Yeah, the expiration dates on makeup are such a scam. You buy a $50 palette at Sephora and they want you to stop using it after a year or so? Nah, Imma use that shit until it's worn out, thanks. You know when makeup is expired from the smell usually, not the fake exp dates they give you to buy more.

I unsubbed from a TON of beauty gurus I used to watch and once that happened I stopped buying makeup. This past year I've been using up what I own, (finished off an eyeshadow palette, a blush, two contour shades, several primers, foundations, powders, eye brow pencils and mascaras). I only buy things I completely run out of, and will continue this habit. I can't stand the waste and over production of items we definitely DO NOT NEED and am definitely sick of.

Shea moisture is a go to for me. They're B certified and use post consumer recycled plastic. If you don't know anything about B certification, here's an excerpt from the website "Certified B Corporations are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit. I also feel like the use of makeup can be wasteful if consumers follow how beauty gurus or instagram beauty pages do their makeup. Like when they pour primer over their face, put stripes of foundation all over their face, use layers of bake to set their face, draw concealer triangles under their eyes, etc. I only use three dots of concealer under my eyes and I’m very fair so I practically have purple under eyes from being a tired college student and it does the job for me and covers the discoloration up. The way they use their products is so wasteful and makes people think if they’re not doing it this way it’s not the right way. It’s also not beneficial for your skin if you cake on all of these products that clog your pores like these gurus do, especially if the ingredients aren’t the best

    • @littleblackpistol
      @littleblackpistol 5 лет назад +12

The funniest part is when they put giant globs of foundation all over their face and then spend 10 solid minutes 'blending' it ... i.e. basically removing 90% of what they just put on with a beauty blender, which basically is just an expensive sponge that like all sponges, absorbs product. If you watch real make-up artists such as Lisa Eldrige, they use very little foundation, and spot-conceal, and basically they very rarely even contour unless they are doing a highly theatrical look. Heavy contouring like a drag queen is such a twitty Insta thing. If you are a woman, you don't need make-up that is designed to make MEN look more feminized, ffs. You already have a female face.

    • @KattReen
      @KattReen 5 лет назад +5

It depends on what you're working with. It's ridiculous when people with very clear skin slather on a lot of concealer and foundation.
And what the purpose of the makeup is. What looks great for a photoshoot with studio lights might not work as well as an everyday look in natural light.
Also a matter of taste. Some people want a soft and natural look out of their makeup, and others want something more intense. I don't think the "more is more" approach is wasteful if that is what you want out of your makeup.
A lot of these gurus want to stand out with their created looks, so that's why most of them are so extra I suppose. I appreciate something more subtle and wearable, but maybe that just doesn't get the same amount of engagement on social media.

@@littleblackpistol Yes, love Lisa Eldridge for this exact reason! She is a legit makeup artist, unlike so many beauty "gurus" who can only do one-note looks on their own face. Your insights are very accurate. I'm getting my Master's in Marketing Communications and companies use all of these tactics and it's very sad. I've been watching your videos for years and I really like these new ones of your thoughts on ethical business practices, psychology, among others. Your opinions and points are always so sound, supported, and strong. You made a statement in this video about how things like chemicals are broken down, but I think both myself and others are not so educated about the process of recycling, such as how products break down and why it's important to know. Or the stipulations of expiring makeup. If it's actually expired or it's just another marketing scheme (this expires in 6mo so go buy more!). I'd love to hear your thoughts and whatever knowledge you have to inform us about these kinds of issues as well. For example, I didn't even know what "fast fashion" was until you uploaded about it. No pressure, I just think you already make informative videos and you're smart and well-spoken so I think we'd really benefit. I gave up on investing in the beauty community when it became a one look hivemind and since then I haven't felt the need to buy a single new palette, just replenashing foundation and mascara when I've run out and it's oddly liberating.
Once you ignore what people on a screen tell you are the current 'only' ways to look you quickly get over beign self concious about your makeup. Powder blue eyeshadow? Why not. Neon pink liner? Go for it. Barely a drop of foundation with a heavy smokey eye? Rock on. I spent so long looking for a bronzer that suited me before realising I just hate how bronzer looks on me but felt like I needed to wear it or else I would look like a flat ghost.

I prefer the approach of Asian/Korean beauty, where new products from brands actually offer something truly new and innovative. They try to come up with entirely new categories of makeup (cushion foundations, bb creams, etc.) that are geared towards the average makeup user. Compared to asian brands, these "fast" brands don't offer much different with their new products, packaging- or product-wise, just the same basic product that is overhyped by marketing. Also, Asian brands often offer refills for their products that come in recyclable packaging, so you can buy the product once, purchase the refill for less and reuse the original packaging.

When ABH started releasing product at an unsustainable rate, many influences started making anti-haul videos, and have continued to focus on being more aware of how much product they waste. Although I completely agree that we have to start making better decisions and focusing on sustainable beauty, I am really appreciating the influencers who are stepping up and saying 'No, I'm not going to support this wastefulness"

Thank you so much for speaking UP. I couldn’t agree more. As a 52 year old I’m probably not your typical follower but I hope it’s encouraging that some of us are really thrilled to see the younger generation rising up about this issue. When I was a little girl in the seventies we recycled everything and we were learning about solar power, etc. Clearly the ball got dropped. I enjoy learning about fast and slow fashion from Daria Andronescu (founder of the Wonder Wardrobe course), Justine LeConte (sustainable fashion designer), but you are the first to say much about fast makeup. Bravo! I would be so interested in how to become more choiceful in terms of makeup selection going forward. I have appreciated your cruelty free product videos but I really want to find brands that are also more sustainable and ethical (in terms of how they treat humans) in their practices.

I know Kat Von D is now "cancelled" but her beauty brand was the one palette I bought a year. Saving up and looking forward to the holiday collection. I feel that about zero brands now. Also I have never used up one palette so I now no longer feel the need to buy a "warm neutral palette with a pop of color (blue)."

i found you on youtube when i decided to go cruelty free as well, which was around the same time you did, so i feel like i’ve been on this journey with you. now i’m so much more conscious about what i really needed after i purged makeup i didn’t need anymore. and researching for cruelty free brands after cutting out so many that weren’t. i felt bad thinking about all the money i’ve wasted and product going to waste. the irony is back then i would buy these new products but didn’t enjoy the makeup itself, only the hype. now i’m way more into doing my makeup but only buy what i love/will use! and if i want something new i do my research and really debate on my purchases to make sure they’re worth it. great video!!!❤️

I had a bit of an issue with all those people screaming and crying about the websites being down in Shane’s last episode. Oh nooo you couldn’t spend 100s of dollars on makeup? What a nightmare! 🙄They all seem so out of touch with reality! Makeup is a luxury that no one truly “needs” - it’s art and many feel like they need to wear it because of social/societal pressure but it’s not a basic need. It’s a creative outlet but that doesn’t mean people need ten palettes, 20 lipsticks etc!

My makeup comes from the body shop, which is a cruelty free brand in the UK. It isn't plastic free, but they recycle old containers. They don't release tons and tons of new products. Their makeup is good, affordable, cruelty free and versatile. It's practical too. It's a line for the casual wearer more than the fanatic though.
I just can't find an oil free plastic free makeup remover. I can't use any oil at all, including cold cream. Magic cloth etc doesn't work either. Nor does soap, it's too drying and just water doesn't work. I currently use the body shop camomile waterproof eye and lip makeup remover. That's the only thing I've found so far that actually works.

I used to watch beauty youtubers 10 years ago, but it was so different back then. There was for sure the hype for new products and such, but the people were so much more relatable, and a lot of them were still using their own money to buy products. The beauty community nowadays is... I don't know, I can't even begin to bring myself to watch most of them. I really enjoy the artistry in the crazy looks, but I don't wear much makeup myself now so there doesn't seem to be any point in following them.

I super addicted to buying makeup until I realized I had an issue. I knew minimalism felt super limiting to me, so all I did was get a vintage Clinique makeup bag (gotta love the 90s 💄) and I said to myself “from now on I am allowed to buy own all the makeup I want, BUT all of it HAS to fit inside this pouch” I ran out of space immediately, so I had to give up part of my collection. From then on I went on to realize patterns in what I like when it comes to products and looks (I like fruit scented lipsticks, hate powders, never wear concealer, love sparkly eyeshadow, love red lipstick, mainly interested in exploring Australian brands, etc) so now I just stick to what I know I love and don’t really care for releases.
To keep updated, Once a year I do go online and research what people are doing, I love looking at high fashion catwalk looks for inspiration. If I buy a product for fun I go for an affordable option and remove one item from my bag. If I love it on me I might want to invest in a more expensive option which I then wear the rest of the year.
    Just my two cents :)

it's really cool and nice to see your take on this subject. it's so important to talk about, yet it's almost never mentioned. the beauty community is creating this unobtainable desire to constantly "need" the newest releases from every single brand. they talk about products like "i can't live without this" or "you need to get this", only to never use it again on their channel after the hype has died down. it's not about the quality of the makeup anymore, it's only about having the newest releases.
also, i think the whole pr thing has affected the way influencers judge products. i feel like most of the beauty gurus take it for granted and don't understand the value of the products because it's gifted to them for free. i think you appreciate the makeup you have so much more if you actually paid for it. that's why i really appreciate people like samantha ravndahl, who went off pr and is almost a regular consumer now.

When I first discovered the beauty community (and was much younger) I loved watching these giant makeup collection videos and now it makes me sick, all I see is waste and expired products (that will eventually be thrown away). It also makes me sad when I hear youtubers say that tutorials or "shop my stash" videos don't get views anymore, I much prefer to see someone use their "old" makeup and show their techniques (even if I don't own the products) rather than seeing reviews and hauls of new products I'm not interested in buying in the first place. I wish I could unsubscribe from all of them and not be tempted at all but sometimes it's harder because I got attached to the person, not the makeup haha. Thank you for making this video! I agree with your points with my whole heart.
I stopped buying fast fashion maybe a year and a half ago, and now buy everything second hand (excluding socks and underwear). Around the same time I switched to buying only cruelty free make up and skin care. In themselves these choices are limiting me, stopping me from buying or even dreaming about all of the new launches and new trends.
However, I still recognize the need in myself to buy-buy-buy. I have a constant urge to have something 'new' every week. I really want to get rid of this need! I feel like I'm spending ridiculous amounts of time thinking about what I could use my money on.
It's really tiring to be subscribed to these youtube channels I used to love but whose content is now only consisting of trying out new stuff, hauls, favorites etcetera. Or maybe the content was like that all along, and I'm just now realizing that it's not something I believe in anymore.

  • @EtherealAmoeba

It's funny because the time when I owned the most makeup was the time when the majority of videos I watched were makeup tutorials from beauty gurus I looked up to at the time. That time was when I was 14/15, young, naive, and impressionable and that was 6 years ago. Now I own one small eyeshadow palette that I've had for 3 years because I use it probably once a week, and mascara and eyeliner that I replace when I need to. I don't watch any beauty tutorials now because I don't feel the need to change up the makeup style that I'm comfortable with. However I look back on my teen self with bittersweetness because even though I probably spent more on makeup than I should have, I know I had fun expressing myself with all those different colors of eyeshadow at the time.

I stopped buying super weird shades of lipstick or other trend pieces that I will use once or twice. If I buy something really expensive, I make sure it's a powder product, because you could use them until the Formula gets weird, even if they're expired. The amount of money I save this way is amazing 😅

I’m glad you touched on the “extra glam” makeup propelling the industry and content.
As a makeup wearer who has to be office appropriate 5 days a week, I need those neutral looks!
I love rocking a trendy, colorful, or fully glowed up look on the weekends or for an event. But most days, I’m using a matte brown palette to do my makeup in the car outside my office building.
What’s irking me is I can’t buy a lot of my favorite brands anymore because they’re getting knocked out of stores like Ulta and Sephora in favor of “high glam, pigment, glamour” brands.
Ex: I’m a big fan of Stila, Lorac & Laura Geller. And I’m noticing every time I go into a physical store (which I prefer for product testing and metering my spending) their displays are smaller or gone.
& it’s not just - my BF is self conscious about his skin so I introduced him to BB cream: it’s hydrating, it has sun protect & it makes him feel better about his skin.
HOWEVER, whatever brand he was buying went into a “beauty guru” rebranding & he accidentally bought a “highlighting gleam” BB cream, & he was like “IT HAS GLITTER IN IT” (it had a shimmer sheen). He was mortified because to him, it was so noticeable.
We’re not all glamazon beauty gurus who can or wants to wear a full coverage beat. I’m actually noticing how many beauty content creators I watch are like “I’m doing this look, but I’m going to be hanging around the house” or “I’m going to wash this right off”
I think it’s time is real world makeup wearers speak up!

  • @angelabarron

It’s sad too because back in 2013 it was HUGE when an influencer collabed with a big brand and now they try to outshine each others collabs every other week and they don’t give eachother time to be in the spotlight. I’m just sick and tired of the beauty community at this point. I also switched to cruelty free / vegan makeup so it’s made it a lot easier for me to pick and choose certain brands only. I use up the makeup I have until the last drop or I hit pan because I get so overwhelmed by all the beauty products at the store. I miss how the community used to be. Now they just try to push products and brands down our throats and you’re not a “true” fan if you don’t buy every collab they do.

This last year I became and adult and moved out on my own, i also got my first "big girl" job, and after that I unfollowed all makeup brand Instagram accounts aside from a few indie brands. Let me tell you, I have saved so much money and my collection is actually usable now. I used to buy every new release and just stick it on afterpay until I truly realized everything I was doing. I have no idea WHY I wanted all that makeup, I grew up frugal and always saved my money if I ever did get allowance, yet here i was spending hundreds of dollars on consumables i touched once and then forgot about. So around October of last year I took all my makeup and dumped it onto the floor and grabbed what I truly loved, and gave away all my other makeup that didn't make the cut or that i literally HAD NOT TOUCHED. Colourpop was the one I spent the most on and used the least, and it makes me sick to my stomach with how much I'd buy from them and not touch ever again. I'm now saving on average 300 dollars a damn month because I just don't buy makeup anymore unless it's my foundation I use everyday or my eyebrow pencils. Now I just need to tackle my clothes and do more research on fast fashion so I can stop supporting shitty companies and ethics. We are not free until everyone is free.
I also realize I didn't clarify what I did with the makeup I got rid of. If it was still new in the packaging I gave it to my boyfriends sister because shes an actual makeup artist, if it was gently used I gave it to my best friend, younger sister, or my mom. Any excess was donated to project beauty share, unless it was just expired or gross in which it was thrown away.

This video gave me a lot to think about, just because I love a brand on me I need to do my research on their ethical and environmental standards, if they're not up there I'll need to make some changes in my future decisions

I find it very difficult to avoid green washed products. I feel like the gov or some institutions should create specific terminologies for the labels and also they should investigate these companies periodically. As consumers we are being lied to and that should be pretty much illegal.🙃

I agree with everything you say. I was far more of a consequence consumer of makeup until I started to watch beauty youtube videos and I kind of lost my mind. I had to have everything that I saw and I now realize that I have too many eye shadows that I never wear. I have gotten better now but it took me a bit to actually realize this which is kind of funny because I don't lose my mind with spending when it comes to most things. I usually wear my clothes and shoes until I can't anymore.

I had a feeling this was going to be the video. Looking forward to watching it! (also one of my three favorite channels shouting out my other 2 favorite channels in the first minute 😍)

The beauty industry baffles me. I use the same £5 foundation everyday that is so much better than any luxury foundation I’ve tried, blue eyeshadow to match my eyebrows to my hair that I use until I’ve used it all up, the same mascara for years (new tubes but same type) and donate the wands to wildlife charities to get oil out of rescues fur when I’ve finished it. All vegan and cruelty free and pretty cheap! We don’t need new stuff all the time, resist the greed!

Thank you YT algorithm for bringing this to me~
I actually recently decided that I'm not buying any more eye shadow palettes nor lipsticks until I actually finish a product. Mascara is my exception because I replace it every three months for eye safety reasons. I have three palettes, a few singles, and a trio. I want to see all of the looks I can make with them, because I have enough for the time being. FOMO is a real issue in the beauty community these past five years.
