    The one thing I know in life is that as good as things can be, nothing ever stays the same. Your analogy about too many tournament trails (and thus tournaments) coupled with changing technology and the enormous impact of social media is spot on. Ray Scott had a wonderful dream. A lot of very talented anglers helped build the brand. Forrest Wood built a fabulous company. And it’s all changed, and in my opinion, not for the better.

    • @mistertwister1816
      @mistertwister1816 9 месяцев назад +2

      I think the change is way better for the sport of fishing (not to be confused with the sport of competitive fishing). So much more information is available from a variety of sources, sources with better and more accurate information less compromised by branding (though Randy does his share of branding).

      @@mistertwister1816 I’m all for the RUclipsrs and subscribe to quite a few. For that, you’re right, and we’re all better for it. But just as professional boxing got distorted a long time ago when there were too many circuits, I think the same thing has happened, albeit to a somewhat lesser extent, to professional fishing. And I’m not watching a tournament on TV while some pro states at LiveScope. But yo each his own.

      This is a prime example of how everything is controlled! Who gets to be a pro angler and thus who gets to be the star ! Bass fishing was one of the very few things the the Mega corporations didn't control for many years. Back in Randy's Haydays an angler made it or didn't make it based on his talents ! And God given gifts to catch fish. They have total control over who is in the spot light now, they are groomed all the way from high school to college. They give them the latest and greatest technology to the ones that have signed on with them, they are promoted with media, and plastered all over tv ! They have destroyed a sport that was based on talent and hard work just so they can control who is in front of the camera pushing their narrative. I think KVD was pushed out, I Don't think he was ready to retire ! Look who stepped into his position, Jacob Wheeler is now the face of MLF and Bass Fishing he's everywhere. KVD was a true competitor, that had morals and standards ! That wasn't the face they wanted at the top for some crazy reason.

    i just turned 50. The last time I fished a real tournament was back around. 2001. My Sgt. couldn't let me have the weekend off to go fish Lake Folsom in Northern California. We were very short staff. It was the state finals for B.A.S.S. Federation. They took 20 anglers from each region. i believe there were 5 regions at the time. I started pouring worms in 1994. I was having more fun pouring and injecting worms rather than the actual tournament. I fished the local Fresno Bass Club, B.A.S.S. Federation, and the now defunct Redman series., I lateraled in 2002 to Southern California. At that point, my worms were taking off and didn't mind missing the chaos. I still had an old Lowrance Paper graph and was taught how to read and store the graph. I learned how to read the contour lines on a map. You really needed to know how to read the contour lines on the map and also know where the water elevation was at on that particular day. I now just have a pair of Hook 7's . You take away all of this new advanced knowledge from the average Joe, they wouldn't know how to read a contour map. Nowadays, I'm just pouring plastics and attempting to put smiles on people's faces once they get their stuff. Since quitting tournaments, my stress level has gone down, I don't draw partners that will destroy my boat. I catch more and bigger fish since i said goodbye to the tournaments, and I'm saving money!

    I'm willing to bet that KVD's retirement caused at least one major sponsor to either back out or drastically cut back on spending. The way that MLF came into existence and the way in which it's set up is completely unsustainable. BASS is about big bass, big stage, big dreams, and has an endless supply of skilled anglers aspiring to make it to the highest level of the sport. MLF is a temporary all-star league.

    • @Venandii77
      @Venandii77 9 месяцев назад +6

      Kvd is still has vested interest. His retirement had nothing to do with the organization. He made that clear already.
      As for “endless supply of anglers “ for BASS… that all changed when they switched to 9 open requirements for the elites. And btw, it was discussed just today with Todd Castledine and Andrew upshaw that the opens are having yet another “ change” to their format.
      So much for the “ big stage, big dreams” mantra.
      But i guess anything BaSS related regarding change will be swept under the rug. Anything MLF is demonized huh?

    • @GregDelR33
      @GregDelR33 9 месяцев назад

      @@Venandii77 definitely true about the 9 open format. I don't agree with that either. They did it to simulate the elite series schedule, but it makes it virtually impossible for your everyday person with a job to qualify through that route. You pretty much have to be independently wealthy and/or self-employed now. This will make the elite series even more competitive, too, as I'm sure many of the guys from the MLF who used to be in the elite series and were cut from MLF will reattempt to qualify for the elites. The whole industry just needs more funding, higher payouts, and to give more opportunity to all to truly live up to the "Big Bass, Big Stage, Big Dreams" motto.

      Big Companies partnered with Big Banks is what's destroying our country ! They only let people in that are loyal to them and not the company. They funnel money through capital projects into there contractor buddies pockets for kickbacks ! This money is shared with the group as a collective, And enriching themselves ! They are in control of raises and who advances, thus the power to bully, and push people out who are way more qualified to have there jobs. This power leaches out into the community with job placements in other companies and job movement between different companies. Think about how many people you know who job hop between the same companies over and over climbing the ladder with every move ! This is the same thing that's happening in our government, and intelligence agencies that's how you end up in this mess !

      It’s not like Milliken has posted a video every week for a decade, helped build one of the most successful and upcoming fishing brands to date, pay his dues to the opens and grind it out to make the elites and the classic… Guys in MLF chased a pipe dream when it was created and now it’s biting them on the ass. There’s a saying that everyone knows… if it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t true. And that’s what the MLF is turning into. If it’s not older guys like Randy complaining about an ever changing industry/world its someone else complaining about another angler/person who’s put themselves in a position to be successful.

      @@donyarborough4114he can catch fish, because of ffs. I fished with a very talented angler, who admitted to me he could not skip docks. So all we did was use ffs. How can you be a good angler, but don’t even know how to skip a jig in a dock. Once you actually get to see ffs in use on the water, in a tournament situation. You will understand how much of a crutch it is to a lot of these up and coming pros. And you can also see how powerful it is. It’s inane how efficient and effective you can be at covering vast amounts of water, in short amounts of time. The Alabama rig has nothing on ffs. It’s not even a comparison, ffs is essentially cheating. If you are good with it, you don’t need to know how to be good at anything else.

    Sorry Randy but i think your off on your conclusions. Im glad for the change. Especially the every fish formats return. The 5 fish format has been old, tired and boring.
    I also think the reduction of anglers down to 50 is the most strategic business model we’ve seen in professional fishing. Not from the anglers aspect but overall business side of things. It’s blatantly obvious that MLF management is considering outside US financial markets and the questionable economy. With interest rates, 120% GDP debt… MLF is preparing for the destabilization of the markets.
    This reduction of anglers does limit qualifying of anglers. In the last 48 hours Ive seen more MLF fans excited for upcoming season. So I don’t know where you’re getting your information that fans are upset or can’t keep up with the changes. The last change was for the 2023 season. There hasn’t been any major changes since 2014. There hasn’t been changes mid season as you claim. Ive watched MLf since its inception .
    As for the anglers that left… look at their records for both MLF and the elites. Not impressive nor consistent. Most of whom haven’t been a blip on the radar.
    I usually agree with your content but on this one, your bias is showing.

    Randy, I'm a big fan of your channel and mostly my opinions align with yours. I am 49 years old and I just started fishing 7 years ago. For a newbie like myself, the MLF (BPT) format was much more exciting and interesting than the Bassmaster Elites. The personalities, the coverage, the style of fishing, all got me fired up to look forward to spring when I could get back out on the lake myself. And now with the team format they've introduced, the BPT has revolutionized fishing altogether. I didn't know Bill Dance from Rick Clunn growing up, but I do know good TV. And although guys like Bobby Layne & Hackney have left MLF, I still find the format, and the personalities way more intriguing then the Elites. I only wish one could be the NFC and the other the AFC, and in the end, the top 5 play against each other for the Super Bowl. Thanks Randy, and keep up the good fight.

    I fish the kayak series national circuits (Bassmaster, Hobie). We've had a few Elite pros (Ike and others) fish our events. They usually do well but certainly don't dominate on a regular basis. Some really outstanding fisherman (sorry not me) have joined our ranks and the sport is growing like crazy. But we've got our issues too. FFS is becoming standard on many yaks and motors have been allowed now for several years. At what point does a souped up yak become a miniature bass boat? Good thing though - we take pic and immediately release fish. Five best fish on length rule the day.

    Randy is spot on with his assessment. With tournament bass fishing being such a niche sport, it only makes sense for there to be 1 major top level circuit. There is only so much money to go around. The multiple trails and anglers have exceeded what the industry is able to support. It will be interesting to see where they go from here. BPT went from strongly united and no entry fees , to now being severely divided and higher entry fees. MLF must have lost a huge title sponsor for such a drastic cut. Even if I was in the top 50, I wouldn’t want to work for a company that would lay off my peers with such a drastic plan. Especially considering what those guys gave up to make the BPT. But now that ship has sailed and going back comes with a huge price tag. Talk about a story if the “grass not being greener”.

    I saw this back around 2008 when the economy tanked and all the advertisers/sponsors pulled out of what was then the FLW and of course Bassmaster took a hit as well. It’s obvious folks have stopped dumping the money into this sport that they were. Drive by a boat dealership and it’s more than obvious. The money flow has all but shut off. One mega dealer out of Oklahoma is trying to sell boats at invoice and still probably won’t be able to move them, from what I’m seeing I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the boating industry completely collapsed due to the Covid price run up. I figure the only thing that will stop that is if they gapped the profit margins enough to allow them to go back to pre-Covid prices and still turn a profit. Social media; I agree, is also drawing attention away from the major tournament organizations. Randy I also TOTALLY agree both organizations need a different business model where a good portion of their presence is social media.

    Spot on. Welcome to the world of business. The total number of fishing dollars is being split into smaller pieces and new services like social media is attracting some of those dollars and attracting new dollars that weren’t attainable via tournament exposure. Back in the day you watched a little BASS, Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Hank Parker, Orlando Wilson, and Linder show you how to fish and push brands. Today, there are thousands of bait companies and fisherman exposing fishing on their channels…There are more people making or supplementing a living on fishing through their channels. Tournaments attract the competitor market, channels attract the entertainment dollars, and social media (like this channel) provides much of the drama…It could be an uphill battle for the circuits to recover the dollars…Like I said…welcome to the world of business.

    I agree with you on this one Randy, where some of your videos I don’t.
    There were some things that from the get go that put a sour taste in most people’s mouths.
    When they badmouthed Bass on stage and said how they were going to put Bass out of business. Another thing was cutting out the fans at any of their events. It has been quite obvious that this was coming. The opens can’t accommodate all those people who are going to be cut out.
    I’m sorry for the really good anglers that were sold a bill of goods on this.
    It still pays to recognize snake oil salesmen when you see them.
    Watch Luke Dunkin’s video on this. He is spot on!!

    Most intelligent pro anglers have realized they need to market themselves, primarily RUclipsrs. Mlf and bass could care less about its anglers. The fact that they pay 100k for a win is an absolute joke. 20 years ago anglers were winning 100k

    When you brought up media influencers and brands,it made me think of a podcast I watched,there were three,one in his early 40's,30's and 20's,after bringing up payouts,new rules,the youngest said older pro's are retiring because they evidently can't figure out livescope,ffs or anything technical,I used it on my nephew's boat the first day,so six months you should be an expert,then he said something about brands,he said if he retired tomorrow he would do ok just off his brand,without fishing you have no brand,it's all about the fishing,he's not a rockstar,I truly think the sport is in trouble,

    I never followed the BPT. It is not spectator friendly. I was a marshal in a couple of Bassmaster elite tournaments and I asked every angler I rode with about the BPT and everyone of them said that all the assholes left to go to the BPT and they were glad they left. My opinion on it is that it is a good ol boy tournament series. They couldn’t get their way with BASS so they started their own. Now they have anglers they don’t want in it so they are changing the rules to get rid of them.

  • @dannyhardy878
    @dannyhardy878 9 месяцев назад

    Two points:
    First I agree with your point about MLF keeps changing- they need to stick to their guns.
    Second: There’s a reason 80 angler’s left BASS. There shows were little about the tournament and more about in studio commentary from people that never fished a top level tournament. I challenge everyone to go back to the BASS tournament that MDJ won- there were guys that come in the top 5 that never had any television time. Their sponsors were not happy with the way things were going.
    Lastly- the industry is going to understand the social media influencers are short term gain. I’m 55- fish the Opens and Toyota’s - not trying to move up- just win. But do you know how much money I’ve spent on baits and equipment though out my life? I’m still buying a certain lure you used on my home waters- the Mobile Delta. Since your win and endorsement of that bait- I’m not mentioning it by name- I’ve spent $1000’s of dollars on that bait- because YOU used it and endorsed it. Oh and it works- well. I remember Gerald giving me a War Eagle spinner bait- before he got his first win on FLW tour with it. Do you know how much money I’ve spent on them- heck I had 2 tied on this weekend in a district championship on Neely Henry.
    I also still only buy Wrangler- because they sponsored the National Championship.
    They need to remember- “influencers”come and go- that’s quick money but a legend’s endorsement is sustained long term money in the bank. Keep plowing

      @@Stonehorn There's a hell of a lot that gets an organization to the point that they decide to cut almost half their field. Decisions by higher ups and constant change can't be overlooked. Add to that the original sales pitch etc. that some of the current anglers are talking about and it's far from simple IMO.

    “Professional” bass fishing was a ridiculous notion to begin with. Recreational activities typically are not professions either. I hope that social media does take down the majority of the tourney orgs.
    If anything, they need to consolidate into one org, the PFA Tour, that emulates the PGA Tour format.
    Have a limited number of participants that have to qualify yearly to stay on tour. That way, only the best of the best get to compete. And BTW, FFS are not allowed on the PFA Tour. That kind of stuff is only used in the amateur ranks, not at the elite level.
