- Woodburning a Monarch Butterfly on a slice of maple, with bonus art on the reverse.
My mom helps these beautiful creatures out by providing food and a safe place to cocoon, then releases them back into the wild. that's what inspired this week's project.
I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
God Bless and Semper Fidelis.
I'm considering doing a series of butterfly woodburning art. Any interest in seeing more? If so, name some butterflies you'd like to see made. Thanks very much!
Blue Morpho
Love the monarch butterfly, should also consider moths maybe they also have pretty patterns on their wings.
Menelaus Blue Morpho Butterfly, my wife's favorite color.
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, female. (Papilio Glaucus)
I don't know much about butterflies, so I'll leave it up to you to create both art and educational opportunities for oafs like me. But yes; more, please!
I'm a swallow tail guy. Our gardens have been blessed with at least 4 different varieties of butterflies this year. Keep enhancing the backyard landscape for more critters.
Wow!! That turned out really nice. It’s neat that your mom raises butterflies
That turned out nicely!! Tell Mom I said thank you for caring for the Monarchs!!!
Very cool piece and the butterfly is beautiful, your mother should love it. You have a very steady hand Rod and thanks for another great video.
Monarch butterflies are my spirit animal. Your mom is AWESOME. I had the opportunity to release one (after whispering my wish to it which came true later on) years ago. I absolutely LOVE the caterpillar on the back!
Whoa that's amazing
It never hurts to go out of our comfort zone every now and again. And there is always something we learn when we do. Beautiful, stay safe.
I only have two words for this, delicate and beautiful! Thank you for all of your hard work!
I just purchased this piece from your store! My wife also raises monarchs and surprised her that I ordered this from you. She is excited to get it!
As of 9/13/20 shes released 180 Monarchs and still has about 100+ more to go.
Hope you do more like this!
Awesome! That is an incredible amount of butterflies, and monarchs sure need the help these days! Thank you! more coming very soon!
Gorgeous!!! The Monarch butterfly is my favorite. Saw so many of them when I was a kid.
The Zebra Swallowtail, Queen Alexandra Birdwing, Blue Morpho, Tiger Swallowtail, and Peacock butterflies are beautiful creatures if you are creating a series of projects with butterflies.
Take care, stay safe, God bless.
I like different. It keeps my mind moving. Beautiful piece, story and tribute to your Mom. Our daughter raises Monarchs and has shared them with her grandmother and many others over the years.

Beautiful job on the Monarch Butterfly Rod! Thanks for always sharing with us!💖👌👍😎JP
That was a joy to watch, no hideous distracting music, just a peaceful peek at someone enjoying what they do.
Kudos to your mum for taking care of the caterpillars through their transformation too.
That line you missed nearly drove me mad though lol. TFS ;@)
The caterpillar at the end was such a nice surprise.
Absolutely beautiful, Rod. It looks like a real butterfly under epoxy. Your patience was our reward. Take care.
Bill
Mr Humphrey, you never cease to amaze me. This is FANTASTIC! As an entomologist, I really appreciate this piece. The colors are dead on. Your Mom is an awesome person for helping these creatures in their survival. I love how you can mix nature, and your talents and gift them to us. Thank you kind Sir. Semper Fi!
Thanks very much, Mike! I always appreciate the kind words of a subject matter expert! Semper Fi!
Rod, that butterfly is precious. Any butterfly collector would cherish it. I know you said name any butterfly, but I have always considered the Lunar moth to be too pretty to be called a moth. When the right light hits it, it’s stunning. That said, my most favorite butterfly is the Eastern Black Swallow Tail. 😉 Hugs to Susan!. 😊
Wow Rod that’s beautiful. I hardly blinked as you were working. When you say it’s nice you deserve to blow your own trumpet. Your mum must be so proud of you.
Thanks very much, Rita!
I's almost flying!
A good homage to the Danaus plexippus, the Monarch Butterfly!
👏👏👏 fro Brazil 🇧🇷
Very cute! The lil caterpillar in the back is adorable. Thanks for sharing.
Very beautiful. I love that you put the caterpillar on one side and the butterfly on the other. How very creative.
Beautiful Piece, thanks for sharing. God Bless. Full View and Like
You, my friend are a man of many talents. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. Cheers, mate.

Nice piece of wood burning, really beautiful. Love the dedication, obviously a special lady. Keep safe and well.👍
Thanks very much, Clive!
Beautiful work, as always, Rod!
Thank you so much, David! 😀
that is lovely, you brought back 2 beautiful memories. One of the 2 years our cottage was in the Monarch migration path and the trees were covered with thousands of Monarch butterflies! A sight never to be forgotten. Another of a grade 1 student painfully colouring in a large set on cardboard butterfly wings for a Halloween costume with my late dad lying on his stomach beside me holding stubs of crayons in his big hands. Blessings, stay safe and well.
Wonderful memories, Tara! Thanks so much for sharing them, I really appreciate it.
My respects to your mom for helping these unique creatures.
I really enjoyed this relaxing video.
Your attention to detail never ceases to amaze me!
Thank you!
Thank you very much, Eleni!
My family and I made sure to plant tons of plants that attract butterflies. I love all types of butterflies, they are so stunning!!!
Obviously made with love

Thanks very much, Doug! I just get lost in the concentration zone... a quite place that I enjoy when I can find it! Hope you're doing well, and it's great to see you back at it!
Love it, beautiful designs. wood burning has so much enjoyment. My winter genre. Nice outdoor entertainment ❤️
Wow, Rod that is beautiful. Really impressed with your intricate detail work. Very beautiful. Update on my mom Sandi, who's been in the hospital since July the 11th with covid-19. She was accepted into rotary rehab yesterday, and began her recovery today. Thank you and all of your viewers who sent well wishes and prayers.

That's wonderful to hear, Jimmy! Good news is so welcome these days! Praise God.
That is really, REALLY, REALLY beautiful and close to my heart as I too once raised monarchs and released them when I lived In Michigan. I love monarchs. ❤️
I love this piece! Its very pretty and the added surprise artwork on the back is so special! Thanks for sharing.
Monarch butterflies all my favorites. You did a really good job capturing its look!!
Hey Rod,
You are quite the versatile artist, well done!

My life gets a little calmer every time I see you have a new post. Thanks for making things better.
I'm glad, and you're very kind, thank you!
Wow. That's cool. I like it. I enjoyed your videos. Thank your service protect our country. I like you crafts.
What great change of pace. Wasn’t sure how I would like it until you began the coloring. It turned out great and gives me some ideas for future projects
Dear Rod, nice piece of art. I would like to see more butterfly projects. My favorite butterfly is the peacock butterfly since I have so many happy childhood memories connected to it. The other favorite is the brimstone butterfly which always appears when I am thinking of my mom who passed away in 2012 at the age of 68. And the dovetail butterfly is flying all the way from the Tuscany in Italy to the Rhein-Main area here in Germany where I live. So it is a very special summer guest to me since he looks like a little humming bird when feeding on any flower for nectar. Please stay safe and take care. Semper Fi.
Very nice! I love that you always include clips of real time footage. I think speeding it up makes it look easier than it really is and creates unreal expectations of the time it takes to make something like this.
, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL !! My wife loves what you did and was very impressed with the colored pencils you used and how you used them. She has always been impressed with your work. Keep up the good job. SEMPER FI 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Wow, those colors really come alive when you blend them with your finger @9:20. Really cool pencil colors!
Nice! From a Dentist, you used the finger rest very well! Helps steady the hand. Well done
That my friend is stunning! Gorgeous! More yes!
Hi Rod, A beautiful video and a beautiful butterfly. The Monarch was one of the first butterflies I learned to recognise. We used to have a lot of them in our garden when I was a young boy. Brought back happy memories. Thank you Rod. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Thanks very much, Huw! They're really fun to see, and always a welcome sight. Cheers!
Now this is a very enjoyable video. Thank you for giving us this eyecandy to watch🤩

Outstanding as always for friend. SemperFi
Beautiful Rod I love it! I liked it before you added colors but when you did it really came to life. Butterfly's and Humming birds are my favorite thing to watch in our backyard.
Semper Fi,
Gary
Thanks very much, Gary! I enjoy watching them too. Our hummingbirds are a bit ornery though, lol
Such a beautiful butterfly!😍😍😍😍😍
Absolutely gorgeous awesome job. Take care stay safe god bless SEMPI FI
Wow Rod that’s beautiful. Your work ceases to amaze and impress me. Once you had that finished it looked like you somehow got a real butterfly attached to the wood, without looking at it real closely I could see someone thinking that.
Would love to see more butterflies.
Yes would love to see more!!!
I raised them too!
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Love the caterpillar also.
The caterpillar was great just a bonus and it made me happy
I love that it made you happy!
Beautiful piece and what a tribute to your mom's work!
I never thought about using colored pencils on wood burning, turned out awesome!
Your mom is surely proud. Exceptional work. A future idea would be a milkweed pod with the cat.
Great job. Looking forward to when winter sends me indoors and getting out the burner. Thx
This is beautiful and I would love to see more. It makes a refreshing change to see something different.
Hmmmmm..............WOW, that is very cool Rod!! I really like that brother!! Thanks for mixing it up!!
Mama and I are always very impressed and uplifted by your passion and dedication to your craft. You always bring it up to another level and that ALWAYS satisfies and leaves a wow and a smile. Blessings and thank you for your amazing videos.
Thank you very much, Adam, and please thank Mama too!
Just gorgeous! Looks like a real Monarch sitting on a log. You are so skilled.
That caterpillar on the back was a professional touch, beautiful! Pity to hide it though. Should have been on front in some way. Nice to see both side by side. Thank you for this treat!
How about printing on thin tracing paper, sticking it to the wood, and wood burning right over it with no tracing steps. That might be faster.
I ababsolutely love this. Thank you for sharing this fun project.
Fantastic! Love it. I have a friend who did some wood burning. She did the door to the Mines Of Moria from Lord of the Rings. It was about 2' x 2'. Just beautiful. It takes a lot of patients to do wood burning. Please do some more projects like this.
As always, you did a fantastic job. Enjoy watching you do all of your projects.
Many thanks, Scott!
I was raised right in the migratory path of the Monarch Butterfly. They use to land on us the minute we stood still. They were on thie way to a place called Pacific Grove Ca. Good job btw same perfection as always.
Beautiful rendering of a beautiful animal.
The monarch butterfly sometimes makes it's way over to Europe but it can't reproduce here, at least not in Sweden.
Hope you do more projects involving this technique, butterflies or other wonders of nature!
Well done Sir!
This is gorgeous! I bought a wood burning tool a while back and haven't really done anything with it. Now I'm feeling inspired 😊
Great art! Thank you for sharing. FYI, I have saved time in the past by transferring the "copy" or "print out" of an image "print" side down on the wood and running a hot iron over the image. The toner sticks to the wood. Depending on the wood surface, you might have a few spots to fill in. Stay safe!
Rod, I love that you do different things. You are truly an artist and an inspiration. I do wood burning on boxes that I make but have never done a butterfly. What a great idea that I will keep in mind for a future box.
Thanks very much, I really appreciate that!
Great looking monarch love the caterpillar....I would like to see you do a lunar moth
That was lovely. It came out beautifully, both sides.
Early morning art the best kind the mind is free early morning . Thanks for the idea of using a color pencils on burning never thought of using that. I'm an old man and I'm still learning so there's hope I guess. Thanks again R Humphries
Early mornings are my favorite! I hope to always learn new things too, Tom! Thank you!
You are truly talented and a joy to watch. Thank you.

Nice change up. Patience for detail really paid off. It looks like it could fly off on its own.
Thanks very much, Tom!
Been thinking of trying some wood burning myself thanks for the video showing the basic steps! Beautiful end result!
