  • Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town has gotten a lot of updates since it's launch and in this animated review, I talk about the problems it's had, what Marvelous has done to fix it, and it's overall impact on the game as of the 1.0.7 update. I honestly could have waited for the 1.0.8 update, but the animations were already taking too long as it is, sorry... On the bright side I got to talk about my opinions of the DLC and patches that came out. Overall I think SoS: Poot is an "okay" game, and if it ever goes on sale (not like Nintendo games ever go on sale) it would be a reasonable buy. At 60$ though? Not a chance...

The developers wanted a delay for this game after there had been issues with the previous team and a new one was allocated but the corporate didn’t care and wanted the game to be released as soon as possible because it had been too long for SoS to come on Switch. Apparently they wanted the game to be an open world game, no wonder all the assets are completely developed in 3D. They even planned to have more areas near your farm for the base game but they simply didn’t have enough time. Story of Seasons peaked with Trio of Towns because there was always so much to do. However ever since the transition to Switch, it’s all been downhill. But I am certain that this series will eventually get better, Marvelous just needs to give proper attention to this series.

You do realize the reason it peek at trio of towns , was because it was handled by a different Director. Since they changed Directors the quality dropped.

Not sure about the validity of this, but it honestly makes a lot of sense. Even the name "Pioneers of Olive Town" made be believe this was more open world before I saw the gameplay trailer. An area expansion with more stuff to do is a DLC I would LOVE to see in the future, but honestly I feel at this point Marvelous would rather work on a new project than do that since they already had their DLC planned since launch.

Between RF4, RF5, FoMT and PoOT it feels like the Marvelous stretched themselves a bit thin while trying to remain competitive, maybe even underestimating the work load that comes with HD development.
They certainly wouldn't be alone, its easy to forget that they like other Nintendo/handheld centric devs have been working with GameCube level tech for a solid decade or two and suffered growing pains as a result. Its actually mind boggling to think about.

One element that does add less enjoyment is what was done to the festivals. Which is there are less of them. Like less animal festivals, harvest festivals, there is no cooking festival. Previous festivals I enjoyed are no longer there. Also, The dlc characters can't participate in them which makes the dlc less enjoyable.
Also, the egg festival, I am glad they are changing that one but honestly there isn't enough incentive to really take care of your products and feel accomplishment as much as previous entries.
Alsom the dlc areas I regret buying the dlc since it has not been worth the money. The marriage portions aren't as interesting as it is and the dlc areas are bland.
I barely have played the game much for months due to how bored I am and frustrated with the game play. This feels like my leas favorite Story of Seasons game which is disappointing since I was looking forward to it.

I've spent 50+ hours on this godforsaken SoS because I've spent $50+ ish for this game along with the DLC and I ain't letting that money go to waste XD
However I didn't notice how truly bad the game was before the QOL and its a total yikes. I agree with mostly everything you said. Now the crappiest thing to me was--the NPCS, especially the dialogues.
They're so empty that I skipped every single dialogue in the game most of the times. And I don't usually do that with older SoS games because the characters always got me interested. This game is so.... Soulless. Even the returning bachelor/ettes from the previous games don't make much sense to me like wow they move to somewhere, just recently, to fully furnished houses. I don't see the point at all, because they could've just used the tourist function and let the characters come to the inn if they want to.
I liked the new mechanics that they try to imitate from SDV but at the same time, this game is more of a heavy grinding simulator. There's no actual good festivals to look forward to, goals for fixing the town is too easy (heck what kind of magical protagonist appeared to fix the 'whole town' in a year), it's so bland, even after spending so many hours trying to probe every single thing in it.
That being said I always love the video and your humor, keep up the good work :D

    • @vtea
      @vtea  2 года назад +1

My only fear is that Marvelous will look at PooT and decide to never use any of the mechanics they borrowed from Stardew. They'll conclude that "Ohh well, I guess the playerbase doesn't like these new mechanics", when in reality they just needed to flesh them out better. Not a bad game by any means, definitely playable, but theres so many ways it could've EASILY been better and maybe the next entry will take it to that next step (hopefully)

14:26 Honestly, at this point this business model reminds me so very much of what EA has done to The Sims 4. Releasing a broken and mostly empty base game, only to shove down a gazillion paid DLCs down our throats (while still *not* fixing major game bugs after almost 7 years since release). I loathe the path that modern game development is taking. At least Marvelous strives to do better, but what good are these DLCs really? Two new, equally as empty locations with nothing to do? What a joke... And why strip away so many iconic features of past releases, like the expressive character sprites/pictures? No kissing scene at the wedding sure was a punch in the face; not that it would have mattered if other daily interactions with whom you're dating/married to would have felt more alive and... "romantic", I guess. This was also a huge turn-off for me. I live for the social and community aspects of these farming sims, but the characters in PoOT felt *very* uninspired to say the least. They have no personality apart from the stereotype they try to fit in to 😩

    I bought this with the update... and I returned it. It just felt like I was grinding more than playing. Like stardew valley and havest moon have grinding towards the end, but PoOT was just grinding from the begining. My main problems were;
    - the makers as mentioned, they took up so much space but had so many gaps, it just didn't look nice. And the processing time was frustrating and slow, and even with the storage increased to 10 its still clunky as hell. and the fact you can only put them on farmable land seems like such a waste. there were several good places to put them, and i wasnt allowed to. not being able to put chests in the house was just NO
    - i feel like the trees grew back way too fast. and they had to in order to meet the crafting materials needed. But I'd clear a path to get to a different area and then i'd have to do it again 2 days later. As someone who likes to have their farm perfectly clear it was torture.
    - added to this, I feel like the stamina requirements didn't match the pace of the rest of the progression. Like its pretty easy to unlock the second section of the farm, but once you do cutting a tree down sudenly takes a quater of your stamina. Even if you upgrade your tools it does't help that much.
    - townsfolk were flat as hell. I stopped paying attention to what they said about 15 minutes in. it was the same everyday and noone really had a personality. and I was really sad they got rid of the portraits, those being one one of my favourite things of the SOS series. The artwork is so cute!!
    - finally, in all good farming sims townsfolk have schedules and there are certain times and days where you can't meet certain people. so you have to kind of balance farming and interacting to become friends with everyone. within the first 15 minutes I worked out you can enter all the houses when theyre eating dinner and just talk to everyone then. like, the shops have closing times but they dont close. in stardew you cant enter stores/houses until a reasonable time. after you become friends that time gets looser. but in PoOT you can just wander around in their house/business whenever you want. so i just ignored them all day then did a circuit at the end of the day. its not fun, its just grinding everyone says the same thing.
To me, this just majorly missed the mark. You chase the next upgrade only to find it wasn't even worth it. Also I completely forgot the community tasks was an thing for 99% of my game play. That board needs to be somewhere more obvious.

    • @vtea

As a longtime Stardew player, I was looking forward to trying Olive Town when they put out a week-long full game trial. Over the course of two days, I found that it literally did everything worse than Stardew. Farm clutter respawned way too fast, it doesn't tell you how much energy food restores, there's limited space in the shipping bin, the mines always looked the same, the festivals sucked (the egg hunt is literally a cutscene where you win automatically?!), and the non-stacking mine items was such a stupid decision, along with having a fade-out every time you got one identified. In the end, I didn't even make it to the end of the trial before I checked out.
Just get Stardew. It's only $15 and the developer has added great endgame content at no charge.

I have owned and played every single HM/SoS game...well ever. And I gotta say the games oddly peaked during the Wii Era with Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade.
While I am enjoying POT (heh) it's just so...oddly micro managed. Which makes no sense because it's a farming game but in the older titles more time was put into characters, they felt engaging. Some were mean and had to warm up to you, others had real issues they were struggling with that made the town feel real. Now the most you get is a too cool for school guy who likes coffee much he's pretty nice over all. Were you used to have characters like Gil would told you you were poor and didn't want to give you the time of day.
Yes you had to manage your farm but really I feel like the town and character aspect of the game is so lacking which makes everything else feel so meh. I don't care about these people...why do I care of tourists come?

I incredibly like the idea of a farm/city sim where you go to a destitute town and have to help rebuild and upgrade the town while managing your farm. cleaning the ocean helping renovate the shops and services to gain access to more products and upgrades to benefit your farm or unlock new town events. It would give way more agency to building relationships with everyone in town and gives so many more avenues to progress.

I recently played Story of seasons Trio of towns again and i am a little shocked how much better it is. Yeah the pacing is slow and you have to grind and craft stuff too but i don't know i enjoyed it much more. Plus the characters have actual personalties and arn't so boring. In Pioniers of olivetown you can gift everyone weed and they love it. And what i noticed with the farming: when you pick up your crops you pick all of them up at once pro field. In oilvetown you can't do that as far as i know. You have to pick up every single one seperatly. It takes forever.

Honestly... Pioneers of Olive Town may be the last Ranch Story game I play. And that's horrifying to me because it is--or was--my favorite series. I have other issues with the game (I prefer Ranch Story games to Stardew Valley, for example), and I'm going to do my own review _eventually,_ but I agree with a lot of the things you've said. Then again, so does everybody. That's why those patches happened.

Even with the latest patches, the game still feels ehh, it's a lot less tedious now, but as far as gameplay, progression and characters, I find it to still be behind in comparison to previous titles. They did hint at another remake in the future and as far as I know sos:Fomt was pretty decent, so maybe that would be up your alley?

@@vtea We'll see. The worst part is that PoOT, afaik, sold _really_ well, and so I'm worried that Marvelous is going to take that as a sign that they should push harder in that direction. My conclusion is that it needs and deserves a remake, because it was so close to being so great, but needed a bit more polish.

The way they designed the Makers confuses me, for how much space they take up, they don't do a lot. Would of made more sense to have them be their own building, where you can then improve the functionality of each maker, as it stands, they just turn into eyesores when building your farm.

There are a lot of valid criticisms of this game that would have made this a lot better but if i'm being honest i really love it. Especially after the makers, dialogue, and the recent chat camera update it really fixed many of the issues i had with it. You can see their faces when talking now i like that a lot. For me it was worth my money spent both the game and dlc. I would of liked it festivals were all interactive, the dlc villagers were able to interact with the town as tourist since that's a big theme for olive town. They could have schedules were they visit town on certain days and other villagers acknowledge them. They could have also put them all in one town with their own festivals instead of small separate and empty areas. I still felt the dlc was worth it for the outfits and all the new heart scenes.
I recently got into stardew valley and i love the depth but the lack of it doesn't make pioneers of olive town a bad town. Its a lot of fun and i'm still getting hours out of this game. Yeah i agree it should have been fixed before launch but better late than ever. I appreciate that they're trying. They're both different and good in their own ways. Its fun and yes a bit more simple than stardew but sometimes that what i want from my experience. I'm just glad i get to play both and i have options when i want different experiences. The genre is really picking up and there are so many games that are coming out that its gonna be really fun to see how differently each one comes out. All in all a great review :)
side note: i am curious as to how the virus effected this game and if it had a hand in some of the lackluster parts of this game. in a different reality where that never happened... what is this game like? :O [X files theme plays]

I got the game on release day as a birthday present but barely touched it. However now that all the quality of life updates have gone through I picked it up again and I am REALLY enjoying it. Well, okay, I don't like the sheer amount of silver ingots I need for everything, but at least I can take the game at my own pace. The change to the makers is super helpful in particular.
I want to give Marvelous the benefit of the doubt because PoOT and RF5 were meant to be released on anniversary years so there was probably huge pressure to get the games out without having time for performance review since COVID already caused delays. However I am going to carefully rethink my future purchases from this company now, which is a huge shame.

first vid of yours found when searching reviews of this game, instantly loved your art & energy & jokes
see, it's weird that the makers of this game changed it from the previous installment Trio of Towns in how the makers did item categories. like you'd have a mill, a sewing station, and so on. not a maker for each item :( it's so freaking tedious.
that's half of my problem with this game. the other half is how their stories of and interactions with the characters just feels so lifeless. I truly don't understand why, because the previous games were fantastic, Trio of Towns is awesome (and i cry bc i want a switch port), yet Olive Town just feels so lifeless. why?
smaller issues that I big agree: you can't *actually* decorate your home. it's bizarre you're limited to a small square for the most part that barely holds anything. another thing that drives me crazy is no auto-sort for adding items to chests. please for the love of god just let me put all my items in the existing stacks and be done with it.

That said, I didnt mind it as much when Stardew lacks dialogues because mods exist (if I don't get one new dialogue each day, I won't see the point in visiting the town frequently for a CHANCE I'd get new dialogue that day). I was actually pissed for a bit at FoMT for this, denouncing it as a lazy cash grab (bought it anyway because I didn't properly pay for the pirated PS1 BTN back then...). If PoOT still doesnt understand that characters and dialogue is one of SoS's flagship features, I think I'm gonna pass on this one.

I preordered and paid for the expansion pass. Processing is annoying, and you use up way too much room on your farm with all the big clunky machines. It annoys the hell out of me having to run to the museum to appraise the same exact item all the time, I feel like if the items appraised once… why do I have to get it appraised every time I get it again? It makes me end up having chests of bags of “heavy objects” because I don’t feel like running to the museum every day. Even though they fixed a few things I still just can’t get down with it, I feel like I’m going to fall asleep each time I try to play it.

Here's just a small list of things previous SoS and Harvest Moon games that still worked under the Marvelous name did better than the ridiculous makers in Poot.
-To turn logs into wood planks you just had to chop the logs with your axe too
-In Animal Parade things like crafting materials (wood) and fodder were automatically sent to designated storage that wasn't actually a part of your regular storage (the fodder storage was down graded back in the next installment of handheld games and you had to build a silo in ToT)
-There were no flower restrictions on what could be a perfume and what couldn't. There was a default scent, then there were different scents and colors depending on what collection of flowers you used
-Certain cooked foods or drinks were profitable (and while cooking still hold good for restoring stamina and now gives you incentives if you do gourmet's cooking challenge there is no real reason to do it anymore. You'd still get all the things being rewarded, just at later times though other means)
-You could gain the trust and interact with wild animals (even get them as pets in Animal Parade and Tree of Tranquility, have you ever wanted a pet penguin? That was a thing you could have, a pet bear? What kind? Grisly, polar, or panda? Danger noodle? We gotchu. Squirrel? Heck yeah, Wild boar? Name it Kagura and you got yourself a deal. No pet foxes, but if they liked you enough in SoS you could carry them around and feed them. In A New Beginning if wild animals liked you enough they would bring you a gift of a foraged item to show their equal amount of love an adoration)
-You could customize your farm house, and town in A New Beginning (you could even *gasp* change the direction of the items you are placing
-In SoS there were designated plots of land around the town you could customize, and even then you could also still customize your farm land, house interior/exterior and could change the direction of items you placed down both inside the home and outside.
-Expressive character portraits or atmospheric animations to express emotions (thought bubbles, rainbows, scribble, hearts, etc.)
-Getting clothes was easier (again, in Animal Parade (can you tell which game in the series is my favorite?) new outfits could be purchased at a clothing store to get more you had to get enough hearts with the owner so she would ask you for help getting some stuff, special outfits could be found in festival stalls during said festivals.
-Crafting multiple different clothing material and dying them all at once in one maker shed and being given a set in game time it would take for the like items to finish crafting (SoS) (I think SoS handle crafting items better than Poot) (I could be crafting some gold linen, a rainbow of cotton cloth, 3 different yarns or thread all at the same time and have them stored in said maker until I walked back to my farm to pick in up and properly use it. OH, and you would be notified when an item was finished being crafted)
-The 4 seasons did not have the same amount of days and there were more seasonal events to keep things interesting
(pets festivals that showed off pet tricks you taught them
Animal races for: horses, sheep, cows, goats, ostrich's
    Animal centric festivals
    Flower festivals
    Music festivals
    Firework festivals
    Fashion Shows
Beach festival (Magical Melody for the gamecube there was a swimming mini game you could play at this festival and win a prize if I recall right)
Can you guess which game had an actual fucking circus??? It was only the same cut scene, but you had to find the runaway circus animals first so for a time until you tracked them all down a new part of the scene would be added.
    Stargazing festivals
Communal pot luck or thanksgiving-like festivals
Festivals that were specific in being used as a way to go on a date with a bachelor/bachlorette to deepen your relationship with them and earn more points in filling out the heart gauge and either you could pick who to go to the festival with or if you had enough hearts a bachelor/bachelorette would visit you in the morning of some time before or the day of and ask you themself.
    ALSO:
-Smaller Love interest events were they would visit you when at certain heart levels and give you a gift because they were just thinking of you
-REVERSE LOVE CONFESSIONS AND PROPOSALS!!!!!! I don't want to have to do all the freakin work in this relationship if I dont have to. If the DS SoS and the Wii games can work in reverse love confessions and marriage proposals, why couldn't the Switch?
-Other potential love interest and love rivals getting together after developing enough friendship with them and they eventually falling for each other, marrying and having a kid (If the Wii console could do this for Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade, then why can't the Switch? Friends of Mineral Town had love rivals return!) Fun fact: In ToT and AP if you optted to marry the Harvest Goddess or Harvest King (Because heck yeah you can do that if you work hard enough) then all the LI's in town will pair up with their designated LI if they have a high enough friendship with you (Also you can go to their weddings) and this is the only what to get all the other children. Because if you marry a LI from town, your LR will stay forever single.
-Child growth milestones (from new born, toddler, to young child) (Again, in ToT and AP you could have a younger and older sibling and it was noticeable)
-THE CHILDREN COULD ALL GO TO SCHOOL TOGETHER
ALL OF THESE GAMES STILL HAD MARVELOUS INVOLVED WITH THEM SO WHAT HAPPENED????
The first story of Seasons after the split had its problems, but it was still leagues better in regards to item crafting than Poot is. And while I haven't played Trio of Towns nearly as much as SoS or A New Begining, OR Animal Parade it still had perhaps a better request board-like set up with its side jobs that actually not only gave you an extra way to earn money early on, but was intrinsic to helping the 3 towns and it showed through a progress bar and then special requests to actually help fix something that was noticeably broken or the town was in need of. And then you actually SAW the difference it made. (Oh, West Town needs a new bridge that crosses the river? Sure, I'll help gather my share of the materials while the other residence pull together their share of the materials. Hey, would you look at that, the noticeably grey, old looking bridge was replaced with a newer one!)
Meanwhile in Poot, the Mayor asks what kind of renovations we should do to the road and what kind of style it should be, I alone gather the materials we need without any mention of maybe the towns carpenter offering to to the renovation, or even mention of the town folk gathering donations for it (where as in SoS Victoria would gather donations from Townfolk for the fireworks festival, and the more donated, the bigger the event was). And then when thats done you dont....you don't really see or notice anything different about the road. Your asked what kind of town you think Olive Town is but none of your answers impact the look of the town or even its music. Meanwhile, in A New Beginning you are given two areas that make up the town and are allowed to place the buildings anywhere in those area's, you can build and layout the sidewalk, fountains, make a park, put down flower pots.
I'm realizing this is turning into a poorly edited rant essay so imma just leave this here...

I'm starting to think that Starred Valley killed any chance of a Story of Seasons (let alone Rune Factory) ever getting popular.

I love your videos so much.
I enjoy harvest moon style games so much, but since stardew I cannot stand Marvelous games. They feel so slow and time wasting. I love their charachter designs but the gameplay is so frustrating. I am so hoping the indie alternatives are able to fulfill this itch.
I am patiently waiting for your next video. Have a wonderful time meanwhile!

It's a shame that SoS PoOT isn't up to the usual level of enjoyment as other SoS/HM games. I still prefer it over Stardew Valley, *especially* when comparing the fishing mechanics and how Stardew can get to be too much that I drop it out of sheer stress, but I'd rather play SoS Friends of Mineral Town or the 3DS SoS games over PoOTs, or even go back to an older title like HM Save the Homeland or Animal Parade.
My biggest complaint would be PoOT's limited hit box range, as even the 3DS games had better range or I at least don't recall struggling with it nearly as badly, and the lack of customization for the inside of the house, plus cooking taking 30 minutes of game time to make one dish... Not even Trio of of Towns did that, and it let you stack your cooking, instead of one at a time.
That being said... I still do enjoy the game and I want to at least get married/get to the lowest part of the mines so I can do more upgrades, but I'm debating if I should wait for the last updates or just try to make due with what we got now.

One of the things that has kept me out of the genre is either lack of female player options or limited ones like (Married? Lol! No more game for you!) mechanics. So saying its just "insert year here" is underselling the issue a bit.
