      Exactly you get it. Rock N Roll has been in a sad state for many years and especially during the time period before the darkness came on the scene. I mean bands would be criticized for playing live upbeat rock n roll. Not metal enough or not grunge enough. It got to be to a point of stupidity. The Darkness was one of the few bands willing to embrace that big 80's duel guitar sound and actually have fun playing live rock n roll again. Heaven forbid they sounded like Queen and AC/DC put together they were great and unashamed as you put it a breath of fresh air from all the rap metal and scream metal where you couldn't understand a single damn lyric. The musicianship was there the singing and playing was great. People hated the bands 2nd album One Way Ticket and I loved it.

    Dammit, Justin. Here I am comfortably middle aged and smugly self-satisfied in my musical tastes, and here you are opening my ears to Van Halen, White Snake, fackin A-ha. Point is, you hear and see something that I hadn't, that I had once unthinkingly rejected. Wunderbar, but my question is this: What are the boundaries between "good taste" and bad? High and low. Are labels put on musicians ever useful, or are they all bollocks? Can a song n one era that seems like crap actually be a masterpiece 10 years hence? I was listening to "Children of the Sun" by Billy Thorpe the other night--a childhood lark. But in absorbing some of your ways of listening to music recently I just tried to turn down the volume on my own reflexive way or hearing things. Revelation. Suddenly that track fuckin kicked my aassss. So what's the line between "good" rock 'n roll or "bad"? Why can one song that seems like fookin shaaaaiiittttte in one era seem like genius in another? I'm not sure I can tell anymore, and I'm not sure I care. Sorry for the boringly rambling comment, but I wanted to thank you for that.

    The "mistakes" comment is interesting. I've invested a lot of time into writing music and honestly sometimes hitting the "wrong note" or different part of the fretboard has actually landed me in a better place for where I wanted the song to go. It'll be interesting to see how my songs change if I ever get the chance to play them on a stage! Lol.

I love that you are so knowledgeable about music and now I have total respect for you! I’m going to have to catch you live sometime?your manners are impeccable and you don’t swear breath of fresh air!good luck from your new fan credit where credit is due !like the haircut but it does make you look like t bone!all the best ian&suki the Hawkdog

Suddenly, a guitar based band was famous. It was awesome. Then, i found you here in youtube and what you are doing is very cool. As i think you british people say: "Cheers".

    Speaking of stream of consciousness, there's a story that Ryan Adams, a Y'allternative singer/songwriter based in Nashville, abandoned his usual set list at a gig (as I heard it, it was Dublin's Olympia Theater in the mid to late 00s) and tried to make up songs for the rest of the set!

    On the question of bass players who move about, it would be remiss not to note Steve Harris. Guy runs round the stage like a defensive midfielder in the middle of a cup final. There's a rumor that Bruce Dickinson got an extra-long microphone stand to fend him off from centre stage.

      @@216trixie I actually don’t think it was meant that way. Justin was asked a multipart question. The last part (part 4?) (about 13:53) asked Justin about his favorite performers who move around a lot on stage. He rapid fire listed off a few, then said those were who he could think of at the moment off the top of his head. This Angus Young comment was just pondering/adding to Justin’s list.

    On the subject of uniforms, you could argue that having a band aesthetic is a uniform of sorts. Each spice Girl was unique, each member of the Doors was unique, Lynrd Skynrd, too. But weren’t they all kind of the different flavors of the same ice cream in the end? They were unique but at the same time kind of the same.
    Btw,
    I absolutely adore One Way Ticket. It’s so over the top, full of great riffs and great lyrics.

    • @Kingofold2112
      @Kingofold2112 2 года назад +1

      yeah you could almost swap out "uniform" for "look" I think its important for a band to have a "look" unless it is their "look" to not have a "look." Personally I think being provocative is the most important thing. Maybe even controversial. Blue jeans and long hair used to scare the masses but not so much anymore...

    Been a Darkness fan since the start, even took my mom to see them. Even have a white Les Paul (sheer coincidence). I recognize the difference between 'best album,' as in most iconic or most recognizable vs. 'favorite,' and while Permission to Land will surely win out as the former, Hot Cakes is my latter. The delicious resurgence of that album infused my blood with a hair-blowing giddy that will likely never go away. When I behold the beautiful creation that saved me from an abusive relationship many years ago the song With A Woman often plays in my head.

    One Way Ticket is how I got into The Darkness. Heard it on K-Rock in NYC & a new favorite was born. When the station went talk radio, I was pissed. It was the only decent radio station in the NYC area, & the only that played The Darkness. Needless to say, I had to (& still do) purchase each and every CD. Yes, actual hardcopy. And Hot Leg? Omg, fantastic! Love Trojan Guitar!
    Is It Just Me? is definitely a close 2nd favorite Darkness song, probably because the video was fucking incredible.

    Concerning Kiss's usage of backing tracks: I would assume that all of their shows are synched with a click track that is fed to the drummers in-ear mix. This is why all the videos of Paul's alleged lip-synching can be synched together seamlessly and the tempos match. Why would they do this? All the video, lighting cues, pyro, etc. can be triggered when running the show with a click track. In between songs, the click track is stopped while Paul does his banter and is then restarted when he stops. I agree, it's possible that Gene could be oblivious to any backing track vocals but its highly unlikely.
