Just started watching and had to stop at his "fair enough, my work is not good enough" when he had sent his folio to 90 studios and had ZERO response! What a boss for taking it so casually and just working even harder to get there. Massively inspiring for those, such as myself, who are on the verge of throwing in the towel at each hurdle! Thanks for this.

Andrew's story is so inspiring 😭 I've been working, for almost 4 years alone making skins for a particular game, publish over 30 items for that game but I wanna try something new but Im not confident enough to take that huge leap. I've been eyeing Bungie for some time but I still havent got the courage to actually try apply

I'd like to thank you both for this, this was so eye opening. It's very rare to have a look behind the curtains, but behind the curtains is where the real work gets done (or just the most of it). Got SO much info from this, i was tanking notes :D lol

Thank you Andrew, I am currently applying for Jobs in the 3D Industry (Finished 2 year Apprenticeship as a 3D-Developer used 3dsMax, Cinema4d, Maya and unity mostly and currently learning Blender). I realised after this video that I still don't really know if I want to go into games or into fully animated movies. So my Portfolio was kinda all over the place. After seeing what effort your guest put in to get a job in the industry, I guess I have to decided where I want to go first and then work on projects that target that specific niche, as well as rehaul my whole Portfolio obvs. I will definitely get that one month Maya and work on some projects there for my Portfolio, thanks for the tip!
I mostly love 3D for the modeling + animation aspect as well as setting the scene and rendering and making it look nice. If you have some more input about the pros and cons of games VS animated movies I am happy to listen & learn.

The one thing Andrew doesn't bring up is that a subscription to Maya is USD$1,700/year. Nuke is USD$5,518. And so on, and so on. You can say what you want about persistence and determination; those are, of course, required, but...the up-front costs (after the free 30-day trial runs out) are pretty darn high. Blender is free. Thoughts?

How do you determine your "bid days".
I often struggle with that where someone asks me how long it'll take to do something and I really struggle with quoting price or time and I really struggle with that.
How do you determine how long it'll take to do a task. What is your criteria for bidding. Like for instance, if I gave you a project with a house, do you take into account how long it'll take to make everything from scratch or do you try and assume that you'll find a house pack online and you bid according to that or like how do you determine bid days or time required. What is the criteria you use for determining this. Apologies if I've repeated myself in my question.
Another example, I've been asked by a friend to do an animation for his new lock, where I'll show the lock, how it's used and it's mechanism and the animation will most likely be around a minute at max. So now I need to make the gate, I downloaded a free factory model for the background, I've got the gate, the lock, the factory in the back ground and I'm still busy with it and the guy has asked me how much and how long do you need. My guess is it'll take around 2 weeks and I've given him a fairly low cost as it's one of my first real projects in blender, besides the part time projects that I've assigned myself. It's also my first animation, would 2 weeks be a realistic timeline or should I have allowed more time as I'm learning or less time. I don't know, as a fairly new blender user (I'm a converted 3ds max user).

I would like to say IMO that the reason to suggest blender over maya is the access and community. Yes industry standards exist...but they are often not inclusive or progressive. Houdini lets you learn and buy with reasonable access. Blenders Geomatry Nodes is an example of reaching beyond Maya and towards Houdini. Your portfolio is key to those without access to paid education and expensive hardware. I have tried C4D, Maya, 3DS Max and Blender. I am learning Houdini and using Blender. Sometimes the "industry" is just a "monopoly". Fundamentals and opend minds should be the focus.
