I have this same tensioner on my singlespeed cross bike and it couldn't handle an extremely muddy race a few weeks ago. Cog and chain loaded with mud and the chain started skipping after the 1st lap. Switching to a clutch MTB derailleur and using that as a tensioner.
That’s exactly what I was wondering. I figured tensioners were for vertical drop outs since you can’t pull back for tension? Maybe just displaying the product ?
yes it does free spin and hold the chain tight I just installed one on my bike
If you cant find one of these, or dont want to buy, try using your rear derailleur.

This happened to me as well, Chain began to slip,
Use the tensioner with two pulley wheels, I'm using one and it's perfect
The heck is that chain? What planet are you from?
Are you using narrow wide chainring for this single speed set up?
Is it spinning freely when you pedal counter clockwise?
Please tell me advantage of this bicycle part !
