Hint for the cloak. Put quarter sized stones all along the bottom. Keeps the cloak from blowing up in windy conditions AND can help turn it into a flexible club if you need to fight off robbers.
Or...
You could put washers or nuts in the hem; the holes in the middles allow you to stitch them into place.
@@willmfrank or...
You could just use heavy rivets because the washers would snap off due to the weight and force being used against the thread
@@kittysoftpaws3677 leather thread ? gutted paracord?
You realize the flow nature of a cloak in weather is one of the few things that makes it cool ? Cause doing that makes it less cool
@@dragonthibodeau419 it would still flow but the weight makes it not completely blow away
Couple of sewing tips. Trim your seams. Open the seams flat out and press them then fold the seam back and press them again. Gives a much neater finish. On thicker areas where there are maybe four layers of fabric, trim each layer of fabric at a graduated angle so it lies flatter. On curved areas, clip into the seam but stop about 1/8th of an inch from the stitching. That way the curve will be smooth and not look like a series of jagged lines. It also lets the fabric "give" which is more comfortable when wearing. I've made several cloaks in the past, all lined, all with hoods.
I know this comment is 2yrs old, but the tips are very helpful. Thank you very much!
@@catsmeow5566You're welcome. These tips can be applied to any item you are making. Can turn a garment from looking home-made to looking professional. I made my wedding outfit myself - a fully lined ankle length dress and fully lined jacket (I was in my late 40s when I remarried). I ironed every seam flat by gently stretching the seam as I passed the iron over it. The result was a professional looking outfit.
I had gone to our local wedding shop but they had nothing in my size (I'm very short and slim), wanted to sell me a dress that would have been suited to a younger lady walking down the aisle (we got married in the Registry Office) and I would have looked like a fairy on a Christmas tree 🙄
The cost of that ran into hundreds of UK pounds. So, I went to our fabric shop, found the exact fabric I wanted, a satin type in an Oyster shade, bought the fabric, lining, pattern and all the notions and had change out of £30 ($38). Made the outfit within a week. Exactly what I wanted and it was a perfect fit. I'm a widow now but if I met someone (in my late 60s so doubtful) I'd have no hesitation in making an outfit again.
@@Pythonaria Wow! Making your own wedding outfit is impressive. Sorry to hear you're a widow but hope that you find love again and that you'll make a great wedding outfit!
@@catsmeow5566I have no intention of getting married again. I prefer curling up with my cats and a good book - less hassle 🤣 I am about to start making a pair of palazzo pants as I like floaty skirts/trousers for summer as when you walk they cool you down. I hope we get a good summer this year as last year, despite what the climate change brigade were saying, we had a lot of rain and temperatures were well below average except for a few days. I wore jeans and sweatshirts most days. I have a convertible car and was only able to take the roof down twice. On the plus side my Conference Pear Tree had a bumper crop which kept me busy in the kitchen making pear jam and other pear recipes.
@@Pythonaria ah. I have no intention of ever getting married. I also love curling up with my cats. Got 12 of them currently. Summer last year in my area was absolutely miserable. Waay too hot and my AC died. I don't do well with heat so I'm hoping it won't get that hot this year. Hoping temps will stay under 100. They got up to 110 last year with heat index over 120. Palazzo pants seem cool. I have a sand pear tree but it hasn't had fruit in almost a decade.

I LOVE how excited he gets with his nerdy builds. Plus I love this cloak.
Just remember, it may be wise to attach your knives directly to you body, lessening the possibility of your weapons getting lost in the moment as your cloak floats behind your shadowy movements.
Going back and watching your older videos it's so nice to see you less over the top and animated and more like a fellow traveler explaining things.
You know what would be really cool? A rebar reinforced wooden wizard's staff with a tazer on the end! Because you wouldn't deprive an old man from his walking stick, would you?
Ohhhhh. I'm doing that.
Excellent video. Fun fact. The throwing knives are felonies in California, so think about that if you are traveling to an event here.
That’s a sick cloak. I’ve been considering making some mantles from leather. Thanks for the video!
Thank YOU for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
Kkk hoods
when you forge weapons you should put runes on them
Good idea!
Greek, Norse or Egypt?
If you do it perfectly they should glow red for an eternity

*Definitely Norse*
Or viking.
Vegvisir looks great.
Also Sventhorn
And Yeah.
Excellent cloak!
But since the bottom part of the cloak was still open at the point where the hood got stitched on, wouldn't it have been faster to just turn it inside-out again to stitch the clock-hood linings together with the sewing machine, instead of doing it entirely by hand?
yes
This is the Dragon prince’s Rayla cloak but with throwable knives. Noice
totally sick. I've been needing a cloak for photo shoots, and this def. beats paying several hundred bucks to buy a cloak. Much more satisfying.
Hope it comes out well for you! I LOVE this thing😁
I stumbled across your channel chasing wooden pipe builds and ya know, I've been on a search for information made simple on cloak making for YEARS. All of them that i came across didn't explain things well or didn't explain it at all, You on the other hand are an excellent instructor. The way you showed how and explained why made everything so simple, I'm a visual learner and you taught me well. Thank you for a great video, you have a new subscriber.
This is such an epic cloak! And the throwing knife pouch inside is totally dope! Making one this summer! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Thanks for the love! I hope you share with us how it comes out!
If you attach the knife holder to the lining prior to sewing the outer cloak to it, then the pocket attachment won’t show from the outside. Just be sure to place the holder on the side you face the lining towards the outer fabric before sewing (between the two layers), so that when you flip it inside out for the hidden seams, the holder will now be on the out side
Now you need an outfit to go along with the cloak, something in silk and linen perhaps.
It's true! I need to make a bunch of outfits to go along with the other stuff I have made 🤣. Now that I know how to use the sewing machine I can do it! Thank you for watching!
@@SkillTree silk baron has some great shades of silk, and mood fabrics carries linen at reasonable prices if you need places for fabrics.
@@elwindil8566 thanks for the tip! I will give them a look and try to find some patterns.😁👍
@@SkillTree for patterns, there's always the historical route, I could snag some of the sites I've found during my own research into making period correct garments.
@Darragh Walsh totally happening! At this rate, I will be the bell of the ball at next year's renaissance festival.
I love the removable holster idea, I'll definitely be putting in grommets for removable snack/trinket/knife pouches!
I can't wait to see your armor complete also you should make wizard robes with pockets for days got to hold any spell components you may need
I was originally going to add pockets to this one too, but the video would have been way too long. I am afraid it is already too long 😅
@@SkillTree I don't mind long videos but I understand what you mean maybe a leather over the shoulder bag
Pocketa for days?
That’s really freaking cool. Only problem is it needs more knives : )
NEVER ENOUGH KNIVES
This is perfect! I need cloaks for my secret sorority story. It’s epic. Book coming soon
Keep nerding out over the cloak. You earned it. It is quite cool.
I STILL nerd over it. I love that thing 😁. Thanks for watching!
This would be awesome with a holder for both a collapsible bow and two batons (along with the knives).
Well that was just cool as hell.
You're awesome dude. You inspired me to turn my wool military blanket into a ruana cloak for multi use in my survival pack.
I actually used your video to make my own hooded cloak, and it is totally epic!
(Although I had to recalculate the measurements from yards to meters first but hey nothing a little bit of math can’t fix ;))
Keep up the great work! I’ll definitely look up more of your videos to level up my crafting skills.
I am glad you found it useful! Wish I could see the finished product! Thanks for watching 😁
Math can't fix bad mental health... Or my algebra grade lol
I love how much fun you have making these things
Finally I found a model of cloak and hood for my customs action figures.
I hope you share how it comes out!
Hints for working with leather. You shouldn't use hot water on leather. You also shouldn't put it in the oven. You're drying out the leather. Just wet it with room temp water. Shape with a bone folder or put in a mold. Also you should have a welt. That will keep the knives from cutting the stitching.
Oven hardening is perfectly fine - it's a well known technique for hardening and you can oil/finish/condition the leather after. Agree that hot water is not necessary
Hot water just makes it a little easier to work the leather. Oven hardening locks the molded shape.
If you want the leather to be basically weather proof, soak the hardened leather in melted wax. Source: ice been making molded sheaths and holsters for 20 years. Plus... research making leather armor.
10:52 given he puts his hand directly in the water we can assume it’s not that hot, probably just meant not cold
The wet molded leather holster turned out very good. Using a foam lined Press, to help shape and mold the leather, gives a better definition and hold, to the leather. Their are many videos on youtube for working with leather and making kydex plastic holsters.
I tried making a ruana cloak with a clasp and a viking hood because they seemed simple, but this is much more custom fit. I might have to try making one. Honestly so glad I found this channel.
This is an amazing build 👏
But i personally think you ought to balance things out 😏 with three more knives on the other side
safety tip: fleece is not safe around fires, like campfires or torches. When it burns it melts, making it a glowing-hot sticky substance that will spread over your body if you stop drop and roll.
That is only the sythetic stuff.
Actual fleeced wool doesn't do that.
Wool is naturally fire retarded.
I finally found a nice hooded cloak tutorial, and this is exactly it. I’m making a Jedi Knight outfit, and this works perfectly for that. All I gotta do is use different fabrics. Thanks for the help!
I can't describe how awesome I think this video is. A cloak is something we wanted to make before Rennfest this year but didn't have time to get together and do it... My friends daughter went as an assassin... When she sees this, I'm going to be forced to make her that 3 knife sheath. At least that's the easy part! You give me so much work and i'm backed up as it is!
My sincerest apologies. Here's the plan. Just get her the materials and challenge HER to make it! Then you get a break and I get more watch time 😉. That's right... I made it about me like a real youtuber.
@@SkillTree HAHAHAHA. You're so selfish. I'll challenge her mother to make the cloak and she can make the sheath. She'd knock that out easy with little direction.
You could even stiffen the leather more by adding a water based glue like elmers to the water… i saw that technique used in a leather mask video on YT a while back
That deflect and basically riposte at 14:17... super nice. Smooth execution. (yeah yeah, of course in a real fight... but in a fantasy fight, knives are a valid option against longer ranged weapons.)
Loved this tutorial!!!!!!! I made my prototype today for my Halloween costume and it turned out fantastic. I'm going to make SO MANY!!! thanks so much 🥰
So glad this worked out for you! I am wearing mine out today too!
Aight this is amazing - I gotta learn how to get started doing stuff like this!
Damn look at that like to dislike ratio good work my man
Thanks! Hope you enjoyed the vid too!
@@SkillTree HELL YEAH I DID!!!
A wool crepe would have more flow to it. Your fabric looks a little stiff. Or I guess just run it through the wash with fabric softener would work too. Still pretty cool👍
My sis taught me how to sew by making a quilt when we were recovering from surgeries at the same time. One thing useful is, as a general rule unless otherwise stated, in quilt making the seam allowance is 1/4 inch. In garment construction the seam allowance is 5/8 inch.
Not me searching youtube for how to make a cloak because it'd both cheaper to make your own, and I get to have my cloak dream.
I want to be a mythical demon in the woods, and i need the right cloak. Thank you for giving me outlines
Thoroughly enjoying your video's. It is obvious you have a great time making them and you do a really good job detailing and explaining your process.
Thank you so much! It really is a lot of fun to share this stuff. Thanks for watching!
I kind of want to do this out of leather. Cheers, mate.
The sewing machines I have used never had any lines, but for some reason I’m an expert at sewing it straight
This is my new favorite channel.
Thank you for this tutorial, you explain the steps very well. I got a lot of inspiration from this video. Also thank you for showing that sewing is not only for women :D
Having some knives hidden in the cloak, that's quite a clever idea that could make a difference in a LARP... I should modify my own cloak like that 😏
That will be a nice surprise. Just when they think they have you, BAM! throwing knife to the chest 😆. Let me know how it turns out!
@@SkillTree I first need to add a lining to my rudimental canvas cloak and, given my tailoring skills, that's going to take some time... 🤣
This is the perfect explanation of how I want to design my hood for the cloak. Thanks so much!
Dude, you deserve way more views and subs. Just found your channel, very radical.
you should make an actual skill tree to track what you've unlocked or something
When you go to sew the bottom of the cloak to close it, you can do most of it on the sewing maching inside out, leave enough space to turn the cloqk right side out, and continue to close the rest of it with the blind stitch, instead of doing it all by hand. Because I have seen you follow the primal rule of sewing (90% of your work should be done at the ironing board), that last step to close up the cloak will leave you with a pristine edge to your seams. Also, if youre not using a serger, iron your seams open so they lay flat. I remember making my first lined cloak with my mom when I was 12, and I still use it (I'm not very tall 😅). You're certainly making the project look a lot easier for the beginning sewer than what I remember (my mom is a darter and pleater 😂😂).
I learn more with you in this video than I did In fashion school!!!😮😮😮😮
Awesome cloak, think I might have to actually make this one. Thinking the outter layer could have the silicone/mineral oil treatment to make it waterproof as well and that would be the only thing I would modify.
I want to make a cloak like this for everyday life (at least on the cold days), but instead of knive holsters, maybe pockets for my wallet, pens, marbles, etc.
Thanks!
That's AWESOME good idea for my throwing knives 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you liked it. I have a lot of fun making them appear with a flourish and then vanish again 🤣
What if you added eye holes to the top/back of the hood that lined up with your eyes when you pull it all the way down? Then it'd be a mask too.
You can put fabric over the holes that's thin enough to see through
This is so perfect thanks, im finishing up a costume and the only thing I really had no instruction for was the hood - the fabric is kinda expensive so I was scared to mess it up lol. But this worked out perfect. Ima be a dope plague doctor at the renfaire thanks!
You should make a crossbow
Awesome skill bro. That gives me some great ideas to modify that to not only a Jedi robe, but maybe one out of thin leather to be like a Critters-esq Bounty Hunter. Keep up the good work. Now if you can find the details to make the extending barrel cannon the bounty hunters used...now that's a video I would love to see.
Glad you liked! I am unfamiliar with the critters bounty hunter. I will give it a look and see about planning! 😁 Thanks for watching.
So glad i discovered this channel! Now i can achieve my true nerd potential!!!! Subbed
Kilroy was here (here’s an idea how about you put those knives in a resin mold and then use the mold in order to make rubber knives?)
amazing job, now you might want to hem the bottom of the cloak for a longer fabric life ;)
resin cast replicas of the knives might be a good idea for cons... or foam ones
Can't like this ENOUGH!!!!
Thank you for this! I'm trying to do an OC Jedi costume but I'm going with the surcoat style with attached hood and wanted to see how to do the hood. I think I might want a detachable cape that folds behind the shoulders rather than hanging in front, but I'll have to play around with some discount curtains I got and see how that looks. The ladder stitch is very useful-- especially since I haven't used a sewing machine since 1991 and I do all my sewing by hand. If you are worried about the pins moving, you can also do a basting stitch beforehand to hold things together. Your toggle clasp is very cool. I think I want to go with lighter/thinner fabric to get the hood to drape a bit more.
Would an air fryer work instead of an oven? I have a toaster oven-looking air fryer and do not have a working regular oven.
I think I'd want to carry my medieval style flatware set- 2 pronged fork, a spoon, a knife, & a food pick all with twisted metal handles inside a leather roll.
Love the video you should make a leather belt pouch
Good idea! I would love to make one. I may just bump that high on the list.

Is it necessary to use an inside material? Or can I use only one material for the whole cloak? I really want to make a rough looking dark green cloak and would love your advise! This is no joke the best tutorial I’ve seen on making cloaks. Can’t believe how underrated you are!
Hi, Felix! Sorry for the delay! You can do whatever you like😁. I just added the inner lining so the lacing that holds my knives in place wouldn't show through the outter layer. Good luck!
