We Dynoed A 7.3L Ford Godzilla With NO Throttle Body Or Intake!

- We wanted to try something crazy while doing some R&D on the new Ford Godzilla engine and due to the design of the engine and the ability to run the engine without an intake we decided to give it a shot!

Amazing to see the valve action and how the air flow starts and stops as well as the fuel droplets react. Great video Ben
So what was the power differences for the different set ups? Very interesting test
Great and interesting experiment! Thanks for sharing
Wow awesome clip. Thank you for working on the Ford 7.3.
First time to your channel. Very cool insight shown here.
I’ve never pictured the pre-injection of fuel and the bounce back of the fuel in the intake tract without the runner. Earlier portions of the video show the fuel shooting out of the intake during the injection cycle, only to be drawn back in under valve opening
Clearly shows the cleaning potential of the back of the valve spraying injector at work (and port cleaning too) versus the inherent DI only coking problems to the intake tract. Also the cooling potential on the intake valve of fuel droplets pulling heat away via vaporization.
Wonderful
Amazing work great job love the thinking way outside the box!! Great R&D thanks for sharing the info..
Very cool - leave it Ben to come up with this idea - it reminds me of a high tech version of what Jon Kaase did putting his finger in the intake port and filming it!
How did it perform compared to with the throttle??
Did it make more or less without the intake??
just like the old control line airplanes... who needs throttles when a spraybar will do?
on a brake dyno, if you can hold the engine right back, and do exactly that... a venturi and spraybar, no throttle...
you find something very interesting happens as the RPM changes... and when you understand that, you start to understand what emulsion tubes really do.
also be interesiting to do a raw power side by side comparison... spraybar and needle valve versus EFI...
lol, be fun, tweaking a needle on a 500HP engine at full roar :)
unbelievable! i would think the risk of external explosion of atomized fuel air during valve close events would be high... Dangerous but well done !
It’s direct injection
@@michaelgunning347 It is not direct injected. the injector is not inside the cylinder. the spray is behind the valve in the port. in the slow mo you can see the fuel bouncing on the valve when it closes.
I've wanted to try that for YEARS! Very cool.
We love our retro engines but modern iron has real advantages.
Wow!! That was Awesome !!..👏 Subscribed!.. and I'm a carb guy even. 😅
Awasome, now i know how to cure my Pistons Athletes Foot Fungus..
Awesome video! Awesome engine. Awesome idea. A lot of awesome here! Imagine if you found that the tough acting Tinactin made mad power 🤣🤣🤣
Very Good Video! outstanding results, where will you go next? You can see the air charge swirling around. Question: how much of an effect did the open intake manifold have on that? temp? density?
Great set up.i wish i had an engine room like that☕🔧
Wish I had an engine like that!
Really cool, was hoping to see comparison Power numbers.
I couldn’t hit the sub button fast enough
I wanna see one of these with ITBs and a equal length 8 to 1 header set up.
Are you planning on any wet flow bench time with these cylinder heads from the Godzilla?
Very cool. Are you going to release more of that slow mo content?
Did lack of plenum made difference in power curve?
That was nuts!!!! Loved it Thanks
whats interesting is the amount of fuel stand off in the wide angle running shot.
Yeah and more so even that it can’t be seen when the runners are present, even with the top off!
It reminds me of the Renault F1 Dyno with injectors above the individual runner's.
MR CB ................makes you realize the importance of overlap ???
A billit intake manifold is crazy overkill 😂 yall just throwing away money atp
And the injector cycling. Pretty cool. No valve bounce either. I wonder if you put different length intake runners on the port, could you find a length that eliminated reversion or maybe a length where the column of air was increasing/maximizing the VE? Boggles the mind what you might see or discover.
Some production engine do have variable length intake runners that optimize engine tuning as rpm changes.
So cool guys!
Unreal!!!
That is bad ass!
WOW
Holy shit. I’m less than 2 minutes in, and paused to comment. I am totally hooked and can’t wait for what’s coming. Un-pause…
I’m back, and seeing valves move and the fuel vapour move back and forth was really interesting, but it left me wondering; how much power and torque did it make with no manifold at all vs just the runner half of the manifold?
Why is such a big engine only making 430hp?
The reversion of the fuel without the intake on was pretty wild
Awsome content thanks for sharing
That's wild!
Nice!, btw any updates on the spinal tap 2.0?
Oh yeah…it’s coming soon
I have a crazy idea you could test... Take a belt driven air compressor they sell them at harbor freight I don't think I can link it, 5hp, 155psi... Could that be augmented into a boosted application? I mean you could basically be filling a tank of compressed air up at times and unleashing it into the boost or compressor in ways. I don't think I've seen it done but I can't see why the science isnt logical.
If you can make this thing run without spark plugs then I'd be impressed.
now just think if you made sure that the intake ports are matched to the exhaust ports perfectly and also to the LSa of the cam specs and more importantly the head volumetric specs ,then you will have more power with less fuel and the best running engine fuel wise, a stock 7.3lt godzilla engine is not made for the everyday family car, its a truck engine for the commercial baseness out there and they do not care about fuel as its a right off tax wise, but for drag applications think about it ,build a engine to have the same power will cost 4 times as much as this engine as a crate engine swap out and with little bolt on mods you can get over 1,000 hp with ease, the issue is reliability for the drags, thats the main issue, with out opening up the bottom end and even the top end?
You could have controlled rpm and power output by fuel and spark timing control
I don't know if you could, certainly not with their setup. Maybe using a 2 step at start up? NOBODY has ever gotten rid of a throttle plate of some sort.
Except on a diesel!!
@@rdaw33 fuel delivery is exactly how you regulate power/revs in a diesel
But Diesel engines are direct injection.
People run no intake on bmw engines that have valvetronic
Power numbers?
So what was the power numbers?
From what I can see on the graph is something about 700 horsepower and 650 ft lb of torque.
So if a 7.3 is godzilla my 8.1 Chevy must be Father of Godzilla, but 700 hp, 630 tq is nothing to sneeze it.
700hp no intake hubba hubba
Wanted to see such a thing for years, what about a direct injection LT ? no fuel spray
