in this video) and have 3 remaining. Used Prime in that batch so maybe there's something to the ammonia thing.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I wonder if oxygenation and temperature are interacting with the ammonia?; as ammonia spikes, it consumes oxygen (by way of nitrification), which in concert with higher temperatures could be dropping the dissolved oxygen below levels that the larvae can handle. High available dissolved oxygen levels are pretty important for other marine larvae.
I love this response!!!!!
The whole reefing was basically new this year. One great thing was fragging and selling some stuff.
Happy to hear you're fragging!
Maybe you should try to put your fry Tank higher and Start a syphon instead the pump so you get always the Same tank Level ....
Yeah, that's another adjustment I could make. I just need to fiddle with it a bit more...just not before the night of hatch, lol!
See you at aquashella remy
Sounds good Nolan!
Was wondering where u where..😊
Still alive!
What actually got me into reefing was about 10 years ago my dad and I would raise clownfish. We did this for about 2 years, the most successful batches would be us letting the babies hatch in tank turn all pumps off and using a flashlight and turkey baster get them all out one by one. Hope this helps!
Might try that!
I just got a tomini tang, and a rainbow anemone that my mocha storm clownfish are already hosting!
Love my tomini. It's such a great addition to a midsize reef.
Uno just built different
Having similar problems with my breeding pair. Is it possible that the female becomes mature enough to lay eggs before the make is mature enough to fertilize them?
What is going on with the Clown fish breeding anything new I wonder if you only have to feed rotifers how about other food like baby brine shrimp or cocoa pods or plankton please update thanks
I’m wondering the same thing. I want to see uno lol
Hey Remy, Let me know if you need help with the syphon method. I got you! I've done it tons of times!
I tried it and definitely needed a DC pump to control the flow. I feel like that's the best way to do it though. Let the parents bring the eggs to maturity.
I have a black snowflake clown and a flurry clown paired , that just started laying eggs. My first time at this, I’m going to try switching the rock the eggs are on into my quarantine tank the sixth night. First round of eggs the clowns ate them all the sixth night.....I think🤔.
You might try just observing the first 2-3 clutches. See how long till the hatch. If they are spawning regularly you'll have a lot of practice. Robert's method might actually work well in your case.
I'm trying my hand at keeping a pygmy angel. He's almost out of QT.🤞 Glad everything is good with you.
The wait is almost over! Cool fish!
Planning a frag tank
Is there a part 6 to your clownfish breeding?
How much flow do you have in your fry tank? Im worried my air stone in my 2gal is to much for them. On day 2 and have 6 fry
There are so many variables. The airstone should be slightly agitating the water but nothing too crazy. I'm sure that's fine. I'd look into a larger hatch tank though. A 10 gallon tank filled halfway is standard from what I've seen.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral awesome thanks! I planned on slowly increasing the tank size as they got bigger. I read a 2 gal was good to start in so they had less area to swim to find the rotifers. I'll start looking around for something bigger!
Maybe try a Vossen larvae trap- I hear people have great success with those, and that’s what I’m planning to use if my guys ever restart spawning.
My only worry with that is if there will be any eggs left that last night before hatch. She gets a taste on the last day and starts the egg buffet. Definitely buying to have though.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I don’t think she will have developed a taste for them- it’s more that they can sense a ‘bad’ batch, and they consume the nutrients to reprocess for next time, instead of letting them rot. Lots of animals- including mammals- do this. I have experience with research mice, and they do it, and I used to breed Danio zebra fish and they would occasionally do it if someone got sloppy with light discipline. I don’t recall ever having a particular specimen that was a consistent eater though. Although, you’ll know for sure in about 4 weeks I guess.
Good luck!
beutiful Clown fish in the reef
