6:26 Exactly the information I've been looking for. I recently picked several bag babies from Lowes clearance racks and they're all in fairly poor condition. At least they weren't crispy or mushy this time! 😂 I'll rig up a micro-climate for them and push them on. Thanks! Glad you and camera girl are back!
So good to see, and listen to you again! Glad you and your pretty camera girl are holding your own, it is great to hear...... I always learn so much watching and listening to your videos, each one posted highlights my day. Your orchids are amazing, the love and care you give to them is apparent in their health and growth. To you and Jan, blessed be......
Seems like it wasn't to long ago you brought them outside. Those bag babies are sure loving your care. They have grown and awesome blooms!! Blessings for Jan and You!! Glad she's doing okay. Keep us posted. Love hearing from you!!
Hi Rick, you Sir have got a green thumb. So glad to hear that your wife is doing well with what's going on. My Prayers are with you both. Prayer, Love and Hugs from Michigan Roxanne
Hi Rick nice to see you again nice growths, thanks for update always a pleasure watching your videos and good to hear that Jan is doing better. All the best for you both. Have a great WE.
Everything looks so wonderful with warmer and longer days but nature also needs a rest to get organized😊 So glad Jan is holding on, she is a person of an enormous animic strengh and strong personality. It is so good to meet people like her, they are an example to others, we are in need of deeds like this in the artificial world we live in. Hope you are holding on too Rick, you both are wonderful, you restore my faith in human true values.
......so very kind my dear friend.....hard to find words to say how much everyone has impacted my life...we both get our strength from our faith, from each other, and from our friends around us.....
Hi Rick, always lovely to find your posted videos and lovely to hear how you are both doing. I think my collection grows so well until I see yours down in the Alabama warmth and humidity. Please share what you potted up your hoyas in....would love to know as some of mine do well in sphagnum moss, some seemingly faltered in growth since I put them in moss....anything else you want to share about growing hoyas, too. They are my top favorites right behind orchids. Everything looks outstanding in your collection...especially that dendrobium with the root system lookin like it's on steroids. I will pray for Jans' Monday treatment, that the Lord uses the meds to obliterate all cancer cells and guards and keeps Jans' cells...that He uses the meds to build her strength and health, that the medicine obey His will for Jan....love in Christ to you both....Cara
......I always smile when I see your posts.....thank you for all your kindness and the many blessings. He truly has sent angels to help us thru this time........My hoyas are planted in a mix of potting soil and some cypress bark......they seem to thrive in it....
Hello Rick- I just love you talking about the plants and telling about everything. English is not my language, actually I would like to express how I feel about your guide how to manage with orchids. Anyway thank you so much!
Hi Rick and Jan, glad to hear all is going as expected, that's a good thing! Rick, the growth that still is happening and has happened is just amazing, your talents astound me ! I get the biggest kick when you mention fall is coming...lol..the foliage is in full swing and the frost warnings have been up 3x. I always start with 12 hours of added light, then each month knock off an hour until i get to 9 hours, then in January start adding an hour till they go outside again . Thanks for sharing and you're both in our thoughts and prayers . ...til the next time...Kelly in NH
As always, such a joy to watch your videos. I also brought my orchids inside, already have 1 celcius in the night. If only the 2 shelves units would arrive sooner... Your orchids grew exceptionally well this year! Congrats! You did a wonderful job! Sending my love and prayers for you and your wife!
Hello dearest orchid brother! 😄 WOW! Your plants are seriously awesome! That Sharry Baby is seriously seriously awesome! All those beautiful dendrobium blooms! I'm in awe! I need some more dens. I have one, I got 2 very large growths this year, thanks to the lime I'm sure 👌 I think it appears that each new growth is going to spike. So should have couple Burana Jade spikes! Can't wait. Been a little lax on care. The temperature change is affecting me worse than anticipated. Super glad to hear Jan is well! She is my HERO! Hugs, blessings and love from WV!
Wow, that Sharry Baby is GORGEOUS! I have two and neither one has ever bloomed like that! But then they haven't had your TLC either. Good to hear you and Jan are doing well, and thank you for sharing everything that you share! Your garden is beautiful as always!
Orchids looking fantastic Ricky, really beautiful and lush! So happy for you Jan that your treatments going well and your graduation, wonderful! I’m kinda hoping Ricky’s going to do a video of it to show us 🤞🤞🤞. Take care and love to you both from across the pond 😊
Your plants are such a blessing. I can imagine how much joy they bring you. I feel good seeing them and they aren’t even mine. It inspires me to keep trying and learning more. Praise the Lord your wife is doing so well. God willing she will put this all behind her soon. Take care and know that your videos bring joy to others.
Hello Rick! I hope that you are doing as well as possible. Your plants look lovely, as usual. Fall blooming is just here or around the corner. Thanksgiving is almost here. My favorite time of year because I have so very much to be thankful for. You are one of my blessings. My best to you and your sweet wife.💞
Rick I see you have a staghorn fern . I live in fort Myers Florida and grow mine out side year-round mine is huge. I feed mine bananas it loves then the whole banana or just the peels. It seems to trigger new pups. I also watch your RUclips on orchids I love all your advice and my orchids are so healthy. Can't thank you enough.
Rick L., thank you for sharing your findings of the connection of temperature and fragrance of mini phals. That makes sense to me. LOL. How many of us need the warmth of coffee to wake up and get percolating, too? Would you please respond with a list the woods you use? Yes, I'm imagining an orchid on wood hanging in front of a long window in my classroom. The anesthesia is finally lifting from my brain and creativity is reopening or returning. Please let us know when Jan will graduate in December, I know a novice orchid enthusiast who has a birthday in December who wants another reason to eat a second slice of cake. :-) Thank you for being so supportive to all of us out here. Looking forward to your next video visit. Take care.
thank you so much for the very kind words......i was surprised that Phals I bought in stores that had no fragrance.....started releasing fragrance after they came home with me and went outside......quite a few of them.... .....the woods i use now are cedar, cypress, and heart pine....or sap wood,.....they will grow on others.....but these are what i have and they seem to love....I will keep everyone informed of Jans graduation.......as well as her progress.........thank you again....
Hey! Thank you for the list! I appreciate it. I cannot imagine how busy you are. Just know that I appreciate getting this list. More wood for me to seek in the Peach State! Bless you all over there!
Absolutely love your orchid. Very healthy. Thank you for excellent video again. Glad to see you back. Beautiful flower. Appreciate your sharing information with us.
Hey #PhalPal Rick. Thanks for another great and informative video. I am one to chase the sun thinking the more sun and artificial light the better. I will leave them alone and see what happens. Also in Jasper we are in the high 90s low 70s so no fall temps here. Tell #PhalPal Jan I said hello and I named two of my orchids from the orchid show after you guys. Happy growing from your PhalPal Durrell
I went to Steele AL on the mountain for the weekend in the cabins. Their temperatures has dropped dramatically compared to where I live. Nevertheless, I have found a permanent place for my orchids to get accustomed to their surroundings. I’m going to start using my plant light while I sleep because my living room doesn’t get the sun it did in the spring and summer. Happy growing from your PhalPal Durrell
Beautiful dendrobiums. And so healthy looking. I'll bet they'll be the size of shrubs next summer! Keep posting! Love seeing you and your plants. Say 'hi' to Jan. Hugs to you both.
🛑I need to know what to do in lights at this time of the year? I’ve brought down my nutrition on them but how many hrs do I leave lights on? I’ve got mine inside the house! There all in spike fixing to open! I started in February of this year so haven’t been through winter rest yet. Trying to find your video on this can you direct me to the one that is helpful with this! 🤔. Wondering what I’ll do when you aren’t here to help me. You make things simple to understand n everything I’ve done from what you say has been great information thank you very much Rick 👍🏻👍🏻 hoping you an Jan get better an better you have sure had your share of heath issues sorry. May God blessings be with you today and forevermore 🙏🏼
Good to hear from you again, and greetz to Cookie from Frisia (and you too😁) . You are so right about scent, mine only give off a smell a few hours a day between just after first light in to the afternoon and then they stop
Hi Rick. I love your videos. I've learned so much from you and The Orchid Whisperer this year. I'm in Northern Alabama but I did not have my orchids outside during the summer. Last year my Vanada lived outside and she rebloomed for me last fall. This summer bugs kept getting on her, so I've kept her inside. She has some brown spots on her leaves, but has beautiful new leaves. What can I clean her leaves with? No flower spike on her this fall, yet. I rescued a phal from a friend yesterday. It only has three leaves, was in a southern window that also got western light. They rarely watered it, but after many months of not watering it, they watered it and it rebloomed! The flowers are gone now. One leaf has a white spot on it, like a sunburn? One leaf has 2 brown spots on it. The root system is Amazing!!! I'll repot and feed it. Should I remove the two damaged leaves, or just let them be? Any other advice for saving this phal? I hope you and Jan have a blessed week. Tammy
good day Tammy.......great questions.....I like to use lemon juice/water 50/50....to clean dirty leaves......neem oil works well as a a wipe also..........for the Phal.....leave the leaves till they yellow.......then trim.....To help it get growing well again.....give it some calmag and a little kelp/seaweed......will give it a needed boost.....Vandas and Phals both love calcium.......if a Vanda isn't hanging under a tree........you need to give it calcium.,...
Rick. Thank you for your most informative videos which, as a novice orchid grower, have given me a greater insight into orchid growing. I feel for you & Jan re your illnesses & hope things improve. In Sydney Australia, we are in Spring & am looking forward to the growth stage of my orchids. I have mounted most of them & they are showing good signs of root growth. You mention that you have planted many of your orchids in inorganic media such as pebbles, rock etc. Does this mean you don't have to replant (apart from accommodating growth) as is done with organic media? Keep up the good work .
......very kind words thank you Chris.....your correct.....all but 2 of my 135+ plants are in lava rock, river rock, or pea gravel....it doesn't rot, doesn't effect ph, doesn't build up nutrients or salt, and never needs re-potting.....unless its to a bigger pot.....so much easier than bark or moss in my opinion....
So glad to hear you guys are doing well! Always in my thoughts and prayers and congrats to Jan on her upcoming graduation! Love the update videos and love seeing all these healthy plants growing and spiking. Guess that means your keeping the Chan chao keiki? 😉
I have had a Cattleya bag baby since the late 90s and it really hasn't done anything for me. But I put it in lava rock I put the Dolomite lime and I've got two new gross maybe with luck I will have some flowers. Thank for the information.
I'm so glad Jan is progressing and doing so good! Must be a challenge with studying for the finish line! That is wonderful! I do have a question about your epiphytic cactuses/orchid. Do they like to be pot-bound in order to bloom? I do have three pots of different kinds that I kept out on the porch in a bright location. I have them inside now because I'm in zone 4. The nights are getting very chilly. They have put on a lot of growth.
.......she is a strong determined lady.....she is doing great........that's a great question on the cactus....Im not sure.....Ive only had mine for a few months.....but...most of their blooms are triggered by hormones which respond to light and temps.......not sure if being root bound would effect them much.....I have to go back to them growing in the wild......would they get root bound in nature?....
The first of October I started to put my Thanksgiving Cactus in the garage closet from 4 p.m. - 8 a.m. They need total darkness for 16-18 hours per day for about 6 weeks in order to bloom, at least that is what I've recently learned. :-) Mine is in the same pot it was in when I bought it last year.
you have a very nice orchids mine the leaves are falling yellowing i dont know what to do . im in the phils so i heard that you give them more calcium ,and magnesium so im going to try that
Good morning Rick, could you please give some of your great knowledge on nutrient. I have a sea of green no spike on my cats or dens or vandas just lovely green. Im now using a 4 -6-6 orchid fertilizer at about 250- 280 tds and at various ph levels and about 2 a month cal-mag at about 150-180 tds and at various ph levels. I am growing in leca semi hydro andfertilize every time i water which is about every 3 to 4 days. I m thinking of using a general plant fertilizer 20-20-20. What is your advice. Thanks again your videos are so educational have a great day.
....Maria.....I like your mix and routine.......dont change it....do you have good root growth?.....any salt residue collecting on lecca?.......are they staying clean?.......if not drop your ppm amounts......not sure of your temperatures or environment....Blooming is caused by hormones being triggered by light or temperature........nutrients wont make them bloom.......with your feed levels they should be able to bloom........may need to be more mature as well....
Good morning Rick thanks for the reply, I have very good root growth, and I flush about once a month i dont see any salt residue on the leca so i think they are staying clean, I live in Athens Greece, the temps here are still summer ones we now start off in the morning with about 17 and in the afternoon its about 24-25 in the evening it goes down to about 15-17. I think the problem might be the sun because all my orchids are a very dark green. Im afraid to put them outside because in the summer the temps reach 35-40 in the day and 30- in the evening. and its very dry. Ok thanks again and hope you and Jan keep doing well. Have a great day.
thnak you Mary......I feed them when ever they are actively growing.....any new growths, bulbs, canes, leaves, spikes, etc......the Max are planted in cypress chips with some lava rock mixed in......
Another very informative video Rick. Thank you! You said to take feeding down to 100-125ppm; what should I use to feed them in the winter? CalMag, Jungle Juice.. etc?
What fertilizer are you using on your Christmas cactus? Keep the vids coming you are my favorite source of info for plants. You and yours are in our prayers here and hope all continues to go well with the treatments. How are the AVs doing?
Watching your video reminds me that I have to give my orchids Calmag this weekend. Seeing your plants as healthy as they are inspires me to continue with this regimen. Put some Espoma on my hedge plants earlier in the week. We'll see how that affects their growth. What is the dosage of Espoma lime that you are giving the orchids? Since it is granular are you just putting it in the pots? Any issues with it just washing through the medium? Can you identify the dendrobium in your opening scene? It is a beautiful contrast in color. Thanks for the update on your wife. Curious as to how she senses improvements in treatments since her last bout with this disease. (We have a neighbor who is undergoing immunotherapy for cancer. She has been treated for breast and lung cancer in the past with radiation and chemo. Immunotherapy is new for her.) Appreciate your sharing of information.
thank you Pat.....I sprinkle it on them 1x month...about 1/2tsp on a 6" pot.....but they are outside and getting rained on......when they come inside it wont be quite as often......I find a little residual in the water .....its a fine powder........the Dendrobium is Burana Jade Yellow...has a nice fragrance when in warm temps ......Jan said the treatment is already easier than what she went thru before....
It's so nice to hear your voice today! Glad to know Jan is doing better. Question: my dendrbium stalks are turning dark brown, they did this last year also. I thought they were drying but nope 🤔. Is this a come occurence? These are not the nobile type. I have lost the tags a long time ago. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you 🌴
hi Rick.. with the way that you water.. in the basin are you also spraying the plants with fertiliser every few days..?? from what you are mentioning.. you must have them in fertilser every other day??
.....if your not using it.....when you do....you will see a dramatic growth of roots begin......10-12 drops per gallon......use it to water them or soak them in..........
Hey dearest, I was going to ask you if you have had any issues with mold? Now or when you first bring them in? One of my Cat's I used a cheap bark past spring, I started noticing mold so of course I had to repot. Well, not till I got it potted back up I noticed a sheath in the new growth. Did I mess up my chance at a bloom? I was just in so much pain I did it quick and should have paid more attention. I'm such an idiot! Would have been my first Cat bloom! Ugh hugs dear heart. Love and appreciate you!
hey orchid sis....you did right.....re-pot them and toss the bad media......I pot when they need it and dont loose blooms....mold is more from lack of airflow and damp conditions....a fan will correct both issues...sometimes young plants grow sheaths and not spikes......dont fret it........you have many blooms coming your way....feel better soon....
Hey dearest, oddly enough I have 2 large fans on them! It was just bad media! It was miracle grow orchid mix. Never again will I use it. Live and learn. Hugs, love and blessings from WV
Hey Baby!! On the upper right hand corner on a piece of wood you can see it between the dancing ladies and the pinkish dendrobium hanging up there it has a whole bunch of little leaves on it they look like little phalaenopsis leaves. What is that Rick? I absolutely adore that plant the way it looks. I will not continue to watch the rest of the video.👉👵👈
I dont have a sunroom so my orchids are going inside the house. So no growlights for me so i wont set them back. But what about heat mat? Should i use it?
Okay I finished watching your video. Yay! Everything is doing beautiful! Mine are as well I have five things in spite. And my original Vanda gave me nine beautiful flowers and now they're almost spent. I have a very important question what percentage is your shade cloth? Please give my love and many kisses to Jan I love you guys!! 👉👵👈
Does the weather in Alabama ever get any different then what we see or do you live in a micro climate 😉 (our days are in the 60/70 and nights fall to below 50 already 🐧
Rick, will you continue with the garden lime and calmag over the winter once they are inside. Enjoy your videos. Started using garden lime about 8 weeks ago. Wow, did I get growth. Just confused about winter here in Illinois.
...a good question......yes,I will continue to use the Garden lime as well as the calmag......the lime I may not apply as often ....as outside.......will have to see how often I water.....
.....it is,, but never hurts to repeat some things.....I sprinkle 1/2tsp of Espoma Garden Lime around a 6" pot about every 3-4 weeks......my orchids are outside and they get rained on a lot......may not need it as often if watered less...I also use Calmag on my plants.....around 80-100ppm....or 10-12 drops/per gallon water
6:26 Exactly the information I've been looking for. I recently picked several bag babies from Lowes clearance racks and they're all in fairly poor condition. At least they weren't crispy or mushy this time! 😂 I'll rig up a micro-climate for them and push them on. Thanks!

Thanks for making a video updating us on your plants and your family's health. I'd love to see a closer look at your Tolumnias when you get a chance.
thanks Heather....will show them soon, they are doing well.....tons of root growth and some new fans growing...
......thank you Patrick.......yes, Im keeping it to start another plant, its one of my favorites......but keep checking back....one day......
I have had a Cattleya bag baby since the late 90s and it really hasn't done anything for me. But I put it in lava rock I put the Dolomite lime and I've got two new gross maybe with luck I will have some flowers. Thank for the information.
....love to hear that.....wonderful Victoria......I bet you get blooms soon.
Where do you get lava rock?
Learned something new...thanks
Excellent information. Can you site some references for the lime? I worry about burning the plants. Glad all is stable for you and Jan.
Mary Im using Espoma brand Garden Lime.....about 1/2tsp sprinkled on a 6" pot...Walmart, Lowes, Home depot......most garden centers should have it...
:-) Mine is in the same pot it was in when I bought it last year.
you have a very nice orchids mine the leaves are falling yellowing i dont know what to do . im in the phils so i heard that you give them more calcium ,and magnesium so im going to try that
Thank you sir!
Good morning Rick, could you please give some of your great knowledge on nutrient. I have a sea of green no spike on my cats or dens or vandas just lovely green. Im now using a 4 -6-6 orchid
fertilizer at about 250- 280 tds and at various ph levels and about 2 a month cal-mag at about 150-180 tds and at various ph levels.
The blooms are magnificent! when do you stop feeding? What is maxillaria been planted on?
thnak you Mary......I feed them when ever they are actively growing.....any new growths, bulbs, canes, leaves, spikes, etc......the Max are planted in cypress chips with some lava rock mixed in......
Another very informative video Rick. Thank you! You said to take feeding down to 100-125ppm; what should I use to feed them in the winter? CalMag, Jungle Juice.. etc?
......ill be using calcium nitrate,15-0-0 and my Jacks 5-12-26.......I will use calmag as well.....in between feedings .....and yes around 125ppm...
Thanks again Rick. Are these fertilizers available in a smaller size? I'm only finding the 25 lbs bag.
Amazon had them in 4lb tubs......getting your water source as close to Zero makes it easier to mix nutrients as well as prevent root issues....
Really? Can you share the link? I have an RO/DI system and I can get 0 total dissolved solids out of it.
What fertilizer are you using on your Christmas cactus? Keep the vids coming you are my favorite source of info for plants. You and yours are in our prayers here and hope all continues to go well with the treatments. How are the AVs doing?
thank you my friend.......Jacks 20-20-20.....Ill update the violets soon.
Immunotherapy is new for her.) Appreciate your sharing of information.
thank you Pat.....I sprinkle it on them 1x month...about 1/2tsp on a 6" pot.....but they are outside and getting rained on......when they come inside it wont be quite as often......I find a little residual in the water .....its a fine powder........the Dendrobium is Burana Jade Yellow...has a nice fragrance when in warm temps
......Jan said the treatment is already easier than what she went thru before....
Thank you 🌴
.........sounds like genetics or a reaction to environment......maybe strong light or temperature change....do they bloom after, or start new growths?
Hi Rick, are you interested in growing a night blooming cereus? They have an unbelievable scent and absolutely beautiful blossom..
i have seen them.....such a beautiful flower......
Rick L. Orchids They are very easy to propagate by just putting a leaf in soil. They seem to like same light conditions as orchids.
hi Rick.. with the way that you water.. in the basin are you also spraying the plants with fertiliser every few days..?? from what you are mentioning.. you must have them in fertilser every other day??
.....your close Chris.......every 2-3 days for sure......extra if it rains....its slowing down as temps drop.....but often.....
Gonna give this Cal Mg a try. :D
.....if your not using it.....when you do....you will see a dramatic growth of roots begin......10-12 drops per gallon......use it to water them or soak them in..........
👏👏👏like!
Hi Rick. I didn’t quite understand what is your source of calcium/magnesium ? What is the dosage?
I use a organic garden lime....sprinkled on the pots, ......I also use calmag around 80ppm or 10-12 drops per gallon.....
Thanks:)
Rick L. Orchids Rick, how much lime would you put in 4in. pot? Can you burn roots with excess of calcium?
Hey Baby!! On the upper right hand corner on a piece of wood you can see it between the dancing ladies and the pinkish dendrobium hanging up there it has a whole bunch of little leaves on it they look like little phalaenopsis leaves. What is that Rick? I absolutely adore that plant the way it looks. I will not continue to watch the rest of the video.👉👵👈
.......thank you Libby....that is Dendrobium aggregatum........easy grower.......
I dont have a sunroom so my orchids are going inside the house. So no growlights for me so i wont set them back. But what about heat mat? Should i use it?
I wouldn't use a heat mat.........as long as they are kept in a room 65*-75* they are fine....
👉👵👈
.....your collection looked beautiful in the pictures I saw....the shade cloth is 60%....for your area i would use 70%.......talk soon....
Does the weather in Alabama ever get any different then what we see or do you live in a micro climate 😉 (our days are in the 60/70 and nights fall to below 50 already 🐧
......we are headed that way........cool till December and then cold till March...then spring starts....
@@rickl.orchids how much lime do you put in each pot?
David......maybe 1/2 teaspoon on a 6"pot.......
I would love to buy a Sharibaby. Anybody got a suggestion for a good supplier. I don't think anyone sells locally.❤
..........I will keep a look out for one........usually in the fall is when I see them at the garden centers....
@@rickl.orchids ❤❤tks.. was watching new weather forecast dipping to 39 never fails 99 to 39 lol this weekend.
......Willa, Im right there with ya my friend......we were 88*.... 48hrs ago......dropping to 48* tonight...
@@rickl.orchids 😎
i hope everything is okay Rick, haven't heard from you in a while.
You talk about calcium all the time, but how much calcium? And how often? It’s probably back in an old video somewhere.
.....it is,, but never hurts to repeat some things.....I sprinkle 1/2tsp of Espoma Garden Lime around a 6" pot about every 3-4 weeks......my orchids are outside and they get rained on a lot......may not need it as often if watered less...I also use Calmag on my plants.....around 80-100ppm....or 10-12 drops/per gallon water
How often for CalMag? During winter also? Thank you.
......sorry I missed this.......anytime I give water they get calcium......if its not in the mix........I add cal mag.....
Where are you Rick ?
Hi rick plz help me
