Unfortunately, I live in Central Texas and it is just so blazing hot in the summer time, i don't think they would be able to take it. Hi Rick and Jen (Camera girl), I am so happy to see you both in action as you do this video. You're a pro in orchid growing and I still need to learn much more. I love your confidence in how strong your orchids are due to how the nutrients are administered... It is amazing to learn from one another in the orchid community... Be blessed guys and keep them coming! 😻
Today, I just have to tell you-- I am so glad you're back on RUclips! I know I said it on your first video back, but Everytime I get a notification, I'm just so grateful you're back. I'm not sure I've heard Jan's voice before, so that was such a nice surprise. I know you spoke about her often in the past about becoming a nurse and health and etc, but I'm not sure I've heard her in one of your videos! But what I couldn't help but think while I was watching today was how positive, gentle, and kind the two of you are. Ive always watched you because you spoke about fertilizing in a way I could understand... And honestly, I liked your voice and speech pattern so I just found your videos relaxing beside being so informative. But the 2 of you together was just heartwarming. I wish you both only good things. What genuinely good ppl.
thanks for sharing Rick! alll the best.. i'd consider moving all the latouria dendrobium ie Roy Tokunaga into as small a pot as you can contain it in...They really prefer their roots to be confined and their pseudobulbs confined
What a wonderful video! Your orchids look so healthy and it amazes me how the leaves look so fungus free! I’m back to growing orchids after taking 2-3 years off and I’m so happy to see your channel again! Looking forward to watching future orchid videos! 😊
Such a treat ! Such a treat to hear Jan’s voice & please tell her she’s an excellent camera girl! Thank you Jan. Rick Your videos are so down to earth whether it’s hearing about hose rinsing the lava rock, sharing water amongst plants, sterilizing everything UN necessarily … all just common sense. CALCIUM being the BIG factor. I ‘ve adapted/ changed my orchid care years ago bc of what I have learned from you.. I give mine calcium a lot & ur right, they need it to be healthy & strong. It’s a simple thing to do. One other thing, that dear birdsong is lovely to hear but I can’t identify what bird is the opera singer in ur yard but he’s sure happy! Thanks so very much for all the knowledge you give to us in caring for our orchids. I know all ur other subscribers echo my thoughts.👍
Jan and I both thank you for the kind words....I think it was a cardinal that was singing its heart out.....and I really love to hear of others success with thier orchids, keep up the great work,
The plants are thriving and in great shape! I appreciate the shoutout and the valuable information you provide. Your knowledge is consistently enlightening and enjoyable.
Hi Jen & Rick, it was nice to hear you both together! Your garden grows well and the orchids grow even better! I love those new growths on your cattleyas and the encyclia too. Thanks for sharing this update and have a great weekend. Happy growing
What a great surprise hearing you and Jan! ❤ I am so happy you both doing well and enjoying life together as much as you can. That’s my goal too! Your orchids do grow so well, and how wonderful you follow the plants for the start, this way we all see the updates. Beautiful I enjoy it very much. Thank you both. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. O and thank you for mentioning the great channels, there were a few I didn’t know yet. I will get over and support them too !
🙋🏾♀️Hello, Rick and Jan. You two are sweet souls. Rick, I have all the equipment to mount dendrobiums and phalenopsis orchids. I've acquired a drill and attachments to buzz holes in ceramic and terracotta pots. Thank you so much for inspiring me to dive deeper into growing orchids. Date: June 15, 2024, from Columbus, Georgia.
Hehheheh the " dirty nails" comment 😂. Are our nails ever clean? Gardeners are always in the dirt! So happy to see your new set up snd everything!!!❤ Super cool hearing from your wife!!! ( I yabber on about orchids to my husband too and he bears with me😂)
Hi Rick and camera girl Jan…. Jan great job with the camera work! Rick with your videos, you have really answered questions that I had a hard time finding answers too! The calcium importance, potting medium and how it is only for stability etc. Thanks for what you have done. I truly appreciate it.
Jan, you did a great job! Rick, I can’t believe you have a C. walkeriana that was a bag baby! I could only be so lucky to find one at my local home improvement store, which is the only place I can occasionally find bag babies.
I really look forward and white for you to do a video I so enjoy your pictures and your talks and I'm really excited every time you post one please keep up the good work as you do reach many people and many people do enjoy your participation in the orchid world as well as the good advice that you give thank you
Hi Rick, What else can cause leaf tip die back besides calcium deficiency? I use MSU fertilizer and CalMag when I water. When I flush, I use my well water, which veries from 60-100ppm. Here are a few other facts, I use mostly self watering pots because my climate is extremely dry. The average annual percentage of humidity is 0%, yes that's correct. We average only 8 inches of precipitation (rain + snow) per year. I grow strictly indoors and run a humidifier 24/7 in my grow area and still can only achieve 30-35% humidity. I use mostly a combination of leca, lava rock, and pumice for media, although I do have some orchids in rePotme All Purpose Monterey Bark Imperial Orchid Mix.
........thats a very good question.....if you read the label on your MSU....what is the % of Nitrogen vs the % of calcium?.....you want them close to the same %.....adding the calmag will help offset it.......but it may not be enough......other than that, too much nutrients or salts can cause leaf tip burn.......Does your well water have a lot of iron in it by chance?......
@rickl.orchids My MSU fertilizer has... 13% Nitrogen as 0.17% Ammoniacal Nitrogen and 12.5% Nitrate Nitrogen 3% Available Phosphate 15% Soluble Potash 8% Calcium 2% Water Soluble Magnesium 0.177% Iron and minute amounts of Boron, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, and Zinc. The CalMag solution I use with the MSU has... 1% Nitrate Nitrogen 5% Calcium 1.5% Magnesium 0.1% Iron So total between the two is... 14% Nitrogen and 13% CaIcium. I mix them with distilled water. I do also add some kelp with the fertilizer. My well water that I use for flushing is filtered and has extremely little iron. On the drinking water test strips that I use, iron is 0 total hardness 25 total alkalinity 20 carbonate 20 pH is 6.6 and all other readings are 0 or next to nothing.
Great to hear from you again Rick, and Jan. I just want to thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and experience with of us through the years. It's so helpful and your orchids are great examples of practicing what you preach!. Speaking as a plant pathologist, I agree with you that healthy vigorous plants tend to be less susceptible to diseases and insects than those that are less than healthy. Happy to hear things are going well for both of you. And please keep the great, informative videos coming!
So awesome to hear (and see - hey, Rick) that both of you are doing so good. 6 years cancer free is amazing, Jan! I think I never really commented much before the 4 year break in videos but I'll try to leave comments now whenever I can. Both my cattleyas and the Phalaenopsis loved it when I had them in clay pots. I'll definitely do more clay (and wood baskets), and less plastic now, as my new collection is slowly growing. I also started adding calcium carbonate to the feed. Will see how well that works out. I love all your videos about fertilizing, because you have a great way of explaining, but it just does not want to stick with my brain. I'm a hopeless case, lol. Anyhow, thanks for another great update! Have a wonderful weekend!
@@rickl.orchids aww thanks! That my Rhodesian Ridgeback/Labrador mix girl Zoé. Had her since was 6 weeks old she just turned 12 years old last month. They grow old way too fast. I always loved seeing your dogs, especially Angus, in the videos.
So nice to meet you Jan! Hello Mr. Rick! It's a beautiful day to be outside enjoying the Orchids. Everything looks amazing 😍. I'm going to try my hand at growing another Cattleya. The Corona Green Genie. My first one ,Potinara Hawaii Charisma is doing well. I potted it up in river rock and a few pieces of large bark. Grew it from a bare root seedling 🌱. I'm just a windowsill grower. Closest I get to putting them outside is opening the window for them.
Always good to see your channel. Nice to hear both voices. @hillbillyorchids Paula and I were just chatting about Enc. Rioclance she got one as bag baby. Wish we have those in WA.
It isnt the plants mi'lady we love. We like the plants. We love you two. You both sound so good. Rick seems to be doing particular well. His speech is much improved. What are you all doing with the space in the brick area that is bare? Bet some snaps beans and maters would do well there.
Y’all both sound wonderful! So thrilled you are doing so well, Jan. The orchids are all just stunning. Can’t wait to see all the blooms. What nursery do you use? Thank 14:47 you both for starting my day in such a wonderful way! Have a good day.
thank you so much Lisa......these are all bag babies from Lowes....and a couple of Phalaenopsis from Traders Joes. I wish we had an orchid nursery nearby......but we dont.
So glad to hear both of you are doing so well. Jan, you make an awesome “Camera Girl”, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I’m jealous that you can get bag babies, my “store” has not had a shipment in over a month. And we have three of those “stores”!
Great video brother 👍 glad to see you Jan! 😊 you guys are awesome! Great update! I did enjoy all the updates on your Instagram! I love those roots and growths! 😊 great weekend video! 😁
Hello. The recommendation to not share water between pots is not so much about fungal or bacterial infections, which are indeed induced by poor growing conditions and that a healthy plant can fight of... It's about viruses, and no matter how healthy a plant is, if it's viral it won't get rid of it and is an innoculum for the rest of the collection even when asymptomatic. A viral plant won't necessarily show symptoms at first, but they will slowly fade over a period of several years, and a minimal stress will prove fatal. It's not so much an issue at a personal level, one can always throw and start a new collection from scratch if it gets viral. When one starts swapping or selling their plants with others, it becomes problematic ... We've had (and still have) the problem with the genera pleione : 20 years ago, some plants were showing random discolored spots on the flowers, which would not necessarily occur the next year. Some were worried it seemed characteristic of a viral behavior, but every growers and sellers were claiming those were the result of poor cultivation, or stressful climatic conditions. Results : everyone has swapped, sold, crossed, sown some of those at some point, and in doing so, everyone has introduced the Flower Breaking Virus in their collection (which is now identified as a potyvirus). And now there isn't a commercial stock which is not contaminated, we've lost dozens of grexes, some which cannot be recreated because the parent species just don't exist anymore in cultivation. Worse, we found in field testing that contamination occurs not only through pests, but also though water and even by leaves rubbing, and the cherry on top, we successfully transmitted it to other generas, namely phalaenopsis, oncidiums, miltonias and cattleyas. I could accommodate myself of a few discolored spots on flowers some years, if it were only that, but the plants do get weaker and weaker through time. The same issue occured in the past with ORSV and CymV virus, was the lesson learnt? Sadly, no. Orchids are indeed tough plants, but that argument is flawed because it doesn't take into consideration that if it's true for wild orchids, it doesn't apply to plants in cultivation, none of the orchids we grow would have survived in the wild. Most are hybrids which have been bred only for the showiness of their flowers, without any regard for their general fitness for wild conditions (which is why some will literally kill themselves overblooming) As for botanic species, the stock we have has been grown artificially for decades. In the wild, only 1 or 2 seedlings of a whole seedpod would survive, in nurseries we get 80% survival, which is good for cultivation, but we should not delude ourselves into thinking those plants are tough, they are not wild survivors and most of them would not have passed natural selection...
@@rickl.orchids the issue is spreading diseases, only the problematic diseases in question are not the fungal and bacterial infections that a well cultivated plants can fight off, but the viral ones that it cannot. Sharing water passes the viruses from one pot to the others, regardless how healthy and well cultivated the plants seems, and since we have no way to know which plant is viral and which is not, it's a high risk of contaminating the whole lot, even more when you regularly add new plants. One can be willing to risk infecting their own collection for practical reasons (it's a hassle when watering to be careful to it), but it's a valid choice only if that person never swap or sell plants from that stock, because then they would also risk to unwillingly contaminate someone else's collection. Also one particular plant might resist to some extent to a virus and keep on living with it, but the next plant might not have the same resilience
I'm so glad you're both doing ok..❤ I don't normally comment but I love your channel and have learnt so much from you, thank you so much! Those plants are so very healthy too..! 😍 🪴💚
@@rickl.orchids I know..! Hahaha!! I was so sad when you gave up your orchid collection because I was also going through a rough time so I really prayed you guys would be ok. I was very happy when you restarted and even happier to hear you both are doing better now, so here's to hope, hanging in there and happy plants! 🥂🪴😊
Rick, looks great. What was the name of that first Dendrobium that was spiking. I want to get one. All the new growths look great. I'm west of Seattle. Our sun and warmth is 2 months behind you. God bless your wife. Wonderful she is cancer free.
thank you very much Richard......we are very blessed.......That is the one dendrobium I have that is a NOID.......it was on the dead rack at a Lowes.....I believe its a Dendrobium Phalaenopsis......when the bloom opens, maybe we can get an ID.......its one of the biggest Dendrobiums I have seen......very large canes.
At 5:28..the BC on frame, are there some patches on the leaves of this Catliya. I too have some patches on leaves of one or two dendrobium dendrobiums of mine. Is this symptoms of any nutrient deficiency? Can you please address this.
I went back and reviewed the video....if your speaking of the dark edge along the leaf.....thats physical damage from rubbing on the stake it was attached to or the plastic package it came out of...there is some light mottling in the older leaves.....probably from low pottasium or nitrogen prior to purchasing....after some good feeding it should be fine........good eye though.....I think its important to train your eyes to see those things in our plants.
So happy to have found you. And now with your wife. Im fairly new to orchids. I love dendrobiums but find them difficult, pest magnets. Any advice please?
Welcome and thank you......I'm sure we can fix this......Dendrobiums are an easy grower, very hardy, like most orchids....what type of pests?....spider mites, mealybugs, scale?...are you inside or outside?......what do you feed them?.......and how are they potted....describe one of your plants pot/set up.
Very informative as always Rick! I'm about to try MSU fertilizer.... (I think 🤔) little nervous about it. Any special tips on this? Been using Better Gro for years. Happy Father's Day 💐 ❤️ Growing orchids in the desert here. 🎋🌵🎋
thanks Sharon......MSU is a very good nutrient mix...a step up from Bettergrow......feed them small amounts often......and remember to flush them often as well.......give them calmag with your flushing water to off set the lower calcium in the MSU mix.
I love calcium. I had recently gotten sick of looking at one of my phalanopsis spikes with that yellow dye back area. So I doubled my marine aquarium salt and tripled my calcium. I'm sure that sounds scary to some, maybe even you, but I had my reasons. It worked, I now have that sharp line of green and then dead.
@rickl.orchids Rick I don't know how much you'll find. Cory over at Aquarium co op talked about it a little bit. I don't know if he stumbled over my channel, read one of my comments, or maybe came up with the idea independently. I don't know. All I know is i've been trying to figure this out longer than Corey, or any of the three of us have had a channel. Recently, I thought maybe it's just the aquarium water by itself, and i'm imagining things. But when I boosted the dosages, the phalanopsis responded, and nothing except may be the fiddle leaf fig went downhill. People say i'm crazy But most of my plants say just the opposite.
thank you.....Vigoro is the brand.....its in .05 cu/ft bags......www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-0-5-cu-ft-Bagged-Decorative-Stone-Red-Lava-Landscape-Rock-440897/100427379
Thanks for another great video, Rick and Jan. I was looking up and subscribing to the channels you mentioned, but can’t find, “Garden Full of Colour”. I don’t know why, but could you please post a link to that channel?
Rick great video as always. I have been struggling to get rid of scale for over a year now. Do you have any suggestions to get rid of scale? Thank you.
.....good question......scale is a tough pest to deal with, its probably one of the only times I would use a insecticide on orchids......try neem oil first......it really works well on scale and is absorbed by the plant as well....and keeps them from restarting....its also organic and wont harm the orchids .. ...if that didnt work, ....try a spray with Malathion.....easy to find at any garden center......Many insecticides can harm orchids.....so try the neem oil first.......its great stuff. Spray them and then wipe off as many as you can the next few days... ... Calcium is vital to an orchids proper growth and really keeps them tough and pest resistant.....so keep them supplied with calcium all the time.
...Thank you.....when I water, I let them sit and soak for 20 minutes......then swap those orchids out for some more.........the pots, the lava, the roots all soak up water and stay damp for several days......then I give them several days of dry cycle and repeat the process......so once every 5-7 days.........but, I can water them, more often if I want.....the more I water,... the more I can feed them......lots of air flow with inert medias, they never get to wet....
@@rickl.orchids Thank you, Rick. I do appreciate your videos and your willingness to share what you have learned. I've been growing orchids for years and was of the mindset if you just feed and water them they'll do ok. Guess that's why mine took forever to do anything. Thanks again for your insight. Have a great evening and a blessed Father's Day.
.....what type of orchid?.....Hormones are what control plants growth, even the blooming....most orchids need to be mature to begin reproductive mode/ or blooming phase...., they need to be well fed, and some need certain nutritional or enviormental requirements to induce blooms.....Hormones are also triggered by things like..... like temperature changes.., or shorter days, less light, .....some require lots of nitrogen......give me some information......Im sure we can fiqure this out......and get you some blooms.
Mr. Rick, I do have an orchid question ❓ My Potinara Hawaii Charisma I get as a bare root seedling is doing very well. My first Catt. I got her 2 years ago. The last growth is 10 inches. When can I expect blooms? I think she is still too young. Maybe 2 more years? I've read that some take up to 4 or 5 years to bloom. Thanks 🙏.
......if thats your first "full size" mature growth, you could possibly get a bloom from it, but usually 2nd mature growth starts the reproductive process....but, you obviously have given it very good care,... to take it from a seedling to a mature plant....well done!.......remember none of this bloom timing is written in stone.....lots of variables, especially with hybrids like yours......Cattleyas bloom more from response to light, days getting shorter and less light intensity....than from temperature ....continue with your great care and she will bloom for you.
.......actually it doesnt......when I water them....I let them sit and soak for 15-20 minutes.....then I swap them out......the pots, the media, the roots all get well hydrated and soak up the moisture.....they stay damp for ..3-4 days....then I let them stay dry for a few days.....so to answer....maybe every 5-7 days I water.....but they never get to wet....so I can water more if I want....even with our temps in the 90's and 3 days over 100*.....
.....great question......when I water them....I let them sit and soak for 15-20 minutes.....then I swap them out......the pots, the media, the roots all get well hydrated and soak up the moisture.....they stay damp for several days...3-4 days....then I let them stay dry for a few days.....so to answer....maybe every 5-7 days I water.....but they never get to wet....so I can water more if I want....
Hi Rick. Is the lava rock you use the same as fire pit or bbq rock? The horticultural lava rock I find is so small not the larger chunks you fine. Same issue trying to fine pumice rock. Thanks.
I love EJ's channel....he is a very good grower and has a wonderful set up.......If pumice was available where I live, I would use it......Its slightly lighter than lava, but basically the same....Lava and pumice both will absorb moisture and stay damp for several days.....I would use it if its available to you.
@@LizE2654 a great question...Pumice is puffed up...like perlite, or leca beads, which are puffed clay.....it has a 65% -85% porosity.....and most of it floats beacuse of it......Lava is a little bit denser, Lava is formed when molten lava flows down a volcano and cools on the land. Pumice is created during violent volcanic eruptions when frothy molten lava cools rapidly, trapping air bubbles in its rough surface. .. .Now then....I have only used lava rock.....Ive never used pumice, so I cant answer honestly about its wicking abilities...sorry.......Wicking would only be important if your growing in a semi hydroponic way........I soak my orchids for 20 minutes when I water them.... and then they stay damp for several days.
Not tired of listening to your valuable information. Keep telling us. On one of your earlier videos, maybe 4 or 5 years ago, you have a Cattleya growing on a BRICK 🧱 ! Anyone that can grow an orchid on a brick , I wish listen to. You orchids look amazing. They aren't eaten up by pests. They didn't look ratty and sick. Seriously, you have the most perfect looking orchids. I going to start flushing my orchids in CalMag.
such a smile you gave me today!....thank you.....Calmag is great stuff......Its dark here now....and I just came inside from spraying mine with calmag......

I cant thank you enough for the kind words.......it means so much to both of us.....
I love the little moss that grows on them it gives them a more wild look to them ❤
thank you.
thanks for sharing Rick! alll the best.. i'd consider moving all the latouria dendrobium ie Roy Tokunaga into as small a pot as you can contain it in...They really prefer their roots to be confined and their pseudobulbs confined
.....thanks Terry.......Ive heard that...
What a wonderful video! Your orchids look so healthy and it amazes me how the leaves look so fungus free! I’m back to growing orchids after taking 2-3 years off and I’m so happy to see your channel again! Looking forward to watching future orchid videos! 😊
.....very kind thank you....I happy your getting back into the orchids again.
loving all you share, Jan continued prayers. Thank you for sharing those channels will check them out.
thank you.

Date: June 15, 2024, from Columbus, Georgia.
thank you for the kind words.......Im so happy your making your own pots and having a good time with your orchids......be careful, wear gloves!
howdy rick! glad you both are doing well, and thanks for the shout-out...your plants look super happy, as always. hope you had a great weekend

Hehheheh the " dirty nails" comment 😂. Are our nails ever clean? Gardeners are always in the dirt! So happy to see your new set up snd everything!!!❤ Super cool hearing from your wife!!! ( I yabber on about orchids to my husband too and he bears with me😂)
lol.....I agree, and thank you so much my friend.
Hi Rick and camera girl Jan…. Jan great job with the camera work! Rick with your videos, you have really answered questions that I had a hard time finding answers too! The calcium importance, potting medium and how it is only for stability etc. Thanks for what you have done. I truly appreciate it.
......thank you so much for the encouraging words.......it means so much.
Jan, you did a great job! Rick, I can’t believe you have a C. walkeriana that was a bag baby! I could only be so lucky to find one at my local home improvement store, which is the only place I can occasionally find bag babies.
Hey there Rick & Jan, i wish you both are having a nice day and weekend.
Glad to see you both again. 🎉🎉🎉
thank you......have a great weekend.
I really look forward and white for you to do a video I so enjoy your pictures and your talks and I'm really excited every time you post one please keep up the good work as you do reach many people and many people do enjoy your participation in the orchid world as well as the good advice that you give thank you
That means a lot.....thank you!
@rickl.orchids My MSU fertilizer has...
13% Nitrogen as 0.17% Ammoniacal Nitrogen and 12.5% Nitrate Nitrogen
3% Available Phosphate
15% Soluble Potash
8% Calcium
2% Water Soluble Magnesium
0.177% Iron
and minute amounts of Boron, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, and Zinc.
The CalMag solution I use with the MSU has...
1% Nitrate Nitrogen
5% Calcium
1.5% Magnesium
0.1% Iron
So total between the two is...
14% Nitrogen and 13% CaIcium.
I mix them with distilled water. I do also add some kelp with the fertilizer.
My well water that I use for flushing is filtered and has extremely little iron. On the drinking water test strips that I use, iron is 0
total hardness 25
total alkalinity 20
carbonate 20
pH is 6.6
and all other readings are 0 or next to nothing.
Rick, that really means alot coming from you......thank you!
Thanks guys! great looking orchids! You have a loud cardinal in your backyard :)
lol....thank you.......usually lawn mower or leaf blower......but he was singing his heart out.
We love having you both back!
.....thank you Kathy!
Aren't they a sweet couple! 💗 Like I know them. 😂 It's like they live next door to you and you borrow honey and swap plants and orchids !
So happy you and you wife are doing great , I am so grateful to Rick sharing with us the knowledge about the orchids 🫂♥️
.....thank you......my pleasure......I love to help others grow these beautiful plants.
Have a wonderful weekend!
thanks Tina, very kind words.....I love the doggy in your photo.....what a sweety!
@@rickl.orchids aww thanks! That my Rhodesian Ridgeback/Labrador mix girl Zoé. Had her since was 6 weeks old she just turned 12 years old last month. They grow old way too fast. I always loved seeing your dogs, especially Angus, in the videos.
What a sweet video! God bless you both. He has a lot of fans of his vids. They are very informative and educational as well. 😀
thank you so much.......means a lot!
Hi Rick… happy to know you’re doing well. Keep on taking it easy and recover ❤
Jan, I’m sorry about the misunderstanding, first timer
thank you so much for the kind words.
Hello my friend....I love the cattleya's.....the blooms are incredible and they are such tough thick growers......you will do great with another.
Always good to see your channel. Nice to hear both voices. @hillbillyorchids Paula and I were just chatting about Enc. Rioclance she got one as bag baby. Wish we have those in WA.
We was Yoshi! I did get that encyclia! I was shocked we got bag babies! Like I said last time was a decade ago! 😂
thank you......great seeing you here!
Hi Jan and Rick. Very nice video and I enjoyed watching. Happy Father’s Day Rick. Thank you for all your great information on growing orchids. 🥰🤗❤️
....thanks Shirley!
You promoted Melissa's channel, and Melissa was the one who was talking about your channel. It's how I found you.

It isnt the plants mi'lady we love. We like the plants. We love you two. You both sound so good. Rick seems to be doing particular well. His speech is much improved. What are you all doing with the space in the brick area that is bare? Bet some snaps beans and maters would do well there.
.....your so very kind and thank you........your right some beans going in soon.....
Thank you both!! Great to see y’all are doing good! Thank you for listing the new channels also. God bless and have a great weekend.

You are both awesome love your videos from australia xxx

So glad to hear both of you are doing so well. Jan, you make an awesome “Camera Girl”, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I’m jealous that you can get bag babies, my “store” has not had a shipment in over a month. And we have three of those “stores”!
We "never" have them in Arizona! 😒
.......thank you......bag babies are scarce here as well....very slim selections if they have any.
Well then it must be company wide. I may have to start looking on the internet. 🤷♀️

Most are hybrids which have been bred only for the showiness of their flowers, without any regard for their general fitness for wild conditions (which is why some will literally kill themselves overblooming)
As for botanic species, the stock we have has been grown artificially for decades. In the wild, only 1 or 2 seedlings of a whole seedpod would survive, in nurseries we get 80% survival, which is good for cultivation, but we should not delude ourselves into thinking those plants are tough, they are not wild survivors and most of them would not have passed natural selection...
.....then what is the issue from sharing water......if not spreading disease?
thank you so much.......please comment, ask questions.....the best growers hang out here.
@@rickl.orchids I know..! Hahaha!! I was so sad when you gave up your orchid collection because I was also going through a rough time so I really prayed you guys would be ok. @@petrichor7121 .....big smile here......thank you my friend!
I went back and reviewed the video....if your speaking of the dark edge along the leaf.....thats physical damage from rubbing on the stake it was attached to or the plastic package it came out of...there is some light mottling in the older leaves.....probably from low pottasium or nitrogen prior to purchasing....after some good feeding it should be fine........good eye though.....I think its important to train your eyes to see those things in our plants.
are the issues on your dendrobium on the edge of the leaf or tip?
where do the lovely boxes come from? love love love
I make those......from cedar.....very simple box with holes for roots and airflow...
Well, THAT explains my skinny phal leaves...
.......Thanks Betty......there will be some genetics at play.....but light is the biggest factor with phal leaves and thier shape and size.
@@rickl.orchids oh, it's not genetics 😂
@@bettywilson6351 .......mine get lots of light.....its thru lattice, but they get lots of light....
@@rickl.orchids Thank you so much. I will do this. 👌
Victor, im unfamiliar with marine aquarium salt on orchids.....Ill have to look into that.......thanks
Awesome video! I enjoy your videos. What brand of lava rock do you use? I got one and got a lot of regular stones and a few lava rocks inside the bag
thank you.....Vigoro is the brand.....its in .05 cu/ft bags......www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-0-5-cu-ft-Bagged-Decorative-Stone-Red-Lava-Landscape-Rock-440897/100427379
Thanks for another great video, Rick and Jan. I was looking up and subscribing to the channels you mentioned, but can’t find, “Garden Full of Colour”. I don’t know why, but could you please post a link to that channel?
www.youtube.com/@gardenfullofcolour
Thank you.
Your orchids are looking so good and growing vibrantly. With using lava rocks, how often do you water and feed?
...Thank you.....when I water, I let them sit and soak for 20 minutes......then swap those orchids out for some more.........the pots, the lava, the roots all soak up water and stay damp for several days......then I give them several days of dry cycle and repeat the process......so once every 5-7 days.........but, I can water them, more often if I want.....the more I water,... the more I can feed them......lots of air flow with inert medias, they never get to wet....
@@johnmorgan4829 .....thanks John.....I bet we could have a great time talking growing over coffee.....blessings back my friend.
@@rickl.orchids That would be great.
Rick how do I get my false sheaths to actually contain buds? 😢
.....what type of orchid?.....Hormones are what control plants growth, even the blooming....most orchids need to be mature to begin reproductive mode/ or blooming phase...., they need to be well fed, and some need certain nutritional or enviormental requirements to induce blooms.....Hormones are also triggered by things like..... like temperature changes.., or shorter days, less light, .....some require lots of nitrogen......give me some information......Im sure we can fiqure this out......and get you some blooms.
Thanks, Mr. Rick! @@rickl.orchids
Hay Rick how do you know when to water when you grow in inorganic. Doesn't rock medium dry out after a few hours. Thanks
.......actually it doesnt......when I water them....I let them sit and soak for 15-20 minutes.....then I swap them out......the pots, the media, the roots all get well hydrated and soak up the moisture.....they stay damp for ..3-4 days....then I let them stay dry for a few days.....so to answer....maybe every 5-7 days I water.....but they never get to wet....so I can water more if I want....even with our temps in the 90's and 3 days over 100*.....
What's that loud bird ? 😁
......I believe its a cardinal...was singing his heart out
Hi Rick, with temps being 90s how often do you water catleyas? Thnx
.....great question......when I water them....I let them sit and soak for 15-20 minutes.....then I swap them out......the pots, the media, the roots all get well hydrated and soak up the moisture.....they stay damp for several days...3-4 days....then I let them stay dry for a few days.....so to answer....maybe every 5-7 days I water.....but they never get to wet....so I can water more if I want....
Hi Rick. Is the lava rock you use the same as fire pit or bbq rock? The horticultural lava rock I find is so small not the larger chunks you fine. Same issue trying to fine pumice rock. Thanks.
....yes.....I find it at Lowes, Home Depot......its used for gardens, bbq and fire pits, in large bags...they are around 30lbs
Sometimes, just stop being too paranoid about our orchids let them be what they want with fusarium or not. And just watch Mr. Rick L. ❤❤❤
thank you.....and yes, let them be orchids and grow.
Will it cause a sludge if you soak an orchid that has lime in the pot in an epsom salt soak?
......Ive never seen that.....Ive used dolomitic lime....but never with an epson salt bath.....It may possible.....cant say for sure
@@rickl.orchids Thank you.
Just a question about media. EJ from Orchid Saga loves pumice. What’s your opinion and how would you say it’s different from lava? Thanks
I love EJ's channel....he is a very good grower and has a wonderful set up.......If pumice was available where I live, I would use it......Its slightly lighter than lava, but basically the same....Lava and pumice both will absorb moisture and stay damp for several days.....I would use it if its available to you.
@@rickl.orchids does pumice wick better than lava because he does self watering and didn’t use a wick
@@LizE2654 a great question...Pumice is puffed up...like perlite, or leca beads, which are puffed clay.....it has a 65% -85% porosity.....and most of it floats beacuse of it......Lava is a little bit denser,
Lava is formed when molten lava flows down a volcano and cools on the land.
