Steven Juris wait till next year, he's been hurt the whole year, if he's fully healthy for the majority of the season next year he will be a force again, this is like the 1st time since his rookie year that he's not batting 300 or hitting 30+ homers
Jim leyland was so overrated. Before he came to a extremely talented Detroit teen he was a well below .500 manager. With the talent he had in pitching staff we should have won a couple world championships but he didn't know how to manage a pitching staff.
This exact same thing happened about a week ago. Cabrera was tossed in the middle of an AB because he was pissed that the ump didn't appeal w/ the ump at 1st base. Ausmus came out to argued and he was tossed too.
He blatantly swung around. Some debate on what is a swing on a checked swing: some say if the barrel of the bat extends past the plate, other say if the hands extend past the plate, still others say if the barrel of the bat extends in front of the hands. Here, the barrel of the bat extended in front of the hands, but BOTH the barrel AND his hands extended in front of the plate. All boxes got checked there. And it doesn't matter if he got hit by the pitch during his checked swing attempt - what matters is the swing of the bat during the pitch. If you swung, you swung. That's a strike by rule....
You don't have to "say something extremely vulgar" to get ejected. If you argue a strike (or in this case foul) call, which he appeared to be doing, a pitch or two after the incident and don't drop it, you're going to get tossed 9 out of 10 times. He did have a legitimate argument, and I'm not saying he was wrong on that front, but arguing a call like this to the ump wasn't a very good idea. It doesn't matter if he's "the best player in the game". He still has to follow the rules of the game. In this case, MLB rule 9.02. "(a) Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions."
Cabrera swung and got hit. From LL to MLB, that is a strike. Cabrera should know that. He got his explanation immediately after. He should have dropped it there. Continuing to jaw after the next pitch earned him an ejection. Cabrera was the only one behaving improperly.
Leyland was the best manager that mlb has ever seen. Back in 2013 there was a reunion with him and his original players. I was there for it. Brad sucks, I just want Jim back
It looks like Cabrera was given some leeway with what he was saying. I'm guessing the ump finally said, "OK, you said your piece, now that's it," and Cabrera kept going. As Jonah Platt pointed out, you can't argue balls & strikes.
Matt Jones It's not umpires thinking they're the show. it's umpires tired of a single player thinking he's the show. it's a team game, and some umps dont wanna put up people like miggy and even manny ramirez. Idk if you've ever delegated a shift, event, etc. but there's nothing worse than someone who heckles you over opinion
He deserved to be tossed, whether the call was right or not, he cannot continue to argue. That's in the rules. If he swings in the umpire's judgement and keeps arguing, they are going to toss you. Grow up and take the call like a man.
R. Austin Gore It should. The tens of thousands of people in the stands didn't come to see Brian Gorman, they came to see players, especially Miguel Cabrera. As long as he's not being incredibly vulgar and disrespectful an umpire should have a cool enough head to take some gripe, especially in THE TOP OF THE FIRST INNING.
Oh Buddy Have you ever umpired? Have you played at the pro, college, or even high school level? Don't presume to know what an umpire at the MLB level should or shouldn't do.
chris7394123 No. But I have enough common sense to know that baseball at the pro level is a business as much as a sport and it shouldn't deprive fans of seeing an all-time great player just because an umpire has a short old-man fuse.
Y'all need to learn the rules. If you argue balls & strikes with an umpire, he can throw you out. And for everyone saying "he didn't swing", it was obvious that he did.
Umpires like this infuriate me. I totally understand that they have the right to throw you out, but Miggy also has the right to talk with the umpire and have a grievance with the calls. It was a bad call, but not a TERRIBLE one. I get pissed off at umps like Gorman because they don't seem to care that the tens of thousands of people in the crowd aren't there to see them. Many/most of them are there to see the only Triple Crown winner since the 1960's. I mean, this is the TOP OF THE FIRST INNING and he is robbing these fans of a chance to see one of the greatest players in league history. With age comes arrogance, just look at Joe West.
chris7394123 Because if the player asks for it an umpire should have enough respect for that player to at least turn his head 3 inches and point his finger at the first base umpire to double-check.
Oh Buddy But at the same time its the home plate umpires call to make, and Gorman thought he didnt need the help. Miggy did take a swing, and I understand his greiveance, but its baseball. One game out of 162 nine times out of ten wont make a difference in the playoff race, epecially in the AL Central.
Oh Buddy Once the plate umpire says "yes he went", by rule there can be no appeal. Only if the plate umpire rules no swing is he allowed to ask for help.
"..by rule there can be no appeal". But the umpires aren't walking talking rulebooks. They are there to officiate and yes make sure people are following the rules, but since the early days of baseball umpires have allowed hitters, cacthers and managers to air their grievances because it's an emotional game.
While I don't understand a lot about what goes on with the umpiring profession or the rules they have to learn, I understand enough to know that you can't argue certain things. All the people here who are criticizing the ump on his decision to eject Cabrera need to look at this from the ump's pov as well before just hating on him.
Unfortunately, it was a strike. The bat crossed the plane of the plate clearly, whether or not he broke his wrists. It may have been a weak ejection, but if you keep talking, you're going to get tossed. Think these guys would know that by now.
Since when does how good a player is affect if he should be thrown out? Players need to be held to the same standards. I hate power trip umps as much as the next guy, but im just saying
He wasn’t arguing balls and strikes. He was arguing the fact he wasn’t even given the option of the 1st base umpire to call if his bat went over the plate.
Todd Dell it’s up to the home plate umpire, if he feels he didn’t get a good view, to grant the appeal and check to 1st base. If he is confident he by no means has to grant the appeal
No question Miggy went around. That said & he knew he did, he should've just kept his big mouth shut & finished his at bat. So he more less got his own ass tossed out of this one.
+defiantone There was no reason to toss him out, he wasn't impeding play to argue, nor was he saying anything vulgar. He would've been much more animated if he did so. There's no issue with disputing a call as long as you don't take it overboard, and you continue to play the game, which he didn't, and he did.
+EggianoScumaldo Rule of thumb when it comes to baseball & that is, you keep you're big mouth shut & don't try & show up the umpire or you get tossed. Simple but fact. I don't like it either, but that's just the way it works. That's why managers get the toss, whenever they argue balls & strikes. Simple but fact. Its like I said, Miggy should've just kept his big mouth shut & he didn't, & ya saw what the end result was.
+defiantone Problem with that is umpires SHOULD be shown up. And they should be okay with it. You can't have a tough (also highly exclusive) job, screw up, and not expect to take some heat for it. They should have thicker skin.
I know. That's what's wrong with baseball and sports in general. Officials are there to do a job, not put their finger on the scale and try to control who wins.
I don’t understand why it matters if he swung or not when he was hit in the leg? I could understand the arm or hand or whatever, but how does his leg effect it? It would’ve probably been hit whether he swung or not...
Well he definitely swung and the replay made that clear, so I don't know why he would even argue that. I think the umpire was thinking the same thing, which is why he decided to give the ejection. The ump made the correct call, everyone knew it, yet he was getting bullied for it. What's he supposed to do?
Cabrera talking to an umpire about a weird play isn't him harassing him. He was wondering why he didn't ask for help. And then he said "he said I went, okay" got back in the box, said 3 words after a pitch and got ejected? It's the teams best player in the 1st inning. These old guys at the corners ruin the sport this way. It takes away from competitive integrity in every way.
The umpires have way too much power to eject. This needs to be reduced, especially over calls of strikes or balls. If replay clearly shows its a ball and the ump calls a strike, how can one get it over ruled?? Its a glaring huge hole here. Someone also suggested to start using a electronic strike and ball zone that can adjust based on the players height. Its one way to eliminate home plate umpire. Since they have replay for outfielders, infielders, runners etc., its time to use replay for strike and ball calls as well. You will need a camera that looks straight down and one out straight out from center field looking at the line from pitching rubber to home plate.
The rule states if the batter offered at the pitch then it’s a swing. No where in the rule does it say or suggest swinging half way across the plate or not. Announcers have been ignorant of this rule since day one.
goodness shack how about a batter not swing pitch that going to hit him and still complain over the damn call come on he asking to be ejected he got it.... 100% right call by umpire miggy wouldn't shut it
You are 100% wrong. If hit by a pitch it does not matter if you swung at it, because your reflex will cause you to swing that bat itself if getting hit around the knee cap.
Steven Juris Its safe to say he has the best left to right moving slider in the big leagues. If not just the best slider of any pitcher. Pineda as a right hander, has a harder slider and has more downward movement, but i dont know of anyone who can move a pitch side to side with more movement than sale, lefty or righty.
I love of the "experts" you as a player cannot argue with umpires period. Coaches can argue field calls and plays at home. Only managers can argue ball strike calls.
The "best player in the game" doesn't get special treatment, or shouldn't. You can't argue balls & strikes. Basic 101. I'm not saying he was, but if he was the rules are the rules.
As an umpire, venting anger by tossing someone after an insult or chirping before taking a deep breath but breathing afterwards is what I feel is more healthy.
Commentater- This is the 2nd time Miguel Cabrera ha been thrown out in the middle of at bat. Me- Well, maybe if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut, and just play the game, that wouldn't be a problem.
"high profile hitters" are bound by the same rules! The guy went on the pitch that hit him...that would be a ..strike. Then he argued the judgement call thus earning him an all expense paid trip to the parking lot! These announcers are a joke!
haha your all mad at the announcers because they said miggys the best player and your arguing that he isn't? too funny your just not a fan and say anything against him even if I wasn't a tigers fan I'd say he is the best I mean seriously he's great. just like now I'd say mike trout is Prolly the best in the game right now same as Zach grenkie. don't deny how good he was... this wasn't 2015 it was 2013
Maple Ridge Mafia If you knew the rules you would know the umpire got the call right. Both you and Miggyy should learn the rules before you run off at the mouth. Umpire was correct, Miggy earned another ejection.
At that point, Leyland, one of the base coaches or Fielder has to get Cabrera away from Gorman. When he starts using his bat and helmet to point at the official's face, that's when you get your slugger out of there.
Announcers: OMG, our best player just got thrown out cause he wouldn't stop arguing with the umpire but it's the umpires fault. These guys are a joke. Blame anybody but the one responsible just cause he's a talented player.
***** But at some point you have to STOP. Cabrera kept going. Even after another pitch was thrown. The umpire gave him some leeway to say his piece but he didn't know enough to stop.
Knew he was wrong? You can't dispute check swings after the strike call has been made. You cannot argue it, it is in the rulebook and he did let him to know to stop. If you noticed, he cut it out started again after being warned. If the umpire let this go on it would be a long day.
No one commenting on this video (or the commentators) knows what he said that got him tossed, therefore no one should have an opinion as to whether it was justified. However, we do know that he was whining about a balls and strikes call.
Like you said, no one was there to hear what was said. Therefore, you can't say that he was arguing balls and strikes. I believe he was arguing the fact that he didn't call down to first for help but, I don't KNOW that any more than you KNOW that he was arguing balls and strikes
Yeah, he's the best player of the game, according to the broadcasters. Do they think that makes him immune to ejection? Give me a break. Bias always kills intelligent baseball.
He wasnt just the best player in the game at that point, he was the first triple crown winner in 45 years. The people who bought tickets wanted to see him play. To throw him out of the game in first inning because you didn't do what 95% of umpires do and call down to first, is absolutely ridiculous
I am guessing Miggy was just being a smart ass after the foul ball asking if that was a strike or if he swung there. But that's just my guess. I hope he didn't cuss him out.
It doesn't matter if you're Miggy or someone just up from the minors for a cup of coffee, you argue balls and strike you're gone. If you argue whether you did or did not offer at a pitch, then yes you are arguing balls and strikes. The ump let him talk for a second, then he said something else after the next pitch.....see you!!!!
"Best player in the game." Not in the league, the game. Has anyone thought that maybe he was talking about the specific game? They were playing the White Socks. Who else would be better IN THIS SPECIFIC GAME?
BruinsChampions2011 He meant the game of baseball because what he said was truth. Cabrera at this point in his career had already won an MVP and was getting another that season so during this he was, in fact the best player in the game, league, and all of baseball.
i love the "jim's gonna get tossed too" when he's still super chill haha

Its safe to say he has the best left to right moving slider in the big leagues. If not just the best slider of any pitcher. Pineda as a right hander, has a harder slider and has more downward movement, but i dont know of anyone who can move a pitch side to side with more movement than sale, lefty or righty.
This ejection is hilarious 🤣 as a Royals fan.
You don't see many of these ejections anymore with the instant replay now.kinda takes some entertainment out of the game
He argued balls and strikes. Then continued to argue. Rightfully tossed. Doesn't matter who you are.
And then your manager comes out to have your back knowing you're wrong. Love it
I love of the "experts" you as a player cannot argue with umpires period. Coaches can argue field calls and plays at home. Only managers can argue ball strike calls.
That ump is Atrocious
Why?? For making the correct call?
I love how whenever a Manager is arguing, the commentators always says, "He's going to get his money's worth". They all say it.
The "best player in the game" doesn't get special treatment, or shouldn't. You can't argue balls & strikes. Basic 101. I'm not saying he was, but if he was the rules are the rules.
Does anyone know who ended up winning this game?
scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=330909104
Who is mighty
Best player may not always be best person
No matter what happened before, Leyland stuck around WAAAYY to long. Just eventually ended up unnecessarily delaying the game.
Maybe he should shut his mouth and just play the game
As an umpire, venting anger by tossing someone after an insult or chirping before taking a deep breath but breathing afterwards is what I feel is more healthy.
what
What did he do wrong?
He kept bitching about the call for too long. Miggy thinks he's God and no call should ever go against him
Don't run your mouth and you get to stay in the game.
Sometimes it's worth it.
aka stfu man you dont know sports hahahaha if theres a bad call or especially a bad ejection, 99% of the time youre not going to stay quiet
Terrel Suggs I was an official for 22 years.
Am I the only person who found the announcers reaction kind of funny?
I remember this game.
Commentater- This is the 2nd time Miguel Cabrera ha been thrown out in the middle of at bat.
Me- Well, maybe if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut, and just play the game, that wouldn't be a problem.
absolutely ridiculous. nothing he did warranted an ejection. he didn't say enough to be thrown out.
What does it mean when the manager gets thrown out of the game? Does it mean that he can't argue with the umpires for the rest of the game?
It means he watches the rest of the game from inside of a clubhouse unable to talk to anybody
@Miguel Cabrera how do you know? You were in the game how'd you hear the broadcasts lol
Que paso?.
Easy call, he went around.
"high profile hitters" are bound by the same rules! The guy went on the pitch that hit him...that would be a ..strike. Then he argued the judgement call thus earning him an all expense paid trip to the parking lot! These announcers are a joke!
Best "hitter" in the game sounds more appropriate.
haha your all mad at the announcers because they said miggys the best player and your arguing that he isn't? too funny your just not a fan and say anything against him even if I wasn't a tigers fan I'd say he is the best I mean seriously he's great. just like now I'd say mike trout is Prolly the best in the game right now same as Zach grenkie. don't deny how good he was... this wasn't 2015 it was 2013
+Detroit_6182 Harper is 2nd best
Might be a hot hitter, but he's not the best. Being the best doesn't just mean getting hits and home runs, it's about class and respect too
Maple Ridge Mafia If you knew the rules you would know the umpire got the call right. Both you and Miggyy should learn the rules before you run off at the mouth. Umpire was correct, Miggy earned another ejection.
Alan Hess and like every other amazing players have not got trown out miggy 5 times dude
:57 "no f*cking way! no f*cking way man!
At that point, Leyland, one of the base coaches or Fielder has to get Cabrera away from Gorman. When he starts using his bat and helmet to point at the official's face, that's when you get your slugger out of there.
So wait explain to me how in the rules that's not a walk, swing or not he got hit by s pitch right?
If he swings it counts as him trying to hit the ball so it's a strike. Plus he swung so it would of been a strike even if it hadn't hit him
Best player in the game,THAT'S THEIR OPINION....
I would have deferred to the M&M's Yellow Nascar Jacket Guy
What did Cabrera even say
The home plate umpire made a bad call. Chris Sale threw the baseball and baseball hit Miguel Cabera's right foot.
Announcers: OMG, our best player just got thrown out cause he wouldn't stop arguing with the umpire but it's the umpires fault. These guys are a joke. Blame anybody but the one responsible just cause he's a talented player.
Except Cabrera wasn't even yelling. He was completely conversational, and it was the first inning.
***** I never said yelling. It can still be arguing without raising your voice. Judgment calls are not open for dispute.
***** But at some point you have to STOP. Cabrera kept going. Even after another pitch was thrown. The umpire gave him some leeway to say his piece but he didn't know enough to stop.
Scott Marty I think the ump just knew he was wrong, and had a short fuse to save face. It happens all the time.
Knew he was wrong? You can't dispute check swings after the strike call has been made. You cannot argue it, it is in the rulebook and he did let him to know to stop. If you noticed, he cut it out started again after being warned. If the umpire let this go on it would be a long day.
Umps like this need to be banned from the game. They are an embarrasment to the sport.
The home plate umpire was (#9/Brian Gorman)
Yeah, he's the best player of the game, according to the broadcasters. Do they think that makes him immune to ejection? Give me a break. Bias always kills intelligent baseball.
Yea but he shouldn't have been ejected in the first place
He wasnt just the best player in the game at that point, he was the first triple crown winner in 45 years. The people who bought tickets wanted to see him play. To throw him out of the game in first inning because you didn't do what 95% of umpires do and call down to first, is absolutely ridiculous
You simply just don't toss miggy
Funny how the same umpires crop up in these MLS.com videos, isn't it? :P
Jimmy got 5 steps into the tunnel before he lit up a Marlboro Red 😂
Yo, Leyland is great and Imma let ya finish, but Earl Weaver could thrown out of a game quicker than anybody
Wtf why was he thrown out he didn't say anything.
Umpires and instint replay are destroying the game and it's not getting better
I am guessing Miggy was just being a smart ass after the foul ball asking if that was a strike or if he swung there. But that's just my guess. I hope he didn't cuss him out.
you don't throw out the reigning MVP for something as petty as that.
I wish Jim Leyland wouldve punched the umpire in the face.
Sox*
Jaja este no ve beisbol...
BruinsChampions2011 He meant the game of baseball because what he said was truth. Cabrera at this point in his career had already won an MVP and was getting another that season so during this he was, in fact the best player in the game, league, and all of baseball.
He also had won the triple crown which hadn't been done in like 40 years.
