When you watch Rick interview famous musicians there is always this transition from tension to relaxation on the part of the "star" Its instantly apparent that Rick Beato is a formally trained musician/songwriter/teacher. A lot of people we look up to aren't formally trained. It was refreshing to see Justin be so casual about it. Watch the Sting and Billy Corgan interviews and you'll see both men on guard (Literally arms crossed and defensive)for the first bit and by the middle they realize Rick isn't beating them up as he is a true fan of their special genius. Then the floodgates open and he gets the best interviews you've ever seen. So yeah I can see here that there won't be a uncomfortable beginning interview section because Justin is so comfortable in his own skin.
Thanks for posting this. I nixed the Sting interview after 5 minutes because I thought Sting was too uptight and reticent. I'll have to watch the whole interview. I loved Rick's interview with Billy Corgan. Check out his interview with Thomas Newman. That was the most fascinating from a musical & creative standpoint.
@@carlmarks8170 it's probably the best Sting interview ever because Sting is *usually* uptight, but as the conversation with Rick progresses, he becomes more and more relaxed, it's almost fascinating to watch.

Worked with a band in the early 2000's that had worked with him. I unfortunately did not get to, but the music he helped with was the best on the record. Really missed out not getting to meet him.
If you see "blue collar" looking into a studio with a good $1M in gear...then I'm afraid you might be interpreting the phrase too literally. Wearing a denim button down doesn't make you "blue collar"!😂 (Ironically, Rick wears whatever he likes because he is self employed.) And being rich doesn't necessarily make you a greedy monster. 🤷♂️

I love this because it confirms a suspicion of mine that artists don't always know quite what it is they're doing. I'm an author (under a different name) and I read reviews or analyses of my books and think, "Huh, did not realize I was doing that." I especially love when someone credits me with being inspired by an author who, invariably, I've never heard of.
Definitely. Especially in the Rock world. It's like Rick always says, "they may not know what they are doing, but I do". For many it's just been a long time of learning by listening. Personally I don't believe there is any "magic" in song writing. It's just a skill like any other. I mean...it's still amazing when you hear someone write something and realize you would never write like that and wonder how they came up with it, but ultimately that's just a product of their influences and how they improvise around those influences. To me it's like a sliding scale where you have technique on one end and song writing/arranging at the other. People who spend the majority of their time practicing licks and scales and speed and chops etc...are going to be more to the technique side and people who spend all their time listening to their favorite artists, copying the styles and arrangements and then improvising over what they learn, become the amazing writers. It's what made a guy like Eddie Van Halen so special. He had buckets of skill, but also understood all the writing and arranging side of it too.
I think they know what they’re doing in that they are creating sounds that they have in their head. They might not know the formal name of the chord they are using, but practice has always preceded the theory.
@@doublestrokeroll Just because you understand and enjoy the technical side of things does not mean that you can't write a great song. This is the bs argument that ppl like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani have no soul or heart in their music- when the reality is their music is dripping with it. Steve is one of, if not the most, expressive guitarists to ever play- he can put more feeling and emotion into one note than most guys can squeeze into a full solo. Bands like Polyphia put out amazing music all the time- it doesn't get much more technically oriented than that stuff. I would argue "stylized' and "technical" are basically the same thing- which means guys like Guthrie Govan are extremely technical when you think about it. Mike Dawes is very technical. They're just utilizing new techniques they came up with. Hell, even pure pentatonic blues is a technique- if you want to be strict about the definition. So really, I don't even get this argument, it makes no sense. Everyone, including you- uses technique.
@@stoneysdead689 For sure. I totally agree. But ultimately "soul" and "heart" are 100% subjective no matter how much people like to think they can objectively "hear" it. For example I think there is more "soul" and "heart" in your average Chemical Brothers song than anything I've ever heard from Joe Bonamassa. That guy is as boring to me as any music I've ever heard. I get nothing emotional from it whatsoever. Having said that, I would never argue that his fans are wrong for getting emotion from him. And sorry, but I really don't like Guthrie Govan's music. Again...I don't get anything from it. I appreciate the talent. Guy is amazing and I wish I had a pinkie's worth of his chops....lol...but musically he just doesn't do it for me. Having said all that, there are, again in my opinion, many examples of great technical players, who songs are not written or arranged very well and really kind of just serve as a vehicle for their technique. A perfectly valid thing to do, but not something I'm very interested in. And I would argue by the fairly limited appeal said artists "technical" music tends to have amongst the greater population, a lot of people feel that way. Again...I'm not saying "better". There is no better in music. But the ability to write catchy melodic music that has very clever arrangements is a thing. It's a skill, and not everyone is great at it.
It’s interesting and entertaining to watch this. I enjoyed music from The Darkness as a band. But getting a glimpse of Justin as a person is something I wouldn’t have gotten growing up because there just wasn’t a platform for it. Really cool.

The algorithms collide! Been a RB subscriber for quite some time and his music knowledge is expansive, most of all he’s genial, genuine and good for the musical soul. The musical ear he has is not in everyone’s gift and he is encouraging to musicians whatever their level; listener to seasoned sessioneer.
I would love to see a chat between yourself and Dan, talking about each others experiences leading up to and being part of the Darkness and how you managed to avoid the battling siblings in a band troupe or if indeed there is some bitter under lying resentments that can be captured in a live chat environment 😆

As fascinating as Rick is on all things music, what is the most impressive thing to watch is what he's done with his son Dylan. That is the most perfect pitch I have ever seen or heard. If you haven't seen him demonstrate his perfect pitch, go and watch it before you reply to this comment. Rick will play these incredibly complex chords on the piano and Dylan nails it every single time. He was immersed in complex, high information music since he was born. Literally. Like I said, the most amazing thing Rick has ever accomplished. In my opinion. He may disagree
After all this time, hearing Rick and Justin pick apart the theme, I finally realize what it reminds me of!!! The All in the Family theme song. “Gee, our old LaSalle ran greaaaaaaaat!”
Rick is one of the most important people in music at the moment, Millions of people are learning about the nuts and bolts of "songs" and how to construct them, how to approach music at all levels from watching him do his stuff. He's made me a better (amateur) songwriter and producer than I would ever have dreamed possible and I'm sure that better musicians than me will take his knowledge a lot further than I could.
Clearly not. I mean the person that wrote the theme tune said that he doesn't know a B diminished from an F# augmented - but he wrote it regardless. So clearly the name is immaterial and using the name is not as important as you're suggesting. It's like the over analysis of Beatles songs. Paul did many or all of their songs by strumming on a guitar and singing over the top or poking away at the piano. Both until he got something he liked the sound of. Maybe George Martin threw in some of his knowledge. You can see in one of the Get Back videos Harrison asking an actual musician who turned up (George Benson) what a particular chord they were using is - and he tells them, but it was obviously not that important to the success of the beatles was it? If you play a triad and move each note up or down you're going to find the minors, suspended chords, the diminished and augmented chords etc and hear the sound they make. Or you can stack thirds, play 2 triads together. If you're interested in music you can learn it but it's really peripheral. In fact it's the least important aspect, developing an ear is more important and being able to imagine music in your head and then play that on the instrument. I mean no jazz musician who is improvising over changes is thinking "I'm going to play a flattened 5th" because by the time you've had that thought you've missed the beat. You'll note how many interviews Beato has had with big artists who he's telling them they used a flat 5 augmented suspended add 9 whatever and they just stare at him blankly.
@@michael1 So you type all that about that one aspect of what he can do that you don't see the value in and therefor he has no effect on anything at all. I'd be the first to agree that ear comes first but all that knowledge he has on the subject can only be more tools at hand. Every different angle you look at music from is a new and inspiring perspective and leads to deeper understanding and the only reason I can see for the point you're making is that you resent theory because you don't get it.
@@michael1 Theory is a tool to help you master your craft faster! Why do you think Jazz musicians (or many of the great musicians) spend endless time with scales, arpegios, chord studies .... until it is ingraind in their head so they don't have to think any more, just create music?
@@rogerforsman5064 I think they do it primarily because they make a mistake of believing that knowing a scale will tell them what notes they can or can't play. Then they switch to arpeggios when they note that often playing a note that's in the scale doesn't work - again it's all struggling to understand the flawed idea "theory" will tell them what notes they should or shouldn't be playing. By the time they've learnt enough to realise that's not how music works they've done all that stuff regardless that it's not as helpful as you appear to have mistakenly believed. At that point you're left with 12 notes and you can play any of them over anything. The trick is deciding what noise you want to make before you play. Typically when people go to theory it's because they have some aesthetic notion of how they want their solo to sound - like they want the notes to "fit" and the mistake the scale and arpeggio approach was suggesting some notes are "wrong" and others are "right", really though the idea the player is playing in tune and notes that "fit" has more to do with the timing of the so-called "wrong" notes and "right" notes. Aside from the fact that all that earlier practise was just a lot of "playing notes" - which is useful in itself because you're getting better at playing notes - it's wasted time in terms of "what notes should I play?" leading towards the realisation that you can play anything - any note, over any chord in any sequence. Oops though that still doesn't tell you what you should play. If you're looking for that, yes, you can learn to play what other people have played before or scales, arpeggios - and you can get some "wrong" notes included by adding techniques like "approach notes" which your hypothetical great musician isn't playing because he only plays scales or arpeggios. Maybe he's not that great after all eh? So I'd suggest that most musicians are learning these things because they aren't great. They do it just like when the would-be rock musician starts learning saying "you can play anything" would just leave him bewildered by an excess of choice and without a well enough developed ear to be able to think "I listened to this Black Sabbath album and I want to make the noises they are" - if he had perfect pitch or a lot of patience he could just listen and then find those noises. But, equally you can show him some root and fifth chords and a scale you call pentatonic or blues and he takes in that information as "this are the notes I can play" - but that's not expanding his mind - that's limiting his mind until he's sufficiently developed as a musician to not need the artificial restriction of a scale. Look at how many rock-based tutorials are "how to break out of scale boxes" - trying to undo the damage so to speak. Of course many a musician may well create a lot of great songs, maybe even have a big rock star career without ever developing as a musician beyond these scale shapes - but it's a big mistake to believe that is what you need to learn to play and most definitely a mistake to believe this is part of being a great musician.

Great producers like Rick are pivotal to making any artist take that next step in elevating their sound. As we saw from this video, they can explain it to you what you did with your own composition lol and how you can improve it further. Rick's knowledge of music is astounding.

I love this because it confirms a suspicion of mine that artists don't always know quite what it is they're doing. I'm an author (under a different name) and I read reviews or analyses of my books and think, "Huh, did not realize I was doing that." I especially love when someone credits me with being inspired by an author who, invariably, I've never heard of.
Definitely. Especially in the Rock world. It's like Rick always says, "they may not know what they are doing, but I do". For many it's just been a long time of learning by listening. Personally I don't believe there is any "magic" in song writing. It's just a skill like any other. I mean...it's still amazing when you hear someone write something and realize you would never write like that and wonder how they came up with it, but ultimately that's just a product of their influences and how they improvise around those influences.
To me it's like a sliding scale where you have technique on one end and song writing/arranging at the other. People who spend the majority of their time practicing licks and scales and speed and chops etc...are going to be more to the technique side and people who spend all their time listening to their favorite artists, copying the styles and arrangements and then improvising over what they learn, become the amazing writers.
It's what made a guy like Eddie Van Halen so special. He had buckets of skill, but also understood all the writing and arranging side of it too.
I think they know what they’re doing in that they are creating sounds that they have in their head. They might not know the formal name of the chord they are using, but practice has always preceded the theory.
@@doublestrokeroll Just because you understand and enjoy the technical side of things does not mean that you can't write a great song. This is the bs argument that ppl like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani have no soul or heart in their music- when the reality is their music is dripping with it. Steve is one of, if not the most, expressive guitarists to ever play- he can put more feeling and emotion into one note than most guys can squeeze into a full solo. Bands like Polyphia put out amazing music all the time- it doesn't get much more technically oriented than that stuff. I would argue "stylized' and "technical" are basically the same thing- which means guys like Guthrie Govan are extremely technical when you think about it. Mike Dawes is very technical. They're just utilizing new techniques they came up with. Hell, even pure pentatonic blues is a technique- if you want to be strict about the definition. So really, I don't even get this argument, it makes no sense. Everyone, including you- uses technique.
@@stoneysdead689 For sure. I totally agree. But ultimately "soul" and "heart" are 100% subjective no matter how much people like to think they can objectively "hear" it.
For example I think there is more "soul" and "heart" in your average Chemical Brothers song than anything I've ever heard from Joe Bonamassa. That guy is as boring to me as any music I've ever heard. I get nothing emotional from it whatsoever. Having said that, I would never argue that his fans are wrong for getting emotion from him.
And sorry, but I really don't like Guthrie Govan's music. Again...I don't get anything from it. I appreciate the talent. Guy is amazing and I wish I had a pinkie's worth of his chops....lol...but musically he just doesn't do it for me.
Having said all that, there are, again in my opinion, many examples of great technical players, who songs are not written or arranged very well and really kind of just serve as a vehicle for their technique. A perfectly valid thing to do, but not something I'm very interested in. And I would argue by the fairly limited appeal said artists "technical" music tends to have amongst the greater population, a lot of people feel that way. Again...I'm not saying "better". There is no better in music. But the ability to write catchy melodic music that has very clever arrangements is a thing. It's a skill, and not everyone is great at it.

The algorithms collide! Been a RB subscriber for quite some time and his music knowledge is expansive, most of all he’s genial, genuine and good for the musical soul. The musical ear he has is not in everyone’s gift and he is encouraging to musicians whatever their level; listener to seasoned sessioneer.

As fascinating as Rick is on all things music, what is the most impressive thing to watch is what he's done with his son Dylan. That is the most perfect pitch I have ever seen or heard. If you haven't seen him demonstrate his perfect pitch, go and watch it before you reply to this comment. Rick will play these incredibly complex chords on the piano and Dylan nails it every single time. He was immersed in complex, high information music since he was born. Literally. Like I said, the most amazing thing Rick has ever accomplished. In my opinion. He may disagree

Rick is one of the most important people in music at the moment, Millions of people are learning about the nuts and bolts of "songs" and how to construct them, how to approach music at all levels from watching him do his stuff. He's made me a better (amateur) songwriter and producer than I would ever have dreamed possible and I'm sure that better musicians than me will take his knowledge a lot further than I could.
Clearly not. I mean the person that wrote the theme tune said that he doesn't know a B diminished from an F# augmented - but he wrote it regardless. So clearly the name is immaterial and using the name is not as important as you're suggesting. It's like the over analysis of Beatles songs. Paul did many or all of their songs by strumming on a guitar and singing over the top or poking away at the piano. Both until he got something he liked the sound of. Maybe George Martin threw in some of his knowledge. You can see in one of the Get Back videos Harrison asking an actual musician who turned up (George Benson) what a particular chord they were using is - and he tells them, but it was obviously not that important to the success of the beatles was it? If you play a triad and move each note up or down you're going to find the minors, suspended chords, the diminished and augmented chords etc and hear the sound they make. Or you can stack thirds, play 2 triads together. If you're interested in music you can learn it but it's really peripheral. In fact it's the least important aspect, developing an ear is more important and being able to imagine music in your head and then play that on the instrument. I mean no jazz musician who is improvising over changes is thinking "I'm going to play a flattened 5th" because by the time you've had that thought you've missed the beat. You'll note how many interviews Beato has had with big artists who he's telling them they used a flat 5 augmented suspended add 9 whatever and they just stare at him blankly.
@@michael1 So you type all that about that one aspect of what he can do that you don't see the value in and therefor he has no effect on anything at all. I'd be the first to agree that ear comes first but all that knowledge he has on the subject can only be more tools at hand. Every different angle you look at music from is a new and inspiring perspective and leads to deeper understanding and the only reason I can see for the point you're making is that you resent theory because you don't get it.

@@michael1 Theory is a tool to help you master your craft faster! Why do you think Jazz musicians (or many of the great musicians) spend endless time with scales, arpegios, chord studies .... until it is ingraind in their head so they don't have to think any more, just create music?
@@rogerforsman5064 I think they do it primarily because they make a mistake of believing that knowing a scale will tell them what notes they can or can't play. Then they switch to arpeggios when they note that often playing a note that's in the scale doesn't work - again it's all struggling to understand the flawed idea "theory" will tell them what notes they should or shouldn't be playing. By the time they've learnt enough to realise that's not how music works they've done all that stuff regardless that it's not as helpful as you appear to have mistakenly believed. At that point you're left with 12 notes and you can play any of them over anything. The trick is deciding what noise you want to make before you play. Typically when people go to theory it's because they have some aesthetic notion of how they want their solo to sound - like they want the notes to "fit" and the mistake the scale and arpeggio approach was suggesting some notes are "wrong" and others are "right", really though the idea the player is playing in tune and notes that "fit" has more to do with the timing of the so-called "wrong" notes and "right" notes. Aside from the fact that all that earlier practise was just a lot of "playing notes" - which is useful in itself because you're getting better at playing notes - it's wasted time in terms of "what notes should I play?" leading towards the realisation that you can play anything - any note, over any chord in any sequence. Oops though that still doesn't tell you what you should play. If you're looking for that, yes, you can learn to play what other people have played before or scales, arpeggios - and you can get some "wrong" notes included by adding techniques like "approach notes" which your hypothetical great musician isn't playing because he only plays scales or arpeggios. Maybe he's not that great after all eh? So I'd suggest that most musicians are learning these things because they aren't great. They do it just like when the would-be rock musician starts learning saying "you can play anything" would just leave him bewildered by an excess of choice and without a well enough developed ear to be able to think "I listened to this Black Sabbath album and I want to make the noises they are" - if he had perfect pitch or a lot of patience he could just listen and then find those noises. But, equally you can show him some root and fifth chords and a scale you call pentatonic or blues and he takes in that information as "this are the notes I can play" - but that's not expanding his mind - that's limiting his mind until he's sufficiently developed as a musician to not need the artificial restriction of a scale. Look at how many rock-based tutorials are "how to break out of scale boxes" - trying to undo the damage so to speak. Of course many a musician may well create a lot of great songs, maybe even have a big rock star career without ever developing as a musician beyond these scale shapes - but it's a big mistake to believe that is what you need to learn to play and most definitely a mistake to believe this is part of being a great musician.
I love how pleased you are that he digs your intro song. To pile on, I will say that I have always loved it as well. Keep up the good work!
