Hey, I'm a nutritionist and I really like going the eco route but there's something that you've said in the video that is actually wrong. Wood cutting board are really heaven for bacteria, if you want to use something that is not plastic, there are other options such as marble, ceramics or glass. Other than that, i loved this video 💗
Just what I wanted to say! I work at a kitchen store that sells very high quality knives, and we don't sell glass/ceramic cutting boards. Wood is the best for maintaining the quality of your knives. Interesting to see how every cutting board has got it's pros and cons!
There was a study done at the University of Michigan comparing cutting boards and wooden cutting boards were actually shown to be safer than plastic ones. The bacteria can survive in the plastic cutting board in cuts and grooves for long times while in the wooden cutting board (that you let dry between uses) they are absorbed yes but can't multiply and die eventually when the cutting board dries.
Mari landdd it's awesome, it has a learning curve for putting it in at fist but is much more comfortable than a tampon and you can leave it in longer without TSS and you just boil it in hot water after each period and can reuse it for years because its silicone! This video is really helpful Hruclips.net/video/HgaY_PRI-mc/видео.html
I once heard someone recommend using conditioner to shave your legs hahah so that's what I do. I'm also way too lazy and only shave my legs like... once/month maybe. 😅
With wooden cutting boards you do need to remember to clean them with salt every now and again because they do tent to cling to bacteria as well just not as bad as plastic cutting boards. X
Reusable cloth produce bags! Instead of putting the fruits and vegetables at the grocery store in plastic bags you can use the reusable ones, also, bamboo toothbrushes! Great video.
Depending on what type of reusable bag you use, they can actually be worse for the environment. An organic cotton bag (what most people assume would be the best choice) has to be used 20000 times before you equal the environment impact of 1 plastic bag. Most people won’t use it 20000 times so their “eco friendly purchase” is doing more harm than good. Recycled bags like ones from Whole Foods would only need to be used 45-85 times depending on what they’re made from, so they’re a much better option.
I just use my hands to apply toner. Toner is expensive and I use way less that way because your fingers don’t absorb product like cotton rounds do. My esthetician taught me that.
trout picture Im becoming more eco friendly as well but don’t throw out your plastic Tupperware! Use them until they’re no longer useful, then purchase glass ones! :)))
My dad got me a set of those glass tupperware containers for christmas this year & I was flipping stoked (you know when you're an adult when you get excited to receive tupperware lol). They are seriously the best.
rooostercogburn some of them prevent the hair from growing back faster/thicker. That’s the only benefit I see of using them but most of the time I just use water 😂
I've been using olive oil or coconut oil to remove my (waterproof) makeup. You don't even need cotton rounds for that, you can just use your hands and it doesn't dry out your skin. You can also use oil to shave or I've just been using an epilator on my legs. For the rest I use conditioner because I feel like it's a bit more slippery. Also sugar, oil and honey is great to exfoliate with. Also it's veeery cheap. tl;dr: just use oil for everything
I have noticed that everyone is calling plastic containers “Tupperware”. I always thought that Tupperware was a brand name..the containers that your mom bought from the neighbors Tupperware party.
It is but sometimes with language the name of one thing naturally becomes the name for the whole thing. Like 9 times out of 10 you'll order a coke in a restaurant instead of cola. Kind of like when you call your car your wheels? Its a similar concept. I did half a linguistics degree can you tell? haha
You mentioned buying mini sizes for makeup and specifically mentioned saving money on something you already love however if you actually crunch the numbers, the full sizes are normally cheaper per unit than the minis. so using the benefit porefessional the mini (.25 oz.) is $48 USD per oz (or per 30 ml if you use metric) while the full size (.75 oz.) is roughly $41.33 USD per oz. then mac Fix+ mini is $12 for 1oz vs the full size which is roughly $7.65 for the same amount. Last example, mini Smashbox primer water is $16 for 1 oz while the full size is roughly half that per oz at roughly $8.21 per oz.
Mrz Hyde I think it's also worth considering whether you'd ever actually finish a full size product or if you'll just use it for a bit and it ends up just sitting in the back of your dresser somewhere. I think for something you use often and will repurchase, it's usually worth buying the full size. but for something you're just trying or will only use occasionally, the mini size may be your best bet.
I think she meant the saving was because she uses it so little if she buys a mini mascara for $5 She's going to use that up in 3 months rather than paying $15 and hardly using it. I have spent so much on foundation in my make up wearing years and never once used a full container before it expires, same with lipstick, eyeshadow, eye liner, but I have used every single bit of a sample or mini size
I’ve been really loving your videos Sarah! I even watched like 3 ads throughout the video for you 😂 I think you’re killing it ❤️💯 definitely gonna go get a washcloth and I agree with the mini sized makeup, who needs a full sized 48 different colours eyeshadow palette 😅
A Swedish friend of mine was buying glass jars to put her make up brushes in for like 2 euros each saying how cheap they were. When I told her she could just wash out some Nutella jars for free she said that was gross. "There was food in there!". Wtf 🙄
In Italy (I don't know if in the usa it's the same) we have a smaller version of Nutella jar that looks just like a normal glass you would you in your house and I swear in every Italian house there are at least a couple. For example when my family and I eat together we always use them ahaha they are so cute! :D
Here in the UK years ago nutella came in cute patterned jars that were shaped like a glass with a lid like on Pringles with the idea that you could use them for drinking or snacks. I think they even did a thing where there were like 5 patterns to collect
Me and my family does most of this stuff already, and I didnt realize that most of this stuff was considered odd... lol anyway this actually made me feel a little bit better cause I've been trying to be more eco friendly. 😊😊😊
This whole video SPEAKS TO ME, ive been on this same journey for a few years now and i LOVE that other people are picking up to the corruption of plastic!!
To keep your cutting board from cracking, use some light-scented oil or olive oil to treat the wood after washing and drying. But you should wash it minimally - if you are just cutting vegetables, a quick wipe with a damp cloth is sufficient. Wood cutting boards are the best for your knives and cooking!
My biology teacher once told me, that your lips get used to the chapstick and stop producing the oils for the skin themselves. So when you use chapstick constantly your lips will become dried out. I don't use any since, just drink enough. Sometimes just a little moisturizer and I'm good. And sorry for my bad English. Not a native :D
I feel like I do 13 out of the 15 things you mentioned, and I feel bad cause I wasn’t even trying to be eco-friendly. I’m just incredibly cheap and lazy😂 it’s great knowing that I’ve actually been eco for the last several years though! Oh I also wanted to comment on how you said you shave in the shower with body wash. You should try using your conditioner instead! You already have to buy it and like a tiny dollop will do wonders! It helps with the moisturizing that you miss out on by using body wash! It also is really smooth so shaving is really quick!
Love this video and the transition to a more mimalist and eco-friendly lifestyle. Another thing you can look at is buying a multipurpose cleaning agent like Dr Bronner's that can be used for showering all the way to washing the floor. It's concentrated, which means less packaging. It's also biodegradable :)
I use reusable straws and cups as often as possible, and don't buy shaving cream because I use a men's electric razor, which is more convenient and I don't have to worry about nicks! I also haven't bought tampons/pads in so long because I got a menstrual cup, and then got the birth control implant which means I haven't gotten a period in over a year! I've also cut back on buying new clothes, except for t-shirts from friends' organizations lol college life
I am totally with you on the chapstick I almost never use it. But my boyfriend used it all the time and his lips are always chapping up. I pretty sure chapstick is a scam.
Litafaerie I use de-pot a lol of my facial moisturizer into a tiny container and use that to make my lips soft. works just as well! also I’ve found that the more medical type lip balms (ex: Aquaphor) actually rly do work well!
I totally agree with you. I'm not a minimalist, but I continually declutter everything I own. I either sell these items on eBay or if the items don't sell after listing them thrwe times for declining pricesdonate them to Goodwill.
Love this video! I hope you make it a series because as an enviromental science student, becoming more sustaibable is something I'm always so happy to see people interested in, it's so important! and economical like you said! One thing I've done is switch over to using a reusable iced drink cup for my daily starbucks, I kind of get anxious thinking about all the un-recyclable plastic I've used just in starbucks cups and straws. They also give you a discount on your drink if you bring your own cup. I got a metal one from Klean Kanteen, love it :)
Reading all these comments makes me so happy. I love how hard we are trying to live sustainably. Thanks Sarah for opening up a family for us to discuss better ways to live.
Would you consider making a decluttering video? I know you don’t claim to be minimalist but I would love to see how you do it. I own way too much and desperately want to cut down but have no idea where to start!
Re-useable straws! I recently bought a set of straws for everyone in my family plus travel and cleaning kits. We've been loving the look of metal and have gotten so many compliments from cafe workers and patrons.
girl you are so right on the hair products. i have psoriasis patches on my scalp and i got a deep condition at my hair salon and it totally flared my condition up. all ive been doing for extra products is massaging coconut oil into my hair, and keeping it in for 2 hours, then washing it out. its been working wonders. coconut oil fixes everything
i dont use shaving cream either tbh i just use conditioner bc it's gentle on the skin + makes it rly soft as you shave so you don't get red bumps or anything it's so much easier
This is trippy. I'm going through a very similar phase right now. I think it is that i'm getting older and out of a lot of my old habits of buying things just to buy them, particularly makeup. Anyway, I've watched you for a while, and it's cool to see you doing something similar. Some of these were new to me! thanks for the ideas!
I've been getting out of the habit of just buying makeup to buy it too! I have just bought the new glossier mascara to try out, but I haven't gone into a shop and bought whatever random things in the moment in months
Jimeh YES! I feel silly now when I do head into a Walgreens, pick up random stuff I don't need, and then dislike almost all of it. It's like my tolerance for "makeup misses" is gone, which is good!
If you're crafty (sorry, I'm too new to your videos to know if you are or not) but instead of the washcloth, you can make one via knit or crochet (I prefer knitting mine and using the knit ones on myself, win/win) out of cotton yarn*. They maintain the heat from the water so much better than a regular terrycloth washcloth, and feel so much nicer. I tend to use the purl side if I want a harsher scrub if I felt like I needed it, and the knit side to be gentler on my skin. It feels so nice to use. It feels like I'm spoiling myself with something extravagant instead of a lil square I sat down and made myself. *you can use any yarn you like but cotton is cheap and feels So Nice.
Sarah I have been watching your videos for a looonngg time and to see your growth as a woman, just as a human being is something to be admired. You should be proud of yourself. You’re awesome. And..... the onion salt from Trader Joe’s is everything.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS VIDEO! I am also trying to be more conscious of what i am purchasing and whats really necessary! Love seeing this environmentally aware side of you aswell! I am in the process of living a more environmentally friendly life and looking at what environmentally friendly items I can use instead of toxic plastic things! Hopefully more people get on board! love it x
I have anxiety triggered OCD and when it's really bad I like to watch cleaning videos on youtube because then I don't have to give in for my OCD. And I was shocked how many people used paper towels to clean things! I'm from Denmark, and in every household I know they use cloths, rags and towels to clean things. In my house we only use paper towels when eating (which can easily be changed into cloth napkins too, I'm going to look into that) and to clean off dog... things.... But I was so in shock over the amount of videos (mostly American/English) that used paper towels! I'm glad you've reduced your use too. As you say, every little HELPS! Also recently bought stainless steel straws. Never going back to plastic!
I agree with everything you've talked about the only thing I do keep is 1 wood cutting board for fruits, veggies, nuts, breads, etc. and a big plastic one for any meat! Since we do eat some meat in our house we want to avoid cross contamination when we cook! Plus the wood can hold on to any bacteria since you can't properly disinfect like you can with the plastic one! So its easy clean up without the stress of us getting sick! But if you don't eat meat there's no need for a plastic one! Other than that I couldn't agree more with everything else! Loved the video! ❤️
I work at a shop that makes hand made wood products and if you use mineral oil in your wooden boards/bowls ect. you can just put some oil on a sponge or washcloth and just massage it in. it will keep them hydrated and help prevent cracking. Also when you wash them dont use a lot of soap and also dont soak them in the water because that can cause it to crack and break apart a lot faster. usually what I do to wash my wood products is rinse out the sponge so theres only a tiny bit of soap left on it and give it a good scrub then immediately rinse it off!
This is actually useful, unlike most of the minimalist videos which are about throwing out everything (even if it's clear you will have to repurchase lots of these things in next few months).
My mom taught me to use body wash instead of shaving cream because it works just as well and saves you money! This video inspires me to cut down on my spending and really consider if I need certain things or not, thank you
First, im so happy, actually happy, that u been posting so often 😃 and im so happy to that u have made this video!!!! I love it! 🎉 now im gonna tell u what things i dont buy anymore: •Lipsticks. I have so many that i really dont need another one. •eyeshadow or eyeshadow palettes for the same reason. •foundation. Cause i just put concealer in my face, i dont wear foundation, and if i do, just once a year. •makeup brushes cause with the ones i own, i think its enought to put on some makeup. •clothg in general, or shoes cause i have enought clothes for every season, unless i need something specific (of course, temptation is still there lol). • so many creams. I only buy a cream such as hand cream, face night or day cream, only when i finish the one that im using. There is no need to buy a lot of creams at one time. And this aplies to serums, tonic, shampoo, conditioner, face and hair mask, oils, and so on. •aand what i wear to contain food or whatever, its icecream “boxes” idk the name, but when the icecream finish, i clean the container and use it for put fruits or food in the fridge, its not very eco friendly cause its still plastic, but that way u dont throught it in the garbage nor buy a plastic container.
Camicat The amount of creams I used to own was ridic 😂😂 one for each body part basically now I've got one for my face, one for my body and in Winter I use coconut oil a couple times a week so easy haha
Same, with a vision disability I see better with contacts than with glasses so there's the cleaner and the saline bottles which are plastic 😕 but it's about getting rid of plastic things that you can do in your life, I can easily carry around a metal straw but I need contact cleaner for my contacts which help me see better and therefore ultimately make me happy 🌞
yep-theres so much-from not being able to cook-need single meals, or cut vegetables etc-single use cut or cooked food-if you have a stoma you needlots of plastic equipment, if you use catheters, need straws but prone to infections-also may need disposableplastic gloves regularly, and on a veyr low budget! also several things out ofplastic to help with a bowel programme.. also, you may use more electric to charge up equipment, use a ton of petrol using a big disabled van, it's difficult being eco concious and disabled! need specific cartons/packaging for ease ofopening-many shower gels comeinpackaging i cant open-so thechoices aremore limitedto choose eco friendly things. i do reusuable cloth pads though and biodegradable items as i can. theres way more but just cant think of them right now.
yeahhh I feel you. I just made a huge paragraph comment on here about how people (like me) with contamination phobias and those with OCD sometimes can’t function without disposable options. I get that people want everyone to be more eco friendly, but I wish that community wouldn’t be so “you are single handily killing the planet, it’s only you’re fault cause you use plastic water bottles” about it. (not that Sarah was doing this, but it’s something I see quite often)
Layla Sjolander fair enough, maybe I'll invest in glass if I start making myself nicer lunches, for now I'm still the kid with a sandwich in a bread bag!
Hey Sarah, I also recommend Vitamin E oil for your skin. Its healing and fights free radicals so it is anti-aging. It has been a wonder for my skin and you only need a drop of it so it lasts for years. I have had the same bottle for a year now.
I am such a huge magazine fan because I like folding paper and fashion magazines have really beautiful, colorful and interesting pages. Second-hand clothes are great! especially if you're into upcycling and can adjust your own clothes.
Feline Pine is also a great litter option. A 22lb bag is somewhere around $9 and it's just condensed pine shavings that become sawdust when they get wet. It covers the litter box smell with a natural one and is so much easier than the clay litter was
Love the idea of the wooden cutting board! However, they actually hold more bacteria than a plastic one, as long as it gets cleaned good, a way better option! Love this video 😍
Coconut oil is also a great addition too almost everything. You can use it as a hydration mask for your hair. It also has antibacterial properties. And it’s an amazing makeup remover.
For the wood cutting board you have to be careful not to get it too wet! I know that’s easier said then done, because you have to wash it after all. But if it’s wet for any reason, try and dry it as soon as you can to keep it from cracking.
Ikea cutting boards are really ok if you remember to oil them. If it has a lot of cracks, give it a light sanding, wipe of the dust with a damp towl, let it dry and then use a rag and spread for example olive oil on to the board. I've had my Ikea bamboo cutting board for four years without any signs of cracking. And you should of course wash it by hand.
A few weeks ago i made my own reusable grocery bags. I bought $1 fat quarter fabric from walmart and 2 of them can make one bag. I used a template i found online. Its so nice to not get plastic bags at every store!
My cat also has an overgrooming problem, I'm definitely going to stop buying the scented clumping litter! I'll do anything for my baby even if cleaning it is gonna suck LOL thanks for the tip!
I have rose gold stainless steel straws! I'm moving to a new city soon so I decluttered many of my magazines; I felt bad getting rid of so many that I didn't even read. So now, I just have 3 newer magazines that I am for sure going to make sure to read!
A good exfoliator is also coffee grind and coconut oil or olive oil. The oils are bomb for your skin and the coffee isn't too gritty for the delicate skin on your face.
I just use the razors with moisture bars and don't use anything with them 🤷🏻♀️ I totally agree about the paper towels and the glass jars! I only keep paper towels around for kitty/bug messes and the Classico jars are legit my favorite things to store bulk foods in. Great video! 💕
Also if you like another amazing scrub/exfoliator is 4 teaspoons of sugar 4-6 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil and 2 tea bags mixed together is amazing!
conditioner works well for shaving as well! just gotta let it sit for a little bit so that it has a chance to soften the hair :) & I use coconut or olive oil as a mask, sometimes mixed with eggs. works much better than products in the store!
I totally agree with you with the no chapstick! I've found that the more I use Vaseline (lip balm), the dryer my lips were getting. But the big vaseline tubs that are for babies were good for my lips.... It's very strage as the products feel identical but do very different things to my lips.
I ended up sewing my own cotton rounds out of thrifted flannel, super easy! I just keep them in an old cleaned out jelly jar, and I wash them the same way in a garment bag. I also use old jars to store tea leaves when i buy loose leaf tea (which is 99% what i buy, teabags are kinda wasteful and lower grade tea)
amen to the minimal skincare!! i had clear skin in my teens but once i got to college had a bad bout of perioral dermatitis. first thing the dermatologist did was take me off all the fancy irritating products i didn't even need!! so much clearer skin now, and literally all i use is a cheap salycilyc acid wash and rosehip oil.
I shave my legs maybe once a week, and I never use shaving cream, or conditioner. Just water while taking a shower. I have extremely sensitive skin, and I found that by just using water, I avoid a lot of uncessary irritation. I do lather up with lotion afterwards, but that's also because I have eczema. For my lips I use petroleum jelly. You can get a big jar of it at a good price, and it's also very versatile. Another good option for ppl who suffer from eczema.
I'm from México, my mom showed me to use honey, lemon and sugar as a scrub, she is from a small town at that is what she used to use. It works SO GOOD for me (for face and body). Depending on how "strog" I want it I put more sugar or sometimes I grind the sugar with a cup if I want a gentler scrub. I've felt tempted to buy scrubs so many times because of those cute containers and all the shit that they promess but then I remember that I already have a scrub at home that I just need to put together :) Not at days we are in constant war against marketing
Yess thrifting is the way to go for clothing! It's good for the environment and it's often cheaper. It gets out my itch for shopping and new (to me) fashion without contributing to the fast fashion industry.
That mini sized makeup tip is actually really good when it comes to mascara. I feel like i actually use all of the product instead having to toss half of it when it gets old and dried out.
reusable cups at starbucks! i dont drink it as often as i used to, but using my own cup when i go now is better for the environment and you get a small discount too! in a similar vein, i bring my own cutlery and straw when i eat out so i dont need o pick up plastic ones later throw away.
On the topic of cutting down on paper towels, my mother always cuts up old clothes (especially underwear or severely worn-out/stained items), bedclothes, towels and etc to use as either disposable or semi-disposable cleaning cloths. Obviously, if you try to buy more sustainable items, you may not have as much of this 'waste', but it's still a great way to reuse what is seemingly trash))
I rinse all my reusable cloths in boiling hot water which kills a lot of bacteria. I use a washable period pad when I sleep & a divacup during the day; it's more money up front than regular tampons & pads, but you'll save a lot of money in the long run. With cat litter, I actually just use sand from the beach near my building, I go down there & fill up a pretty sizeable bag once a week, my cat really likes it. It's a bit harder to clean, but ultimately such a moneysaver.
I love this changes! You give me motivation do do this by myself. I started a while ago but didn't do it all ot once. I think I will try some of your advices :)
for the aloe vera, do you use it like a face wash and wash it off after, or do you just rub it into the skin like you would a moisturizer? I have a lot of redness and acne as well, so I wanna try this out!
I use it just like you would a serum! I take a pea sized amount and rub that in and wait a few minutes before putting on my moisturizer. I’ve also used it as kind of a “mask” and put a thick layer on super red areas (the tip of my nose lol) but I’m not sure if it actually does anymore than just a thin layer!
We luv a sustainable queen
Hey, I'm a nutritionist and I really like going the eco route but there's something that you've said in the video that is actually wrong. Wood cutting board are really heaven for bacteria, if you want to use something that is not plastic, there are other options such as marble, ceramics or glass.

using non-porous surfaces as cutting boards is actually really bad for your knives so I don't recommend it if you have expensive ones!
Just what I wanted to say! I work at a kitchen store that sells very high quality knives, and we don't sell glass/ceramic cutting boards. Wood is the best for maintaining the quality of your knives. Interesting to see how every cutting board has got it's pros and cons!

wait, does that mean it's the same with bamboo toothbrushes? that bacteria just sticks to them?
@@Morgenrot333 bamboo is actually bacteria resistant so it's the safest to use for cutting boards, toothbrushes, etc.
Tampons/pads are something I quit buying 2 years ago since I switch to the diva cup and it’s a godsend.
Lindsey R. Same!
How does it work
Mari landdd it's awesome, it has a learning curve for putting it in at fist but is much more comfortable than a tampon and you can leave it in longer without TSS and you just boil it in hot water after each period and can reuse it for years because its silicone! This video is really helpful

I once heard someone recommend using conditioner to shave your legs hahah so that's what I do. I'm also way too lazy and only shave my legs like... once/month maybe. 😅
Oh and I LOVE this set up! Super awesome!
yep thats what i use as well
As someone with very dry skin, who prefers shower oils those work amazing to shave with, but also have two purposes.
Eyyy fellow swede 😁 ha en bra dag! 😊
I've only ever just used my body soap to shave my legs. I never really got the reason that people bought separate shaving creams for that
Just a heads up to anyone IF YOU HAVE A RUBBER OR LATEX ALLERGY DO NOT USE ALOE VERA! Aloe compounds are similar/related and you will get a reaction!
With wooden cutting boards you do need to remember to clean them with salt every now and again because they do tent to cling to bacteria as well just not as bad as plastic cutting boards. X
Getting my glass tupperware felt like the pinnacle of adulthood
hahaha same
Totally
I noticed in the last few videos that your skin looks so good and you just look brighter and prettier.
Reusable cloth produce bags! Instead of putting the fruits and vegetables at the grocery store in plastic bags you can use the reusable ones, also, bamboo toothbrushes!
Great video.
Yep I do this! Plus we get discounts for every reusable bag we use at checkout. I shop at Whole Foods and I think* it's 25 cents off for every bag.
Yes!! These are the best bags ever, I use them every time I shop x
Depending on what type of reusable bag you use, they can actually be worse for the environment. An organic cotton bag (what most people assume would be the best choice) has to be used 20000 times before you equal the environment impact of 1 plastic bag.
Or you could get a spray on
this makes me want to clean my house and buy glass containers
trout picture Im becoming more eco friendly as well but don’t throw out your plastic Tupperware! Use them until they’re no longer useful, then purchase glass ones! :)))
My dad got me a set of those glass tupperware containers for christmas this year & I was flipping stoked (you know when you're an adult when you get excited to receive tupperware lol). They are seriously the best.
i use conditioner to shave my legs 🤗
tens same! multipurpose 😂🤷🏼♀️
R me too. What is the point of shaving cream? I bought one once and the only thing it did was tell me where I shaved.
Same, I've never owned shaving cream.
rooostercogburn some of them prevent the hair from growing back faster/thicker. That’s the only benefit I see of using them but most of the time I just use water 😂
A chemical exfoliant works soooo much better than a physical exfoliant for me
I've been using olive oil or coconut oil to remove my (waterproof) makeup.
Also menstrual cups instead of tampons. Tampons are way too expensive anyway for the amount you need of them in your lifetime.
I have noticed that everyone is calling plastic containers “Tupperware”. I always thought that Tupperware was a brand name..the containers that your mom bought from the neighbors Tupperware party.
very true very true lol just like I kept saying ChapStick even tho that’s a brand name when I meant lip balm in general 😂
It is but sometimes with language the name of one thing naturally becomes the name for the whole thing. Like 9 times out of 10 you'll order a coke in a restaurant instead of cola. Kind of like when you call your car your wheels? Its a similar concept. I did half a linguistics degree can you tell? haha
It's called a proprietary eponym, i.e. a brand name used to refer to something, even if the thing in question is not actually made by that brand.
Like Kleenex!
portlandjetaime Kleenex, chapstick, and bandaid, right?
Exactly. She is not saving buying samples.
it only depends on how much of the product would get used, if you go by their use by dates then you usually cant use it all up
I think she meant the saving was because she uses it so little if she buys a mini mascara for $5 She's going to use that up in 3 months rather than paying $15 and hardly using it.
Wtf 🙄
I'm using Nutella jars cause the limited edition was so cute, I had to keep it :')
I clean out glass candle jars and use those so I dont waste them in the trash.
Nenebeautyy we have them in Belgium as well!
your hair ALWAYS looks so good. like, you are just glowing in general!! totally off topic but I just can't ignore how fckin good you look, girl!!
aw thank you! I decided not to do my hair for the video and was self conscious with how it looked but thank you so much for your sweet words!
I don’t buy shaving cream too! I usually just use my soap or body wash lol!
krystalinthecity • same
I love this!!!! I love sustainability and caring more for the planet! I don't shop at fast fashion stores as much as I use to!
Me and my family does most of this stuff already, and I didnt realize that most of this stuff was considered odd... lol anyway this actually made me feel a little bit better cause I've been trying to be more eco friendly. 😊😊😊
It's so great to see a bigger youtubers like yourself becoming more passionate about the environment 💖 keep up the good work!
Kim Brulee there are oils specifically for cutting boards, like mineral oil. olive oil can actually spoil on your board. Bees wax is also good.
This is true too. My dad has been using olive oil for years and it's been fine but it's also really good quality oil and the wood isn't as porous.
That explains why my last cuttingboard ended up cracking and after not using it for months it molded. Quite nasty haha.
It's also biodegradable :)
.
I've also cut back on buying new clothes, except for t-shirts from friends' organizations lol college life
You can also donate magazines to local schools. Art teachers can use them for student projects.
But I love carmex. I used it when my lips were sooooo dry I couldn’t even smile! It helped so much! Instant!
I am so happy you've started this new plan for your channel. I am a big lover of the simplicity of life and always looking to learn new ideas. ♥️♥️♥️
I just switched to reusable facial rounds too. Good tip on keeping a laundry bag handy for collecting the used ones, thanks!
girl you are so right on the hair products. i have psoriasis patches on my scalp and i got a deep condition at my hair salon and it totally flared my condition up. all ive been doing for extra products is massaging coconut oil into my hair, and keeping it in for 2 hours, then washing it out. its been working wonders. coconut oil fixes everything
i dont use shaving cream either tbh i just use conditioner bc it's gentle on the skin + makes it rly soft as you shave so you don't get red bumps or anything it's so much easier
kipp I'll have to Try this. I've tried the shaving with body wash trick, but my skin is too sensitive
I don't even own real glasses... in this house we drink out of old pickle, spaghetti sauce and salsa jars.
I also don’t use shaving cream! I just use some inexpensive conditioner instead.
Totally going to use the laundry bag trick for my reusable cotton rounds. I'm always digging through my laundry to find them.
Yesss Sarah, I love how you start creating minimalist/eco friendly content! I'd love to see more!
Hopefully more people get on board! love it x
Conditioner is a great substitute for shaving cream much cheaper and hydrates the body parts people like to shave .
Amanda Weaver • 😍 I will try it!
22 minutes of Sarah . YESSS!
Lol, the ad in the video was for a Dove exfoliator. I didn't know about disposable cotton rounds! Thanks for the tip!
I love it! 🎉 now im gonna tell u what things i dont buy anymore:
•Lipsticks.
Being disabled I use disposable items quiet often and don't have a choice. Annoys me lol
Sarah Camley Yep I’ve realised this since my mum became disabled there is a load of plastic but its hygiene so it’s essential don’t feel bad :)
Sounds heavy carrying around a glass water bottle and glass Tupperware... Sounds amazing for the fridge though :) love all these ideas
maggilymoop I do like a lighter-weight water bottle but I love my glass bowls for my lunches at school. I don’t notice the extra weight 😊
Layla Sjolander fair enough, maybe I'll invest in glass if I start making myself nicer lunches, for now I'm still the kid with a sandwich in a bread bag!
I think steel water bottles are lighter. They're also nice if you're a klutz. lol
I’m loving the look today!!
Off topic but I love that sweater paired with that top on you ❤️
Hey Sarah, I also recommend Vitamin E oil for your skin.
Yessss, keep the minimalism vids coming:)
Feline Pine is also a great litter option. A 22lb bag is somewhere around $9 and it's just condensed pine shavings that become sawdust when they get wet. It covers the litter box smell with a natural one and is so much easier than the clay litter was
I have used vaseline in replace of chapstick and it works really well
Love the idea of the wooden cutting board!
I use conditioner for shaving cream! It works amazingly and makes my skin soooooo soft!!
This is such a good video! I really want to invest in the glassware. I agree with you on saving the environment, every bit helps.
Girl, I haven't ever bought shaving cream! Been using conditioner since middle school to shave or coconut oil. Really makes the skin soft!
conditioner works well for shaving as well! just gotta let it sit for a little bit so that it has a chance to soften the hair :) & I use coconut or olive oil as a mask, sometimes mixed with eggs. works much better than products in the store!
Not purchasing full size makeup is such a great idea! I don’t wear makeup everyday but I’d like to try some products. Thank you so much for this
I’ve been watching you for years and usually never comment but I just wanted to say I think you’re great and so real
amen to the minimal skincare!! i had clear skin in my teens but once i got to college had a bad bout of perioral dermatitis. first thing the dermatologist did was take me off all the fancy irritating products i didn't even need!! so much clearer skin now, and literally all i use is a cheap salycilyc acid wash and rosehip oil.
Great video. I also don't buy shaving gel (I use soap) and I don't purchase chapstick. I drink a lot of water and that seems to do the trick.
Great video! I use chapstick for sun protection when I'm going to be out in the sun for a while.
For shaving I use a moisturising body wash like Dove or a cheap conditioner which I find works better than shave gel.
Loved this video Sarah! Keep it up with three style of videos it seems like you’re really in your element talking about this topic :)
For exfoliating your skin you can also use an homemade scrub made with cane sugar and honey. I usually shave with soap or shower gel :)
I’ve also used it as kind of a “mask” and put a thick layer on super red areas (the tip of my nose lol) but I’m not sure if it actually does anymore than just a thin layer!
oh okay awesome thank you!!!! super helpful video! :)
